Re: [Bug 827669] Re: [138a:0018] Validity Sensors fingerprint reader not recognized
On 09/07/2014 12:38 PM, Ruben Rocha wrote: Hi guys On 12.04 it is a bit tricky for the driver to install ok because the one on the fprint repo replaces the one of the deb package. Try this: sudo apt-get remove libfprint0 install the deb again sudo apt-get install fprintd libpam-fprintd I think that you need to install the deb package first and then install the other files from the fprint repo. Reboot and try to install the deb package again. Hi Ruben, Thanks for your efforts. When I follow your instructions, on 12.04.5, I get the following when trying to start fprint_demo: fprint_demo: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.17' not found (required by /usr/local/lib/libfprint.so.0) So it seems that the libfprint from the fprint repo has not been compiled for 12.04 which carries glibc 2.15. [Bug 1052861] Re: After upgrade to new kernel version, machine crashes after a few hours of uptime
The released 2.6.32-43-generic kernel crashed after about 5 hours uptime while the corresponding compat-wireless package was not also installed. So I think that this validates the hypothesis that the determining factor is the presence of the compat-wireless package (i.e. whether or not newer ath9k code is in use), as opposed to a potentially only partially installed kernel package (I made sure that there were no error messages when I last installed the -43 kernel package). If anyone's still interested in this issue I guess the next step would be to go back to the -42 kernel package without compat-wireless and so on, as far back as it takes to find the release in which the regression was introduced. But let me say that I've been running this box for some time and have always installed kernel upgrades when they became available (i.e. usually before the corresponding compat-wireless package became available), and I've not seen crashes like this before. Luis, since I seem to be the only person affected by this problem I would not object to closing this bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1052861 Title: After upgrade to new kernel version, machine crashes after a few hours of uptime To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1052861/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1052861] Re: After upgrade to new kernel version, machine crashes after a few hours of uptime
I have now purged all -43 and -44 kernels (i.e. the released -43 kernel and all test kernels v1 through v5), then reinstalled the released -43 kernel, and also pulled in the compat-wireless package for -43. After rebooting the machine has stayed up overnight. Luis and I both had a theory about the cause: - Luis found an installation issue in the apt logs which might have caused the initial installation of the -43 kernel to be bodged. I would however have expected that situation to have been corrected by my subsequent dpkg -i-ing of the test kernel packages. - I noticed that I am using certain modules from the compat-wireless package, and that a compat-wireless package corresponding with the -43 kernel package had not yet been available when I first upgraded to -43, nor while I was testing the v1 through v3 test kernels which were also based on the -43 ABI. I could try and remove the -43 compat-wireless package and test again; would you like me to do that? (Meanwhile I'll keep the current situation until the machine has been up for at least 48 hours in order to confirm stability).
I can now explain one class of differences between the modules loaded under -42 versus -44. I am using the compat-wireless package, a version of which does not yet exist for the -44 kernel (or at least: I hadn't installed it). The two ath9k-related modules which are not being loaded under -44 but are being loaded under -42 come from the compat-wireless package. This still leaves me stumped as to why all of these filesystem-related modules are being loaded. They consume rather a lot of memory so I guess that (on this small embedded system) they might lead to certain kinds of memory running out. I would be grateful for any hints on finding out why these modules are being loaded. The only filesystem I'm using on this box is ext2 (on a CompactFlash card, if that makes any difference). Other than proc, sysfs, debugfs, securityfs, devtmpfs, devpts and tmpfs, that is. I guess the above story also holds true for the -43-based kernels you have asked me to test. I sincerely hope that this does not completely invalidate the tests I've been doing (and the kernel packages you've been building etc). I am the original bug reporter. I can confirm that reverting to the previous kernel package (linux- image-2.6.32-42-generic, version 2.6.32-42.96) returns the machine to stability. [Bug 989532] [NEW] Thunderbird does not connect to POP nor SMTP servers
Public bug reported: Thunderbird fails to connect to the POP and SMTP servers. These servers reside on the same subnet. There are no error messages to speak of; the connections just time out. This is not a firewall problem. I have verified that I can connect to the POP and SMTP servers using telnet. I did this from a terminal window on the same machine and as the same user as the one that cannot get Thunderbird to work, using commands like telnet popserver 110 and telnet smtpserver 25. Tracing with tcpdump confirms that no traffic is actually exchanged with the servers: there is no attempt at establishing a TCP connection. This is with Thunderbird freshly installed on Precise. It was not installed prior to the upgrade to Precise. There was no .thunderbird directory in my home directory. I was using Seamonkey before the upgrade and got Thunderbird to import everything from Seamonkey upon first use. [Bug 454575] Re: [karmic][sc1200] kernel 2.6.31-14-generic oops on boot
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 480144 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/480144 Actually, the bug has been fixed when Ubuntu 9.10 adopted upstream stable kernel release 2.6.31.7 in the form of linux-image-2.6.31-17. See bug #480144 Ubuntu has since issued further kernel updates which also include the fix (we're now at -19). I assure you that this newer kernel does indeed fix the problem: I am running Karmic on a Soekris net4801 box that I previously could not install the 2.6.31 kernel on due to this boot-time crash. Please note that if you are installing 9.10 on such a box, rather than upgrading from a previous Ubuntu release, you will also need to use an ubuntu-installer package that includes the fixed kernel. So please use the ubuntu-installer files from http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic- proposed/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/ -- [karmic][sc1200] kernel 2.6.31-14-generic oops on boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/454575 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 484698] [NEW] ntp package should not install a drift file
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ntp The drift file (in Ubuntu its default location is /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift) contains ntpd's estimate of the system's drift relative to UTC, expressed in ppm. This file is generated by ntpd, and its purpose is to speed up convergence following restart. Ubuntu's ntp package installs a drift file containing 0.000, i.e. a zero drift. The effect is that when ntpd is first started following installation of the ntp package, it will assume that zero ppm is a good estimate of the drift of the system clock. This is not correct. If no reliable estimate of the drift is known (as is the case when ntp is first installed), the drift file should simply be absent, so that ntpd knows that characterisation of the system's drift has not yet happened. The current approach causes ntpd's startup behaviour to be significantly worse than it needs to be. Please therefore simply refrain from installing a drift file. If one already exists I recommend that the ntp installer should leave it alone, except perhaps for making sure that it has the correct permissions and ownership. ** Affects: ntp (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- ntp package should not install a drift file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/484698 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 160002] Re: apparmor should have a 'usr' tunable
The recent change of description of this bug suggests a particular solution to the problem, which I think is incomplete. The problem occurs on my machine because, although /usr is located on the root filesystem, several of the directories under /usr are soft links to targets on a different filesystem. I need to do this because the root filesystem is a smallish flash disk that does not have enough space to hold some of the files that are needed only late in the boot process (such as X etc). I have fixed this by changing all of the apparmor configuration files that contain impacted paths to include the target path. Laborious, although such an update could probably be automated. Perhaps a dpkg-reconfigure hook could be added to enable the admin to update the apparmor config files when particular files or directories have been moved. -- apparmor should have a 'usr' tunable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/160002 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 395579] Re: sc1200 ide controller not supported in intrepid
I have now upgraded this system to jaunty from intrepid while running the hardy kernel. I confirm that the kernel included with intrepid (Linux soekris 2.6.28-13-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 30 19:49:51 UTC 2009 i586) works with the sc1200 disk controller. So: fixed in jaunty. [Bug 395579] Re: sc1200 ide controller not supported in intrepid
I won't have time to test this for a few days, but my concerns are as follows: - intrepid (8.10) is currently a necessary step on the upgrade path from 8.04 LTS to 9.04 LTS; - 8.10 does not boot on a system that depends on an sc1200 disk controller; - the work-around is to boot the 8.04 LTS kernel, but I don't know (and won't have time for several days) to test whether a distribution upgrade works while running a kernel version that does not match the distribution being upgraded. So as it stands, I submit that this is still a problem that needs to be resolved in 8.10, even if 9.04 LTS supports the sc1200 controller. -- sc1200 ide controller not supported in intrepid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/395579 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: My Soekris net4801 won't boot after the upgrade from hardy to interpid: it can't find the root partition. [Bug 343204] Re: Mode of /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt should be 660
Here's my feeble attempt at diagnosing this: mythbuntu-control-centre_0.10-0ubuntu1_all.deb is not the smoking gun, but it does contain the following in data/usr/share/pycentral/mythbuntu-control-centre/site-packages/MythbuntuControlCentre/changer.py: def write_mysql_txt(self,user,password,database,server): Writes out a mysql.txt in /etc/mythtv if os.path.exists(/etc/mythtv/mysql.txt): print Moving /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt to /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt.mythbuntu-old shutil.move(/etc/mythtv/mysql.txt, /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt.mythbuntu-old) out_f = open(/etc/mythtv/mysql.txt, w) out_f.write(DBHostName= + server + \n) out_f.write(DBUserName= + user + \n) out_f.write(DBName= + database + \n) out_f.write(DBPassword= + password + \n) out_f.close() This snippet does not appear to set the mode of the file at all, so that it inherits the permissions from /etc/mythtv (which on my system is owner by root). I think that this does need to be fixed. mythtv-common_0.20.2-0ubuntu10_all.deb control/postinst contains the following: NEW=$(mktemp -t mysql.txt-XX) if [ -s /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt ]; then INPUT=/etc/mythtv/mysql.txt chown --reference=$INPUT $NEW chmod --reference=$INPUT $NEW else INPUT=/usr/share/mythtv/mysql.txt.dist chown mythtv:mythtv $NEW chmod 660 $NEW fi ($NEW later gets mv-ed into place). This seems correct: it either inherits the ownership and mode of the file if it already exists, or else it gets set to mythtv:mythtv and 660. That's all I've been able to come up with. This was done by searching for mysql.txt within the files contained in the deb archives (ar -x, followed by tar zxvf of both data and control files, followed by fgrep -r). If you have other suggestions for diagnosing this I'd be delighted. I'm afraid I'm not able to actually fix this ** Changed in: mythtv (Ubuntu) Assignee: JanCeuleers (jan-ceuleers) = Mario Limonciello (superm1) -- Mode of /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt should be 660 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/343204 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 343204] [NEW] Mode of /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt should be 660
Mario, I will attempt to identify the cause of the mode squashing of this file. It will be a fez days before I have a chance to look at this though. [Bug 343204] [NEW] Mode of /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt should be 660
Public bug reported: My frontend machine runs mythfrontend as user frontend, not as user mythtv. I believe that this is a supported configuration. User frontend is a member of group mythtv. This is however not enough for user frontend to be able to read /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt, since it has mode 600. I think that this file should have mode 660 so that members of group mythtv are able to access it. Something (I don't know what) periodically resets the mode of this file to 600, causing my frontend no longer to be able to access the database. [Bug 343204] Re: Mode of /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt should be 660
Mario, Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, trying 9.04 is not an option for me right now; this is a production system which has many version dependencies outside of mythtv. If you believe that this problem has been solved in recent versions of mythtv (or mythbuntu) then I'm happy. Meanwhile I can just chmod the file from /etc/rc.local as a work-around. Up to you what to do about this ticket; I'm not opposed to it being closed. [Bug 252365] Re: mdadm does not add spares to arrays on boot
I have been advised on the linux-raid mailing list [1] that this problem is more likely to be caused by mkinitrd than by mdadm, and that I should therefore file a bug against initramfs-tools. [1]: http://marc.info/?l=linux-raidm=123421650832520w=2 ** Also affects: initramfs-tools Importance: Undecided Status: New -- mdadm does not add spares to arrays on boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252365 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 252365] Re: mdadm does not add spares to arrays on boot
I'm sorry for having let this bug linger for such a long time. I think I have now found the proper solution to this problem. Restating the problem: I have six disks, four of which are served by a sata-sil24 controller, the other two being served by a sata-via controller. The active partitions of my raid5 set live on the first four disks, the spare partitions live on one of the other two disks (the other being used for backup). With the above setup, the active members of the raid set would come up fine upon boot, but the spares would not be added automatically, so that I had to add them from /etc/rc.local On my system, this problem has been solved by including both sata modules in the initrd image. That is: I added sata-via and sata-sil24 to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules , rebuilt the initrd images using update- initramfs -u -k all, and everything is now activated automatically on boot. Bjorn Ruud: can you let us know whether your spare disk is also served by a controller that requires a different module from the one serving your active disks? If so, would you give the above a go and report back? -- mdadm does not add spares to arrays on boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252365 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
