[Bug 1581070] [NEW] Data connection drops after x time

2016-05-12 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Public bug reported:

Device: Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition (ARALE-MEIZU)
OS: Ubuntu 15.04 (r323)
Ubuntu Image 20160512 armhf (20160512-020304)
Device Image 20160331-e14fc2
Adaptation Image 20160504-975-19-6

(above Image descriptions may be wrong, i'm working from Dutch Locale)

problem exists since estimated sunday, May 8 2016

expected behavior:
- Data connection remains up until manually specified otherwise
- when connection is lost due to external causes (such as bad signal), data
connection is automatically restored when available
- same for Wifi.

encoutered behavior:
- after x amount of time (x varies between 1 and 4 hours so far) data and wifi
connection is lost, and neither data or wifi will reconnect until I manually
switch to flight-mode and back.
- may also affect SIM status

I am willing to supply log files or enter terminal commands, but need to

Can anyone say when this will be implemented and released?

Can anyone say whether there is any effort to fix GPS on nexus devices out
there?
if not, please just mark this bug as WONTFIX so i can stop hoping.

[Bug 1448558] [NEW] lightdm crashes with systemd

2015-04-25 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Public bug reported:

system:
hardware: BTO laptop
CPU: Intel Core i7-3630qm @ 2,4 GHz x 8
RAM: 7,7 GiB
GPU 1: intel ivybridge Mobile
GPU 2: discrete NVIDIA card, optirun and nouveau installed.
OS: Ubuntu 15.04 64-bit

what i expected to happen:

After upgrade to 15.04, I restarted as per request. i expected the login
screen to appear, and after entering my password, the Unity Desktop to
load as it always did in 14.04 and 14.10.

What actually happens:

- plymouth (i have a custom theme with a loading bar) zips by real fast!
- in between Plymouth and Lightdm, a message appears, but time is too short for
me to read.
- then Lightdm appears to load, but freezes up at varying points.
-the mouse pointer appears, but disappears.
-all input is lost! keyboard and mouse not responding
-any notifications about networking or other on screen at the moment of freeze
are frozen along with it.
-lightdm screen elements load or don't at varying rates, sometimes a wallpaper,
sometimes not. same with password box, dotted pattern, logo etc.
- no VT's available
- judging by HD activity LED, linux is still running somewhere in there.

i have to reboot using REISUB

this started happening after the upgrade.
I suspect is has to do with either:
- systemd,
- the latest linux kernel,
- GPU switching (laptop boots with NVIDIA card on, switches to Intel when
lightdm loads)

Current workaround:
installed sddm (KDE's display manager i believe) and let it handle login
instead of lightdm. it has no issues.

i tried starting from grub in Upstart mode, and with older kernels, and
resuls vary. i was able to log in using lightdm succesfully more often
at least.

i submitted this bug using "ubuntu-bug lightdm"

[Bug 1265192] Re: Install/reinstall wipes out all/other partitions

would it be difficult to read out someones existing fstab, determine

info to reinstall as expected and not touch anything else?

[Bug 1090761] Re: no visual, lightdm and desktop do load

2014-01-04 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Christopher,

Since then i have done a clean install of newer ubuntu version and
different drivers. I'm currently running 13.10 with nouveau drivers and
bumblebee, on the same hardware.

I'm currently not experiencing any problems related to this bug.

Since this is my workstation, I can't go and install a development release.
I could see if I can install the nvidia blob in 13.10?

Let me know if that's worth anything to you.

Hugo.

i've been having this bug at every single boot since I don't know when.

well, that just sucks. apport-bug collects the info, gets me to this
page for me to subscribe, and then attaches nothing.

apport-collect tells me this bug is not mine and i should file a new bug
with apport-bug and then mark it duplicate to this one :-|

should i make that duplicate bug, or is there any other sensible way of
adding info to this bug?

[Bug 1107215] [NEW] compiz lockup when installing with software-center

2013-01-27 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Public bug reported:

when using software center to install an app, the screen locks up, but
the system responds to mouse and keyboard input.

scenario1
1 open dash>applications lens
2 right-click a not-installed app to open preview
3 click the downlaod button
4 type password, press enter

result
5 password dialogue doesn't close, but flickers.
6 screen is frozen nothing responds to mouse hover.
7 i can press ALT+F2 and type 'xkill' and press ENTER blindly. the cursor
changes to an x
8 i click unity panel, and compiz restarts.
9 the app has or has not been installed. ymmv

scenario2
1 start Software-center
2 choose app and click install
3 type password and press enter
4 software center installs the app, but freezes at the end.
5 the process icon flickers, and the screen locks up like above.

in both cases only killing compiz unfreezes the desktop.

[Bug 1088775] Re: gwibber does not refresh Facebook feeds

2013-01-12 Thread Hugo Venhorst
I can confirm that the workaround on #16 works.

apparently, Facebook has changed the protocol. they might do it again in the
future
maybe the code needs to be changed to either not care (which might not be
safe?) or check the protocol before fetching messages?

no idea how that works, just spouting ideas...

[Bug 1090761] [NEW] no visual, lightdm and desktop do load

2012-12-15 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Public bug reported:

when starting ubuntu, plymouth briefly shows, then i get a black screen
with a blinking cursor.

strange thing is, i do have a mouse pointer, and lightdm did load. i can
type my username and password blind, and judging by HD activity it does
load the desktop.

still no visual, just a mouse pointer.

i go to the top right, click, and use the arrow keys to go up once,
press enter, and then space. Ubuntu shuts down normally.

a second boot goes through fine.

i thought it might be a grub setting, but can't find anything that does or

[Bug 814833] Re: Opening the dash is very slow and laggy

2012-11-24 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Hi Mauricio,

If you have the Dash in non-maximized mode, it could save some CPU, and it
would allow you to click away from the dash.
using no-blur helps a bit, but for me it seems to copy the wrong piece of
desktop for the dash background, so it just looks odd.

like i wrote above, somehow if there is a maximized window below the dash, the
dash becomes VERY slow and sometimes won't even close.
-the trick for now is to keep all windows unmaximized when you use the Dash.

also if you have trouble closing the dash, or the HUD: it likely did get the
'close' command, but the rendering stalls.
- switching to a VT, wait a bit and witching back ( CTRL+ALT+F4, wait,
CTRL+ALT+F7) it gives unity the time to render 'off-screen', and chances are
the Dash caught up with the close command.

unfortunately this bug doesn't seem to be a priority, as no one has even
been assigned to it since it was confirmd about half a year ago...

[Bug 814833] Re: Opening the dash is very slow and laggy

2012-11-17 Thread Hugo Venhorst
i've narrowed it down to this:

- when i have no window, or a non-maximized window open (any app):
opening the Dash or Hud works slow and choppy, but it works. they close, and
the Launcher comes back too.

- when I have a maximized window open (any app):
opening the Dash or Hud takes several seconds, they don't respond to typing and
they won't close, or take incredibly long. when they do manage to close, the
Launcher will not come back...

unless:
when it all gets stuck, i switch to a terminal using CTRL+ALT+[F1 to 6] wait a
second and switch back with CTRL+ALT+F7, Unity has caught up to where it should
be.

Conclusion: I think it has something to do with rendering unity while a
window is maximized.

I have no clue why it matters to have a window maximized or not.

[Bug 1075286] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon crashed with sigabrt in raise()

2012-11-05 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Public bug reported:

what i was doing:
- I was watching a fullscreen youtube video (length of the video was about an
hour, and I was halfway through)

What happened:
- the video stalled but remained fullscreen. ESC didn't work, ALT+TAB did bring
Unity to the front, and showed the window switcher. the window switcher
responded normally, and the selected window was supposedly focused, but the
video stayed in front and fullscreen.
- HDD read/write went nuts.

what i did next:
- i went to VT2, logged in and ran Top. it revealed gnome-settings-daemon to be
taking 80% CPU (the other 20% was devided between Xorg, Thunderbird Firefox and
other)
- i tried going back to VT7, but the graphics was messed up. CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE
didn't work. back to VT2 worked.
- i tried to kill gnome-settings-daemon. no go.
- i did sudo killall -u which effectively logged me out.
- I logged back in. upon log-in i got a crash report. it didn't open Launchpad.
- I did ubuntu-bug gnome-settings-daemon and reported manually.

- i restarted the video and watched the remaining half fullscreen
without trouble. i have no idea about reproducing this.

[Bug 814833] Re: Opening the dash is very slow and laggy

2012-10-28 Thread Hugo Venhorst
here's the screenshot of the mess after opening dash.

is there anything i can do -a log to post, a command to run, anything?-
to shed some sort of light to this?

i really don't believe only 34 people have this problem. this way ubuntu is
unusable.
I really do want unity to be all that it can't be, and am not just running off
to xfce or gnome-shell (which _flies_ on my machine).

[Bug 814833] Re: Opening the dash is very slow and laggy

2012-10-28 Thread Hugo Venhorst
I've done a clean wipe and install, updated, and problem still exists.

The dash opens late, populates after 20 seconds, has a type lag of 2 seconds
per letter, and it's impossible to close the dash.
CPU rises to 100% of which 99% allocated to compiz, and it stays there. the
system is unusable and needs to be cut off by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace,
switching to terminal and typing sudo killall -u or even the occasional
Ctrl+Alt+SysRq, REISUB.

i tried compiz --replace but i got an error saying a compositor is
already active and am left without a window manager.

i made some screenshots with a terminal running top, before and after
opening dash.

[Bug 1069146] Re: notify-osd wrong style

2012-10-25 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Installing lubuntu-desktop draws in xfce4-notifyd, which overrides
notify-osd in lightdm and in unity session.

Removing xfce4-notifyd fixes that in unity session, but now lubuntu uses
notify-osd as well.

Could they exist side by side, with clear definitions which session uses
which?

Either this bug isn't fixed or the other bug displays strikingly similar

i just opened the dash, and closed it again. the closing took forever,
and the launcher and top bar didn't come back.

a terminal running top, showed compiz racing to 100% cpu and staying
there.

here's the thing: when switching to vt2 and back to vt7, unity was
suddenly fine, and i saw compiz sinking down to about 10% cpu

is there any info or log file i can submit?

I Have to agree with Daniels comment at #4. the dash comes up fast
enough with active blur, but population of the Dash makes it unusably
slow to the point of me losing patience and killing the x session to get
unstuck.

i do have the proposed repos active, and nux 3.10.0-0ubuntu1 installed

[Bug 814833] Re: Opening the dash is very slow and laggy

2012-10-22 Thread Hugo Venhorst
i'm no expert, but i think the dash is slower than gnome-shell because:
1) it seems the dash acts like a separate program that needs to start
everytime. - Gnome-shell seems to be fully loaded in the background.
2) the dynamic content. everytime the dash opens, it needs to connect to the
database and retrieve the items. it does so right from the start. when you
start typing, with each letter, a new search is started to try and match. -
Gnome Shell starts with a fixed list, and only searches when you type.
3) there's less animation involved. gnome-shell doesn't have previews, let
alone the split-and-zoom effect. also the windows aren't displayed behind the
overview, so no blur is needed, just a dark overlay. also scrolling the menu is
less smooth than in unity dash.

i like the idea behind unity more than gnome-shell, but right now, i'm
almost scared to open the dash. i found myself looking for an app in the
launcher, notice it's not there, open a terminal instead and start the
app from command line.

i'm willing to lose eyecandy if it makes the dash work again.

Removing that package fixes it, thanks!

I did have gnome fallback and lubuntu-desktop installed from before the
upgrade (don't know which brings in xfce4-notifyd?), and it wasn't a
problem. I think the upgrade screwed that up.

[Bug 1000775] Re: [12.04] [ Precise] .xsession-errors getting spammed filling up the disk.

2012-10-14 Thread Hugo Venhorst
I'm affected too.

1) I'm using Libreoffice, then for whatever reason it turns grey and my
disk is writing like nuts. i kill libreoffice, destroying my document.
the disk writing stops.

2) i restart libreoffice writer, recover what's left of my document and
save it for good measure

3) i get a i/o error, stating i can't save the file.

4) puzzled, i free up more disk space to 1 GB free, and save my file.

5) back to 1). again libreoffice freezes, and 1GB of diskspace eaten in
seconds!

i check my home folder and indeed find two files:

.xsession-errors 992.7 MB
.xsession-errors.old 611.0 MB

.xsession-errors is filled with the following line over and over:

(soffice:2993): LIBDBUSMENU-GLIB-CRITICAL **:
dbusmenu_menuitem_property_set_variant: assertion
`DBUSMENU_IS_MENUITEM(mi)' failed

which tells me something doesnt sit well with dbus and menu items... lo-menubar?
anyways, such errors shouldn't be able to do fill up a disk in seconds!

[Bug 1059226] [NEW] Unity has trouble focussing when desktop isn't drawn

2012-09-30 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Public bug reported:

-
system info:

1) Description: Ubuntu quantal (development branch)
Release:12.10

2) unity:
  Geïnstalleerd: 6.6.0-0ubuntu1
  Kandidaat: 6.6.0-0ubuntu1
  Versietabel:
 *** 6.6.0-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) expected behavior: when not drawing a desktop, and not focussing a
window, unity should focus on itself to keep keyboard input

4) what happened instead:

( Some while ago i noticed nautilus wasn't drawing the desktop anymore, despite
show_desktop being enabled in gconf and dconf.
After some google-fu i found out the package ubuntu-settings wasn't installed.
I installed ubuntu-settings, which fixed that issue. )

During ths, i noticed something else:

When nothing is drawing the desktop (besides compiz itself), Unity doesn't know
what to focus.
- Unity tries to switch to the next window.
- If that window is minimized, the system becomes really unresponsive.
You can see a flashing of the right-side triangle on the launcher that
indicates a focused window, like Unity is trying to focus, but fails.
The global menu is that of the minimized window.
- When no window is focused, Unity does not respond to keyboard input

Does it need to be Nautilus, or does any desktop drawing program
suffice?

I think it should be possible to not have nautilus or other program draw a
desktop.
--

--
how to repeat issue:

1) uncheck nautilus show_desktop in dconf/gconf, or:
1a) uninstall nautilus
2) log out and back in

# notice that when no window is focused, Unity does not respond to any
keyboard input. one click on panel/launcher to focus Unity, or open
Dash/launch program via mouse.

3) lauch a program, and minimize it
4) watch unity squirm.

off by default + notification of features and available settings +

maybe a dialog box during install with an explanation and an initial

...Thank you for installing. do you want the lens set to active now?
[yes] [no]

this can be changed in the System Settings dialog under Privacy

[Bug 994203] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2012-05-03 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Public bug reported:

i'm experiencing random freezes.
the system freezes at seemingly random points and leaves me with only a cursor.
i can reboot through CTRL+ALT+SysRq REISUB, and it does close open programs
properly, though unsaved data is lost.

it happened while
-using firefox with 5 tabs open, but otherwise idle;
-using Firefox, scrolling down a long webpage. the scrolling seemed to overflow
and firefox greyed out, then system freeze;
-using LibreOffice, 1 document open, editing a textbox, specifically clicking
away from the textbox.

i did play some youtube videos both full screen and in a tab, but didn't
notice performance issues. didn't invoke a freeze.

OS: ubuntu 12.04 64 bit
kernel: 3.2.0.24 generic
Gnome 3.4.1
Device: Acer 9300 laptop
RAM: 1.7 GiB
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53 × 2
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100
Graphics driver: Nouveau

I'm on Nouveau because of the NVIDIA security patch debacle (bug 982485)

the system freezes at seemingly random points and leaves me with only a cursor.
i can reboot through CTRL+ALT+SysRq REISUB, and it does close open programs
properly, though unsaved data is lost.

i am at a loss what commands to type to get more info but am willing to
help

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently

2012-05-03 Thread Hugo Venhorst
i'm experiencing random freezes too.

OS: ubuntu 12.04 64 bit
kernel: 3.2.0.24 generic
Gnome 3.4.1
Device: Acer 9300 laptop
RAM: 1.7 GiB
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53 × 2
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100
Graphics driver: Nouveau

I'm on Nouveau because of the NVIDIA security patch debacle (bug 982485)

the system freezes at seemingly random points and leaves me with only a cursor.
i can reboot through CTRL+ALT+SysRq REISUB, and it does close open programs
properly, though unsaved data is lost.

i am at a loss what commands to type to get log results etc.

[Bug 981907] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV

2012-04-15 Thread Hugo Venhorst
well, that's nice. rendered invalid on some sort of technicality?! :-/

my system is very much up to date, compiz still craps out on me, no new crash
alert pops up, so i can't file a new bug.
i tried purging compiz and unity and reinstalling them but it stays broken.

is there anyone out there that can tell me what to do to get the right
info up here, and compiz fixed?

[Bug 981737] Re: compiz segfaults at initiation

2012-04-14 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Last night the system picked up on the crash and made an automated bug
report. Good chance it has some useful information. See bug #981907

[Bug 981737] [NEW] compiz segfaults at initiation

2012-04-14 Thread Hugo Venhorst
Public bug reported:

after friday's update, Compiz is having a major segfault, rendering the desktop
session useless.
(always handy keeping gnome-classic-no effects around ;-) )

i'll attach the terminal output of "compiz --replace"

i tested it with both the "unity" and the "standard" profile, result is
the same, so i don't think it's Unity's fault.

Release 12.04 (precise) 64-bit
Kernel Linux 3.2.0-23-generic
GNOME 3.4.0
device: Acer-9300
RAM: 1,7 GiB
