[Bug 1430230] Re: Log flooding with warning message when using linux-lowlatency kernel

2015-03-30 Thread James Brierley
This is a kernel bug, rather than anything else. See
http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=6c51d46f135b00c00373fcd029786ccef2b02b5b

A workaround is to boot with ‘nothreadirqs’ in the kernel command line.

[Bug 1430230] Re: Log flooding with warning message when using linux-lowlatency kernel

2015-03-30 Thread James Brierley
Yes, it isn’t ideal and sort of defeats the ‘low latency’ object, but
it’s better than having your SSD thwacked (one of these writes to the
log per second also adds up in terms of CPU activity).

As the patch is just a one-liner, which allows execution in both soft
and hard interrupt contexts instead of hard only, and has been tested
and pushed upstream
(http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.video.dri.devel/122993) I’d hope
the kernel devs will be able to merge this in in time for Vivid.

[Bug 192502] Re: bluetooth audio skips, cuts out

2013-12-16 Thread James Brierley
I got rid of this problem by disabling un-needed options in
/etc/bluetooth/audio.conf. Here’s my file:

# Configuration file for the audio service

# This section contains options which are not specific to any
# particular interface
[General]

# Switch to master role for incoming connections (defaults to true)
Master=false

# If we want to disable support for specific services
# Defaults to supporting all implemented services
#Disable=Gateway,Source,Socket

# SCO routing. Either PCM or HCI (in which case audio is routed to/from ALSA)
# Defaults to HCI
#SCORouting=PCM

# Automatically connect both A2DP and HFP/HSP profiles for incoming
# connections. Some headsets that support both profiles will only connect the
# other one automatically so the default setting of true is usually a good
# idea.
#AutoConnect=true

# Headset interface specific options (i.e. options which affect how the audio
# service interacts with remote headset devices)
[Headset]

# Set to true to support HFP, false means only HSP is supported
# Defaults to true
HFP=false

# Maximum number of connected HSP/HFP devices per adapter. Defaults to 1
MaxConnected=1

# Set to true to enable use of fast connectable mode (faster page scanning)
# for HFP when incoming call starts. Default settings are restored after
# call is answered or rejected. Page scan interval is much shorter and page
# scan type changed to interlaced. Such allows faster connection initiated
# by a headset.
FastConnectable=true

# Just an example of potential config options for the other interfaces
#[A2DP]
#SBCSources=1
#MPEG12Sources=0

Enable=Source,Sink,Headset

2013-10-30 Thread James Brierley
Not good news: Sarah Sharp's patch to the USB core (mentioned above)
hasn't helped.

Now that I've *finally* found out what I should be doing in
/etc/sysfs.conf (

module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend = -1

) I might finally be able to see if this improves things.

[Bug 1072234] Re: 050d:0017 Bluetooth mouse randomly disconnects

2013-10-30 Thread James Brierley
The steps in the previous comment didn't work either. It seems that
autosuspend still occurs for individual devices even when usbcore is
told not to do it. I don't know enough about the internals of the Linux
kernel to know if this is intended behaviour.

I've tried manually adding every USB device to /etc/sysfs.conf, and I'll
see if that improves matters, but suffice it to say that my hopes aren't
high.

The only (possibly) helpful thing I've noticed is that whenever I
restart sysfsutils when the mouse has stopped responding, it comes back
to life. I don't know what this could mean.

[Bug 1072234] Re: 050d:0017 Bluetooth mouse randomly disconnects

2013-10-29 Thread James Brierley
I'm still investigating this bug. The situation at present is:

* Bug still present in Saucy's stock 3.11.0-13 kernel.
* Appears to be related to USB powersaving.
* Installing sysfsutils and adding the line
bus/usb/devices/*/power/autosuspend -1 to /etc/sysfs.conf *appears* to be a
workaround. This is a really cheap and dirty hack as it disables autosuspend
for every USB device, but you could be more surgical and work out the right
directory for your problem Bluetooth device.
* A kernel dev at Intel claims that a too-small timeout in the kernel's USB
core might be related: http://marc.info/?l=linux-usbm=137714769606183w=2.
Currently compiling a git clone'd kernel with her patch. Updates soon.

[Bug 1072234] Re: 050d:0017 Bluetooth mouse randomly disconnects

2013-10-29 Thread James Brierley
And a correction: sysfsutils doesn't actually support globbing; I pieced
together this suggestion from several solutions, no wonder it didn't
work... The correct version of this workaround is to do something such
as this:

james@rainbowphoenix:~$ ls -1 /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/autosuspend
/sys/bus/usb/devices/1-1.1/power/autosuspend
/sys/bus/usb/devices/1-1.2/power/autosuspend
/sys/bus/usb/devices/1-1/power/autosuspend
/sys/bus/usb/devices/2-1.7.1/power/autosuspend
/sys/bus/usb/devices/2-1.7.2/power/autosuspend
/sys/bus/usb/devices/2-1.7.3/power/autosuspend
/sys/bus/usb/devices/2-1.7/power/autosuspend
/sys/bus/usb/devices/2-1/power/autosuspend
/sys/bus/usb/devices/4-1/power/autosuspend
/sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/power/autosuspend
/sys/bus/usb/devices/usb2/power/autosuspend
/sys/bus/usb/devices/usb3/power/autosuspend
/sys/bus/usb/devices/usb4/power/autosuspend

You can then add them to /etc/sysfs.conf. In my case, the relevant paths
are the ones which include 2-1.7.*.

More testing tomorrow.

[Bug 1232783] [NEW] Appearance dialog crashes on Intel graphics hardware

2013-09-29 Thread James Brierley
Public bug reported:

When launching the appearance dialog, it is unresponsive and quickly
stalls, the window greys out and it requires a kill or 'force quit'.

This appears to be specific to Intel graphics hardware (and possibly
other brands) as another Ubuntu user I know who is using the proprietary
ATI drivers is not experiencing the problem.

I'm sorry but no matter what I do I can't get what's required. I've
tried using apport-cli to generate a symbolic backtrace, but when I
choose the relevant option it just exits after setting up the sandbox.

[Bug 1072234] Re: Bluetooth mouse randomly disconnects

2013-05-14 Thread James Brierley
This is still an issue with the stock Raring kernel. Using the upstream
kernel package cured the problem before, so it definitely seems Ubuntu-
specific. Trying the most recent upstream kernel again to make sure.

Oh my, I completely forgot about this bug! I've since changed the
hardware that exhibited the problem, so unfortunately I can't do any
testing any more. As far as I remember, the freezing happened going from
desktop - tty. As updates rolled in it still did it occasionally but
the machine did not lock up solid. Sorry I can't be more helpful, maybe
this bug should be marked invalid.

[Bug 1130857] Re: Some images have a blue tint

2013-02-22 Thread James Brierley
David, here's the rather poor workaround I used:

apt-get remove firefox
cd /var/cache/apt/archives
dpkg -i *firefox*18.02*

Then pin Firefox at this version by pasting the following into
/etc/apt/preferences.d/firefox:

Package: *firefox*
Pin: version n=18.0.2
Pin-Priority: 999

apt-get update and you should be sorted until this bug is fixed - modulo
security holes.

[Bug 1130857] [NEW] Some images have a blue tint

2013-02-20 Thread James Brierley
Public bug reported:

Firefox 19.0 on Xubuntu 12.10 on a Late 2005 Apple Mac mini.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open Firefox.
2. Navigate to an image-heavy website (Flickr, for instance). Note that some
images have a blue tint.
3. If you already have enough of a browsing history, open a new tab and observe
that the screenshots of your most visited pages also look too blue.

Downgrading back to version 18.2 makes the problem go away, although
using an outdated browser is not much of a workaround.

I can test if required.

It appears to be a gstreamer problem. Sure enough, after selecting 'Mute

[Bug 917557] Re: Ubuntu Server edition does not recognize serial console during installation

2012-12-26 Thread James Brierley
It may be worth mentioning that Debian's own debian-installer (at least
when I last used it) does detect when installation is being conducted
over serial and adds a line to inittab enabling serial logins. This
should perhaps be adapted to add a ttyS0.conf for Upstart.

During a serial Ubuntu install, the relevant configuration *is* added to
the generated grub.cfg (i.e. the GRUB menu will appear on the serial
line) but console=ttyS0,9600n8 (or whatever) is not appended to the
kernel line so boot messages will likewise be sent over serial. And,
crucially, since Upstart has not been instructed to start a getty,
serial logins are not possible.

A workaround until this is fixed is to install over serial, then upon
reboot temporarily edit GRUB's kernel line with
console=ttyS{port},{baud} and single for single user mode. Then add the
relevant .conf for Upstart, change /etc/default/grub to append the
correct console parameters to the kernel line by default, run update-
grub, and reboot. You should then be able to see all your boot messages
and log in.

[Bug 1086727] [NEW] ureadahead refuses to run even with no existing pack file

2012-12-05 Thread James Brierley
Public bug reported:

I noticed that my Quantal desktop was starting slowly, and found that
ureadahead was not being started. Attempting to start it manually
produced the output:

/var/lib/ureadahead/pack: No such file or directory
Counted 1 CPUs

ureadahead: Error while tracing: No such file or directory

This seems to be a bug since according to the manual page ureadahead is
supposed to just generate a new pack file when none exists. Applying
--force-trace did not make any difference.

[Bug 1072234] Re: Bluetooth mouse randomly disconnects

2012-11-10 Thread James Brierley
Reverting to Precise's bluez did not eliminate the problem.

However, when I booted into my last Precise kernel (3.2.0-32-generic) my
Bluetooth became as reliable as it was before. This is even with the
latest bluez (4.101-0ubuntu6).

So, this is not a bluez problem, but a regression in Linux between
kernel 3.2 and 3.5.

[Bug 1072234] Re: Bluetooth mouse randomly disconnects

2012-11-07 Thread James Brierley
Some updates:

When I lose the ability to move the mouse, the light on the Bluetooth
adapter continues to flash if the mouse is moved, suggesting that
Bluetooth commands are still being received. I am able to reconnect the
mouse by disconnecting the Bluetooth adapter, reinserting it and
reconnecting. However, I have found that I have to switch to a TTY and
back to Unity to be able to move the mouse.

Due to this (and the fact that the mouse was rock solid under Precise) I
am certain that the problem lies with Ubuntu and not with my hardware. I
have downgraded to Precise's Bluetooth stack to check if this is a
regression.

[Bug 1072234] [NEW] Bluetooth mouse randomly disconnects

2012-10-27 Thread James Brierley
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to Quantal, my Belkin bluetooth mouse disconnects
sporadically from my computer. Sometimes this will happen several times
a day, at other times it will stay connected for almost the entire day
without a problem.

After the connection is dropped, Bluetooth seems to become unresponsive.
Generally unplugging and replugging the USB adapter is necessary to
return it to a usable state.

It was extremely reliable under Precise.

[Bug 1069694] Re: Freezes and scrambled screen when switching to TTY

2012-10-23 Thread James Brierley
The problem occurred again today shortly after my Bluetooth mouse lost
its connection and I plugged in a USB mouse to reconnect it. Unsure of
how this could have any effect on graphics, but noting it anyway.

[Bug 1069694] [NEW] Freezes and scrambled screen when switching to TTY

2012-10-22 Thread James Brierley
Public bug reported:

Apport thinks this is a GPU hang. It's definitely only happened since I
updated to Quantal.

Nothing responds after this happens, I can't switch to other TTYs or
back to Unity. Only REISUB does anything.

It's also happened a couple of times upon ejecting a USB drive, although
in that case I can still move the mouse.

[Bug 919338] Re: vt100-w no longer displays in 132 columns on DEC VT420 terminal

2012-04-15 Thread James Brierley
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected precise

** Description changed:

I have a DEC VT420 terminal connected to my Ubuntu system, set up for
'wide' (132 column) mode. Until recently, possibly although not
definitely when I began testing Precise, running getty with the vt100-w
profile ensured that when I logged in, applications such as top, nano or
weechat would use all 132 columns. Now, though, everything is squashed
into 80 columns even with all the same settings (on the VT420 and Ubuntu
  machine).

When I log in on the terminal and type

  $ echo $TERM

I get the expected 'vt100-w'. However:

  $ tput cols

results in '80' and sure enough, only the first 80 columns of the screen
  are filled.

I strongly doubt this is a problem with the terminal as all its settings
were 'known good' and I have checked and double-checked them for
  correctness.

Admittedly, I can work around this by issuing

  $ stty 132

- and then everything works as expected. However, I am curious as to why
- none of the 'wide' terminfos are working any more and believe there may
- be a bug here somewhere.
+ and then everything works as expected. However, I am curious as to why none
of the 'wide' terminfos are working any more and believe there may be a bug
here somewhere.

[Bug 964479] [NEW] Bottom pinned icon on Launcher is pushed around by unpinned app icons

2012-03-25 Thread James Brierley
Public bug reported:

On current Precise beta, the bottom app icon pinned to the Launcher is
not 'sticky' as it should be. When I first log in and launch an app that
isn't pinned to the Launcher, that app's icon will appear between the
bottom pinned icon and second-from-bottom one, instead of between the
bottom icon and the workspace switcher as it should.

This is a regression - this problem existed in Oneiric and was fixed
recently but after the recent Unity upgrade has now returned.

[Bug 950044] [NEW] System menu icon jagged

2012-03-08 Thread James Brierley
Public bug reported:

On current Precise, the system menu icon is jagged and ugly. The other
indicator icons seem unaffected. I am using an ATI Radeon X600 video
card. This is on a fresh install of Precise beta. During the install,
the icon looked as it should, but when launching the installed system
(or a live system from the CD) it looks wrong. I don't know if this is a
Unity, Compiz or X problem.

[Bug 922522] Re: Volume is always set to full on reboot

2012-01-30 Thread James Brierley
I installed Onieric (as opposed to in-development Precise) on my
mother's new laptop today, and realised what the problem really was; the
volume control on the Unity login screen is not synchronised with the
sound indicator on the desktop. On bootup, the login screen's volume
control is always at full, which Pulseaudio is obviously responding to.
The state is not updated until I adjust the indicator's volume control -
hence the problem. I think.

Changed bug to reflect this discovery.

[Bug 922522] Re: Volume is always set to full on reboot

2012-01-28 Thread James Brierley
Unfortunately, I was wrong - the problem isn't fixed. The volume control
is set at a different position by default now, but in spite of this the
volume is still at full until I move the control (mouse wheel or
dragging the slider after clicking on the indicator).

It seems that the position of the volume control is being saved, but
Pulseaudio is not respecting its position on startup.

[Bug 922522] [NEW] Volume is always set to full on reboot

2012-01-27 Thread James Brierley
Public bug reported:

On current Precise, system volume level is not persistent across
reboots. It is remembered if I log in and out, but is always being set
to maximum after a reboot. This has not been a problem until fairly
recently. I am not sure if this is a problem with Pulseaudio itself or
the volume control.

After messing with pavucontrol, this is no longer a problem. Sorry for a
pointless bug report.

[Bug 919338] [NEW] vt100-w no longer displays in 132 columns on DEC VT420 terminal

2012-01-20 Thread James Brierley
Public bug reported:

I have a DEC VT420 terminal connected to my Ubuntu system, set up for
'wide' (132 column) mode. Until recently, possibly although not
definitely when I began testing Precise, running getty with the vt100-w
profile ensured that when I logged in, applications such as top, nano or
weechat would use all 132 columns. Now, though, everything is squashed
into 80 columns even with all the same settings (on the VT420 and Ubuntu
machine).

When I log in on the terminal and type

$ echo $TERM

I get the expected 'vt100-w'. However:

$ tput cols

results in '80' and sure enough, only the first 80 columns of the screen
are filled.

I strongly doubt this is a problem with the terminal as all its settings
were 'known good' and I have checked and double-checked them for
correctness.

Admittedly, I can work around this by issuing

$ stty 132

and then everything works as expected. However, I am curious as to why
none of the 'wide' terminfos are working any more and believe there may
be a bug here somewhere.
