[Bug 1021183] Re: after some time when evolution runs in a wild loop of fetching messages and removing messages from cache

2012-10-29 Thread Johan Smits
I upgraded to 12.10 and now I use the EWS service to connect.
This problem did not occur anymore with the EWS connector.
It seems related to the mapi connector.

[Bug 1069757] [NEW] Libreoffice: problems with saving docs to directories of Windows networks (through samba-connection)

2012-10-22 Thread Johan Van Hoorde
Public bug reported:

At the office I use my Ubuntu computer as a work station and connect it
to our Windows network by establishing Samba (smb) connections. In this
way I can not only use the print facilities but also use directly the
network directories for opening, saving of documents.

Since ubuntu 12.04 directories of windows networks have been integrated
in the procedure for opening, saving of documents in Libreoffice.
Directories available through open samba-connections thus are integrated
in the list of directories on which docs can be saved. This was a great
new features, since before 12.04 one had to save files on a local
directory first and then move or copy them to the windows directory in
Nautilus.

After having done the upgrade to ubuntu 12.10 QQ this facility does not
work as it should. The network directories are still shown and it it
still possible to open a document. But is it not possible to save it and
giving it another name. Another thing which had become impossible is to
open a document from another source than the network directory (e.g.
local directory, attached doc to a mail) and save it in a directory of
the network server.

When doing this the system gives the information 'Error saving the document
#name#. The file does not exist' (see screenshot 1, text in italian). If one
then presses the OK-button there is a second error communication with the
following text:
Error is saving the document #name#:
General Error
Generel I/O error
(see screenshot 2, text in italian)

I have checked whether the same kind of error also occurs in other
programs, at least in Evince (pdf-reader). This is not the case.

A last issue I want to report is that when one opens a doc (e.g. odt)
from a network directory, modifies it and then save it, this seems to
work. There is no error messsage. When checking by re-opening the saved
document, in a few experiments I did the modifications were not saved.
In nautilus the date indication of the file also remained the same. In
other experiments however the saving of the documents with the
modifications seemed to work as it should.

conclusion: the integration of network directories in LO has become
unreliable, with a high risk of loss of information for the user.

[Bug 1069234] Re: regression: local admin not authorized for many tasks

Confirmed. Installed OS on my SSD, I deleted the partitions on my HDD during
installation. Now I am not allowed to create new partition through disk utility
-- cannot mount it either
It gives the error mentioned in bug description.

Any workaround for this? I kind of need that extra space :S

2012-10-21 Thread Johan Helgø
Well, I found a workaround for my spesific problem: start the OS
installation again, go to the screen where you can format/partition
hard-drives. I did what I had to do there, then cancelled the
installation and rebooted. Now I can mount/unmount the hard drive and I
can use it. However, If I try to format it, then I get the error message
again.

[Bug 1069008] [NEW] main menu on top bar doesn't appear

2012-10-20 Thread Johan Van Hoorde
Public bug reported:

When opening a file with LibreOffice, e.g. text file, in Ubuntu 12.10, quite
often the main menu on the top bar doesn't appear at the right sight of the
symbols for closing, minimizing and maximizing the active window. Thus it is
impossible to manage the file, for instance to save it with another name, to
insert, format etc...
Sometimes the menu appears after a period of time, sometimes it seems to never
appear. The only thing one can do is to close and re-open until the menu
finally appears. This problem occurred only after having upgraded from 12.04 to
12.10, not before.
The problem is shown in the screenshot I attach to this report. One has to look
at the bar where pointer is situated. Normally a menu list has to appear with
File, Modify etc... but there is nothing.

[Bug 1066262] Re: Catalyst overscan settings not working after reboot

For some reason the problem has solved itself. Literally the reboot
after I sent in the bug it started working correctly without me doing
anything.

Very strange since the problem occurred consistently over several days
and 5-6 reboots. It could have been solved by some bugg update but I
honestly have no idea.

[Bug 1066262] [NEW] Catalyst overscan settings not working after reboot

2012-10-13 Thread Johan Hult
Public bug reported:

I am using ubuntu 12.10 beta 2 with teh latest updates and have
activated the FGLRX-driver (updates version).

I have started using the restricted FGLRX-drivers and after adjusting
overscan values for my moniter everything looks fine, but after every
reboot it seems as if the overscan values I set in the catalyst control
center are not implemented.

The value itself is correct in the control center (0%), but the system
seems to not react correctly to it. As soon as I move the overscan dial,
it starts to react to the overscan % value used.

[Bug 1063965] Re: Choppy sound in 12.10

2012-10-10 Thread Johan
I found the following link on the net,
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42t=44862; tried what was
suggested there and it sounds better.
Some value adjustments to daemon.config(etc/pulse) file

default-sample-format = s16le
default-sample-rate = 44100
; alternate-sample-rate = 48000
default-sample-channels = 2
; default-channel-map = front-left,front-right

default-fragments = 32
default-fragment-size-msec = 50

I hope that this will help to give a better perspective on the problem.
Failing that, will it be safe to remove PulseAdio completely and run with Alsa
only, I am on UbuntuStudio and are scared it will break Jack. Any suggestions?

I am pretty sure that testing isn't possible because of the involvement
of the binary driver (fglrx). I think it's not compatible with newer

[Bug 1062970] Re: mtrr: no MTRR for e0000000,10000000 found

2012-10-08 Thread Johan
Currently my system shows:

[0.00] Found optimal setting for mtrr clean up

I ran apport-collect 1062970, but it didn't really do anything besides
starting a browser and telling me I was already logged in. Due to the
massive list of open bugs in Apport, I also have stopped using Apport,
since it didn't work in 80% of the cases or so for various reasons, none
of them which are related to me the user. I.e., the success rate is too
low for it to be useful. If you want your bugs reported with higher
quality, concentrate on fixing apport first.

See https://bugs.launchpad.net/apport for the already existing massive
list of open bugs for Apport.

For this particular problem there appears to be a correlation between
the fglrx driver being loaded and this problem, but whether it's really
fglrx's fault? If you type fglrx mtrr into any search engine, it will
show this correlation nicely. It's certainly not a problem unique to my
machine.

I selected that I didn't know the package. It's kind of useless that it
then still has selected speechdispatcher, which is completely unrelated.

[Bug 1046244]

2012-10-04 Thread Johan Krüger Haglert
(In reply to comment #27)
Now that Qt 4.8.3 (the first upstream Qt version to include this patch) is
in Arch Linux, the problem occurs there too. For me, it caused both
plasma-desktop and kwin to segfault on startup, thus making KDE almost
unusable. (As a temporary measure to prevent these from crashing, I reverted
 to Qt 4.8.2.)

kdeinit4 and kwin crashes here to using 4.8.3 in opensuse since they got
that in their kde49 repository.

Maybe I should just mention that this was a clean install and that it
worked previously, but an update some where along the line broke it.

[Bug 1047581] [NEW] xrandr + wesnoth = FAIL

2012-09-07 Thread Johan
Public bug reported:

What I do to start wesnoth:
xrandr --output SCREENA --mode 1920x1080
xrandr --output SCREENB --off
/usr/games/wesnoth-1.10

What I get:

The screenshot shows a wrong off-set. (The black part is really visible
on the screen (SCREENA) and is thus the buggy part.)

The problem isn't in xrandr, because other applications do not have this
problem.

2012-09-04 Thread Johan Ramm-Ericson
Actually, this is not the first time we see a similar issue. We ran into
it with 10.04 / Lucid + samba + gdm and this was before our domain
controllers were 2008 R2. I can't quite remeber what fixed it then (I'm
still digging through old emails) but I have a vague memory of it being
fixed by a samba / winbind patch.

[Bug 1045226] [NEW] Thunderbird URLs don't open in configured browser

2012-09-03 Thread Johan
Public bug reported:

Thunderbird 15 opens links in tabs within Thunderbird instead of in an
external browser. There are settings to supposedly change this (one
google query away if you are interested in which one it is (and if you
are capable of fixing this bug, you already know what I am talking
about) and these do not work.

A solution for this problem is given when there are complete
instructions (e.g. which pref or user_pref modifications to make) and no
sooner than that.

See also here for lots of people complaining about this:
https://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/link_in_thunderbird_email_wont_open_in_browser

One final request: can't you write a regression test for this (and other
basic features), because it seems rather unprofessional that this bug
has occurred over and over again, especially in an application which is
now the default in Ubuntu?

[Bug 1045226] Re: Thunderbird URLs don't open in configured browser

2012-09-03 Thread Johan
Chris Coulson:
1. I don't care in the slightest how it works on _your_ machine.
2. Fact of the matter is that tabs are being opened.
3. You are also ignoring the people in the link I provided.
4. You have a ridiculous claim regarding me having to read the bug reporting
guide lines
5. Apport is yet another broken Ubuntu program (See:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/apport ) . I have hit several of those bugs in the
past and consider whoever developed Apport to be lacking in software
development skills and thus not worthy of my time. So, if you want me to use
Apport to report bugs for Thunderbird -- meaning that you adopt it in your
process -- _you_ are the one who needs to fix Apport too in addition of
Thunderbird. That's _fine_ by me, but don't expect me to use even more crap.
6. I hope your next response is going to show more intelligence, as you have
shown zero now.

[Bug 1045226] Re: Thunderbird URLs don't open in configured browser

2012-09-03 Thread Johan
Now, you are just twisting my words. I directed this at you and I know
of people who work for Mozilla who would never write the idiotic
response you have just given and who I even respect; you are just not
one of them, because you have demonstrated your stupidity in just a few
lines.

Again, it's just you, the person responsible for Apport, and whoever
hired you in the end.

As such, this does not constitute your colleagues, which would suggest a
lack of hierarchy and not being part of a different team. It might very
well be true that they are as stupid as you, but it's not something I
talked about.

Also, you are the one who didn't take my report seriously and as such
you didn't follow the code of conduct. I simply copied your behaviour.
You should go into politics. Perhaps that might be some place where your
incompetence is not noticed.

Summary: there is a bug which has been observed by multiple people and
you close it because you don't like the part where I ridicule you off
the planet, because you give a response which only a bean counter could
give? That's just hilarious.

You know what? I think I will reopen. Yes, we can!

[Bug 1044667] [NEW] bootlogd color bug

2012-09-01 Thread Johan
Public bug reported:

This thread explains both the problem and a possible workaround.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10757823/display-file-with-escaped-
color-codes-boot-messages-from-bootlog-daemon

The problem is that cat /var/log/boot does not result in a file which is
displayed in the exact same way as on startup. That is, instead of
displaying e.g. 'ok' in green it shows some things which are clearly
escape codes.

[Bug 949265] Re: GKSU says my password is wrong

2012-08-24 Thread Johan
Did you try to investigate around su and sudo? Because gksu calls them
regarding the option you passed (or not). In my case, the source of the
problem is sudo.

By the way, I did manually set a root password in command line with
sudo passwd. Then I can connect as root in command line using su
(with no option). Probably that's why gsku -w -u root synaptic works
in my case...

[Bug 1034928] Re: Fontconfig warning: Having multiple values in test isn't supported and may not works as expected

2012-08-22 Thread Johan
I am very new at this bug reporting story, so please bear with me.
It affects my software center itself, starting it with terminal, I get same
report:- Fontconfig warning: /etc/fonts/conf.d/65-andika.conf, line 16:
Having multiple values in test isn't supported and may not works as expected
plus more warnings.

gedit produce same output.
~$ gedit
Fontconfig warning: /etc/fonts/conf.d/65-andika.conf, line 16: Having
multiple values in test isn't supported and may not works as expected + more
warnings.

I presume that it is the same bug that is causing my problems. If
further detail is required to possibly assist to nail this one, please
ask and I will oblige.

Release 12.10 (quantal) 64-bit
Kernel Linux 3.5.0-10-lowlatency

[Bug 1038972] [NEW] gnome-shell dead-locks when asking for ssh-passwd using sshfs.

2012-08-20 Thread Carl-Johan Kjellander
Public bug reported:

I can reliably get gnome-shell to dead-lock while using gmusicbrowser
with all the music on an sshfs mounted filesystem.

Steps to reproduce.
Computer A is the desktop, B is the remote server that hosts the filesystem.

1. On A, mount the remote filesystem on B with sshfs with the option '-o
reconnect'. This will trigger ssh-askpass later.
2. On A, start gmusicbrowser and set the library to the mounted sshfs
filesystem.
3. Play a song and pause it.
4. Remove focus from gmusicbrowser, for instance but putting it on another
workspace.
5. Reboot B.
6. Wait for B to come up.
7. On A, switch to the workspace with gmusicbrowser and the first click you do,
click the settings gear to get the floating window.

8. Enjoy your dead-lock

When gmusicbrowser gets focus it first opens a floating menu, but also
it triggers a reconnect to the sshfs filesystem since it has a mp3 file
open, and this starts ssh-askpass, which opens a dialog to get your
password, but it cannot get complete focus because of the floating meny
and now displays an alert cannot get complete focus, maybe someone is
eavesdropping, which cannot be clicked because it can't get focused.

Gnome-shell is completely deadlocked, mouse still moves, but nothing can get
focus, hot corners does nothing, typing does nothing. Killing gmusicbrowser
does nothing, killing gnome-shell restarts it into the same dead-locked state.
The kernel complains that gmusicbrowser is hung for over 120s. Xkill can't grab
the mouse is says.

You can get out the dead-lock by using 'pkill ssh-askpass' for another
vt, but that took me a long time to figure out.

[Bug 949265] Re: GKSU says my password is wrong

2012-08-19 Thread Johan

-- BUT --

It seems to be a sudo bug or limitation, when looking at this bug
report: https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?24318

I cite the answer:
« Please note that the temporary xauth file is created with working permissions
with the su backend (gksu -w).

gksu -w -u firefoxuser firefox

That workaround does not provide the configurability of sudo, though. So
a fix for sudo would be much appreceated. »

So I tried using the not-always-well documented -w option (aka --su-mode;
see 'man gksu') and it works, both on the last Debian (6.0.5) and Ubuntu
(12.04)...

AND sudo -u user command (gksu calls sudo by default, exactly same
as gksudo) doesn't seem to match the philosophy of calling a program
using sudo privileges of another user...

By the way, with some programs (such as the small optional
system-config-samba) that works only when calling directly the root user
(gksu -w -u root system-config-samba)...

2012-08-11 Thread Johan Ehnberg
Public bug reported:

[Bug 990436] Re: Xorg with fglrx on ATI HD3650 crashes with Illegal instruction

2012-08-05 Thread Johan
Hi everyone,

Is this bug fixed?

I've got the same issue with my HD3450 AGP with an Athlon XP 2400+ (2.0
GHz) / nForce2 motherboard (2 GB DDR) and Ubuntustudio 12.04 (32 bits)
installed.

I first tried to install AMD/ATI proprietary driver with the GUI driver
installer but the system failed to start Xorg after reboot.

In command line, I removed all installed fglrx packages and I tried to
manually install packages fglrx and fglrx-amdcccle with apt-get, I
created a xorg.conf file using aticonfig --initial and ... no result
- Xorg crashes with Illegal instruction at address (never twice the
same address!).

I also tried to install packages fglrx-updates and fglrx-amdcccle-
updates: still no result - Xorg crashes again.

My config:
- Graphics: Radeon HD 3450 AGP 8x
- CPU: AMD Athlon 2400+ (2.0 GHz, 32 bits)
- Chipset: nForce 2 IGP + MCP (IGP desactivated by Bios)
- RAM: 2 GB DDR-SDRAM

- Version of fglrx: 8.960, kernel-3.2.0-27-generic-pae-i686
- Ubuntu version: Ubuntustudio 12.04 (32 bits)

Johan

[Bug 1029921] [NEW] open file from natilus does not get focus when same application is running

2012-07-27 Thread Johan Smits
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 12.04 64bits when an application is open.
Open a second file that can be openend by the same application and the file
brower keeps focus and not the opened file/window/application

Reproduce:
Open a file (for example a picture)
1) The application opens and has focus
2) Go back to the file browser window
3) Click on a other file, window opens but does not have focus
4) go back to the file browser window and open an already openend file, noting
happens and does not grab focus.
See the video included for these steps.
It happens with the applications in the same way, (gedit, EOG). It workes ok
with Libreoffice.

[Bug 1030002] [NEW] xen-hypervisor-4.1-amd64 sdl support broken

2012-07-27 Thread Johan
Public bug reported:

If you use

sdl=1
vnc=0

in myconfiguration.cfg and run
# xm create myconfiguration.cfg

in a guest configuration, no sdl window is created, because the
underlying qemu-dm doesn't know the -sdl option which it is passed.

Expected result: a window in SDL showing my guest. (Note: VNC does work.
)

Actual result: an error message about how -sdl is not an option in some
log file and not seeing a working VM.

Public bug reported:

I use ubuntu 12.04 x64 NL.
Evolution version: 3.2.3

I have multiple mapi exchange accounts and randomly they get locked so
evolution is asking the password.
When I check the domain controller I see the user is locked deu to incorrect

I use an insecure connection between the server and no kerberos authentication.
Checks every 5 min for new email in only the incommin folder and sync the

It occures randomly and no logic is found yet. But it happens almost

[Bug 1026801] [NEW] Always tries to use PulseAudio, even when no PulseAudio is available

2012-07-19 Thread Johan
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04
eSpeak text-to-speech: 1.46.02 06.Jan.12

When PulseAudio is not installed, it still tries to connect to it.
Instead, it should just ALSA or OSS4 when those are available. Possibly
the configuration file could then have an entry like alsa, pulse, oss4,
which would define a preference for which audio system to use. There
should also be a way to disable bluetooth. Displaying anything about
bluetooth when there isn't even bluetooth hardware present is bad.

[Bug 873495] Re: LightDM fails to start after nvidia-current or nvidia-current-updates are installed (upstart job issue)

2012-07-15 Thread Johan Ferner
This continues to be an issue and just occured again on my home machine. My
*feeling* is that it is a race condition triggered when some module needs
compiling or some other attention the boot following an upgrade of some X
related packages. So it is hard to know if it is fixed or not.
Usually I just reboot and everything is OK. But I've seen cases at work where
it is much more persistent.
This is driving my userbase at work mad and is giving 12.04 a bad rep there.
People refuse to upgrade.
Please try to fix this.

[Bug 1020043] [NEW] postgresql logfile location not specified in error message and/or error message not visible anywhere

2012-07-02 Thread Johan
Public bug reported:

The following output can be observed under various configurations (for
example: disk full, but there are other conditions )

/etc/init.d/postgresql start
 * Starting PostgreSQL 9.1 database server
 * The PostgreSQL server failed to start. Please check the log output.
   ...fail!

Now, take the case were the disk is full, this means that there isn't any log
output, which means that the error message is extremely bad.

To make things worse, IIRC, the Ubuntu scripts throw away stderr which
means that even if postgresql returns a correct error message, that it
is simply thrown away by default.

[Bug 993213] Re: button stays grey on mouse click: paste in folder

2012-06-23 Thread Johan Smits
I have found a way to reproduce it.
Copy a random file or folder.
When you go to a Local (i mean not a netwok mounted folder) and you get a
normal paste in option.
When you mount a folder with gvfs (I used a smb mount) and try tou use the
paste in, it is grey but you can still use it.

Can someonse else reproduce it like I did? The samba mount is password
protected (if this matters)

[Bug 390989] Re: [SecurityRoadmap] Locked screen shows the desktop

I think this problem is worse now.

see the mouse and I could bring Unity sidebar to front. I do think I
