[Bug 1866038] [NEW] By default install Noto fonts for Unicode ranges not already covered by default

2020-03-04 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

There is currently movement towards protecting browser users from font
fingerprinting. This means refusing, by default, to load user-installed
fonts, which makes the set of fonts that each OS installs by default
even more important than before.

Firefox bug:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1582687

W3C CSS WG issue:
https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/4497

Currently, Windows 10, macOS, Android, Chrome OS, and, to a lesser
extent, Fedora provide broader installed-by-default Unicode coverage
than Ubuntu.

Examples of living scripts that have enough active users to make it to
the list at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_writing_systems#List_of_writing_scripts_by_adoption
but are not supported by default in Eoan include Javanese, Sundanese,
Batak, Balinese, Modern Yi, Mongolian, and New Tai Lue.

Egyptian hieroglyphs is an example of a dead script the Eoan doesn't
support but Windows 10, macOS, Chrome OS, and Android do support.

To remedy this with minimal disk space impact, I suggest the same
approach that Apple took. Apple bundles with macOS those Noto fonts that
cover scripts that were not already covered by the previous installed-
by-default set of fonts on macOS. In the macOS case, the on-disk
footprint of the Noto fonts that were required to take macOS to
Android/Chrome OS-competitive Unicode coverage was only a couple of
megabytes. (The fonts are hidden in /Library/Application
Support/Apple/Fonts/Language Support/.) In the case of Ubuntu, the set
of Noto fonts required to reach the Chrome OS / Android level of script
coverage is a bit larger than in the macOS case but should still be
manageable.

Please install, by default, those Noto fonts that provide support for
scripts that are not properly supported by the fonts that Ubuntu already
installs by default.

Like the report says: "With 17.04 install media, the screen goes black
instead of orange."

What info should I have included for this not to have been resolved as
"Incomplete"?

[Bug 1675024] [NEW] nouveau fails with orange screen with Quadro M2000 (Maxwell) in 16.04.2

2017-03-22 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
 1) Use a computer with an Nvidia Quadro M2000 GPU. (I used Lenovo ThinkStation
P710 with Lenovo-bundled Quadro M2000.)
 2) Boot from Ubuntu 16.04.2 x86_64 live desktop / install USB stick.
 3) Choose try Ubuntu before installing from the boot scroon.

Actual results:
The screen goes orange and then no visible changes take place.

Expected results:
Expected to start Unity using nouveau-provided OpenGL functionality.

Additional info:
The 16.04.1 install media results in Unity starting up, but with OpenGL
functionality (as reported by Unity and by Firefox) coming from llvmpipe on the
CPU and not from nouveau on the GPU.

With 17.04 install media, the screen goes black instead of orange.

[Bug 1612928] [NEW] ARM symbols not available on crash-stats.mozilla.com when Firefox crashes

2016-08-13 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

When Firefox crashes on Ubuntu on ARMv7, it offers to report the crash
to Mozilla, which is good, but Mozilla's crash reporting system appears
to be unable to extract symbols for a stack trace.

See e.g. https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/c6aa6dc1-90f3
-44ec-8f7f-337f72160813

I'm guessing that whatever process is used to upload symbols for
Ubuntu's x86/x86_64 builds to Mozilla's server is not being followed for
ARMv7. Please make the ARM symbols available to Mozilla for more useful
crash reporting.

[Bug 1308395] [NEW] gedit's en-US encoding menu has ISO-8859-15 by default, should have windows-1252

2014-04-16 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
 * Use a fresh en-US install of Ubuntu 14.04
 * Open a file that's not valid UTF-8 in gedit

Actual results:
gedit offers to open the file using a non-UTF-8 encoding. By default, the menu
has one non-UTF-8 item: ISO-8859-15.

Expected results:
Expected the single pre-populated item in the menu to be windows-1252 instead
of ISO-8859-15.

Additional info:
ISO-8859-15 post-dates UTF-8 and is not actually as common a legacy encoding as
ISO-8859-1 and windows-1252. windows-1252 is a superset of ISO-8859-1, so
there's no point in having ISO-8859-1 in the menu. However, if one is opening
legacy files, having windows-1252 in the menu is useful. Putting ISO-8859-15 in
the menu instead looks like anti-Microsoft political posturing that's detached
from practicality.

[Bug 206884]

2014-01-27 Thread Henri Sivonen
(In reply to Launchpad from comment #19)
André Pirard added the following comment to Launchpad bug report 206884:
How would you make the menu say this?
 Language to [auto]detect encoding for
 Language to suit [auto-detection]
 ... something like that

That's unusually wordy for a submenu label. :-(

Please note that Universal is not a language and that I still do not
 understand what that means.

The people who understood what it *really* meant can probably be counted
with the fingers of one hand. That's one of the reasons why I removed
that item from the menu.

Also, (Off) could be no encoding auto-detection to make it very clear
 what we're about.

I wouldn't be opposed to re-labeling (Off) to something like No
Detection.

[Bug 206884]

2014-01-21 Thread Henri Sivonen
Bug 805374 made both the Auto-Detect submenu and the Character Encoding
menu in general less confusing.

I think we should either consider the menu adequately non-confusing as
of Firefox 28 and mark this FIXED or concede that it's not going to
become less confusing until/unless we get rid of the menu eventually
some day: i.e. WONTFIX. (I think we have a pretty good chance of getting
rid of the remaining Russian and Ukrainian options and then coupling
Japanese autodetection with Shift_JIS fallback and getting rid of
autodetection UI.)

Trying the FIXED interpretation.

[Bug 206884]

2014-01-21 Thread Henri Sivonen
(In reply to André Pirard from comment #17)
I think that the first thing for Character Encoding Autodetect to be less
confusing is ti say what it does.
Assuming that it means that any indication of a character set is ignored ans
that it is guessed by the contents...

It means: If the type of the document is text/html or text/plain and
there is no character encoding label on the HTTP layer or inside the
document (in the text/html case) and there is no BOM at the start of the
document, assume the language of the page is the one selected from the
Auto-Detect menu and make a guess based on the contents of the file
given that language assumption.

How would you make the menu say this?

Note: My current belief is that we don't actually need the Russian and
Ukrainian autodetectors. Once the only autodetector we have is the
Japanese one, we should probably not bother the user about its existence
but couple it with choosing Japanese in Preferences: Content: Advanced:
Fallback Character Encoding [or choosing Default for Current Locale in
the Japanese localization]. Therefore, I think activity to get rid of
the Russian and Ukrainian detectors (bug 845791) would be more
productive than activity to polish the menu.

Character Encoding Autodetect is normally not needed because a page MUST
 specify the encoding it uses.

Correct.

Using it instead of reporting an error to a webmaster is causing the
webmaster to continue to make the same errors.

Indeed.

Also, picking the character code from the HTTP request is an error because
the contents of the page MUST specify the encoding, it knows better than an
 Apache server

Indeed, Ruby's Postulate generally holds. Unfortunately, HTTP disagreed and
it's too late to change that, because it would break pages that currently work
due to Ruby's Postulate not being true for them.
http://www.intertwingly.net/slides/2004/devcon/69.html

And besides, all browser now agree on the precedence of HTTP over
meta, so it's not worthwhile to break interoperability.

and the browser won't update the page when it's written to a
 file.

Firefox is supposed to if you choose the complete option in Save As...

The only case where character encoding mangling is necessary is when, for
example, displaying a text file of which the character set is specified
 nowhere

Or when displaying an HTML file whose character encoding is specified
nowhere. :-(

[Bug 1075475] [NEW] Ability to run Nuance Dragon Naturally Speaking 11.5 broke with wine 1.5.13

2012-11-06 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1) Install 32-bit Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11.5 onto wine on 32-bit Ubuntu
11.10.
2) Move the WINEPREFIX directory to 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04.
3) Install wine1.5 1.5.12-ubuntu0 from the PPA (on Ubuntu 12.04).
4) Launch Dragon with WINEARCH=win32.
5) Use it.
6) Update wine1.5 to 1.5.13-ubuntu0 from the PPA.
7) Launch Dragon with WINEARCH=win32.
8) Downgrade to wine1.5 1.5.12-ubuntu0.
9) Launch Dragon with WINEARCH=win32.
10) Update wine1.5 to 1.5.16-ubuntu0 from the PPA.
11) Launch Dragon with WINEARCH=win32.
12) Downgrade to wine1.5 1.5.12-ubuntu0.
13) Launch Dragon with WINEARCH=win32.

Actual results:
Dragon works on wine1.5 1.5.12-ubuntu0. On wine1.5 1.5.12-ubuntu0 Dragon fails.
It starts running and terminates during launch. On wine1.5 1.5.16-ubuntu0,
Dragon shows its taskbar icon with the tooltip initializing… and goes to a
seemingly infinite loop on six of the eight CPU hardware threads. Launching
Dragon again on wine1.5 1.5.16-ubuntu0 and then right clicking the taskbar icon
caused Dragon to crash with glibc complaining about a double free.

Expected results:
Expected it Dragon to continue to work on versions of wine newer than wine1.5
1.5.12-ubuntu0.

[Bug 1051559]

2012-10-16 Thread Henri Sivonen
(In reply to Ralph Giles (:rillian) from comment #18)
Perhaps we should add some infrastructure to let us blacklist particular
gstreamer elements, the way we do with plugins?

I think it’s more important to make really, really sure that the only GStreamer
things that are whitelisted are:
 * MP4 demuxer
 * H.264 decoder
 * (LC-)AAC decoder
 * MP3 decoder only in the context of .mp3 container

I’d leave Firefox agnostic to which specific implementations of these
live on the other side of GStreamer.

Maybe it was already discussed, but Mozilla was not interested in supporting
only free codecs? Why the change to support also (software that can enable
 play of) patented codecs?

[Bug 1051559]

2012-10-09 Thread Henri Sivonen
(In reply to Ralph Giles (:rillian) from comment #14)
Keep in mind that calling system gstreamer libraries means feeding data from
the network into code we have no way to issue security fixes for.

We are already on track to doing that on Android, and the Android
security update situation is worse than the security update situation on
various desktop Linux distros. As in: It’s worse to the point of not
having system updates—security or other—in most cases.

(In reply to sam tygier from comment #15)
some related discussion in the distros,
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=682917
 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=843583

I think it would be unwise for distros to turn GStreamer on before bug
760140 is fixed.

[Bug 1054927] [NEW] Autoupdater fills /boot and crashes because old kernel images are never removed

2012-09-23 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1) Install Ubuntu with the default LVM encryption recipe
2) Set Ubuntu to automatically install security updates on the background
3) Use ubuntu for 5 months

Actual results:
The system automatically installs security updates for the kernel under /boot.
It's never removes previous kernel images. After about five months, the /boot
partition created by the install recipe (i.e. sized according to the judgment
of Ubuntu developers—not me) fills up and the unattended updater crashes during
the next kernel update.

Expected results:
Expected the unattended updater to leave the nearest kernel and the previous
one on /boot and to automatically remove older kernel images. Expected the
system installer to set up /boot such that it never runs out of space when the
system updater operates automatically.

[Bug 874000] [NEW] Jagged text rendering in Panel, Menubar, Dash and Launcher tooltips

2011-10-14 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

After upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10, the text rendered in the notification
area, in the global menubar, in Dash and in the tooltips of the launcher
(i.e. in all areas that belong to Unity/Compiz instead of belonging to
an app) is rendered as if the text had been drawn anti-aliased into a
buffer and then flattened to 1-bit/pixel depth.

The result is that the text is jagged and uglier than old-school non-
anti-aliased text. See the attached screenshot.

Expected the text to be properly anti-aliased as in Ubuntu 11.04.

Are you testing IE9 parsing? Because it does not drop the rb element, and
also the rb elements are styleable.

IE9's IE9 modes cloned WebKit's old tree builder instead of implementing
the spec. Not cool. Tracking changes to the parsing spec is bug 664104.

from comment #2 must be removed in Natty, since the workaround seems to
have the opposite effect in Natty: it makes Natty unable to go to

Launcher. In contrast, the Firefox window is associated with a shiny
high-resolution icon.

Expected results:
Expected to see the same high-resolution icon for LibreOffice Calc in the the
windows switcher as in the Unity Launcher.

[Bug 782978] [NEW] Unity Launcher draws garbage after waking from hibernation

2011-05-15 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Steps to reproduce:
 1) Put the computer into hibernation.
 2) Wake the computer from hibernation.
 3) Move the mouse cursor away from the Unity Launcher
 4) Move the mouse cursor to the left edge of the screen to re-reveal Launcher

Actual results:
After waking up from hibernation, the screen region belonging to Unity Launcher
draws garbage that looks like both the RGB and alpha values were an
interpretation of non-graphical data or random uninitialized memory. When the
Launcher is hidden and re-revealed, it draws correctly.

Expected results:
Expected Unity to detect that the OpenGL graphics state has been lost during
hibernation and redraw Launcher upon wake-up.

[Bug 723083] [NEW] Shuttle SX58H7 not waking up from hibernation properly

2011-02-22 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Computer: Shuttle SX58H7
Board: Intel X58 Express
GPU: GeForce GT 210 Silent (proprietary nvidia driver)
CPU: Intel Core i7 950
AMI BIOS: 08.00.16

The computer goes to hibernate in a way that looks normal. When waking
up, USB and display don't come back and sshd doesn't respond over
network.

Hibernation used to work correctly under Karmic. Regression happened at
Lucid. Still broken on Maverick.

Why has this been assigned to xserver-xorg-video-openchrome? AFAICT,

[Bug 535046] Re: VNC connection to Mac OS X 10.6 screen sharing keeps freezing

2010-11-24 Thread Henri Sivonen
It's an known issue of OSX clipboard sharing. VNC session will be
frozen once you copy some text in your X.

Great to know what the reason is. Thank you!

Temporarily workaround is to disable clipboard, but there is no
options in vinagre.

Any chance of detecting if the VNC server is a the OSX built-in server
and disabling clipboard sharing in that case?

[Bug 677471] [NEW] Maverick regressed support for C-Media/Plantronics USB headset

2010-11-19 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

I have a USB headset whose vendor is listed as C-Media in software but the
hardware has a name Plantronics on it. lsusb shows it as:
Bus 001 Device 061: ID 0d8c:000c C-Media Electronics, Inc. Audio Adapter

Under Lucid, this device was selectable in Sound Preferences as the
input and output audio device, and the device worked.

Speakers crashes Sound Preferences and the Input and Output tabs don't
list the device.

[Bug 676959] [NEW] Vinagre appears to leak memory

2010-11-18 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vinagre

Steps to reproduce:
 1) Use vinagre to log into another computer (I logged into a Mac running the
latest Mac OS X and exporting a screen of the size 1920 by 1200).
 2) Leave the connection open for a long time.
 3) Close the connection and log in again without quitting Vinagre
 4) Go back to step 2.

Actual results:
After a couple of days, Vinagre consumes over 500 MB of RAM.

Expected results:
Expected Vinagre to operate in a roughly constant memory space of slightly
under 15 MB.

[Bug 676999] [NEW] ~/.gconf/ gets corrupted on logout

2010-11-18 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gconf

After upgrading to Maverick, ~/.gconf/ gets corrupted every time I log
out. The the symptom is that gtk shows the gtk default theme (ugly 1990s
gray) and the theme can't be changed. Also, the text anti-aliasing
setting revert to defaults. (The symptoms are the same as in bug 584731
but the trigger of the bug is different.)

If I log out, log in via ssh and replace ~/.gconf/ from a backup made
under Lucid prior to upgrading, the next graphical login works normally.
~/.gconf/ matches the backup immediately after login.

After logout, only timestamps within the XML files have changed (AFAICT
from the diff) and an item ~/.gconf/apps/update-notifier has appeared.

Attaching the diff between the backup and ~/.gconf/ after logout.

[Bug 672911] [NEW] Installing Netbook Edition alongside Desktop Edition corrupts Gnome settings (incl. Gtk theme)

2010-11-09 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

I upgraded my system from Lucid to Maverick (originally installed as
Karmic and upgraded to Lucid). The Gnome theming worked and my anti-
aliasing settings were remembered.

Then I followed the advice given in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity in
order to test Unity. That is, I ran sudo apt-get install ubuntu-netbook
and logged out, at which point my computer froze and I had to reboot it
using the power button. I then logged into the Netbook Edition side.

The window decorations looked right, but the theming within any app
window was ugly. I tried switching themes in the Appearance control
panel. The theme preview in that window worked right. However, after
selecting a theme, only the window decorations were affected and
anything drawn by the Gtk theme engine still looked like the mid 1990s-
style Gtk built-in default theme.

I logged out of Netbook Edition and into Desktop Edition. The problem
persisted. I also noticed that other Gnome settings, such as the anti-
aliasing setting had reverted to default.

I removed the Netbook Edition and Unity and then ran Computer Janitor to
get rid of the deps they had brought in. This didn't fix the problem.

Restoring .gconf, .gconfd, .gnome2 and .gnome2_private from a backup
fixed the problem.

[Bug 644956] [NEW] Apport doesn't ignore crashes from a given program when told to

2010-09-22 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

Steps to reproduce:
 1) Activate apport
 2) Run a crashy process (in my case Desktop Couch or Opera plug-in wrapper)
 3) When the process crashes, check the checkbox in the Apport dialog that
requests Apport not to show notifications of the same program again.
 4) Run the crashy process again

Actual results:
Apport keeps reporting the crashes from the perma-crashing process after being
told not to.

Expected results:
Expected Apport not to report crashes for an app that the user has excluded
from reporting by checking the don't tell me again box.

[Bug 514032] Re: usb headset: 100% volume in lucid is like 30% in karmic

I'm experiencing this problem with a Logitech headset. The headset
doesn't have a model label on it, but from the looks, it seems to be

I'm not experiencing this problem with a C-Media headset.

[Bug 599781] [NEW] X crashes when reconnecting USB devices via a KVM switch

2010-06-29 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid (64-bit).

Previously with Karmic, I have been able to disconnect and reconnect my
USB input devices (Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard and Wacom Graphire 2
tablet connected to an Apple Cinema Display connected to a Belkin KVM
switch) by using the KVM switch.

Now with Lucid, switching the USB devices back to the Ubuntu box
sometimes crashes X when the Wacom tablet is detected.

Details:
* The KVM switch identifies itself as No brand Combo Free KVM - 10d5:5000 Uni
Class Technology Co., Ltd

* The KVM switch has dedicated ports for mouse and keyboard for the
purpose of faking the continuous presence of the mouse and keyboard to
two computers. That function of the KVM switch doesn't work, so I have
instead connected my input devices to a USB hub port of the KVM switch.
Using this port is equivalent to disconnecting and reconnecting the USB
devices when the KVM switch toggles between computers.

* Typically, after reconnecting the Wacom tablet, it takes a couple of
seconds for the LED on the tablet to light up and the tablet to become
operational. This means I have a couple of seconds to see X when
switching back to the Ubuntu box and X dies when the LED on the tablet
lights up.

* Once X dies, I see the kind of text briefly that one would sometimes
see when shutting down a Ubuntu Live system. Then I'm taken back to the
login screen.

* If I switch back and forth quickly in order to provoke the problem, it
doesn't happen. It seems to happen when the USB devices have been
disconnected at least a couple of minutes before reconnecting.

* If I press keys on the keyboard and/or try to tap the tablet with the
tip of the stylus after connecting the devices but before the LED on the
wacom tablet lights up, the crash is more probable.

[Bug 582778] Re: RFE: Support cloning an existing Ubuntu installation onto another disk in a bootable form

2010-06-17 Thread Henri Sivonen
Sorry about the slow response.

I haven't tried Remastersys. According to documentation, it creates a
bootable DVD. I don't have an optical drive, and I'm not seeking to
create a read-only DVD. I am also not seeking to create a DVD master and
image it onto an USB device with an abnormal filesystem setup. I'm
seeking to create a fully operational clone with a normal (ext4)
filesystem and swap on a read/write USB disk.

As for redirecting my request to Brainstorm, I am under the impression
that Brainstorm is a place where enhancement requests go to die. I
really have no interest in using my time to file Brainstorm items
without evidence of Brainstorms actually having an effect on Ubuntu
releases. See http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/06/many-hands-make-light-
work-few-make-it.html

[Bug 535046] Re: VNC connection to Mac OS X 10.6 screen sharing keeps freezing

2010-06-16 Thread Henri Sivonen
Still a problem with Lucid. Even if this is actually a bug in Apple's
VNC server, it would still be worthwhile to provide a workaround, if
this can be worked around e.g. by sending extra activity to the server.

[Bug 582778] [NEW] RFE: Support cloning an existing Ubuntu installation onto another disk in a bootable form

2010-05-19 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

In order to be able to make backups that can be taken to use without a
time-consuming restore step, it would be useful to have a tool for
cloning an existing Ubuntu installation onto another disk (USB or
(S)ATA). On Mac, I use SuperDuper! for this, but I haven't found a
similar tool for Ubuntu.

That is, I suggest making it possible to use a partition with a bootable
Ubuntu installation as the source (not just an .iso) and letting the
target be another ext4 partition on another disk. The cloning process
should copy all files, directories and file system attributes and should
update UUIDs in relevant places (by default to point to swap on the same
physical disk as the target partition) and install a suitable configured
copy of GRUB2 onto the target disk.

It seems to me that the Startup Disk Creator is would be the most
natural place for functionality like this.

** Affects: usb-creator (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 570550] [NEW] Can't make Wacom button emit double-click when compiz enabled

2010-04-27 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wacom-tools

Steps to reproduce (on Karmic x86_64):
 1) Plug the USB model of Wacom Graphire2 into the computer.
 2) In System: Preferences: Visual Effects, select Normal to start compiz
 3) Install the wacom-tools package.
 4) In terminal, run the command: xsetwacom set 'Wacom Graphire2 4x5' Button2
'DBLCLICK 0'
 5) Open System: Preferences: Mouse
 6) Move the Wacom stylus so that the cursor is over the light bulb with the
tip of the stylus a millimeter away from the tablet surface.
 7) Press the lower end of the double-ended button on the stylus without
letting the tip of the stylus touch the tablet surface (to avoid registering a
tip-push click).
 8) Release the button.

Actual results:
The light bulb becomes brighter until the button is released but there's no
halo around the light bulb. (I.e. the button worked like the left mouse button
works normally.)

Expected results:
Expected the light bulb to light up bright with a halo around it and expected
it to stay lit for a while after the button has been released. (I.e. the button
emitted a synthetic double-click when the button was pressed down.)

Additional information:
If at step #2 you choose None to use metacity instead, the expected results
happen.

[Bug 568910] [NEW] Icon for erasing a device looks disabled when it is enabled

2010-04-23 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility

Release: Karmic x86_64

Steps to reproduce:
 1) Connect a USB disk
 2) Open Palimpsest Disk Utility
 3) Click the icon of the USB disk device on the left
 4) Look at the rightmost button in the toolbar (tooltip: Erase the contents
of the device)
 5) Try to click the rightmost icon in the toolbar

Actual results:
The icon of the rightmost button looks disabled. However, the button is
clickable. (Clicking it brings up a confirmation dialog asking if you really
want to erase the device.)

Expected results:
Expected the icon to have darker colors so that it wouldn't look disabled.

[Bug 446943] Re: Tablet stylus right-click not recognized

2010-04-21 Thread Henri Sivonen
I reported the problem that comment 13 is about.

The problem I'm seeing is not a duplicate of this bug. If I replace
/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/10-linuxwacom.fdi with the file
attached to this bug, the change has no effect. I figured that this is
because the change to the config file was made for serial devices only
and I have a USB tablet. I moved the line merge
key=input.x11_options.Button2 type=string3/merge to the earlier
group that isn't restricted to serial devices. This had the effect of
mapping the lower button on my Graphire2 stylus to the right mouse
button.

However, using DBLCLICK 0 instead of 3 had no effect at all. It
didn't even degenerate to left single click. The button stayed as the
middle mouse button.

The problem I'm seeing goes away if I use metacity instead of compiz.

[Bug 556442] [NEW] Nautilus doesn't automatically remount a network share when a clicking a symlink pointing to the share via .gvfs

2010-04-06 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Karmic on x86_64.

Steps to reproduce:
 1) Mount a samba share using Connect to Server... in the Places menu.
 2) Tell the system to remember the credentials for the share.
 3) Make a symlink from the home directory to a directory on the samba share so
that the symlink points to ~/.gvfs/sharename on host/directory
 4) Shut down the computer but not the samba server.
 5) Reboot.
 6) Double-click the symlink in Nautilus.

Expected results:
Expected Nautilus to use the share name and host baked into the ~/.gvfs path
and the credentials saved to the keyring to remount the share and then open the
directory pointed to by the symlink.

Actual results:
The symlink is treated as broken.

Additional information:
This is a feature parity bug compared to Mac OS X. Finder on Mac OS X remounts
an AFP share automatically when the user tries to open an alias that points to
a folder on an AFP share that isn't mounted currently.

[Bug 539591] [NEW] ALSA audio output with Wine doesn't have stable time sync

2010-03-16 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine1.2

Using Karmic 64-bit.

Steps to reproduce:
 1) Install wine1.2 (the wine package is even worse)
 2) Configure wine to use ALSA audio.
 3) Install the Windows version of Spotify. http://www.spotify.com/
 4) Play audio in Spotify.
 5) Try with wine hardware acceleration set to emulation and to full.

Actual results:
With hardware acceleration set to emulation, putting mild load (like Eclipse
indexing stuff) on the computer can confuse audio. With hardware acceleration
set to full, the music jumps a bit from time to time.

Expected results:
Expected the audio not to jump.

Additional info:
OSS isn't jumpy but configuring Wine to use OSS blocks audio from Firefox
(HTML5 video) and Flash Player (in Firefox).

[Bug 535046] [NEW] VNC connection to Mac OS X 10.6 screen sharing keeps freezing

2010-03-09 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vinagre

Reproducible: Always.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Have a computer running Karmic and another running Snow Leopard (I used
10.6.2) on the same LAN.
2) Enable screen sharing on the Mac.
3) Open Remote Desktop Viewer on Karmic.
4) Connect to the Mac.
5) Leave the VNC idle on the background for 10 minutes or so.
6) Come back to the VNC window and try to interact with the Mac GUI using the
mouse.

Actual results:
The VNC state has frozen. The VNC screen doesn't update and the remote machine
doesn't get keyboard or mouse events. However, there's no dialog about VNC
disconnecting (as would be the case if you shut down the Mac).

Expected results:
Expected the VNC connection to stay operational indefinitely unless explicitly
closed.

[Bug 499376] [NEW] Qt theme should follow the GTK+ theme by default when Gnome enabled

2009-12-22 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Version: Karmic

Steps to reproduce:
 1) Install Kmail, Skype and Google Earth.
 2) Run each one.

Actual results:
Kmail, Skype and Google Earth have GUI widgets whose appearance differs from
the widgets in the GTK+ apps that were installed by default.

Expected results:
When the user has installed Ubuntu (not Kubuntu), expected the Qt theme to look
the same as the GTK+ theme *automatically* and *by default*.

[Bug 499381] [NEW] Multiple prompts to install language packs that weren't on the CD

2009-12-22 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Version: Karmic.

Steps to reproduce:
 1) Disconnect the computer from the network.
 2) Start a Karmic installation from the CD.
 3) Choose Finnish as the main language.
 4) Accept all other install options as the defaults.
 5) After installation, reboot.
 6) Observation point #1.
 7) Shut down the computer.
 8) Connect the computer to an Ethernet network that routes to the Internet.
 9) Boot.
10) Observation point #2.
11) Install all automatic updates.
12) Reboot.
13) Observation point #3.
14) Go to the language selector menu and set all languages to Finnish.
15) Reboot.
15) Create another admin user.
16) Log out.
17) Log in using the newly-created account.
18) Observation point #4.
19) Accept all language file installations that are prompted.
20) Log out.
21) Log in as the user whose account was created during the installation.
22) Observation point #5.

Actual results:
At observation point #1, the system alerts that due to the lack of a network
connection the language files for the selected language weren't installed and
they can either be installed by pushing a button on the dialog or later by
going to such and such menu. Once the computer is rebooted connected to the
network at observation point #2, the prompt does not automatically reappear.
Going to the indicated menu at observation point #3 does not cause the files to
be installed when switching the language from English to Finnish. Logging in as
a newly-created user, the language file prompt appears twice at the same time.
At observation point #5, the same prompt appears again to the original user
even though the other admin user already installed the files twice.

Expected results:
Expected the system to prompt to install the language files at the first
opportunity when the network is connected and the logged-in user is an admin
user. Expected the prompt to appear as only one instance at a time. Expected
not to have to manually re-choose Finnish. Expected the language pack
installation to take effect for all users and the other users not to be
reprompted.

[Bug 84691] User expected to click an icon outside the notifier balloon

2007-02-12 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-notifier

Release: Dapper

Steps to reproduce:
1) Turn on automatic updates.
2) Wait for updates to become available.

Actual results:
A balloon pops up above the Panel (assuming that the Panel is at the bottom of
the screen). The balloon says in its main text that updates are available
(which is fine). The supplementary text tells the user to click the notifier
icon (I am not sure what the English terminology is. I used the Finnish
localization). The only thing in the balloon that can be construed to be an
icon or a button is the [X] button at top right. A non-expert user (not me but
a person whose Ubuntu use I support) locates the only button and clicks it.
(This happens every time until I explain how the balloon works. The designer of
the balloon wanted to user to click the updater icon in the Panel outside the
balloon.) Updates don't get installed and the system stays less secure.

Expected results:
Expected the balloon to state in its main text that updates are available. The
balloon should not need supplementary text and should not have an [X] button at
all. Instead, below the main text the balloon should have two buttons (looking
like dialog buttons but adapted to the balloon color) with the labels Later
and Install.

Additional information:
As precedent, balloons shown by the Microsoft Office Assistant have dialog-like
buttons inside the balloon.
