Actually the version lock might be the problem:
  psycopg2 (= 2.4.1),

while Precise currently seems to have 2.4.4-3.

[Bug 843231] [NEW] alt+shift+tab invokes old-style switcher

2011-09-06 Thread Elliot Murphy
Public bug reported:

When I press alt+tab, I see the new style switcher as expected.
Continuing to hold down alt, and then pressing shift+tab, the selection goes
backwards as expected.
Releasing all keys, and then pressing alt+shift+tab, I see the older style
switcher invoked, but I expect to see the new style switcher always. Attaching
screenshots.

[Bug 843250] [NEW] Alt+Shift+` does not work in symmetry with Alt+`

2011-09-06 Thread Elliot Murphy
Public bug reported:

To set up my environment I open firefox with several tabs, and several windows.
When I press Alt+` I see the window switcher as expected letting me switch
between open windows of the firefox application (screenshot attached).
When I continue holding down Alt and press shift+` the selection does not move
backward as expected (compare with alt+tab/alt+shift+tab).
When I release all keys and then press Alt+Shift+`, rather than invoking the
window switcher my firefox tab selection is changed.

[Bug 843310] [NEW] Unity build is not parallel safe (-j 4 fails)

2011-09-06 Thread Elliot Murphy
Public bug reported:

Trying to build unity trunk (r1497) with make -j4 some of the build fails due
to misisng unity-core-4.0, which is built a few seconds later. Building in
serial rather than parallel completes just fine.
Probably only reproducible on pristine builds.

Linking CXX executable test-minimize-handler
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lunity-core-4.0

Linking CXX executable test-input-remover
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lunity-core-4.0

Are the two specific targets that I saw error out, but others may be
missing a dependency as well.

[Bug 643787] Re: certificate verifcation does not work with newSSL

2010-10-01 Thread Elliot Murphy
This fix is a prerequisite for LP: #422178. I am attaching the debdiff
per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

This is a patch from upstream Erlang developers in Erlang/OTP team at
Ericsson which fixes a serious problem in the SSL library that was
preventing SSL host certificate verification from happening (we
discovered the problem while working on CouchDB).

[Bug 615224] [NEW] Update to CouchDB 1.0.1 to fix data loss bug

2010-08-08 Thread Elliot Murphy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: couchdb

Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 3 has CouchDB 1.0, which is affected by a serious
data loss bug: http://couchdb.apache.org/notice/1.0.1.html

It should be updated to CouchDB 1.0.1 as soon as the release is cut
(next couple of days). This bugfix-only micro release also includes some
other important fixes that should be included. I am not simply distro
patching the bugfix for the data loss issue because it is spread across
several files and several different commits by different people over a
couple of days, and I think we should ship the official 1.0.1 release
that has been carefully tested rather than cherry-picking out this one
patch and possibly getting it wrong.

[Bug 587108] Re: fresh install couchdb dumps errors and crash report into log file

2010-05-29 Thread Elliot Murphy
The error: {error_info,{exit,eaddrinuse,

makes me think there is another couchdb instance already running. Can
you tell me more of the story of how you went about setting this up (I
just want to be able to think through what could have happened so that
things ended up like this)?

I'll also explain some more about CouchDB in Ubuntu just in case it
helps with understanding how things fit together, and then maybe some
other clues will show up about where the bug is.

In Ubuntu, we use couchdb as part of the standard desktop installation,
but don't run a system-wide CouchDB instance on the default port. This
is done with the desktopcouch package and python module. If you are
looking to write a user application with CouchDB, I recommend looking at
quickly, desktopcouch, and slipcover to get some ideas for what is
possible - none of this is advertised very well right now but we will be
adding a lot of info on it to the new developer manual in 10.10.

If you are looking to write a server application that communicates with
a standard CouchDB on the system port, installing the couchdb package
should take care of bringing the server up for you, and futon should
work ok. The couchdb package actually only contains the init script, all
the binaries are in the couchdb-bin package.

CouchDB depends on having a javascript engine available, and it uses
libmozjs.so (this is the mozilla spidermonkey js engine). In Ubuntu,
this library is only available as part of the xulrunner package, and
I've seen some interesting crash situations before where couchdb
appeared to load ok, but as soon as you tried to use something like
futon it would crash when trying to load a missing libmozjs.so. From the
error report you pasted it looks like a port conflict rather than a
missing .so, but I'm mentioning it just in case you are working on a
server app and start wondering why xulrunner is pulled in when
installing couchdb.

[Bug 587108] Re: fresh install couchdb dumps errors and crash report into log file

2010-05-29 Thread Elliot Murphy
Thanks for the info. Could you also attach your ini file for couch? It
really seems like one couchdb is starting ok and working, and a second
couchdb is in a respawn loop and shutting down with an error when it
can't bind to the already in use port.

[Bug 521989] Re: errors when importing WorkingTree on a thread due to signals

2010-03-24 Thread Elliot Murphy
Hi Ubuntu release team, I think this bugfix release is worthy of going
into Lucid immediately. This bug breaks Ubuntu One servers, trac-bzr,
and I suspect it may break loggerhead as well.

I've briefly reviewed the other bugfixes included in this micro release,
and see nothing that should block this from going into Lucid before
beta2.

2010-03-10 Thread Elliot Murphy
Thanks for using Ubuntu, and for your bug report. I'm closing this report as
your last comments indicated it is working now.
We are listening to feedback, and your point about Tomboy and file syncing each
needing a different authorization is a good one. We'll work on making this more
intuitive and obvious - or perhaps even getting them to share a token.

2010-03-10 Thread Elliot Murphy
ick. we don't want to have this dependency on simplejson, we should only
import that as a fallback in python2.5 environments (hardy servers). I
thought we already handled this everywhere, but looks like we missed a
spot. Putting a branch up to fix this now.

[Bug 460974] Re: Replication log contains token and token secret so can't be pastebinned

2010-03-07 Thread Elliot Murphy
This bug was about sanitizing the secret tokens out of log messages.
That code is working as intended. Bug #533769 shows that the log
messages do have the secret tokens scrubbed. That bug also shows that an
erlang crash dump still contains the secret tokens, and have not been
scrubbed.

Regardless of the language, core dumps, backtraces, tracebacks, all may
have sensitive information in them, and there are policies set up with
the bugsquad triage guidelines to be sure that this info stays private.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage/

Here is the logfile excerpt from the other bug:

In principle, I think it is a very bad idea to try and scrub data out of
a python exception that goes into the log. This is a python exception
wrapping an HTTP 500 errror from CouchDB, with an erlang crash report
stuffed into the body of the 500 page. However, because the format of
the erlang crash reports is so strict and regular, I wonder whether it
would be reasonable to try and parse out the line {token_secret,
Secret!}.

Even if we did this, it would not guarantee that couchdb crash info that
went into the log file would be safe for the public to see. I think this
bug should be put back to fix committed, and we should not try to
sanitize python exceptions before they are written to the log. It's just
my opinion though, if it's actually easy to do and there is some
precedent for programs reaching in and stripping data out of exceptions
before logging them, I'm willing to be convinced :)

[Bug 528220] Re: FFe: Sync rabbitmq-server 1.7.2-1 (main) from Debian sid (main)

2010-03-01 Thread Elliot Murphy
Hi Martin, upstream does not publish a changelog which is why I asked
for an upstream rabbitMQ developer to write in this bug report. You can
see the results here, and I think they meet the criteria for bugfixes:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rabbitmq-
server/+bug/528220/comments/1

The only thing that could be argued as a new feature is that rabbitmqctl
now has 'list_channels and 'list_consumers' commands. I consider those
low risk and important to get in as they are fixing serious shortcomings
in the ability of a sysadmin to figure out what is going on with a
production rabbitMQ server.

Re: [Bug 528265] Re: oauth credential setup involves communication with localhost

2010-02-27 Thread Elliot Murphy
Noscript is crack and it's author has been caught putting very questionable
code in. If people have noscript installed my answer is always to
remove/disable it if they want support. That said, this design for oauth via
the browser causes plenty of confusion for users (much of it comes from a
broken xdg-open), and we are working on changing the auth mechanism to
happen in the control panel app instead of the browser so that it's less
scary and fragile. The fundamental model using oauth is not currently
changing though, we're just making it harder to notice.

[Bug 528274] Re: syncdaemon should have AppArmor profile

Hi Kees, this is a great idea, and thank you for creating the initial
profile! I believe this initial profile is too restrictive, as in Lucid
users can tell the syncdaemon to manage any folder in their home

everything in the users home directory, or is something more complex

I have spoken with RabbitMQ upstream and would like to get the 1.7.2

believe this is a bugfix only release and appropriate for upload at

about what bugs are fixed in this release and to confirm my understanding
that this is a bugfix only point release, not a new feature release.

Re: [Bug 495140] Re: Please sync oprofile from debian testing

2010-02-24 Thread Elliot Murphy
Elliot, since you say an additional change is needed that's not in the
Debian package, should I sync this now or do you want to prepare an
upload of 0.9.6 with your fix?

Thank you Steve! I would be happy to prepare an upload on Thursday
(tomorrow), I'm just wrapping up at PyCon and about to get on a plane.
I am a bit uncertain about the correct way to prepare this upload with
bzr: I think we want lp:debian/sid/oprofile with a new changelog entry
and my postinst script that creates the needed oprofile user.

Would it be correct to go into a branch of lp:ubuntu/lucid/oprofile,
merge in lp:debian/sid/oprofile? What would be the correct way to
merge the changelog, should the previous ubuntu changelog entries be
preserved or thrown away?

[Bug 525932] [NEW] opjitconv is not installed, breaking oprofiling of Python Unladen Swallow JIT (or anything else that uses LLVM JIT)

2010-02-22 Thread Elliot Murphy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: oprofile

Working on http://code.google.com/p/unladen-swallow/ at PyCon 2010, I
discovered that oprofile does not work for samples emitted by the LLVM
JIT (they show up as anonymous rather than being linked to the python
source, line and name).

The problem is that the oprofile package was not installing the
opjitconv binary which is needed for opreport to be able to create
useful reports on the JIT samples.

I have built an tested a package which does install opjitconv, and this
enables profiling to work as expected. I will propose a branch for this
now, and would like to also push this fix back into Karmic as it should
be very low risk and the missing binary makes it very hard for anyone
wanting to do profiling to speed up python.

[Bug 525932] Re: opjitconv is not installed, breaking oprofiling of Python Unladen Swallow JIT (or anything else that uses LLVM JIT)

2010-02-22 Thread Elliot Murphy
The last upload fixed a major part of the problem, but overlooked that
an oprofile system user needed to be created. If the user does not
exist, then JIT profiling silently fails. see README_PACKAGERS in the
oprofile source distribution for more info. Pushed up a second branch
for review which takes care of adding the user, and confirmed that JIT
profiling now works fine with this version of the package.

[Bug 495140] Re: Please sync oprofile from debian testing

2010-02-22 Thread Elliot Murphy
Bringing oprofile 0.9.6 into Lucid is a good idea, I feel like this will
solve more problems than it introduces. This version fixes many problems
with profiling, including making it usable on 64bit machines (previous
versions had a problem with a 32bit overflow, making profiling only
useful on 32 bit machines).

I believe that we still need the postinst file that I proposed for
merging here:
https://code.edge.launchpad.net/~statik/ubuntu/lucid/oprofile/really-
fix-jit-profiling/+merge/19925 in order to enable JIT profiling to work
(this is needed by the team working on Unladen Swallow).

[Bug 515349] Re: Sync foolscap 0.5.0+dfsg-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-01-31 Thread Elliot Murphy
Debian import freeze is on Feb 11th, I expect that foolscap will migrate
to testing and miss import freeze by 1 day. If it's really necessary for
me to wait 10 days and then re-request this, I can, but I was hoping to
avoid that delay. The reason I want to get this synced sooner rather
than later is because it's a dependency for Tahoe-LAFS, and Zooko was
trying to get the new Tahoe-LAFS release done before Lucid freeze and
would like to be able to rely on the new version of foolscap. I went
ahead and first updated foolscap in debian as a courtesy to try and make
this new package available as widely as possible, but I'd like to avoid
the delay for waiting for the migration to testing.

The two rdepends for this package are ipython and Tahoe-LAFS, and I've
tested that ipython parallel computation engine works fine with this new
version of foolscap, so it should be a very low-risk update.

[Bug 506985] Re: Upgrade from rabbitmq-server 1.54 - 1.7.0 wiped users and vhosts

I'm confused about how to do this, debian policy states that A special
exception is made for packages which declare that they break their own
package name or a virtual package which they provide (see below): this
does not count as a real breakage.. http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-

I've tried adding a Breaks: rabbitmq-server ( 1.5.4-0) and don't see
any warning or complaint when trying to install with dpkg when 1.5.4 is

[Bug 507301] Re: Ubuntu One web UI not showing files

2010-01-13 Thread Elliot Murphy
Hi! Sorry you ran into this problem. I changed the summary because from
what I read in the description there was no data loss, although the web
UI was not showing files. I can tell you more about what happened -
there was a subtle change to a database index that worked fine in
testing but caused some performance problems in production. It took us a
couple of hours to track down why the queries were running so slowly,
and during that time the web UI would time out before it could get a
response from the database when trying to populate the file view.

I believe this problem is fix released now, if you notice any other
problems or are still not seeing the correct behavior, please do reopen
