[Bug 1463120] Re: Failure to boot if fstab disk mounts fail

2017-01-13 Thread DaneM
I work for a major educational system that utilizes Ubuntu Server
(14.04, 16.04 LTS) instances on the Amazon Web Services cloud for
critical infrastructure. This bug has come up a few times, where an
admin has a typo or other error in /etc/fstab, pertaining to a non-OS
filesystem (like an EFS data volume), and as a result, the system fails
to boot. On a physical machine, this wouldn't be a big deal: press "S"
to skip that mountpoint, and keep booting; or if that doesn't work, boot
from live media and fix fstab. However, a cloud instance doesn't grant
you those options: it hangs forever, and you have no physical keyboard,
USB port, or optical drive with which to workaround the problem.

I normally wouldn't suggest a certain priority on a bug, but this is a
severe liability for anyone running Ubuntu in a cloud computing
environment. Therefore, I must respectfully request that this bug be
elevated to "Major" or "Critical" status.

Thank-you.

I can confirm the presence of this bug, as well as the login, itself not
working ("an error occurred"). I resent my Ubuntu One password, just to
make sure I wasn't typing it wrong, and the error persists.

[Bug 1532097] Re: Upgrade from 14.04 to 15.04 failed due to ubuntu-desktop not being installed

2016-01-10 Thread DaneM
Odd. I originally titled this bug report with the error message I got,
regarding a file having been modified in /etc; but I never edited that
file (hadn't heard of it until the error message). I would think that
the solution in such an instance might be to simply overwrite the file,
unless doing so is likely to cause problems for the user's data or
installed (still-compatible) programs.

I'm sorry to report that I did a clean installation before realizing
that I would need to provide further details about the possible bug. (I
was on a time crunch to get the machine updated.) I hope some of the
submitted info proves useful, somehow; otherwise, don't worry about it.

Thanks for your work. :-)

[Bug 833675] Re: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV in goa_oauth_provider_get_callback_uri()

2013-05-16 Thread DaneM
This bug also affects me on a fresh (like 1 hours ago) install of Ubuntu
13.04 amd64.

I ran Empathy, then attempted to set up a Facebook account, which sent
me to their website, then gave me a success...this url is like your
password message, without actually letting me use the account with
Empathy. I then successfully set up my Gmail account with Empathy.
After this, whenever I go to the Empathy Accounts menu, or attempt to
access Online Accounts through the control center, the Online Accounts
window comes up for about 1 second, then disappears. Sometimes, it
suggests reporting a bug.

Thanks for all your work, and please let me know if you need more
information.

I just got this message while trying to install apps in Linux Mint 13
(AMD64) from the Humble Indie Bundle 7. I can install previous Ubuntu
purchases, such as Monster RPG 2, Super Meat Boy, and SpaceChem,
some of which I purchased from previous HIBs. I also can't use the
humblebundle.com link from my private download page to install these
games through the Ubuntu Software Center.

The specific games I'm trying to install now are:

I'd greatly appreciate anything that can be done about this bug.

I've recently switched (back) to using Linux Mint with Mate. I can

[Bug 479813] Re: Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG stops working after upgrading to kernel 2.6.28-16.55 (generic)

2012-06-08 Thread DaneM
Christopher, I don't know if this last action is premature, since Bryan
Paddock evidently has the same problems with version 12.04. As I no
longer have access to the laptop in question, I cannot confirm whether
there has been a regression since my last post.

Bryan, can you perhaps clarify whether this problem still exists (or
exists again) with all updates? I'm not personally qualified to say
whether the technical details are identical between your case and mine,
but I suspect that someone with more knowledge than I have could do so.

I'm leaving this as invalid unless reason to change the status is
provided.

[Bug 146367] Re: An extra 'executable' bit is seen when POSIX ACL is used by Samba

2011-12-08 Thread DaneM
Sorry to revive an old bug, but I've recently run into this problem.
Using the following in smb.conf, when I create a file as a remote user,
the Owner's permissions are always set to executable on files (rwxrw-
rw-), whereas they should be rw-rw-rw-.

[DnD Public]
path = /mnt/PERSONAL/Dane/RPGs/DnD Public
comment = Players can put stuff in here
writeable = yes
guest ok = yes
guest only = yes
force create mode = 0666
force directory mode = 0777

I've tried it with force user = dane in there (since that's my local
login, which is set-up in samba's database), but keep getting the same
result. Since this is a security problem, depending on the context, and
since there's already a patch released upstream, at the link above, I
was hoping this could get fixed in a security release sometime soon.
(The patch was posted to that page in 2006--if this is, indeed, the same
bug.)

I might end up patching and compiling Samba, myself, but I'd really
rather not dump a pile of make install into my filesystem tree (and
that wouldn't fix the bug in the repository, besides).

Thanks for reading.

[Bug 267913] Re: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj

2011-09-02 Thread DaneM
I should also note that I'm using Nvidia drivers 180.13 with a GeForce
9800 GTX, or GTX 560 Ti (when the latter is working--in process of RMA).
Some previous posters have mentioned a possible link to the video card
and its drivers.

I'm currently doing a badblocks on my Linux drive, but in Disk Utility,
there's something I thought I should mention, which I don't entirely
understand:

5. Reallocation Sector Count: Good - Normalized: 200; Worst: 200;
Threshold: 140; Value: 0 sectors.

Does this mean that no sectors currently in use are bad, but 200 have
been reallocated; or that the 200 number is some kind of setting for
when to worry, and there have been no such incidents? I don't know
whether this could relate to this bug, but if it does, it would be good
to know what I'm looking at.

Thanks, all, for your interest in this bug.

is still appearing in my 'dmesg | grep hda-intel' output, as of this
moment. I'm not experiencing any further problems with massive IO wait,
regarding my hard drives, but the system is still a bit sluggish,
compared to my Windows 7 installation on the same PC (but on a different
drive). I intend to run another badblocks test on my Linux system drive
(500GB SATA) to make sure that it's not having problems, but last I
checked, it was fine.

[Bug 267913] Re: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj

2011-06-04 Thread DaneM
I've just determined that my Windows 7 hard drive (750GB, NTFS,
/dev/sdb) was faulty. It had around 100 bad sectors reported in the
SMART logs, according to the Disk Utility (System Administration
Disk Utility [in Natty]), and I discovered that the huge amount of I/O
wait occurred only when I was accessing this drive, especially for a
long data transfer (copy/move, etc.). Notably, after the first few
hundred MB at around 45MB/s, it slowed abruptly to a crawl of about
5MB/s via 3GB/s SATA. It seemed to make little difference whether I had
it mounted read-only (which is faster for NTFS on Linux), or r/w, and
was equally slow in Windows 7 and in Linux (Ubuntu Natty).

I've since replaced the drive with a new 1TB SATA HD after testing it
for bad sectors (using 'sudo badblocks -svb 4096 /dev/sdx'), and have
noticed a dramatic speed increase. I've not yet checked whether the
dmesg logs report this same error message as before, but I'll check when
I get around to it.

So, here's my request for information from those experiencing this bug:

-Please ensure that SMART monitoring is enabled for all your drives, in
BIOS.

-Open System Administration Disk Utility. Click on each of your
drives, in turn, and click on the button for its SMART status. Please
copy and paste any error entries you see, as well as anything that
stands out to you.

-Please run the following command on each of your hard drives. You can
do this on multiple drives at once, although I recommend not running
many more instances than you have CPU cores. It's OK (and safe) to run
this on mounted drives, even while data is being written to them. 'sudo
badblocks -svb 4096 /dev/sdx' (Replace sdx with the device name for
the hard drive you intend to test. Use only one drive per command, and
DO NOT include the partition number--i.e. type /dev/sda, and NOT
/dev/sda1.) Post all output from these commands to this thread. If
any bad sectors at all are found--which will be noted by their block
number--then your drive is bad, and should be replaced. This can
usually be done under warranty, via the manufacturer's (Seagate, Western
Digital, etc.--not Best Buy or similar). Badblocks will take a VERY
long time to run, especially on a broken drive, so please be patient and
continue until the end, or until you find a bad sector.

-Finally, run this command to get some verification and more information
from SMART: 'sudo smartctl --log error /dev/sdx'. Replace sdx with your
drive's /dev/ entry.

Please post all output from the above. I'm not a developer, but I have
a whole lot of experience in dealing with the practical application of
hardware testing and business-level computer repair. If my hunch is
correct, this will allow you do solve your problems related to this bug
once and for all! I'm honestly not sure how the sound driver relates to
the performance problems or the hard drive failure I had, but given the
excessive I/O wait that slowed down all 4 of my 2.66GHz CPU cores, it
wouldn't surprise me if it's causing timeouts or other problems that the
sound driver is sensitive to.

Good luck, and I look forward to reading your responses!

[Bug 267913] Re: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj

2011-06-04 Thread DaneM
Notable correction: I should have written 3Gbit/s SATA, not 3GB/s. This
amounts to a maximum transfer rate of around 45MB/s.

Correction to the information request above: please run badblocks BEFORE
any of the other steps, including looking in Disk Utility or running
smarctl. (You may have to install smartmontools [spelling?] to have
that command available when the time comes.) If you run badblocks
first, it will ensure that all sector replacements made from reserved
blocks to compensate for read errors during the badblocks test (which
reads every block on the drive) will get logged, and thereby provide a
more accurate picture of whether bad sectors exist, but have been
replaced and hidden/disabled by SMART. This is especially relevant if
SMART wasn't already enabled in BIOS, as it will need an opportunity to
start gathering data for the log that you will be checking later via
Disk Utility and smartctl.

2011-04-26 Thread DaneM
I'm getting this same message on 11.04 64-bit Desktop. My SATA hard
drives are performing slowly and making the whole system slow down much
more than they should when I do any hard-drive-intensive task, like
copying large files. Could this be related to the error message? RJ
Ryan mentioned that hda-intel can share an interrupt with sata_nv. I'm
not using Nvidia SATA on this PC, but could hda-intel be having a
conflict with my Intel SATA? lspci output is attached, and the error
text below.

[Bug 195630] Re: Can't change permissions on a folder with nautilus.

2010-11-15 Thread DaneM
Thanks for posting, alexsimps.

Indeed, I have found the umask=022 option to be very useful on NTFS
filesystems in the past. Unfortunately, it's with my '/' partition,
which is ext4 that I'm noticing the problem. I haven't been able to
change any permissions on my NTFS partition using Nautilus, either, but
the real problem is with not being able to change user-owned files on my
'/' partition (partitularly in /home/dane/blahblahblah). I don't really
need to mess with NTFS permissions in Linux very often, so that's not
such a big problem.

I see that this bug was first reported in 2008. Depending on how many
people are affected, does anybody think it should be marked as high
priority? (Not trying to be impatient, but I do think this is quite a
problem for the systems/users affected.)

Thanks.

[Bug 195630] Re: Can't change permissions on a folder with nautilus.

2010-11-12 Thread DaneM
I just upgraded from 9.10 (amd64) to 10.04, and then immediately from
10.04 to 10.10. I have this same problem:

When I go to

Places Home Folder right-click on Public Permissions tab

and try to change any of the File Access drop-downs, they all
immediately revert to ---. I have tried using 'chmod dane:dane
/home/dane/Public -R' and 'chown a+rwx /home/dane/Public -R' with no
effect. I have also tried running nautilus with 'sudo nautilus
/home/dane', and have not been able to change the file permissions. The
Allow executing file as program box is highlighted (solid orange
color), but cannot be checked or un-checked. I will try to attach a
screenshot of this.

As a result of this, I think, I am unable to use any nautilus-share
functionality that requires a change in permissions, such as Allow
others to create and delete files in this folder and Guest access (for
people without a user account). Whenever I try to use such an option,
nautilus entirely crashes (desktop icons flicker and then come back, and
all folder windows close). I have tried purging (sudo aptitude purge
...) and re-installing samba, samba-common, samba-common-bin, nautilus-
share, nautilus-gksu, nautilus-open-terminal, nautilus-sendto, and
nautilus-sendto-empathy; as well as purging, killing nautilus (killall
nautilus), starting nautilus, and trying to change permissions without
reinstalling those packages. None of this has worked.

I have also tried reinstalling (sudo aptitude reinstall ...) nautilus,
nautilus-data, nautilus-actions, and nautilus-scripts-manager (then
killing and restarting nautilus), but none of this has worked, either.

I have checked my fstab configuration, and my / partition (on which
/home/dane resides) does not have any unusual mount options. I'll
attach this as well. I would REALLY like to get this functionality back
(which I had in 9.10). Any suggestions? Need any more information?

Thanks for your interest in this bug.

[Bug 285063] Re: dmraid mirror in 8.04.1 shows up as three entries in Removable Media - should only show as one

2010-11-12 Thread DaneM
Update: I have just upgraded from 9.10 (amd64) to 10.04, and immediately
thereafter, to 10.10. I have reconfigured my drives so that the mirror
is no longer in any kind of array (dm, or otherwise), but so that there
are now 2 separate partitions (one on each drive), labeled PERSONAL
and PERSONAL2, respectively. I have removed mdadm and dmraid from my
system using 'aptitude remove ...', and the odd drive entry still
appears in the Places menu.  PERSONAL2 does not show up as 2 drives;
there is only one Places entry for it. I have attached a screenshot
for illustration. The erroneous entry is positioned to the left of the
mouse cursor, and looks like a smooth hard drive.

Here is my current /etc/fstab file:

[code]
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# file system mount point type options dump pass
proc/proc procdefaults0 0
# / was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=6730efad-369b-40ff-ac3d-85295772bd13 /   ext4
errors=remount-ro 0   1
# swap was on /dev/sda5 during installation
UUID=a8e4b372-85bf-452f-b51b-c7a53f2c9e23 noneswapsw
  0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0
/dev/fd0/media/floppy0 autorw,user,noauto,exec,sync,utf8 0 0
UUID=00e41414-2b88-47cd-9916-698606d5b2d1   /media/PERSONAL ext3
rw,user,defaults0 2
[/code]

It may be worth noting that in /etc/fstab there is an entry for
/media/PERSONAL, but not for /media/PERSONAL2. PERSONAL2 is my rdiff-
backup mirror drive (not a mirror in the RAID sense), and has the same
formatting, but a different UUID, and slightly different directory
structure.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks for looking into this bug!

[Bug 285063] Re: dmraid mirror in 8.04.1 shows up as three entries in Removable Media - should only show as one

2010-11-12 Thread DaneM
Update (again):

I have just tried taking the entry for /media/PERSONAL out of my
/etc/fstab (by commenting it out with a '#'), and the erroneous drive
entry has disappeared! It would seem that this is a problem with
whatever software provides entries for the Places menu not cross-
checking its own generated data (however it does that--I'm not a
developer...) with /etc/fstab entries.

This would seem to indicate that (unless there's some way that I don't
know of), one cannot statically mount a non-system partition (like /
or swap) without this bug cropping up. Do any of you know a work-around
for this? Is it possible (feasible) to fix this bug without too much
trouble?

Thanks again for your interest in resolving this!

[Bug 601709] Re: Laptop goes to sleep right after plugging/unplugging power cord

2010-10-21 Thread DaneM
Thanks for the continued interest in this bug. The computer that I'm
writing about is my wife's school laptop; as such, I can't reload a new
operating system on it during the semester (which ends in late
December). Do you think it would be sufficient/helpful for me to test
it using a live CD or USB drive? It took some tweaking to get Ubuntu to
load on this laptop (after Karmic), including some kernel/boot options
to make the video not lock up on boot (black screen). I'm pretty sure I
can get it to boot and run a test, but I'd first like to know if this
method of testing would be helpful. Thanks!

[Bug 601709] [NEW] Laptop goes to sleep right after plugging/unplugging power cord

2010-07-04 Thread DaneM
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 700m laptop. Whenever I plug in the power
cord, and whenever I unplug the power cord, the computer immediately
goes to sleep. (I'm pretty sure it's sleep, and not hibernate.) I
tried debugging the problem by monitoring the output of the following
commands, but nothing appeared to change during the plug/unplug event.

upower --monitor=detail upower.log

dbus-monitor --session
type='signal',interface='org.freedesktop.PowerManagement'  dbus-
monitor.log

These commands were recommended for debugging gnome-power-manager on the
g-p-m web site.

Here is the output of those commands:

upower:
Monitoring activity from the power daemon. Press Ctrl+C to cancel.
[14:41:20.290] daemon changed:
[14:41:29.566] daemon changed:
[14:41:52.508] daemon changed:

signal sender=org.freedesktop.DBus - dest=:1.57 serial=2
path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameAcquired
   string :1.57

It may also be worth noting that in order to get this version of Ubuntu
(10.04) to work at all on this laptop, it was necessary to create the
file, /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf, and insert the following text:

options i915 modeset=1

Without that workaround, the laptop boots up to a blank, unresponsive
screen. Ubuntu 8.04 had none of the above problems.

Thanks for looking at this bug! You folks are great!

Re: [Bug 479813] Re: Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG stops working after upgrading to kernel 2.6.28-16.55 (generic)

2010-04-23 Thread DaneM
Thanks for taking the time to deal with this bug.

As soon as my wife's laptop is available to me for testing, I'll let
you know if this is still an issue. (This will probably be at the end
of the spring semester, or in other words, at the beginning of summer,
as she is in grad. school.)

Thanks.

 Hi DaneM,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu?  ISO CD images are available from
 http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal).  It will automatically gather and
attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux 479813

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great.  It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
 Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .  Once you've tested
the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag.  This
can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at
the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing'

 Thanks in advance.

[Bug 28706] Re: need way to specify the lockd port

2009-09-16 Thread DaneM
I found this while searching the mountd man pages:

-P portnum or --port portnum
Makes mountd listen on port portnum instead of some random port.
By default, mountd will listen on the mount/udp port specified
in /etc/services, or, if that is undefined, on some arbitrary
   port number below 1024.

(note the CAPITAL P)

I looked in /etc/services (on jaunty) and saw this:

sunrpc 111/tcp portmapper # RPC 4.0 portmapper
sunrpc 111/udp portmapper
...
nfs 2049/tcp# Network File System
nfs 2049/udp# Network File System

Do you think it would wok if you were to open those ports in the
firewall (assuming you haven't already)? I think that once the
connection is established, the random port number becomes an
established/related connection. I could be wrong. It's been a long
time since I've messed with all this.

[Bug 329644] Re: Alt-SysReq-K has no effect, or unintended effect (depending on system it is used on)

2009-03-29 Thread DaneM
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 303601 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303601

Additional note:

I work at a local computer store, and I've remembered to try Alt+Sysrq+k
on about 4-5 machines that are booted onto the Hardy live CD at work.
(We use that disk for some of our work.) On all of the various machines
that I tested (different ages, makes, and models), that key combination
works as expected in the TTYs, but not in X. This includes trying
Alt+Sysrq+k in both the GDM login screen (after logging out), and in the
Gnome session.

I don't know if the duplicate status is correct or not...

Confirmed. I am currently booted into the Jaunty Alpha 4 live CD.
ctrl+sysrq+k and ctrl+sysrq+reisub have no effect in Gnome. I also

Thanks for looking into this.

[Bug 303601] Re: REISUB is broken

2009-02-21 Thread DaneM
Hello. I made this post on a duplicate bug; I thought it might be
useful to post it to this one as well.

I have only tried it on my home Desktop computer, a Core 2 Duo machine
with an nVidia 9600GT (by Asus) graphics card, using the proprietary
nVidia driver; a logitech Cordless Desktop keyboard and (optical) mouse
(model Y-RAJ56A, with sysrq on the prtscr key); running Ubuntu 8.10 with
all updates (but no backports).

I have also tried using the right alt key as altgr instead of the
prtscr/sysrq key, as suggested at some sites (which I don't remember
what the addresses were or how I got there...). Additionally, I have
tried a number of other key combinations, such as
leftalt+shift+prtscr/sysrq+k, to no avail.

I should note, however, that my TTYs are all functional (F1-F6), and
respond as expected to alt+sysrq+R/E/I/S/U/B and alt+sysrq+K. It's only
in the Gnome GUI that there is no affect, other than asking the user
whether to save a screenshot. :-p

I have also tried setting different keyboard models (us105, Logitech
Cordless Desktop [and alternate], and Logitech Cordless Desktop
Optical), different combinations of alt/win key behavior and compose
key position (in systempreferenceskeyboard), mapping print
screen/screen shot to different key combinations (in
systempreferenceskeyboard shortcuts), and lots of various button
mashing. :-)

Please let me/us (Michael et al) know if there's any further information
that may be of assistance in solving this problem. With
ctrl+alt+backspace disappearing in the next release, I think it's going
to be important to get this resolved as soon as is reasonably possible.
(Please note that I don't mean to put undue pressure on anybody by
saying this.)

Thanks, Devs, for all your work; you make Ubuntu great!

[Bug 31846] Re: Install CD boots, but only mounts from the first CD drive

2009-02-21 Thread DaneM
I will take another look at this. I recall that when I went to install
8.10 (64-bit) on this system (after a motherboard upgrade, but the drive
configuration is constant), I could not install at all from a CD. I
don't recall the details of the problem (I'll look into it again), but I
ended up having to make a live USB drive to install from instead. I'll
keep you posted on this issue, and report a different bug if it appears
to be a different problem.

[Bug 329644] Re: Alt-SysReq-K has no effect, or unintended effect (depending on system it is used on)

2009-02-15 Thread DaneM
Michael,

Thanks for reporting this bug, as it affects me as well.

[Bug 329644] Re: Alt-SysReq-K has no effect, or unintended effect (depending on system it is used on)

2009-02-15 Thread DaneM
jhansonxi,

Thanks for the post.

I have tried pressing alt+sysreq+reisub, which should shut the system
down, but it does nothing while I'm in X/Gnome. If this is a BIOS
issue, is there something I can do to fix it? Please let me know if you
have any ideas.

Thanks.

[Bug 285063] [NEW] dmraid mirror in 8.04.1 shows up as three entries in Removable Media - should only show as one

2008-10-17 Thread DaneM
Public bug reported:

I have two 500GB hard drives in a software mirror array using nVidia's
RAID controller build-into my P7N-SLI Platinum motherboard.

/dev/mapper contains the following:

[code]
crw-rw 1 root root 10, 60 2008-10-17 02:05 control
brw-rw 1 root disk 254, 0 2008-10-17 02:05 nvidia_cfffhefc
brw-rw 1 root disk 254, 1 2008-10-17 02:05 nvidia_cfffhefc1
[/code]

The RAID 1 device is comprised of two drives:

[code]
brw-rw 1 root disk 8, 16 2008-10-17 02:04 /dev/sdb
brw-rw 1 root disk 8, 17 2008-10-17 02:04 /dev/sdb1
brw-rw 1 root disk 8, 32 2008-10-17 02:04 /dev/sdc
brw-rw 1 root disk 8, 33 2008-10-17 02:04 /dev/sdc1
[/code]

Specifically, it's using /dev/sdb1 as the primary drive, and /dev/sdc1
as the secondary drive.

I am using a custom kernel due to a bug that I previously reported
having to do with slow hard drive access. It's version is '2.6.26.5'.

[Bug 33620] Re: Floppy icon on desktop will not open

2008-05-14 Thread DaneM
It seems in Hardy that it's not possible to drag the icon from Computer
to the Destkop. It gives me this error (in details of the error
window): Can't open mountable file.

Incidentally, when I went to mount a floppy, the icon in Computer
changed to a generic removable drive icon, and the name changed to DP
(which is the label of the disk), then the icon changed back to the
floppy icon, as one might expect. Oddly enough, though, the icon and
the name stayed as the generic icon, and the label stayed DP when the
volume was unmounted through the GUI (right-click). This may or may not
be a related bug...

Anyway, let me know if you need any more input.

[Bug 220349] [NEW] Hardy - nvidia mcp51 ata controller: slow access to SATA and PATA drives

2008-04-21 Thread DaneM
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source

I have a MSI P7N-SLI Platinum motherboard. It has an nVidia MCP51 IDE
controller, according to `lspci`. This controller, according to google
(and the solution I found) is actually 2 controllers: nVidia 430 (MCP)
and JMicron JMB363. See this for more details:
http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/msi_p7n_platinum/index.shtml

Symptoms:
-extremely slow optical disk burning
-it takes forever to copy, delete, or create large files
-tracker is REALLY slow, to the point of being practically useless.

I am using Hardy Heron Beta, fully updated, as of April 21, 2008, AMD64
edition, on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I have several drives
attached directly to the 2 PATA controllers on the motherboard:

-primary master: 250GB HD
-primary slave: 18X DVDRW drive
-sec. master: removable HD bay (various older HDs)
-sec. slave: 16X DVDRW drive

I have 1 SATA drive connected to the motherboard at SATA channel 2: a
320GB drive.

I also have installed a Promise Ultra133 TX2 PATA controller card with 2
PATA channels. Only channel 1 has connected drives:

-master: 40GB hard drive
-slave: 80GB hard drive

The larger drives (250 PATA and 320 SATA) are pretty new; the rest are
not, but all drives pass `badblocks -c 4096 -svnb 4096 /dev/xxx` with no
errors.

Here's the workaround I manged to find:

-compile my own kernel based on `apt-get source linux-source-2.6.24`,
using the old debian method from the WIKI. Attached are the old (NOT
working) config from /boot/, and the new (working) config that I made
using `make menuconfig` in the kernel source directory. Note that the
sound drivers were, for some reason not set up properly in the original
.config (as far as I could tell), but oddly enough, worked out-of-the-
box.

-blacklist the module, ata_generic in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.
(Added blacklist ata_generic to the last line.)

Please let me know if you need some more info, and I'll do my best to
give it to you.

Thanks for all your work!

[Bug 98651] Re: Fiesty: updates on 3-29-07 royally messed up fstab

2007-08-23 Thread DaneM
Thanks for your attention to this bug.

It's been a while, so I don't have any details to give you about the
boot-up at that time, but I do recall that it did boot properly. The
main problem (as far as I've figured it out) is that my Promise
Ultra133TX2 PCI ATA133 card and my nVidia CK804 rev. f3 SATA controller
keep getting their attached hard drives mixed-up. Here's what I mean:

/dev/sdb1 38G 28G 9.4G 76% /media/sdc1

As you can see, /dev/sda1, according to blkid, is an 80GB drive labeled
BACKUP, /dev/sdb1 is my 40GB Windows XP installation on NTFS (which,
incidentally does not have a UUID, as NTFS usually doesn't), and /dev/sdc1 is a
300GB drive labeled PERSONAL. In the blkid information in my April 4th, 2007
post, the aforementioned drives are as follows:

/dev/sdc1: LABEL=PERSONAL UUID=88813472-f156-4ee6-b8e9-41540ff07486
TYPE=ext2
/dev/sdb1: TYPE=ntfs
/dev/sda1: LABEL=PERSONAL UUID=88813472-f156-4ee6-b8e9-41540ff07486
TYPE=ext2
/dev/sdb5: LABEL=BACKUP UUID=438E-1221 TYPE=vfat

To my recollection, I have not changed any drive configurations since
then, although I have switched to a 64-bit version of Ubuntu 7.04 on
/dev/hdc1 (via a reinstall). My hardware (cables, jumpers, etc.) has
not changed at all. You may also note that the UUIDs of my various
partitions (except for hdc) have not changed, as I have not since
reformatted or moved them.

As for the contradictory mount points, I have configured them to how
they (as far as I can tell) should be, which is how they show up in my
fully-updated Gentoo installation (as of a week or so ago), which I
installed about 1.5 years ago. If I am not mistaken, sda should be my
first SCSI/SATA device, which is on my onboard nVidia SATA controller.
sdb and sdc should be my first and second drives on my PCI IDE (PATA)
card, respectively.

Thanks again, and let me know if you need any more information.

OK. I've installed Ubuntu 7.04 onto my laptop, and followed the above
reproduction instructions. The bug is still there. It's not as much of
an issue, since the floppy icon is now created on the desktop when media
is inserted, but still, I find it annoying that the custom-made icon
doesn't work. It simply says, unable to mount volume when double-
clicked, with or without the media already mounted.

Thanks.

[Bug 33620] Re: Floppy icon on desktop will not open

I haven't yet tried Edgy or Feisty on my laptop, where this is a
problem. I intend to install Feisty when it's released, and will let
you know the results then. Thanks.

[Bug 98651] Re: Fiesty: updates on 3-29-07 royally messed up fstab

2007-04-02 Thread DaneM
Yet one more thing:

I figured out how to get UUIDs, and I edited my fstab accordingly. Now,
upon boot, it seems that the kernel (or whatever) keeps mixing up my
devices, even duplicating one of them where another should be.

I hope that helps.

Also, Susan, thanks for your bug report. Please make a separate report
for it instead of clumping it in with this report; it'll be more likely
to be seen that way.

[Bug 98651] Fiesty: updates on 3-29-07 royally messed up fstab

2007-03-29 Thread DaneM
Public bug reported:

I have a lot of hard drives, including an ATA133 add-in card with 2 HDs,
onboard ATA133 with 2 HDs, and one SATA HD. Upon updating all my
packages to current (as of 3-29-07 at 9am Pacific), my fstab got really
messed-up. Below is my fixed fstab, with the Ubuntu-generated lines
commented out, and the correct lines beneath them. One should note that
while everything did mount under the Ubuntu-generated configuration, all
the drive letters for my SATA and ATA133 add-in card (sda1, etc) were
wrong (ie the UUIDs appeared to be wrong).

[Bug 33620] Re: Floppy icon on desktop will not open

2006-12-22 Thread DaneM
I am using Dapper Drake. I still have this problem, though it has
changed somewhat since I made this report. Now when I insert a floppy
into the USB drive, it will automount and open it, which is very nice.
However, when I go to open it again (having first closed the window that
came up showing the files) using the icon I created on the desktop (not
the one that it auto-created), it gives me this error:

Unable to mount the selected floppy drive.
error: /dev/sda is already mounted to /media/floppy
error: could not execute pmount

If I click on the auto-created icon it works fine, but if I unmount
(eject) the volume and then click on the icon that I made, it will
mount it again, creating another icon, and then not open a window with
the files on the drive. Repeated clicking on the homemade icon produces
the error above. Clicking on the auto-created icon opens up a window
showing the files.

Since an icon is now created on the desktop when a floppy is inserted,
this is not such a problem for me; it's really just an annoyance that I
can't have a floppy icon always on the desktop for mounting/unmounting
the volume at will instead of having to remove/insert the disk.

Thanks for taking notice of this bug report! I hope it's an easy one to
fix. :-)

[Bug 52164] Dapper: CDROM ejects itself while playing an audio CD; Sound Juicer freezes

2006-07-06 Thread DaneM
Public bug reported:

When I insert and play an audio CD in Dapper (installed in oem mode from
the Alternative CD), within about 5 minutes the drive will spontaneously
eject, stopping the playback (obviously) and freezing Sound-Juicer.
This also happens in RhythmBox, except that it doesn't freeze; it just
ejects for no apparent reason.

To reproduce:

1) Insert a CD (I tried Jimi Hendrix Blues and Miles Davis Blue Miles)
2) Click play in Sound Juicer
