[Bug 1722152] [NEW] Bootloader install failed

2017-10-08 Thread Bryan Donlan
Public bug reported:

When installing from USB on a secondary SSD, with the bootloader set to
be installed alongside windows boot manager, GRUB installation failed.

Because I selected install directly from the USB key boot menu, I
haven't been given the opportunity to examine logs to determine if this
is a duplicate before submitting this.

[Bug 945424] Re: package linux-image-3.2.0-17-virtual 3.2.0-17.27 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2012-03-04 Thread Bryan Donlan
Despite what the bot says, apt-get upgrade does not automatically
install kernel 3.2.0-18.28. One must manually install linux-
image-3.2.0-18-virtual. The do-release-upgrade therefore still tries to
install 3.2.0-17 and fails.

2011-06-26 Thread Bryan Donlan
I just tested the patches linked, on ubuntu-kernel natty tip
(Ubuntu-2.6.38-10.44, cefe94dc5d171940edd23081d9d481dc1ed5824b). The two
patches from gregkh's tree do indeed fix the xhci controller, and the
gmane patch at http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.usb.general/48323
(suitably adapted for the version of xhci in the ubuntu tree) fixes
suspend.

[Bug 802331] [NEW] dmraid: Reads only from one half of a raid01 fakeraid setup

2011-06-26 Thread Bryan Donlan
Public bug reported:

I have a RAID01 fakeraid array set up using my Intel motherboard's RAID
BIOS. Array initialization has already been completed. While dmraid
detects this array and configures it properly, reads are issued only to
one half of the RAID-1 pairs in the RAID01 array. dmraid should
configure reads to be routed to both drives in each pair, to improve
read performance.

[Bug 793568] [NEW] [USB-Audio - Sound Blaster X-Fi Go! Pro] Sound mutes on suspend

Public bug reported:

I am using a laptop with an onboard HDA audio chipset (disabled due to
physical jack problems) and an external USB audio interface. While the
external interface works fine normally, every time I suspend, the volume

[Bug 793758] [NEW] acpiphp module should be autoloaded

My laptop (Dell inspiron 1420) requires the acpiphp module to be loaded

[Bug 380427] Re: package libofx4 1:0.9.0-3ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: le sous-processus post-installation script a retourn? une erreur de sortie d'?tat 2

2011-05-13 Thread Bryan Donlan
I'm not particularly fluent in french, but this seems to be a case of
general system corruption - perhaps the shell is corrupted or something?

Since it's been two years, I doubt you're still experiencing the problem
- but if you are, please try running in a terminal:

LC_ALL=C dpkg --configure -a

This will make the output english so I can understand it :)

 Hi Bryan,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu?  ISO CD images are available from
 http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

Hi,

Unfortunately, the bug occurs with low probability (10%?) so I'm not
sure if I'll be able to reproduce it on the livecd... I guess I'll run
through a few dozen sleep cycles with the ISO over the weekend though.

Thanks,

Bryan Donlan

So you're saying you did not fix a bug in one of the mayor GPU drivers
for 2 and a half years, and now give up on it, because there is another,
different driver available for another release, while the bug still
exists? Fsck it. That's really poor. However, there's Debian running on
the box with closed source nvidia for half a year now.

They're fixing the bug by replacing the driver completely. Presumably
the old driver was broken beyond repair.

[Bug 501973] [NEW] rfkill gets stuck in hard-blocked state erroneously, blocking wireless

2009-12-31 Thread Bryan Donlan
Public bug reported:

With my RF kill _off_, I get:
# rfkill list
0: (null): Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
3: phy2: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

But with it on:
# rfkill list
0: (null): Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
3: phy2: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes

As you can see, rfkill always reports one of the kill switches on.

It should be noted that there is not, in fact, a hardware block - by
mounting tmpfs over /sys/devices/virtual/rfkill/rfkill0, I can get
NetworkManager to connect normally. So the state of rfkill0 is just
plain wrong here.

[Bug 349860] Re: package ttf-root-installer 5.18.00-2.3ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade:

2009-12-28 Thread Bryan Donlan
The problem appears to be slow DNS servers for cern.ch:

# wget --continue --tries=1 --dns-timeout=10 --connect-timeout=5
--read-timeout=300 --directory-prefix . -c
ftp://root.cern.ch/root/ttf/ttf_fonts.tar.gz
--2009-12-28 10:54:17-- ftp://root.cern.ch/root/ttf/ttf_fonts.tar.gz
   = `./ttf_fonts.tar.gz'
Resolving root.cern.ch... failed: Connection timed out.
wget: unable to resolve host address `root.cern.ch'

If I change the timeouts to 20 seconds:
# wget --continue --tries=1 --dns-timeout=20 --connect-timeout=20
--read-timeout=300 --directory-prefix . -c
ftp://root.cern.ch/root/ttf/ttf_fonts.tar.gz
--2009-12-28 10:54:37-- ftp://root.cern.ch/root/ttf/ttf_fonts.tar.gz
   = `./ttf_fonts.tar.gz'
Resolving root.cern.ch... 128.142.141.37
Connecting to root.cern.ch|128.142.141.37|:21... connected.
Logging in as anonymous ... Logged in!
== SYST ... done.== PWD ... done.
== TYPE I ... done.  == CWD /root/ttf ... done.
== SIZE ttf_fonts.tar.gz ... 1612860
== PASV ... done.== RETR ttf_fonts.tar.gz ... done.
Length: 1612860 (1.5M)

So the timeouts should be changed, and/or canonical should mirror this file.

[Bug 454344] [NEW] After changing audio profile on bluetooth headphones, the device vanished with no way to get it back

2009-10-17 Thread Bryan Donlan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

When I changed the audio profile in the sound preferences for my
bluetooth headphones, they vanished from the hardware list there. I have
since been unable to reset the profile back so I can use them again.
They appear as a connected bluetooth device, but not as a usable audio
device.

I have tried:
* Re-pairing the headsets, several times
* Rebooting
* Grepping dotfiles for their mac address (nothing found...)

The audio profile settings should make sure such sticky settings are
always available to the user, especially when an error in these settings
can apparently cause the hardware to become unavailable, thus rendering
it impossible to restore the settings to working ones!

[Bug 454344] Re: After changing audio profile on bluetooth headphones, the device vanished with no way to get it back

2009-10-17 Thread Bryan Donlan
I was able to reset the setting by re-pairing using a different host
adapter (I guess HSP/HFP isn't compatible with the one I was using?),
resetting the profile back to A2DP, then re-pairing with the first
adapter again. But there should've been a way to reset the profile
without needing to switch adapters - I'm lucky that worked at all.

[Bug 451951] [NEW] Kernel modesetting test failed

Public bug reported:

The kernel modesetting test under system-administration-system testing
failed; there was no effect whatsoever when it claimed to attempt to
switch to the text console (no flicker, no nothing).

It is possible that this may be a bug in the system testing program
itself; if so, please reassign.

[Bug 450504] [NEW] Keyboard and trackpad occasionally unusable after suspend

2009-10-13 Thread Bryan Donlan
Public bug reported:

On my Dell inspiron 1420, occasionally the keyboard and trackpad are
unusable after suspend; I am thus unable to unlock the machine and must
cut power and reboot. On Jaunty, I could recover from this by binding
the power button to suspend, and re-suspending the machine - possibly
pointing to a race on resume? however on Karmic this no longer works -
the power button press is ignored at the unlock window.

[Bug 450504] Re: Keyboard and trackpad occasionally unusable after suspend

2009-10-13 Thread Bryan Donlan
Here is a full kernel log of the boot in question. As you can see, it
was not the first time the system had been suspended that boot; however
the number of suspensions does not seem to correlate with occurences of
the bug.

[Bug 450946] [NEW] Automatic plugin installation falsely claims that plugin does not provide needed filters

2009-10-13 Thread Bryan Donlan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

When playing back a h264/AAC video file, totem popped up the automatic
plugin installer. After installing gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, it claimed that the packages were installed,
but the requested codecs were not included. However after restarting
totem, the video played back fine.

Totem should not claim the codecs are not included without first
reloading its mime-type database after installing new plugin packages.
Or it should restart (or request that the user restart it) rather than
making the user think the operation failed outright.

[Bug 450947] [NEW] Regression from jaunty - video corruption in text consoles

2009-10-13 Thread Bryan Donlan

[Bug 445422] Re: bluetooth-applet crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_instance_get_private()

2009-10-12 Thread Bryan Donlan
I've put a version of the package with my patch (effectively the same
one I posted to upstream's bugzilla; slightly different from the one in
this thread as it disables the killswitch-disabling logic in main as
well) in my PPA at:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~bdonlan/+archive/test/+packages

It'd be helpful if some people could give it a test - in particular,
make sure your bluetooth RF killswitches still work after this!

[Bug 445422] Re: bluetooth-applet crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_instance_get_private()

2009-10-12 Thread Bryan Donlan
@Tormod: Does your bluetooth device still show up in lsusb when the
killswitch is on? If not, it's probably implemented by just
disconnecting the USB connection to the bluetooth hardware rather than a
killswitch as bluetooth-applet considers them. Unfortunately I don't
have any hardware with any accessible killswitch whatsoever here so I
don't know what the correct behavior is :/

[Bug 445422] Re: bluetooth-applet crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_instance_get_private()

2009-10-12 Thread Bryan Donlan
@Tormod, ok, that means you probably don't have a killswitch as
bluetooth-applet sees them.
Note that this bug only occurs if you have zero killswitches when the applet
starts up, so if your bluetooth adapter is internal, it's a good bet that you
have that kind of pure-hardware killswitch if you experience this bug (and the
killswitch is likely to be off when the applet starts...)

[Bug 445422] Re: bluetooth-applet crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_instance_get_private()

2009-10-11 Thread Bryan Donlan
The bug seems to stem from the fact that bluetooth_killswitch_init in
lib/bluetooth-killswitch.c sets up an IO watch, but
bluetooth_killswitch_finalize doesn't clean it up. As such, when the
event actually does come, event_cb goes and uses a freed object handle
and promptly explodes.

Attached is a patch that solves this problem, but I think there's another, more
fundamental bug here; if the bluetooth dongle isn't plugged in at startup, it
seems to deinitialize killswitch handling permanently. For example, if I start
it up with the dongle in, then unplug the dongle:
** Message: adding killswitch idx 22 state 1
** Message: Reading of RFKILL events failed
** Message: killswitch 22 is 1
** Message: killswitches state 1
** Message: killswitch 22 is 1
** Message: killswitches state 1
** Message: RFKILL event: idx 22 type 2 op 1 soft 0 hard 0

** Message: removing killswitch idx 22
** Message: killswitches state 1

But if I start with it out, then plug it in and remove it:
** Message: Reading of RFKILL events failed
** Message: killswitches state 1

Perhaps the killswitch-unreffing in main.c:990 should be removed as
well? I'm not familiar enough with the code to know if this is the right
approach, though.

I do not see how this is such a big licensing problem - the CDDL and
GPL-2 are incompatible but this just means the verbatim ZFS code will
never be accepted into the *mainline kernel*. Ubuntu has a specific
solution to this - the ubuntu directory in the kernel tree, which
holds stuff like compcache (BTW *please* update this to 0.5.3) and
 wireless drivers and so on.

That has not stopped Ubuntu shipping non-free Proprietary drivers
(either licensed under some other license than GPL) and even binary
 drivers.

It astounds me that nobody has even bothered to make a Linux kernel
module that implements ZFS natively, yet everyone who is that concerned
is probably running fglrx or some binary wireless firmware or putting
something through NDISWrapper... or running WINE..

Hm, indeed - the register_filesystem call isn't marked as being for
GPL modules only. That said, it's still up to someone to actually make
the porting effort, and with btrfs coming along nicely, it's probably
not seen as that big of a deal.
There's always the option to port it yourself, or hire someone to do so :)

[Bug 135874] Re: [needs-packaging] StepMania

2009-04-26 Thread Bryan Donlan
The source code will need a good bit of patching before it can be used,
looks like. There are a number of compiler failures (likely due to newer
versions of G++ being more strict about header includes and the like),
and currently stepmania looks for its data directories in the directory
containing its binary.

The latter needs a real solution before any packaging happens - should
shared data directories be in /usr/share? Then users wouldn't be able to
install songs and themes. There'll need to be a way to merge the system-
wide directories with the per-user ones; and also a place to put the
per-user ones (a dotfile works, but it's a non-obvious place to go
looking for the songs directory). Any ideas on where the per-user
directories ought to go?

The problem is, for the non-advanced user who just wants to play their

not know where those folders are!) A location that would be more

[Bug 340269] [NEW] Incorrect wcwidth() result for characters in the enclosed alphanumerics block

2009-03-09 Thread Bryan Donlan
Public bug reported:

Glibc's wcwidth() returns 1 for characters in the enclosed alphanumerics
block (U+2460 to U+24FF). However, monospace fonts seem to assume these
characters are wide characters. The result is programs which rely on the
width data being inaccurate (eg, urxvt) cannot render characters such as
⑨.

To demonstrate this problem, simply open up urxvt and try to paste in ⑨.
You will see it rendered as a broken character block. You can work
around this by adding another font with a small font size, or you can
use the attached LD_PRELOAD library to see the character rendered
properly once wcwidth() returns the right value of 2.

I'd be happy to roll a patch to fix this if someone can point me in the
right direction - I've been poking around the glibc source and can't
seem to find the unicode attribute tables...

0.8.4 packaging is available in debian's experimental branch; as

[Bug 339408] Re: Please sync from debian experimental: 0.12.4

2009-03-07 Thread Bryan Donlan
Upon further analysis the current ubuntu version has a package name
which does not match its soname (libtorrent11 contains
/usr/lib/libtorrent.so.9.2.0). This means that it would satisfy
rtorrent's libtorrent11 dependency without providing the correct soname.
I will roll a patched version of rtorrent to give a safe upgrade path; I
believe the debian/experimental version of libtorrent will work but
should wait for the patched rtorrent.

Cancel this sync; I will need to roll a patched rtorrent package for
ubuntu to deal with the fact that the current (in ubuntu now)
libtorrent11 should have been named libtorrent9...

[Bug 305873] [NEW] clock applet: Adding or removing locations is not reflected in preferences pane immediately

2008-12-06 Thread Bryan Donlan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

When I attempt to add or remove a location in clock preferences -
locations, the added or removed location is not reflected in the list
until I close and reopen the clock preferences window.

Reproduction 1:
1) Right click on the clock, choose preferences
2) Click add
3) Choose any location, then click OK
4) Note that the locations list has not changed
5) Close preferences
6) Left click on the clock; note that the new location is there
7) Reopen preferences; the new location is now on the list

Reproduction 2:

1) Right click on the clock, choose preferences
2) Click on any listed location, then remove
3) Note that the locations list has not changed
4) Close preferences
5) Left click on the clock; note that the deleted location is no longer present
6) Reopen preferences; the location is now gone from the list

Note that if you get your package into debian it will automatically be
accepted into ubuntu universe - it's probably possible to do just
ubuntu, but it's something to keep in mind, as it'll get a larger

[Bug 292576] Re: I just tried to install the package, but something broke. :(

2008-11-02 Thread Bryan Donlan
Looks like kde4-style-qtcurve-kdeconfig is missing a conflicts on kde4
-style-qtcurve. I'll roll a patch to fix it properly, but in the
meantime, you should be able to finish the install by removing kde4
-style-qtcurve-kdeconfig. (That said, since kde4-style-qtcurve-kdeconfig
is already installed, you shouldn't need kde4-style-qtcurve)

[Bug 292576] Re: I just tried to install the package, but something broke. :(

2008-11-02 Thread Bryan Donlan
Attached is an interdiff from 0.59.3-0ubuntu2 to add the necessary
conflicts line; unless there's a new upstream version or whatever coming
in, it should be applied to jaunty once the builds are working. I also
believe it should be a good candidate for a stable update, as it merely
adds a conflicts line to a pair of packages which cannot be installed
together anyway.

[Bug 292928] [NEW] mplayer blocks on dcop for several seconds at startup

2008-11-02 Thread Bryan Donlan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mplayer

mplayer (2:1.0~rc2-0ubuntu17) executes the following command and blocks on it
at startup:
sh -c dcop kdesktop KScreensaverIface isEnabled 2/dev/null | sed 's/1/true/g'
| grep true 2/dev/null /dev/null

However, if KDE is not in use, dcop spends several seconds polling the
(nonexistent) socket:
uname({sys=Linux, node=rika, ...}) = 0
connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path=/tmp/.ICE-unix/dcop6909-1223596270}, 37)
= -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
close(3)= 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, [CHLD], [], 8) = 0
rt_sigaction(SIGCHLD, NULL, {SIG_DFL}, 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [], NULL, 8) = 0
nanosleep({1, 0}, {1, 0}) = 0
socket(PF_FILE, SOCK_STREAM, 0) = 3
uname({sys=Linux, node=rika, ...}) = 0
connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path=/tmp/.ICE-unix/dcop6909-1223596270}, 37)
= -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
close(3)= 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, [CHLD], [], 8) = 0
rt_sigaction(SIGCHLD, NULL, {SIG_DFL}, 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [], NULL, 8) = 0
[loop]

Because of this, mplayer startup is delayed by several seconds.

mplayer should either not block on dcop (ie, handle it asynchronously),
or at least offer a config option to disable kscreensaver integration.
Alternately, dcop should offer a no-retry option, and mplayer should
make use of said option.

This is a regression from hardy, in which mplayer startup was
essentially instantaneous.

Also note that running dcopserver is a usable workaround for this
problem, but the root cause should be fixed.

[Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP

2008-09-14 Thread Bryan Donlan
Really, the answer is simple. If firefox cannot be modified to remove
the EULA and then distributed legally by Ubuntu, it is simply not free
software. Thus it should be in restricted or multiverse, and subject to
the same reduced support. In particular, the default installation should
not install it.

The fact that the restrictions come from trademark and not copyright law
is irrelevant - the result is that modifications are not legal without
first removing the non-free (ie, trademarked) content. It is thus an
equivalent situation to having a mix of GPL'd code and proprietary code
mixed together, made legal in that exact (unmodified) form by the
blessing of the GPL code's copyright holder. While this may be legal to
redistribute according to some separate license, this doesn't make it
even remotely free software.
