[Bug 1448558] [NEW] lightdm crashes with systemd
Public bug reported: system: hardware: BTO laptop CPU: Intel Core i7-3630qm @ 2,4 GHz x 8 RAM: 7,7 GiB GPU 1: intel ivybridge Mobile GPU 2: discrete NVIDIA card, optirun and nouveau installed. OS: Ubuntu 15.04 64-bit what i expected to happen: After upgrade to 15.04, I restarted as per request. i expected the login screen to appear, and after entering my password, the Unity Desktop to load as it always did in 14.04 and 14.10. What actually happens: - plymouth (i have a custom theme with a loading bar) zips by real fast! - in between Plymouth and Lightdm, a message appears, but time is too short for me to read. - then Lightdm appears to load, but freezes up at varying points. -the mouse pointer appears, but disappears. -all input is lost! keyboard and mouse not responding -any notifications about networking or other on screen at the moment of freeze are frozen along with it. -lightdm screen elements load or don't at varying rates, sometimes a wallpaper, sometimes not. same with password box, dotted pattern, logo etc. - no VT's available - judging by HD activity LED, linux is still running somewhere in there. i have to reboot using REISUB this started happening after the upgrade. I suspect is has to do with either: - systemd, - the latest linux kernel, - GPU switching (laptop boots with NVIDIA card on, switches to Intel when lightdm loads) Current workaround: installed sddm (KDE's display manager i believe) and let it handle login instead of lightdm. it has no issues. i tried starting from grub in Upstart mode, and with older kernels, and resuls vary. i was able to log in using lightdm succesfully more often at least. i submitted this bug using "ubuntu-bug lightdm" ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.04 Package: lightdm 1.14.0-0ubuntu2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.19.0-15.15-generic 3.19.3 Uname: Linux 3.19.0-15-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.17.2-0ubuntu1 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: Unity Date: Sat Apr 25 23:53:02 2015 ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= LANG=nl_NL.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: lightdm UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: lightdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug third-party-packages vivid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1448558 Title: lightdm crashes with systemd To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1448558/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I can confirm that the workaround on #16 works. apparently, Facebook has changed the protocol. they might do it again in the future maybe the code needs to be changed to either not care (which might not be safe?) or check the protocol before fetching messages? no idea how that works, just spouting ideas... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1088775 Title: gwibber does not refresh Facebook feeds To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gwibber/+bug/1088775/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 814833] Re: Opening the dash is very slow and laggy
Hi Mauricio, If you have the Dash in non-maximized mode, it could save some CPU, and it would allow you to click away from the dash. using no-blur helps a bit, but for me it seems to copy the wrong piece of desktop for the dash background, so it just looks odd. like i wrote above, somehow if there is a maximized window below the dash, the dash becomes VERY slow and sometimes won't even close. -the trick for now is to keep all windows unmaximized when you use the Dash. also if you have trouble closing the dash, or the HUD: it likely did get the 'close' command, but the rendering stalls. - switching to a VT, wait a bit and witching back ( CTRL+ALT+F4, wait, CTRL+ALT+F7) it gives unity the time to render 'off-screen', and chances are the Dash caught up with the close command. unfortunately this bug doesn't seem to be a priority, as no one has even been assigned to it since it was confirmd about half a year ago... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/814833 Title: Opening the dash is very slow and laggy To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/814833/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 814833] Re: Opening the dash is very slow and laggy
i've narrowed it down to this: - when i have no window, or a non-maximized window open (any app): opening the Dash or Hud works slow and choppy, but it works. they close, and the Launcher comes back too. - when I have a maximized window open (any app): opening the Dash or Hud takes several seconds, they don't respond to typing and they won't close, or take incredibly long. when they do manage to close, the Launcher will not come back... unless: when it all gets stuck, i switch to a terminal using CTRL+ALT+[F1 to 6] wait a second and switch back with CTRL+ALT+F7, Unity has caught up to where it should be. Conclusion: I think it has something to do with rendering unity while a window is maximized. I have no clue why it matters to have a window maximized or not.

I've done a clean wipe and install, updated, and problem still exists. The dash opens late, populates after 20 seconds, has a type lag of 2 seconds per letter, and it's impossible to close the dash. CPU rises to 100% of which 99% allocated to compiz, and it stays there. the system is unusable and needs to be cut off by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, switching to terminal and typing sudo killall -u or even the occasional Ctrl+Alt+SysRq, REISUB. i tried compiz --replace but i got an error saying a compositor is already active and am left without a window manager. i made some screenshots with a terminal running top, before and after opening dash. ** Attachment added: "before opening dash" https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/814833/+attachment/3416509/+files/Schermafdruk%20van%202012-10-28%2018%3A09%3A56.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/814833 Title: Opening the dash is very slow and laggy To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/814833/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

i'm no expert, but i think the dash is slower than gnome-shell because: 1) it seems the dash acts like a separate program that needs to start everytime. - Gnome-shell seems to be fully loaded in the background. 2) the dynamic content. everytime the dash opens, it needs to connect to the database and retrieve the items. it does so right from the start. when you start typing, with each letter, a new search is started to try and match. - Gnome Shell starts with a fixed list, and only searches when you type. 3) there's less animation involved. gnome-shell doesn't have previews, let alone the split-and-zoom effect. also the windows aren't displayed behind the overview, so no blur is needed, just a dark overlay. also scrolling the menu is less smooth than in unity dash. i like the idea behind unity more than gnome-shell, but right now, i'm almost scared to open the dash. i found myself looking for an app in the launcher, notice it's not there, open a terminal instead and start the app from command line. i'm willing to lose eyecandy if it makes the dash work again.

I'm affected too. 1) I'm using Libreoffice, then for whatever reason it turns grey and my disk is writing like nuts. i kill libreoffice, destroying my document. the disk writing stops. 2) i restart libreoffice writer, recover what's left of my document and save it for good measure 3) i get a i/o error, stating i can't save the file. 4) puzzled, i free up more disk space to 1 GB free, and save my file. 5) back to 1). again libreoffice freezes, and 1GB of diskspace eaten in seconds! i check my home folder and indeed find two files: .xsession-errors 992.7 MB .xsession-errors.old 611.0 MB .xsession-errors is filled with the following line over and over: (soffice:2993): LIBDBUSMENU-GLIB-CRITICAL **: dbusmenu_menuitem_property_set_variant: assertion `DBUSMENU_IS_MENUITEM(mi)' failed which tells me something doesnt sit well with dbus and menu items... lo-menubar? anyways, such errors shouldn't be able to do fill up a disk in seconds! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1000775 Title: [12.04] [ Precise] .xsession-errors getting spammed filling up the disk. [Bug 994203] [NEW] Xorg freeze
Public bug reported: i'm experiencing random freezes. the system freezes at seemingly random points and leaves me with only a cursor. i can reboot through CTRL+ALT+SysRq REISUB, and it does close open programs properly, though unsaved data is lost. it happened while -using firefox with 5 tabs open, but otherwise idle; -using Firefox, scrolling down a long webpage. the scrolling seemed to overflow and firefox greyed out, then system freeze; -using LibreOffice, 1 document open, editing a textbox, specifically clicking away from the textbox. i did play some youtube videos both full screen and in a tab, but didn't notice performance issues. didn't invoke a freeze. well, that's nice. rendered invalid on some sort of technicality?! :-/ my system is very much up to date, compiz still craps out on me, no new crash alert pops up, so i can't file a new bug. i tried purging compiz and unity and reinstalling them but it stays broken. is there anyone out there that can tell me what to do to get the right info up here, and compiz fixed? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/981907 Title: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/981907/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 981737] [NEW] compiz segfaults at initiation
Public bug reported: after friday's update, Compiz is having a major segfault, rendering the desktop session useless. (always handy keeping gnome-classic-no effects around ;-) ) i'll attach the terminal output of "compiz --replace" i tested it with both the "unity" and the "standard" profile, result is the same, so i don't think it's Unity's fault.
