[Bug 1802617] Re: After upgrade to 18.10 boot fails on waiting for encrypted source device

2018-11-10 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Candidate Work-around:

For the case of disabling swap, I was able to eliminate the boot-time
error with the following actions:

Remove swap line from /etc/fstab
Remove swap line from /etc/crypttab
Remove /swapfile
apt purge cryptsetup
apt autoremove (clean up cryptsetup dependencies)

The updates to /etc/fstab and /etc/crypttab were not enough to eliminate
the error message at boot. It seems cryptsetup was still doing something
in the boot sequence that caused it to try and create an encrypted swap
file. Purging the cryptsetup package was necessary to eliminate the
error message. Therefore, this issue may be relevant to both the Ubuntu
upgrade process and the cryptsetup package.

[Bug 1802617] [NEW] After upgrade to 18.10 boot fails on waiting for encrypted source device

2018-11-09 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 18.04.1 LTS to 18.10, all reboots of the system
give a boot screen with the error:

"cryptsetup: Waiting for encrypted source device /swapfile..."

After a minute or so, the graphical boot screen with that message is
replaced with a console screen reading:

"ALERT! encrypted source device /swapfile does not exist, can't unlock
cryptswap1.
Check cryptopts=source= bootarg: cat /proc/cmdline
or missing modules, devices: cat /proc/modules; ls /dev

Dropping to a shell

BusyBox v1.27.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.27.2-2ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(initramfs) _"

Typing exit at the initramfs prompt gets the boot to continue. The boot
continues to a working system and graphical login.

The system was configured in 18.04.1 LTS to have encrypted home
directories and no swap file.

It looks like the /etc/fstab got a new swapfile line somewhere during
the upgrade process. However, commenting that out and rebooting does not
affect this issue.

[Bug 1745619] [NEW] Failed to open local calendar with "Timeout was reached"

2018-01-26 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

After booting into a GNOME session, Evolution was started. Mail appeared
as expected. When the Calendar section was opened, none of the calendars
opened including the local calendar. A blue report was printed under the
toolbar with the error that it could not open the local calendar as
"Timeout was reached." It seems odd that there should be a timeout issue
when accessing local data. The local calendar is stored on the save
drive and mount point as the OS and Evolution.

Closing and reopening Evolution did not resolve the issue.

[Bug 1741948] [NEW] Evolution ignores tile window commands in GNOME

2018-01-08 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

As per the Help "Ubuntu Desktop Guide -> Desktop -> Applications and
windows -> Windows and workspaces -> Windows" documentation for "Tile
windows:"

"To maximize a window along a side of the screen, grab the titlebar and
drag it to the left or right side until half of the screen is
highlighted. Using the keyboard, hold down Super and press the Left or
Right key."

When the Evolution main window has focus, the Super + Left and Super +
Right commands are ignored. Additionally, it does not snap to the left
or right when the titlebar is grabbed and dragged to either side of the
screen.

All other GNOME apps do behave as expected. Testing was done with a
GNOME/Xorg session.

[Bug 1741908] [NEW] Calendar Month View Appointment mouse-over context window disappears

2018-01-08 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

In the Calendar Month View of the Evolution user interface, Appointments
are drawn within the day blocks. They begin with the time and the
beginning of the Appointment Summary. When the mouse is moved on top of
the Appointment rectangle, a content window is drawn to show additional
details. However, the context window display amounts to a flicker as it
almost immediately disappears again.

[Bug 1710383] [NEW] Could not install 'gconf2' and upgrade frozen

2017-08-12 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

When performing a distribution upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04.3 xenial to

[Bug 1032456] Re: Canon inkjets (and some other printers) print only half of the last page after 20120801 upgrade to v1.5.3-0ubuntu2

/support-inkjet-printer/mp-series/pixma-mp470) connected via USB to
Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS. As per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems, I applied the
following commands:

$ cancel -a
$ lpq
MP470-series is ready
no entries
$ lpadmin -p MP470-series -o usb-unidir-default=true

I hit "Print Test Page" from the Printers settings dialog. The printer
test page then printed as expected.

[Bug 1086374] Re: Backup cannot be restored (no signature chains found)

2016-08-18 Thread Donald Pellegrino
I deleted my previous remote backup collection and created a new one
using the GUI tools. I then verified the backup using duplicity command
line and it worked as expected.

It seems that the remote backup collection can become corrupted while
the GUI will continue to run daily backups reporting that it verified
them and that the backup completed successfully. This is a critical
defect as it will lead to end-user data loss. Users will believe they
have valid backups even when they are corrupted.

I am adding Unity Control Center to this bug report to address the
interaction effect between the GUI in System Settings reporting that
backups are succeeding and the state of a corrupted backup in duplicity.

[Bug 1086374] Re: Backup cannot be restored (no signature chains found)

2016-08-18 Thread Donald Pellegrino
I am seeing this behavior with duplicity 0.7.08 on Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS.
The Backups GUI in System Settings reports that it is running backups
successfully and new backup files are being created in the remote
location. However, the duplicity command line is unable to run
collection-status or list-current-files without error when pointed to
the same remote as specified in the System Settings GUI.

This behavior does not occur on every start of GnuCash. I am able to
reproduce it periodically. It seems to occur when GnuCash is one of the
first programs run after booting the system.

[Bug 1594047] Re: menus do not appear in the menu bar

2016-07-24 Thread Donald Pellegrino
The unity "System Settings," "Appearance," "Behavior," "Show the menus
for a window" setting takes two options: "In the menu bar" or "In the
window's title bar." Wolfram Mathematica, GNU Emacs, Java applications,
and possibly others display menus under the window's title bar in the
traditional way. This happens regardless of the value of "Show the menus
for a window." In addition, applications run as a different user than
the desktop user are also unable to render menus as per the setting.

The unity interface does not have an option to show menus under the window's
title bar. Therefore, it is impossible to maintain a consistent user
experience. Menus cannot be shown in the same location
for all applications.

If moving the menu bar is a goal, then one way to approach the problem
might be to use separate bugs for each widget toolkit, application, and
type of use. For example:

* Bug #1596369 for Java applications using Swing
* Bug for Wolfram Mathematica. May not be fixable if application code must be
changed.
* Bug for GNU/Emacs
* Bug for running applications as a another user than the desktop user

It would also be useful to provide users an option for the traditional
behavior:

* Bug to add "Below the window's title bar" to the Appearance system
settings.

[Bug 1604969] [NEW] GnuCash fails to start showing only a blank dialog

2016-07-20 Thread Donald Pellegrino

[Bug 1603304] Re: Window title bars not shown with Radiance theme

2016-07-16 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Summary of test sequence:

0. Baseline 16.04 LTS works as expected
1. Apply updates
2. Reboot
3. Observe that Unity session renders title bars in dark gray of Ambiance theme
even though Radiance is selected.
4. Observe that changing from Radiance to Ambiance and back to Radiance does
not resolve the issue. Title bars remain dark gray. Set to Ambiance since that
is the one that is consistent.
5. Reboot
6. Change Theme from Ambiance to Radiance
7. Observe that title bars now render as expected in light gray

After a reboot, I found that selecting Theme Radiance from Appearance

reproduce the reported behavior and generate a screenshot. Perhaps this
was an artifact of applying updates during an active Unity session.

[Bug 1603304] [NEW] Window title bars not shown with Radiance theme

2016-07-14 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

After applying updates on July 15, 2016 and rebooting, the session now
shows window title bars with the dark gray of the Ambiance theme. The
theme had been set to Radiance. I confirmed that the System Settings ->
Appearance -> Theme is still set to Radiance.

The expected behavior is that Window title bars display in a lighter
color consistent with the selected theme of Radiance.

[Bug 1600053] [NEW] system scaling factor ignored for page rendering

2016-07-07 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

Mozilla Firefox has a layout.css.dpi preference with a default value of
-1. This preference is documented as:

"Use the host system’s logical resolution or 96, whichever is greater,
for interpreting dimensions specified in absolute units. (Default)" as
per http://kb.mozillazine.org/Layout.css.dpi

On Linux, the value of -1 should cause Firefox to use the GTK scaling
factor. Additional details are available in Mozilla Bug 712898
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=712898).

Unity System Settings -> Displays includes a slider for "Scale for menu
and title bars." When set to 1.12 instead of the default value of 1, the
text on all GTK dialogs including body text, menus, and title bars are
all scaled. In addition, the text in Terminal is scaled. In Firefox, the
text in about:preferences is scaled consistent with the elements of
other applications. However, the page rendering is not scaled. Page
scaling seems to be unaffected by the system setting.

The expected behavior is that the scale value set in System Settings ->
Displays should affect Firefox page rendering when the Firefox
layout.css.dpi preference has its default value of -1.

[Bug 1599662] [NEW] Backups Folders to ignore list shows duplicates

2016-07-06 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

The System Settings -> Backups -> Folders to ignore list sometimes shows
duplicate entries. Sometimes it shows the list as it should. Navigating
from the Folders to ignore list back to All Settings, and then back to
Backups,Folders to ignore produces inconsistent results.

[Bug 1599657] [NEW] Backups Folders to ignore are not ignored

2016-07-06 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

System Settings -> Backups -> Folders to ignore, includes ~/.cache in
the list. However, after logging into a new Unity session, the backup
runs automatically and reports that the backup failed because it could
not read ~/.cache/dconf. The directory is owned by root and not readable
by the user account. Therefore, it is expected that the backup process
would not be able to read it.

ls -al ~/.cache
drwx-- 2 root root4096 Jul 1 16:25 dconf

It is also expected that the backup process should not attempt to read
~/.cache/dconf since the parent ~/.cache is in the Folder to ignore
list.

[Bug 1594035] Re: unable to shut down the system after suspend / resume

2016-07-01 Thread Donald Pellegrino
As noted by @loyeyoung, a better work-around than the one in Comment #2
may be to disable swap rather than running with an encrypted home
directory and unencrypted swap as that state is a security liability.
For the case where hibernate depends on swap, hibernate would also need
to be disabled.

[Bug 1598313] [NEW] Files icon disappears from Launcher

2016-07-01 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Files is not running. No Files windows are open.
2. Unlock Files from the Launcher - it is removed from the Launcher
3. Use the Ubuntu keyboard button to open the Dash
4. Type Files and hit enter to open a Files window
5. Observe that the Files icon for the new window appears on the Launcher
6. Observe that the Files icon then disappears from the Launcher a second later
without any actions having been taken by the user

Expected Behavior

Step 6 should not occur. When Files in run and a Files window is open,
then the Files icon should show on the Launcher with appropriate
indicator for the corresponding open window.

The test system did not exhibit this behavior before July 1, 2016. Some
updates were applied via aptitude on July 1, 2016. A recent update may
have triggered this bug.

[Bug 1596369] [NEW] java ignores menu and font size Unity preferences

2016-06-26 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

When running a Java application (Stanford Protege Desktop 5.0.0 -
http://protege.stanford.edu/) the user interface displays menus within
the main application frame. However, the Settings, Appearance, Behavior,
"Show the menus for a windows setting" is set to "In the menu bar." In
addition, the font size shown in the Java application is much smaller
than that shown in other applications. The Settings, Universal Access,
Seeing, "Large Text" setting is On.

[Bug 1596355] [NEW] Help button in Edit Account dialog fails

2016-06-26 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

When in the "Edit Account" dialog, there is a "Help" button in the lower
left. When this button is clicked, the mouse pointer changes from a
pointer icon to the active processing icon for about 15 seconds. It then
changes back to a pointer icon without any other action. No help dialog
is created. The expected behavior is that pressing this Help button
should generate a Help dialog box navigated to the relevant section of
the documentation.

[Bug 1594641] [NEW] removing swap partition does not remove entry from /etc/fstab

2016-06-20 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

I used gnome-disk-utility to deactivate the swap partition. I then used
it to delete the swap partition. Both operations seem to have worked in
gnome-disk-utility however it is not clear that the free space size
increased correspondingly. The entry for the swap partition in
/etc/fstab remained and still pointed to the partition that was deleted
in gnome-disk-utility.

The expected behavior is that when a swap partition is deleted in gnome-
disk-utility the corresponding /etc/fstab entry should also be removed.

[Bug 1594047] Re: menus do not appear in the menu bar

2016-06-20 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Thanks for the explanation @janc. This creates an inconsistency for the
user experience in Unity. Since this is a systematic issue affecting all
applications run as a different user than the desktop user, it seems
more appropriate to file this bug under the unity package.

[Bug 1594047] [NEW] menus do not appear in the menu bar

2016-06-18 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

Menus for the GParted user interface running under Unity are not
affected by the system's Appearance settings for Behavior, Show the
menus for a window, In the menu bar. Instead the menus appear within the
main GParted window frame above the application's tool bar.

[Bug 1594035] Re: unable to shut down the system after suspend / resume

2016-06-18 Thread Donald Pellegrino
I confirmed that disabling encrypted swap is a work-around for the
inability to shut down. I commented out the cryptswap1 entry from
/etc/crypttab:

$ diff /etc/crypttab /etc/crypttab~
1c1
< # cryptswap1 UUID=d1bd47b1-9969-4cf6-bb7e-482a50b41ffa /dev/urandom
swap,offset=1024,cipher=aes-xts-plain64
---
> cryptswap1 UUID=d1bd47b1-9969-4cf6-bb7e-482a50b41ffa /dev/urandom
> swap,offset=1024,cipher=aes-xts-plain64

I also set /etc/fstab to use the swap partition directly rather than
/dev/mapper/cryptswap1:

$ diff /etc/fstab /etc/fstab~
16,17c16,17
< UUID=d1bd47b1-9969-4cf6-bb7e-482a50b41ffa none swap sw 0 0
< #/dev/mapper/cryptswap1 none swap sw 0 0
---
> #UUID=d1bd47b1-9969-4cf6-bb7e-482a50b41ffa none swap sw 0 0
> /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 none swap sw 0 0

On this machine, it seems encrypted swap was not working anyway as per
lines in the attached JournalErrors.txt:

Jun 18 17:56:14 username-Lemur systemd-cryptsetup[446]: Failed to activate with
key file '/dev/urandom': Device or resource busy
...
Jun 18 17:56:18 username-Lemur systemd-cryptsetup[446]: Loading of
cryptographic parameters failed: Invalid argument

Jun 18 17:56:18 username-Lemur systemd-cryptsetup[805]: Failed to activate with
key file '/dev/urandom': Device or resource busy

With encrypted swap disabled as per the changes to /etc/crypttab and
/etc/fstab, the machine now shuts down as expected even when
suspend/resume cycles occur during the user session.

[Bug 1594035] [NEW] unable to shut down the system after suspend / resume

2016-06-18 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

In the case of a system that has gone through a suspend / resume cycle,
the "shutdown now" command fails with the following output:

$ shutdown now
Failed to power off system via logind: Transaction is destructive.
Failed to start poweroff.target: Interactive authentication required.
See system logs and 'systemctl status poweroff.target' for details.
Failed to open /dev/initctl: Permission denied
Failed to talk to init daemon.

---

$ systemctl status poweroff.target
● poweroff.target - Power-Off
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/poweroff.target; disabled; vendor preset:
   Active: inactive (dead)
 Docs: man:systemd.special(7)

---

$ systemctl list-jobs
JOB UNIT TYPE STATE
438 dev-mapper-cryptswap1.device start running
439 dev-mapper-cryptswap1.swapstart waiting
436 systemd-cryptsetup@cryptswap1.service start running

3 jobs listed.

---

Steps to reproduce:

1. Boot system
2. User login to graphical session
3. Close lid while on battery power triggering a suspend
4. Open lid while on battery power triggering a resume
5. Run "shutdown now" from a terminal. Note that the command must be run from
the terminal to see output. Selecting "Shut Down..." from the system menu in
the menu bar will hide the error output.
6. Observe that the system fails to shut down

Expected behavior:

At step 6, the system should shut down gracefully.

Note that the shutdown process works as expected if steps 3 and 4 are
skipped. I suspect that something about the suspend / resume cycle
during the session has an interaction effect with the shutdown process,
preventing it from executing correctly.

[Bug 1587189] [NEW] progress hangs at half when installing updates

2016-05-30 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Software was run manually. The Updates tab was selected and one
update was reported. The item was OS Update. The button was clicked to
install the update.

The expected behavior was that installation should proceed consistently
to 100%.

The observed behavior is that the button label changes to Installing and
the button progress bar progresses to about 50%. At 50% the progress
stops and it just sits there without any other visible output to the X
session. The Ubuntu Software application is still responsive. It is
possible to select the All and Installed tabs and the display will
update as expected. However, the Updates tab remains stuck on 50%.
