[Bug 192502] Re: bluetooth audio skips, cuts out

2018-05-07 Thread Chris Jones
James Brierley solution seemed worked for me in Ubuntu 18.04. audio.conf
did not exist so I simply created it. I suspect dumping these in
main.conf would also work.

[Bug 1300885] [NEW] ifdown should be quiet when called by network-interface.conf upstart job

[Bug 1215927] [NEW] Impossible to install via many remote KVMs

2013-08-23 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

The default Linux keyboard repeat rate is set about as fast as it can be
(in terms of the timeouts it will respect). This makes it almost, if not
entirely, impossible to successfully and accurately complete a server
(or desktop alternate) install over any kind of network latency (e.g. a
KVM session to a machine on another continent).

At the very least the server install image should include kbdrate, but
ideally the installer image would simply drop the timeout to levels more
reasonable in a world of fixed circumference and optic fibres.

 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 1206746] [NEW] ptrace shows esi mutation across pread64 and pwrite64 syscalls

2013-07-30 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

NB: filing this kernel bug against Canonical because the 3.5.0 kernel
isn't officially suported upstream [1].

== Steps to reproduce ==

 0. Follow these steps on an *x86* installation; *not* x86-64.
 1. Download the first attachment Small test case ... as pwrite64_testcase.c
 2. Download the second attachment ptrace tracer ... as regtrace.c
 3. Compile both files
$ gcc -g -o pwrite64_testcase pwrite64_testcase.c
$ gcc -g -o regtrace regtrace.c
 4. Verify the files were compiled correctly
$ file regtrace
You should see output like
regtrace: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386...
 5. Run the command
$ ./regtrace ./pwrite64_testcase | grep -A1 181:

== Expected behavior ==

Step (5) above should print output that looks something like

181: eax:0xffda ebx:0x3 ecx:0xff9cde0f edx:0x19
[--]esi:0xa edi:0x0 ebp:0xff9cde48 eip:0x80486f5
181: eax:0x19 ebx:0x3 ecx:0xff9cde0f edx:0x19
[--]esi:0xa edi:0x0 ebp:0xff9cde48 eip:0x80486f5

Notice the esi:... values, marked with [--], are both 0xa in both
the entry and exit trace line.

== Actual behavior ==

Step (5) produces output that looks like

181: eax:0xffda ebx:0x4 ecx:0xb60a edx:0x19
[--]esi:0xa edi:0x0 ebp:0xb658 eip:0x80488c5
181: eax:0x19 ebx:0x4 ecx:0xb60a edx:0x19
[--]esi:0x23 edi:0x0 ebp:0xb658 eip:0x80488c5

Notice that the esi:... values are *NOT* the same: in the entry trace
line, esi is 0xa (the correct value). But in the exit trace line, esi
is 0x23 (INCORRECT).

== Brief description ==

The regtrace.c program dumps its tracee's registers at all syscall entry
and exits. Per the kernel ABI, all register values *except* eax (return
value) are preserved across syscall entry/exit. The pwrite64_testcase.c
program uses the pwrite64 and pread64 syscalls in a very basic manner.

The symptom is that the regtrace program seems to show a violation of
the kernel ABI, as described above: the esi value (as reported by
ptrace) changes across syscall entry/exit. This could either be a
ptrace bug, or a bug somewhere else in the kernel, but to userspace the
symptom looks the same.

Three kernel builds were tested. Interestingly, the kernel only appears
in an x86 kernel.

 * x86, 3.5.0-36: *SHOWS* the bug
 * x86-64, 3.5.0-36: does *NOT* show the bug
 * x86-64, 3.9.11: does *NOT* show the bug

If it helps clarify the nature of the bug, here's a patch that was
landed to work around it

[Bug 1206746] Re: ptrace shows esi mutation across pread64 and pwrite64 syscalls

2013-07-30 Thread Chris Jones
I should add one more but on information: the pwrite64_testcase.c
includes three statements for executing the pwrite64 syscall

#if 0
nr = pwrite(fd, content, sizeof(content), 10);
nr = syscall(SYS_pwrite64, fd, content, sizeof(content), 10, 0);
#endif
__asm__ __volatile__(int $0x80
 : =a(nr)
 : 0(SYS_pwrite64), b(fd), c(content),
   d(sizeof(content)), S(10), D(0));

The same result is seen with all three calls. The first two should end
up using the |systenter| entry point in the VDSO. The third uses the
old-fashioned entry point. So the bug manifests across both the
systenter/int entry points.

[Bug 1178115] Re: nomodeset is needed on server environments for ILO to be usable

2013-05-09 Thread Chris Jones
fwiw this is not iLO specific, any hardware which is intercepting text
mode consoles for out of band administration, will be affected.

my anecdotal experience suggests that server people care deeply about
remote console access and end up working around this either by disabling
KMS, or by configuring grub/linux/getty to talk to a serial port. If we
can fix things so the experience out of the box is awesome, that would
be fantastic.

Is it actually possible for the kernel to detect that there is a piece
of hardware intercepting its text mode VGA calls?

[Bug 1065166] Re: Xorg uses 100% CPU for ~7s when maximizing Terminator window

2013-01-30 Thread Chris Jones
I don't think this can be a Terminator bug, we aren't doing anything special
when we are maximised. It might be worth checking your terminator preferences
to see what the background setting is - perhaps it's set to be transparent and
that is placing a high burden on your X server?
Seems kinda unlikely though, given the kind of nvidia card you have.

[Bug 1020902] [NEW] ecryptfs may truncate encrypted passphrase store

2012-07-04 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

The following scenario leads to a zero byte encrypted passphrase store
and therefore likely considerable dataloss:

* Disk runs out of space which causes weird login screen behaviour
* User changes their password with passwd(1) so they can hand the laptop to a
support engineer and go to a meeting
* ecryptfs has somehow truncated the encrypted passphrase store and now it is
impossible to complete ecryptfs-mount-private without the recorded key, which
many users will not have

I would suggest that ecryptfs write out the encrypted passphrase to a
new file and then move it in place, this should separate the act of
writing from the act of replacing, so the first step will fail and at
least the user will have the passphrase encrypted with their old
password. This is sub-optimal, but easier to recover from than a
truncated file!

[Bug 979326] Re: [soudnua]: No Input Level is detected for all my microphones

2012-04-30 Thread Chris Jones
This seems to be similar to what I have found after upgrading to
precise. When I plug in a webcam with micorphone via usb, that works
(but I need the rear microphone jack working as the webcam is only
borrowed to test the point.)

See attached screenshot. The rear microphone jack is detected. There is
a tested working mcirophone attached, but there is no input being
detected. I have Intel i7 2600 motherboard with built in sound card
device. Have 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04 installed and up to date. See below for
lspci listing of audio device (bottom).

Mode of sound hardware is set to Analogue Stereo Duplex in the Output
tab of the sound settings. Was working before upgrade from 11:10.

This suggests that your config file has an invalid cursor_color entry.
I'm adding an error handler to reset it if this occurs.

[Bug 872157] Re: Focus new split window/area with Follow mouse pointer mouse focus setting

2011-10-11 Thread Chris Jones
The focus will depend on where the mouse is - if it's over the area that
will be the new terminal, focus will go to that terminal, so in the
strictest sense the focus is following the mouse. Having said that, I
can see the argument for focussing the new terminal.

[Bug 832603] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in g_simple_async_result_complete()

2011-09-27 Thread Chris Jones
Because of a problem with fglrx I have had to reinstall from scratch. I
found that I could not reinstall from Ubuntu beta 2 or daily builds and
have had to reinstall natty then upgrade. (if it might give any clue to
the current bug the oneric install could not start the screen with or
without fglrx installed) I have therefore just installed all latest
updates/upgrades at 11:22hrs BST 27-9-2011 and

AMD Radeon 6450, Intel 64 bit processor (E6750), iiyama Prolite E2473HDS
monitor (1920x1080). Would also like to be using my second monitor Sony
SDM-X75F/K (1280x1024) but having difficulty.

Thanks, as always

well. Octave 3.4 branch is major update from 3.2 (since Feb 2010) and contains
feature important to us Octave users particularly in terms of the Matlab
compatibility and graphing facilities.

[Bug 837946] [NEW] Lucid cannot boot from filesystems with multiple signatures

2011-08-31 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Having upgraded a Dell PowerEdge from hardy to lucid we found it unable to
boot, instead falling to an initramfs with an error that it couldn't find the
root filesystem.
blkid -p on the boot device claimed ambivalent results due to multiple
filesystem signatures.

Simply removing the (two) incorrect VFAT signatures on the device with
wipefs allowed the system to boot normally.

[Bug 837946] Re: Lucid cannot boot from filesystems with multiple signatures

2011-08-31 Thread Chris Jones
While it is perhaps the case (as is argued in 428318) that blkid cannot
be expected to be omniscient and choose the correct signature, the
reality is that this is a regression in functionality and telling people
to reformat is not really very good.

Perhaps it would therefore be useful for do-release-upgrade to perform a
quick test to see if the mounted filesystems have ambivalent results
with a new blkid and if so either refuse to upgrade until the user has
fixed the situation, or if we have a high degree of trust in the tools,
remove the signatures which don't match the filesystem type which the
partition is actually mounted as.

(fwiw the additional filesystem signatures were two VFAT ones named
'DellUtility' so presumably relate to recovery partitions that were not
entirely erased when we formatted and installed Ubuntu)

[Bug 705780] Re: Focus setting should be set to GNOME default by default

2011-06-02 Thread Chris Jones
The problem here is one of complexity. The simple presence of gconf key
suggesting that a window manager is configured to use sloppy focus doesn't
actually mean that a) the user is using that window manager, b) the user is
even using gconf.
I am not interested in attempting to detect all of the above things, so I think
we have no real choice here but to stick to a safe default, unfortunately!

[Bug 675070] [NEW] Nautilus can't access SMB mount first time

2010-11-13 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I access my BSD file server at home via SMB, it mounts in Nautilus.
The very first time it is mounted it works as it should. But once I
leave for anything above 5 minutes or so, when I click on the already
mounted link I get an error message. When I rid the error message off
screen and try again, it works. But not every time, sometimes it can
take about 2-3 attempts before it finally connects and displays my file
server data.

I have tried this in KDE with Dolphin and have no problems. Also,
Nautilus in Fedora has no problems either. It seems to be limited to
Nautilus on Ubuntu.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 671345] [NEW] search bar should search all sections

2010-11-05 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

I contend that the search box should search available and installed software on
every search performed.
My reasoning is that the location of the search box doesn't immediately
indicate that the search applies only to the section the user is in.

(I am filing this because I just observed a user try to search for
Banshee while in the Installed Software section and get confused/angry
that Banshee wasn't available).

I realise the reality of things is hinted by the breadcrumb bar when the
results pane appears, but I think we could be being more helpful here.
The section the user is in could appear first in the search results,
with other sections appearing shortly afterwards.

As it is, right now we just return a big empty white box and confuse the
user :)

(I considered the option of only searching other sections if the current
one returned no results, but I think this would be unpredictable and
inconsistent from a user perspective).

[Bug 671347] [NEW] notify user when transactions complete

2010-11-05 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

I think it would be useful if the package daemon would notify the user
that package transactions have been completed, at the conceptual level
of the task they asked for - e.g. after installing all the monsterous
dependencies of Java, it would simply notify Eclipse has been
installed with the app's icon.

It could be argued that for short transactions, particularly where the
user still has Software Centre open/focussed, this could be annoying.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10
Package: software-center 3.0.5

[Bug 647475] Re: etckeeper with bazaar stopped working for the update manager on upgrade to maverick

2010-10-22 Thread Chris Jones
Where bzr is aware that it is running as uid=0, it should simply warn
about identity and then use r...@hostname. Breaking package transactions
is an extremely undesirable thing to be doing imo.

Re: [Bug 663920] Re: public IPs unroutable from instances

Hi

It's not fair to assume that the public ip is bound to a local
interface. That's not how ec2 works. It does seem reasonable to expect
to route to that ip thoigh

 public address, which is not such an uncommon requirement.

[Bug 663920] [NEW] public IPs unroutable from instances

2010-10-20 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Obviously the public IPs are not allocated to the instances directly, but are
mapped via NAT on a controller. I don't appear to be able to talk to the public
IP mapped to an instance from the instance itself.
It's a fairly odd thing to be wanting to do, but it works on EC2, so for
compatibility's sake I suggest Eucalyptus modify the NAT rules to make it work.
