Re: [Bug 1902224] Re: custom-time-format set in dconf-editor ignored

2021-08-02 Thread Daniel Newman
Yes.

Same problem with Ubuntu 21.04 and ayatana-indicator-datetime
0.8.1-2ubuntu1

I've tried a string equivalent to the ISO 8601 format, using:
'%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M'

dconf-editor shows this as the current value, but there is no resulting
change in the display.

[Bug 1913499] [NEW] Bluetooth input doesn't work w/ Bose QC35 ii

2021-01-27 Thread Daniel Newman
Public bug reported:

When connecting the Bose QC35 ii, the bluetooth audio works just fine
initially, but the microphone does not. When I go to the sound settings
and change the mic input to use the QC35 ii bluetooth input, the audio
changes from stereo to mono and sounds terrible and cannot understand
anything. Also the mic picks up some input, but the result output sounds
about the same, completely un-understandable, a stuttering digitized
version of the input.

3. I expected the microphone input and headset output to both work
simultaneously via bluetooth.
4. Only the headset output worked well, when enabling microphone both sounded
terrible (unusable).

When a custom string is entered using dconf-editor, it is ignored and
the default faormat is displayed.

[Bug 1008022] Re: Gnome-panel disappears when switching desktop

2012-06-07 Thread Daniel Newman
Exactly as described, mouse input to workspace switcher on panel fails
using gnome-classic and compiz but works using gnome-classic and
metacity. As part of failure the panel disappears, but will return if
the Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut is used to open a terminal. The returned panel
fails the same way if any mouse input to the workspace switcher is
attempted. Ctrl+Alt+arrow workspace switching works under all
conditions, but windows don't show up correctly in the workspace
switcher panel applet.

Re: [Bug 654791] Re: Kernel oops - Winfast USB DTV Dongle

2011-01-03 Thread Daniel Newman
No idea. As a temporary fix, try rebuilding the kernel as shown at

https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/101784/

This works for me, and does not seem to have any side effects, but you
need to rebuild every time you update the kernel.

Using the current lucid release, with kernel 2.6.32-16-generic and
gpsbabel 1.3.6-3, the xserial gps connection now appears to function
normally. Unless others continue to have problems, this bug should now

 Hi Daniel,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a

gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux 407857

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-

Re: [Bug 538377] Re: HD3450 HDMI output intermittently turns off

2010-03-19 Thread Daniel Newman
No fglrx remnants showed up in the checks, but I followed the
reinstallation instructions anyway. I've also removed the xorg.conf and
rebooted, with a log as attached. The boot and xserver startup were
normal, but the problem remains, with HDMI output turning off after some
time.

Using the stock lucid kernel, the current version
linux-image-2.6.32-16-generic (2.6.32-16.25), the same HDMI problem
occurs. With both kernels, remote login and using xrandr to change the
mode restores the HDMI output.

However, I'm more sure now that having mplayer running continuously but
paused prevents the HDMI output turning off (at least, it has never
happened so far). Maybe this is some power management issue, where
having mplayer running prevents the HDMI output getting into some low
power state from which it cannot return.

On 19/03/10 20:28, Bryce Harrington wrote:
Hi Daniel, okay I think we should forward this upstream to look at,
however there's a couple things I'd just like to doublecheck first.

I see you posted an xorg.conf. Pretty much it looks totally okay, but I
think everything that is listed there are now defaults, and in fact
should set up properly with no xorg.conf. Could you please try moving
aside your xorg.conf and boot with no xorg.conf at all, and see if the
 issue reproduces?

Second, you mentioned you'd had fglrx installed previously. Sometimes,
depending on how it is uninstalled, it can leave some bits on the disk
which then screw up the open source driver's 3D. I don't see any
evidence this is happening here, but just in case please follow the
directions at the following link to purge any remaining fglrx

Finally, I notice you're running the 2.6.33 kernel. Does the same thing
happen when using the stock lucid kernel?

3) The HD3450 DVI-HDMI output is connected by HDMI cable to an ASUS

4) The display generally starts fine, but intermittently, after apparently
random times and with random programs running, the display turns off and the
monitor reports no HDMI output. Logging in from another machine, everything
appears to be normal and xrandr reports the same as above. However, there is
no HDMI output to the monitor. This can be fixed by xrandr, using first:

xrandr -d :0 --output DVI-0 --mode 1024x768

which makes the display visible again, in the lower resolution, then

xrandr -d :0 --output DVI-0 --mode 1920x1200

which restores the original display. Things then function normally
until the next random HDMI output failure.

Re: [Bug 538377] Re: HD3450 HDMI output intermittently turns off

2010-03-13 Thread Daniel Newman
This Xorg.0.log is from an apparently-normal boot, with the bug as
described above occurring a couple of hours after the boot. The display
was re-enabled using xrandr as described above, then ran normally until
the bug occurred again about an hour later. Re-enabled again, and so
far has run more than 12 hours without the bug re-occurring.

Although in the original bug report I said it was independent of
programs being run, it now seems to me that perhaps it occurs less often
while mplayer is running, but paused. However, this could be coincidence.

Re: [Bug 327886] Re: modprobe can't load usbhid

2010-03-12 Thread Daniel Newman
Unfortunately I've moved on from that hardware and am unable to report
on its current status. Since no-one else seems to have been affected by
it, maybe the bug could now be closed.

 Hi Daniel,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
 available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
 Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux 327886

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
 results.

 Thanks in advance.

[Bug 420471] Re: HDMI output no longer visible in gnome-volume-control

2010-02-20 Thread Daniel Newman
No. The Output tab in gnome-volume-control now shows three devices:

Internal Audio Analog Stereo
RV620 Audio device [Radeon HD 34xx Series] Digital Stereo (HDMI)
Simultaneous output to RV620 Audio device [Radeon HD 34xx Series] Digital
Stereo (HDMI), Internal Audio Analog Stereo

and any of them can be selected.

There is a problem at present with the actual output through HDMI, but
that (I think) is due to the current incompatibilities between the
kernel, fglrx and xorg and is not related to this bug.

As far as I am concerned, this bug can now be closed.

[Bug 503372] Re: Evince doesn't retain settings in Lucid

2010-02-16 Thread Daniel Newman
Same problem here with lucid. On first opening any pdf, evince shows a
side pane with thumbnails and occupies a very small area of the screen.
If I close the side pane, then resize evince to something readable on my
monitor, then close evince, subsequent opening of ***the same*** pdf
does not open the side pane and retains the resized display. However,
opening a new pdf reverts to the original behaviour.

There should be an option to permanently disable the sidebar, and the
size should be remembered for all openings of all files, since desired
size is more likely dependent on the desktop real estate than on the
document content.

Also, it never makes sense to have side panes, thumbnails or indices for
one-page documents. This is not user-friendly behaviour.

[Bug 427653] Re: cups fails on usb-parallel printer

2009-10-29 Thread Daniel Newman
I don't think these are the same bug, but I agree that Cups has become
more flaky.

In my current Karmic installation, lsusb detects the PL-2305 correctly
as:

Bus 001 Device 007: ID 067b:2305 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2305
Parallel Port

My problem is that the printer connected to the PL-2305 always works for
the first print job after a reboot of the computer, but always fails for
all subsequent print jobs, with the CUPS administration page log saying:

[Bug 444962] Re: shared-mime-info-0.7-ubuntu1 update is broken

2009-10-06 Thread Daniel Newman
Same problem here, nautilus treats every file type as a text file.

But, it's not only nautilus is at fault. Using a terminal to open a pdf
file with evince gives the error message:

File type plain text document (text/plain) is not supported.

However, using eog from a terminal to open a png file works normally,
although the same file can't be opened through nautllus.

File-roller also works normally from a terminal, but fails through
nautilus.

Same bug in my case, but different solution.

The bug appeared when I used su root in a terminal, then tried the
upgrade using apt-get, synaptic, or dpkg.

However, when I used sudo dpkg etc from a user terminal, the
installation finished correctly. I didn't need to make any changes to
/var/lib/gdm.

bug still occurs with cups 1.4.1-2

Printing worked twice after a reboot, but failed on two subsequent

2009-09-16 Thread Daniel Newman
bug is still current with cups 1.4.1-1 and an up-to-date karmic
distribution.

Printing now works the first time after a reboot, but fails on all
subsequent attempts. A typical failure message in the error_log is:

E [17/Sep/2009:11:43:16 +1000] [Job 427] Unable to write 4096 bytes to
printer!

However, the access_log records a success:

localhost - - [17/Sep/2009:11:42:29 +1000] POST /printers/HP-LaserJet-
6L HTTP/1.1 200 25573 Print-Job successful-ok

Using a different printer, accessed via the network, functions normally.

2009-09-11 Thread Daniel Newman
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 420015 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/420015

I don't think it is a duplicate bug.

The usblp module was not installed in the configuration tested above.
However, I followed your instructions, and rebooted as well, before
checking that usblp was not installed and was blacklisted in
/etc/modules.d.

The results were the same as before.

The printer test page printed, but nothing else. When trying to print a
pdf and a png, the cups error log was:

E [11/Sep/2009:19:56:46 +1000] [Job 410] Unable to write 8192 bytes to printer!

[Bug 427653] [NEW] cups fails on usb-parallel printer

2009-09-10 Thread Daniel Newman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

cups has been working correctly on this installation since new. After a
recent upgrade, a HP LaserJet 6L connected via a PRolific PL2305 usb to
parallel interface stopped working. The foomatic/ljet4 driver is used

Using the Print Properties dialog, Print Self-Test Page fails with
the message

[Bug 420471] Re: HDMI output no longer visible in gnome-volume-control

2009-09-07 Thread Daniel Newman
Since reporting this bug, I was able to get pulseaudio o use the HDMI
output by explicitly assigning it to an alsasink in default.pa.
However, it still does not show up in the Hardware list of gnome-volume-
control, and if I remove the explicit assignment it is not detected at
all.

I can confirm this, using:

connected to a HP LaserJet 6L

Attempting to print a test page from the print admin gui results in a
permanent processing message and no action.

The cups error log is empty.

[Bug 420471] [NEW] HDMI output no longer visible in gnome-volume-control

2009-08-28 Thread Daniel Newman
Public bug reported:

System has an internal audio card, and an ATI HD 3450 graphics card with
HDMI audio. I use the HDMI as my normal audio output, through speakers
installed in an ASUS MK241H monitor. Until an upgrade this week, this
worked ok and the HDMI output appeared in the gnome-volume-control
hardware dialog.

Since the first upgrade this week, the HDMI output has vanished from the
gnome-volume-control hardware dialog and sound is not produced by the
attached speakers. The HDMI output is still directly accessible using
the gstreamer-properties dialog, if the default output is changed from
pulseaudio to alsa and the device set to HDMI. However, this bypasses
the pulseaudio system, and makes it impossible to control the speaker
volume.

[Bug 412949] [NEW] octave3.2 depends on unreleased package, but is shown as upgradeable

2009-08-13 Thread Daniel Newman
Public bug reported:

Re: [Bug 335398] Re: virtualbox-ose should not show as auto removable

2009-08-02 Thread Daniel Newman
I tried both apt-get install virtualbox-ose and downloading the .deb,
then using dpkg -i. Both of them had the same result.

However, in the intervening six months I have switched to the sun
virtualbox-2.1 installation, so I'm not able to say if the problem still
applies to the current ose version.

Felix Geyer wrote:
How exactly did you install virtualbox?

This should mark the package as manually installed:
 sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose
 or
 sudo aptitude install virtualbox-oseM

[Bug 403325] [NEW] drag and drop to local folders is offset

2009-07-22 Thread Daniel Newman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release:9.10

thunderbird:
  Installed: 2.0.0.22+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu2

With a Local Folders tree in the sidebar, it should be possible to drag
a message from the inbox and drop it in a local folder by placing the
mouse pointer on the destination local folder name.

When I do this, the folder name whose background is highlighted may be
higher up the tree than the one on which the mouse pointer is resting.
This problem is only noticeable for a long tree. The vertical offset is
zero for the top local folder, and increases for folders further down
the tree. The drop happens in the highlighted folder, not the one
pointed to by the mouse.

I'm guessing there is a slightly over-sized scale factor of line height
vs mouse height somewhere in the process.

[Bug 344655] [NEW] btusb hcitool scan failing

2009-03-17 Thread Daniel Newman
Public bug reported:

A bluetooth usb device is failing to work consistently. The device is a
no-name brand, and the output of lsusb -v is attached.

Trying to pair a Nokia 6310 mobile phone, hcitool scan generally fails
to detect the phone entirely, but intermittently returns its correct
bdaddr without its device name. An example, with the bdaddr replaced by
xxs, is:

hcitool scan --class
Scanning ...

BD Address: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx [mode 1, clkoffset 0x4094]
Device name:n/a
Device class: Phone, Cellular (0x500204)

The same hardware works ok and connects properly under windows xp, using
bluesoleil. The phone also pairs and connects properly using ubuntu
8.10 on a macbook pro with built-in bluetooth.

It looks to me like the btusb or bluez software does not fully handle
this bluetooth device, and maybe has some intermittent timing problems.

[Bug 328887] [NEW] text displayed as boxes

2009-02-12 Thread Daniel Newman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gringotts

Ubuntu release 9.04 (jaunty)

uname -a: 2.6.28-7-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 9 15:42:34 UTC 2009
x86_64 GNU/Linux

gringotts version 1.2.10~pre1-2

Problem occurred after a system update
On startup, all text was displayed as box outlines instead of letters, and
icons were replaced by a small red x.

Running from a terminal, there were lots of warnings of the form:

Pango-WARNING **: /usr/lib/pango/1.6.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.so: failed
to map segment from shared object: Bad address

and

Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'gtk-close' for stock: Unable
to load image-loading module: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/loaders
/libpixbufloader-png.so: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/loaders
/libpixbufloader-png.so: failed to map segment from shared object: Bad
address

This only appears to happen in gringotts - all my other apps seem to be
working normally.

** Affects: gringotts (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 327886] [NEW] modprobe can't load usbhid

2009-02-10 Thread Daniel Newman
Public bug reported:

hardware: MacBookPro1,1

uname: Linux frontinus 2.6.28-7-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 9
15:43:21 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

/etc/initramfs-tools/modules:

usbhid
hid-apple
appletouch
applesmc

After boot, built-in keyboard does not function at all. Remote login
using ssh. The hid-apple, appletouch and applesmc modules are visible
in lsmod, the usbhid module is not. Tried manually installing usbhid
from the remote login, with the following results:

modprobe usbhid
sh: /sbin/modprobe/: Not a directory
FATAL: Error running install command for usbhid

Then tried installing it using:

insmod /lib/modules/2.6.28-7-generic/kernel/drivers/hid/usbhid/usbhid.ko

This worked ok, showed up in dmesg as:

[ 678.040214] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbhid
[ 678.040221] usbhid: v2.6:USB HID core driver

The built-in keyboard was now fully functional, including non-standard
keys.

Re: [Bug 310864] Re: [RS690M] screen randomly blanks for short times

2009-01-22 Thread Daniel Newman
Ok, the attached xorg.conf and log are as requested. I have also
included lspci -vvv for the video card. The card itself is a HIS HD
4350 (see www.hisdigital.com) 64bit card with onboard fan.

These files were generated using radeonhd, trying to connect over DVI to
an ASUS MK241H lcd monitor, which has a native resolution of 1920x1200.

Please let me know if you need any more information

goto wrote:
 Daniel,
so radeonhd gives you no picture at all. Could you please remove the HPD
option from your xorg.conf again and then start x with:
 startx -- -logverbose 7
And then please load up the xorg.0.log.
I need just a bit more information: Which brand has you radeon HD3450, and
which monitor do you try to connect over which connection (VGA/DVI/HDMI...)?
Then I'll forward your bug report, thanks! :)

2009-01-21 Thread Daniel Newman
Tested several times using radeonhd driver with option HPD set to swap
and off. Did not work in either case. The log for HPD off is
attached. Both cases gave a black screen, sometimes with a few pixels
along the top of the screen in white, red or blue.

goto wrote:
Daniel: Please test also if you can get radeonhd to work with the option
 described here:

If no option helps, I'll file a bug report upstream.
 Thanks!

Using xserver-xorg-video-ati package version
1:6.9.0+git20081003.f9826a56-0ubuntu5, X starts and runs in 1920x1200
resolution, although without accelerated graphics.

Using version 1:6.9.0+git20081003.f9826a56-0ubuntu6, boot is normal until
through the Ubuntu splash screen. However, at the stage when the gdm login
would normally appear, it then does one of:
1) blank screen
2) blank screen, with occasional flash back to text mode
3) random garbage on screen in graphics mode
4) low-resolution graphics gray background, with a failure message and three
options for fixing the graphics configuration. None of these work.

Reverting to the 0ubuntu5 package fixes the problem.

[Bug 296839] [NEW] pulseaudio fails to detect hdmi sink

2008-11-11 Thread Daniel Newman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Ubuntu 8.10, 64-bit version on ASUS P3-P5G31 motherboard with on-board
hda_intel audio. Also HIS HD3450 graphics card with integrated RV620
audio, HDMI output while using the fglrx closed-source driver.

pulseaudio:
  Installed: 0.9.10-2ubuntu9

The HDMI audio sink shows up in the alsa mixer and gnome sound
preferences as HDA ATI HDMI, and can be addressed directly through
alsa or gst-launch to produce sound through speakers via the HDMI cable.
It is identified as the second card by aplay:

aplay -l
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC662 Analog [ALC662 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC662 Digital [ALC662 Digital]

  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 2: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

However, the pulseaudio manager devices list only shows one sink, the
integrated audio on the motherboard (card 0, device 0). The RV620 on
the graphics card is ignored. This means that the HDMI speakers can't
be driven through the pulseaudio server.

[Bug 284994] [NEW] bluetooth-wizard unable to pair headset

2008-10-17 Thread Daniel Newman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bluez-gnome

using bluez-gnome version  1.8-0ubuntu1

ubuntu 8.10 intrepid

Tried to pair with a bluetooth headset. Started bluetooth-wizard, with
headset in pairing mode. Headset detected OK and shown on the Device
search display. Selected it and clicked Forward. Under Device
setup, got message setting up new device, then Connecting to X3
micro now.

Then, Please enter the following PIN code: flashed up and
vanished, followed by Pairing with X3 micro failed.

In fact, because it's a headset, there is no way to enter a pin code on
it, and I presume this is why the failure occurred. What is needed is
for the bluetooth-wizard to prompt for the headset's pin code and send
that to the headset, rather than the other way around as is set up at
present.

[Bug 284994] Re: bluetooth-wizard unable to pair headset

2008-10-17 Thread Daniel Newman
I worked around this by editing the source of wizard/main.c, changing
the default value of to the correct one for my headset. See below:

/* Most headsets are using as pincode */
if (target_type == BLUETOOTH_TYPE_HEADSET ||
target_type == BLUETOOTH_TYPE_HEADPHONE)
pincode = 1234;

text = g_strdup_printf(_(Please enter the following PIN code: %s),
pincode);

However, this isn't really a satisfactory solution. The wizard needs to
offer the option of changing the pin code to match whatever hardware is
to be paired.

Please try the package from my PPA. It now only considers maxtapmove for
one-finger taps, or two-finger taps if two-finger scrolling is enabled.

This always makes three-finger taps easy (I was never able to do them

finger taps much easier (unless you have two-finger scrolling enabled,
in which case you want it to be harder).

with version xserver-xorg-input-synaptics_0.15.2-0ubuntu2_i386.deb,
two-finger tapping is not working for me.

I'm using:

Option FingerLow 25
Option FingerHigh 30
Option MaxTapTime 180
Option MaxTapMove 0
Option MaxDoubleTapTime 180

With these settings version
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics_0.15.2-0ubuntu1+wgrant1_i386.deb
was working fine.

[Bug 270002] [NEW] tapping not working

2008-09-13 Thread Daniel Newman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Macbook Pro Core Duo, 15.4in, running kernels 2.6.26.2 or 2.6.27-rc6 and
Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10

Using xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics_0.14.7~git20070706-2.1ubuntu4_i386.deb, two and three finger
tapping work.

Performed a system upgrade on 13 Sep 08, to xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics_0.15.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb.

Two and three finger tapping ceased working. Tried changing xorg.conf,
adjusting MaxTapTime, FingerHigh and FingerLow, but was unable to get
multi-finger tap working again.

Reverted to 0.14.7~git20070706-2.1ubuntu4, leaving all other packages
unchanged, and two and three finger tapping returned to work as before.

[Bug 191889] Re: Firefox always start in offline mode (dial up connections not properly handled by network-manager)

2008-03-07 Thread Daniel Newman
I think it's a firefox bug, not a network-manager one (although I agree
network-manager doesn't handle dialup well). As I said earlier, I run a
http server on the same machine I'm using firefox from. This has
nothing to do with network-manager, but firefox still doesn't do the
logical thing and look for a local server before jumping to offline
mode.

[Bug 191889] Re: Firefox always start in offline mode

2008-02-20 Thread Daniel Newman
Still happens here with network-manager 0.6.5-0ubuntu17 and a USB HSPDA
modem (ppp0). However, apart from that problem there is also the fact
that I run a web server on this machine, for access from this machine
only. This offline mode startup means that firefox never looks for the
localhost server - surely it should do this before looking for network
access?

The problem is with all pdf files. They also opened normally in xpdf
and plain gs. After creating a new user and changing the ownership of
the files I was also able to open them successfully in evince. Looks
like the problem is in my setup, not evince itself. Any suggestions?

OK, on further investigation the problem was in shared-mime-info, not
evince, and the .local/share directory contents were causing things to
go wrong.

Just deleting this directory fixed the problem.

[Bug 187225] [NEW] unhandled file type - fails to open pdf and ps

2008-01-29 Thread Daniel Newman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Using evince_2.21.90-0ubuntu1_i386.deb.

Attempting to open .pdf or .ps files from the command line with evince
results in:

Unable to open document
Unhandled MIME type: “application/x-extension-pdf”

or, sometimes,

Unhandled MIME type: “application/octet-stream”

This is occurring on files which were openable by evince yesterday.
However, this morning I did a system update and now find there is a
problem. tried pdftotext on the files, it works as usual.

[Bug 76109] Re: crashes on file load

However, yesterday I did an update using the ubuntu 1:20070127-1

someone did something that fixed the bug.

ok, upgraded to Version: 1:20061106-1, using the debs from
deb http://people.ubuntu-in.org/~ghoseb/apt-edgy/ edgy main

Tried M-x find-file, load worked ok :)

Tried loading file from menu and toolbar, emacs crashes, leaving message
Fatal error (6)Aborted as before.

upgraded again to Version: 1:20061210-1, using debs from
deb http://debs.peadrop.com edgy backports

Same results as above. In both these more recent snapshots a file can
be loaded for editing from the command line, or using M-x find-file
(***not load-file***) or C-x C-f, but not using the File-Open File menu
or the toolbar.

However, in the most recent version, if I start emacs with a file from
the command line, then use C-x C-f to load another file, then try the
menu to load a third file, very occasionally emacs doesn't crash
immediately. Instead, the following errors appear at the command line:
