[Bug 67826] Re: Boot starts with: setting mode nnn x nnn failed

2009-11-21 Thread G.G.
This is really the same as installing the driver manually but it make the
install automated.
Do any of you have EnvyNG on your machines?
I have EnvyNG on two of my desktops and when run the program it will give you
three choices for Nvidia/ATI drivers.
Maybe it's worth a shot.

Gotcha,
I thought maybe if you tried one of the three drivers that EnvyNG supplies,
that maybe your problem would be fixed. I have a Dell monitor and it's set for
1440x900 and I used to get this error but don't anymore.

I think I'm using the previous version of the flash 10 player.  I'm
going to try and remember to install when I get home.  Even with it's
quirks, I still love linux.  I'm using Linux Mint by the way but it's
still Ubuntu underneath.  A co-worker asked my why I like Linux.  I
said, It's free.  He said, I got a free version of windows 7 from a
friend.  I said, It's updated more often and I don't  have to worry
about viruses and spyware as much.

[Bug 213837] Re: Unable to display some opengl screensavers

2008-12-10 Thread G.G.
The best fix for this problem is to install Envy for kubuntu 7.10 or EnvyNG for

I'm now using kubuntu 8.04 on this pc.
Now all my opengl screensavers work on both my pcs with Nvida video cards.

[Bug 233942] Re: genisoimage generates wrong DVD-Video images

2008-09-25 Thread G.G.
I'm using Kubuntu 8.04. I burn DVDs with k3b and use remastersys.
When installing genisoimage_1.1.6-1ubuntu3_i386.deb, windows is able to see
DVDs that I have burned but remastersys no longer works.
My temp fix.
Install genisoimage_1.1.6-1ubuntu3_i386.deb when I need to burn DVDs and use
them on windows.
Install genisoimage_1.1.6-1ubuntu6_i386.deb when I need to create an image of
my system using remastersys.
I'll try the cdrtools 2.01.01a48 and see if remastersys still works.

Info on remastersys:
It was initially created to be able to easily backup or create a distributable
copy of an Ubuntu or derivative installation. Inspiration for this tool came
from the mklivecd script that Mandriva uses and the remasterme script that is
in PCLinuxOS. Since those scripts are not very easy to port to Ubuntu, it was
written from scratch.

It is a very useful and easy way to create a customized Live CD/DVD
version of Ubuntu, once the system is installed and configured with
programs, updates, etc... the user just has to:

1. Download and install the latest version of Remastersys from:
http://remastersys.klikit-linux.com/repository/remastersys/
2. Open the program (a shortcut is created on the desktop) and then choose the
dist or backup option, and then the iso of the Live CD will be automatically
created.

The resulting iso can also be installed on a USB pendrive, creating a
Live USB distro, using either a command-line approach[2] or a graphical
tool such as UNetbootin.

It has a command line version and a GUI version. It currently works with
Ubuntu, and possibly more Ubuntu-based distributions.
The latest version of Ubuntu (8.04) is already supported

2008-09-11 Thread G.G.
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 233942 ***

installing genisoimage_1.1.6-1ubuntu3_i386.deb removes remastersys.
when I put remastersys back on using Adept Manager it puts
genisoimage_1.1.6-1ubuntu6_i386.deb back on. when I install
genisoimage_1.1.6-1ubuntu3_i386.deb back on and I check to see if
remastersys is installed, I try to run it and it never opens

When I run remastersys from the terminal instead of the program menu I see one
of the following errors:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  remastersys: Depends: mkisofs

So, remastersys is one program that's affected when downgrading

I was told that installing geniso 1.1.6 would fix this problem.
I just tried this on a Dell optiplex 745 with a dvd rom / cdrw and I still
can't view dvds burning using kb3 and geniso 1.1.6. I'm using a dvd-rw so maybe
that's part of the problem. Anyone able to view dvds burned using a dvd-rw with

I guess I'll try genisoimage 1.1.2 and see if that fixes my problem.

[Bug 266965] Re: intel 945 unable to display correct video resolution

2008-09-06 Thread G.G.
I have a Dell D620 laptop with an Intel 945 video chipset. I'm tried
part of an xorg.conf from an online user to see if it will fix my
incorrect resolution problem and unable to use screensaver problem.

I copied this info to my xorg.conf
Section Device
Identifier Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated
Graphics Controller
Driver intel
BusID PCI:0:2:0
EndSection

Section Monitor
Identifier Generic Monitor
Option DPMS

Graphics Controller
Monitor Generic Monitor
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection Display
Modes 1280x800
EndSubSection
EndSection

Hmmm. I turned on the laptop this morning and I got a text login. After logging
in it used the root account instead of my account. The video settings were
correct when I turned on the laptop this morning. I'm not sure how that
happened. The settings that I cut and pasted in the xorg.conf last night from
above are gone. I did an exit and logout then logged in as me and set the video
to 1280x800. I have no idea what happened overnite. I had to do a
dpkg-reconfigure in order to get my gui login back and I told it to use the
frame buffer. I'm not sure if that's necessary. Concidently, my original
xorg.conf looked kinda similar. Well, I went ahead and took the frame buffer
stuff out but I still can't view opengl screensavers. When this happened on my
kubuntu desktop with a Nvidia card it was a driver problem. I have the
correct screen resolution on my laptop now but I still can't view opengl
screensavers on kubuntu 8.04.1.

Here is my partial new xorg.conf

open terminal
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
EndSection

Section Monitor
Identifier Configured Monitor
EndSection

Section Screen
Identifier Default Screen
Monitor Configured Monitor
Device Configured Video Device
EndSection

By the way, I've been Microsoft/windows free for about 8 months and I'm
loving it!

still doesn't change the resolution to 1280x800.
I'm using Kubuntu 8.04.1

[Bug 250043] [NEW] unable to play a dvd using kaffeine and two drive drives in one desktop

2008-07-19 Thread G.G.
Public bug reported:

unable to play a dvd using kaffeine and two drive drives in one desktop
I have two DVD drives in my desktop.

Dvd drive #2 can play DVDs while dvd drive #1 can't unless I manually change
the xine engine setting but then dvd drive #2 can't anymore
Is there any way to get two DVD drives to play a DVD in the same desktop using
one xine engine setting?

using xine engine setting /dev/scd0 dvd drive #1 works but dvd drive #2 does
not work
using xine engine setting /dev/scd1 dvd drive #2 works but dvd drive #1 does
not work
my initial configuration was /dev/dvd dvd drive #2 works but dvd drive #1 does
not work
so it seems using xine engine setting /dev/dvd is the same as xine engine
setting /dev/scd1 at least in my desktop with two dvd drives.
until there is a fix for this, I'll keep using /dev/scd0 for my xine engine
setting for the primary dvd drive that I want to use

[Bug 241596] [NEW] thunderbird - unable to use wave file for new email message arrival

2008-06-20 Thread G.G.
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure if this is a kubuntu bug or mozilla thunderbird bug.

Thunderbird version 2.0.0.14 (20080505)
Kubuntu 8.04

When I import a wav file to be used for a new email message sound, thunderbird
locks up. I've tried two different wave files. I'm able to play these wave
files using Amarok so they wave files do work just not when trying to import
and play them using Thunderbird.

Steps to reproduce error:
1.open thunderbird, edit, preferences, general
2.play a sound, use the following sound file
3. browse, open, play and thunderbird locks up

Results:
thunderbird locks up every time steps 1-3 are done

When sending myself an email to test and see if the sounds works, thunderbird
causes the operating system to not respond. I have to right click on the
thunderbird program and terminate the session.

By the way, I've even tried wave files that are included with kubuntu.
I've tried more than one wave file.
I always get the same result.
I've also tried these wave files that come with kubuntu:
kde_startup.wav and kde_logout.wav
It also seems like only .wav files are accepted for import into thunderbird.
The program doesn't seem to use *.ogg files.

Nothing else is using sound when I try to play a sound when new email arrives.
Seems like other folks have posted this problem about thunderbird.
The default setting is default system sound for new mail. I'll try telling
kde to use a certain sound for thunderbird.

I want to use a custom wave file my my incoming thunderbird email. I
just wanted to test a wave file that comes with kubuntu to verify that
it's not my yabba.wav sound file causing the problem. I have a yabba.wav
file (Fred Flintstone) that I used to use with outlook express for
windows xp when new mail arrived. I just mentioned kde_startup.zip and
kde_logout.zip because every has those wave files if they have
kde/kubuntu. This way everyone could see what happens when they try a
wave file using my method. I'm back to square one because I want to use
my yabba.wav or some other wave file that doesn't come with kde/kubuntu.

I tried the kmail option and using my yabba.wav file. I'm modify the execute a
path part and put thunderbird email info there and see if that works.
Using the kmail option in the kde control panel didnt' work.

It looks like the kde control panel is good for wav or ogg files that come with
kde/kubuntu and kde/kubuntu apps. If you want this to apply to a third party
program, it's harder to get working using the control panel.
I tried using my sound file another way and I still don't get sound with an
incoming email.

I tried the following suggestion per this post and thunderbird still locks up
when I get an incoming email. I tried the add-on mailbox alert.

[Bug 240140] [NEW] Unable to rename Wine Macromedia icons using kde menu editor

I'm unable to save edited filenames for about three Macromedia programs using

When using the editor it says the program titles have been renamed but once I

[Bug 222289] Re: Moodin screens are chopped off on the right side

Fingerprint is 1280x1024

MoodinKDE is 1280x1024

The two that do not work have the same resolution.
I wonder if I resized fingerprint and moodinkde to 1024x768 would that
work? I went back to 7.10. I might try 8.10 when it arrives.

[Bug 198429] Re: Unable to save bookmarks.xml

2008-04-07 Thread G.G.
I'm still getting this error. I have tried about three or four things.
I even logged in as root and changed the permissions for the file to my
username and my name as the group.
When logging out as root and back in as me, the error still happens even though
I have user and group ownership.
I just checked again and root has user and group ownership again.
