[Bug 1247621] Re: Cannot type in evince search field in Ubuntu 13.10

2013-11-14 Thread Justyn Butler
I believe I have found the solution to this problem, I think it was
caused by an incorrect AppArmor setup.

My home directory is not located in /home/ but the AppArmor
/etc/apparmor.d/tunables/home tunable had not been updated to reflect this as
described in:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingApparmor#Adjusting_Tunables

After adding my home directory to the @{HOME} list, or alternatively the
location to @{HOMEDIRS}, the problem with evince has gone away.

[Bug 1247621] Re: Cannot type in evince search field in Ubuntu 13.10

2013-11-13 Thread Justyn Butler
I have found a workaround, although it is a bit of a pain to do every
time.

If I right-click in the search bar and select a different Input Method
then I can type and find works as expected.

Whenever evince is opened the input method always already selected is:
System (IBus (Intelligent Input Bus))

If I select something else from the list, including None, Simple or X
Input Method then I can type.
If I select System (IBus) then I can't type again. So the problem seems to be
related to this in some way.

If I try the same thing in gedit then I find I can type with System
(IBus) selected without any problems. Evince is the only thing I have
seen this behaviour in so far.

[Bug 1215826] Re: Lost ability to remap Caps Lock to Ctrl

2013-11-08 Thread Justyn Butler
In response to #35.
- Install Ubuntu 13.10
- Go to keyboard layout settings
- Find 'CapsLock Key Behavior' and set to eg Make CapsLock an additional ctrl
or Make CapsLock an additional backspace.

The last point worked for years, up until Ubuntu 13.10. The option to
set CapsLock key behaviour is no longer there, and there appears to be
no replacement.

For users who set the CapsLock behaviour to something more useful to
reduce RSI (to backspace in my case) this is a problem.

[Bug 1247621] Re: Search field doesn't works in ubuntu 13.10

2013-11-06 Thread Justyn Butler
I have the same problem as described in the bug description.

I cannot type text in the find bar, whether it's brought up using ctrl-f
or clicking the magnifying icon.

However, find itself does actually work, if I paste into it using the
mouse and the right-click menu. I just can't type in it.

I also find that the problem disappeared in a guest session. It only
occurs occurs in my own user session.

This is a fresh 64-bit 13.10 installation.

Any ideas?

[Bug 926359] Re: After switching workspaces, a single alt-tab does not switch between windows

2013-01-31 Thread Justyn Butler
I see this bug, but not for all applications.

In fact currently if I directly follow the steps to reproduce and switch
to a workspace with the terminal in focus and Firefox doesn't, a single
alt-tab works as expected and changes the focus to Firefox, so no bug.

If however I try to switch to a workspace where Firefox already has
focus and alt-tab to another window (ie terminal or nautilus) it is
impossible to switch away from Firefox with a single alt-tab, and I have
to wait for the switcher window to appear and select the other window
there.

[Bug 1086471] [NEW] Alt-tab doesn't switch between windows of same application on external monitor

2012-12-04 Thread Justyn Butler
Public bug reported:

Expected behaviour:
When my laptop has no external monitor plugged in, if the two most recently
focused windows are from the same application then alt-tab will happily switch
between them without needing to wait for the application icon in the switcher
to explode into the two subwindows. It does this whether the switcher overlay
has had time to pop up or not.

Buggy behaviour on external monitor:
However, if I have an external 1920x1080 monitor plugged in (with laptop screen
off) alt-tab becomes partially stuck on the most recent window. No matter how
many times I try to alt-tab from the most recent window to the second most
recent of the same application group, it always selects the currently focused
window. It will not switch to the other window until the application icon
explodes into its component windows, at which point it will automatically
select the correct window as soon as the exploding is complete.

In this situation it will still switch to a different application
without issue.

The result is that to alt-tab between the two most recent windows, if
they happen to be of the same application, takes a few seconds because
you must wait for the sub-window explosion or invoke it via the arrow
keys.

Alt-` continues to work as expected.

On Thinkpad X220 with Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit.

[Bug 898870] Re: Grid placed window overlaps the adjacent viewport

2012-07-04 Thread Justyn Butler
One side effect of this bug (at least, I assume this bug is the cause)
is that when using alt-tab on a viewport which has a window from an
adjacent workspace intruding 2px into it, selecting the unwanted window
causes that window to fully move onto the current viewport.

My hardware setup is a single monitor plugged into an X220 laptop, with
the laptop screen disabled (but the monitor is higher resolution than
the laptop screen). I'm not sure if this qualifies as horizontal
virtual desktop size of two or more.

I have the same problem, that the context menu disappears as soon as I

I can also confirm that like guyomel above, if I open and close the

other actions that will also fix the issue but I have not yet worked
out what they are.

At this point I haven't worked out what actually induces the bug, so
it's hard to do more testing.

[Bug 715587] Re: [workspace switcher] Workspace layout not respected when using one row of workspaces

2011-09-28 Thread Justyn Butler
We still cannot do this in the current version of Unity 2D, in Oneiric

Why is it marked wishlist? Surely this is an unnecessary inconsistency
between Unity and Unity 2D. All that is required is for the shift

[Bug 768006] Re: [shortcuts] SuperShift# should launch a new instance of # application

2011-09-28 Thread Justyn Butler
I've added ayatana-design as an affected project.

My rationale is this: the supershift# shortcut to open a new
instance of the application is a part of the design of standard Unity,
and is implemented there. It is not in Unity 2D.

Either there is a problem with the design, in which case it must surely apply
to both Unity and Unity 2D together.
Or the design is sound, and the omission in Unity 2D is a bug rather than
wishlist.

2011-09-17 Thread Justyn Butler
Just tested with latest updates, still seeing this bug.
Unity workspace switcher shows 2x2 array of workspace, switching using the
keyboard shows a 1x4 array.

[Bug 392122] Re: dim display when idle only dims but doesn't restore the previous value when not idle anymore

2011-05-16 Thread Justyn Butler
Have you tried unchecking the reduce backlight brightness option in
power management?

I was seeing this problem under Ubuntu 11.04 on my 2nd-gen Core i7
laptop, that after dimming the brightness would always increase only to
50% regardless of what I had set the brightness to before.

However when I uncheck the reduce backlight brightness box for on
battery power (which automatically reduces backlight when you
disconnect from the AC supply) the dimming works as expected and
afterwards returns my brightness to whatever level it was before it
dimmed.

[Bug 747130] [NEW] Constant i915 wakeups on idle desktop (regression)

2011-04-01 Thread Justyn Butler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Using compiz 0.9.4 on Natty Beta 1, I see constant i915 wakeups when the
desktop is idling.
This occurs whether running compiz in Unity or Ubuntu Classic desktop sessions.

To test, I log in, disable wireless and open a single gnome-terminal
window, in which I run powertop, then leave alone. Nothing on the screen
is changing except powertop in the terminal.

i915 interrupt always shows between 8 - 40 wakeups per second. It
tends to hang around the 8-per-second mark, never dropping below, and
frequently increasing to around 30. Compiz itself does not show up. At
no point is there any interaction or visual change on the desktop except
in the terminal window.

I don't see this when running without compiz, in either Unity 2D or
Ubuntu Classic (no effects).

I also do not see any wakeups at all when performing exactly the same
test on Maverick (using compiz version 0.8.6), so this is a power-
sapping regression.

The machine is an Intel Atom N450 with intregrated GMA3150 gpu.

It's possible this is related to bug #681696, however in that bug it is
compiz itself that causes the wakeups rather than i915. Also apparently
that bug is fixed.

[Bug 734170] Re: Unity should have an *obvious* way to open multiple instances of applications

2011-03-31 Thread Justyn Butler
Crikey, I spent a long time trying to work out how to do this, and just
could not figure it out. I thought it might be a missing feature with
the alphas, but after just trying the beta I still couldn't do it. Very
frustrating!

So having found this bug report, I now know. Except, what do I do if I
am on a laptop with no middle click and with a crazy touchpad that
doesn't allow you to press both left+right buttons together? And what
about the many people (surely most users?) who don't know that hitting
pressing left and right together emulates middle click?

[Bug 715514] [NEW] Share this computer's inventory unknown

2011-02-08 Thread Justyn Butler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: oneconf

I have two computers with Ubuntu 10.10 installed, and am signed into
Ubuntu One.

In the Inventory on Ubuntu One dialog in USC, if I select share this
computer's inventory the status on the right shows unknown, although below
it, next to show inventories from other computers it changes to 1
registered.
But if I look at the other computer it still shows none registered next to
show inventories from other computers.

Also, where is it supposed to be showing the other computer inventories?

[Bug 554839] [NEW] Using multimedia/function keys clears xset repeat settings

2010-04-03 Thread Justyn Butler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I swap my caps lock and backspace keys using xmodmap, and I use xset to change
the repeat settings accordingly.
This all worked fine in Ubuntu 9.10.

In 10.04 beta 1, the repeat settings for caps lock and backspace are
lost whenever I use the multimedia keys or brightness keys on my
keyboard. Then I use xset again and they're fine until I touch one of
those keys again.

To repeat:
1) run
xset -r 22
xset r 66
2) observe changed repeat settings in caps lock and backspace keys
3) press multimedia buttons
4) observe repeat settings have reverted

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 9400.

[Bug 188308] Re: colemak is broken

2010-03-04 Thread Justyn Butler
Is this really a bug in xkeyboard-config, the keyboard configuration
files?

I don't think so. The layout works fine if used as the default and only
layout in gnome-keyboard-properties (except for the issue that the key
doesn't repeat).

The problem occurs if trying to switch between layouts in gnome-
keyboard-properties...the caps lock behaviour is not properly set in
this situation.

I find that if I start off with colemak as the default and switch to a
standard layout using the applet then the colemak caps lock behaviour
(as backspace) persists. If however I start off with a standard layout
and switch to colemak I get the strange bug where the caps lock key is
both caps lock and backspace at the same time.

Perhaps this is a bug in gnome-keyboard-properties.

[Bug 352732] Re: [jaunty, karmic] Sound muted after boot

2010-01-15 Thread Justyn Butler
I ran into this bug suddenly today on a standard Karmic gnome
installation that was working fine before. I've no idea what I did for
it to suddenly start happening, I didn't do an upgrade and I didn't
install xubuntu-desktop like in some other comments.

I can confirm that #38 (commenting out mute_and_zero_levels
$TARGET_CARD || EXITSTATUS=1) did not work for me.

However #77 (commenting out load-module module-device-restore in PA
config) has fixed my problem. I don't know what the other consequences
of using this fix are.

[Bug 268615] Re: X fails to start with intel 4500MHD GMA

2008-10-07 Thread Justyn Butler
I'm seeing this issue on a Sony Vaio laptop with the same graphics chipset,
Intel 4500MHD.
The model number of the laptop (in the UK at least) is VGN-SR19XN.

As Daniel describes the splash screen displays fine, then when X starts
you see nothing but a blank screen.

X has started though and you can hear the Ubuntu desktop startup sound.

You can see that apart from this little (!) issue the driver is working
fine by plugging in an external monitor (in Ubuntu 8.10 Beta). Even the
desktop effects work beautifully. But the laptop screen is completely
black.

I have tried with Ubuntu 8.04.1 and 8.10 Beta live CDs. 8.10 Beta uses
xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu6.

I've included my Xorg.0.log from booting 8.10 Beta. I can't see anything
glaringly obvious in it.

2008-10-07 Thread Justyn Butler
Both Daniel's problem and mine are a manifestation of the xorg bug here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17292

It appears to be a quirk affecting a particular model of Sony Vaio
laptop that has the Intel Cantiga integrated graphics.

From this bug report and the upstream one, it seems that at least the
following models of Sony laptop are affected
* VGN-SR140D
* VGN-SR19XN
* VGN-SR11M

As far as I can see these are simply international variants of exactly
the same model of laptop.

[Bug 220283] Re: Gnome volume OSD displays incorrectly

2008-10-05 Thread Justyn Butler
I have the same issue with Hardy, and now with my Intrepid Ibex Beta
install.

In my case the volume OSD displays correctly most of the time, but
sometimes will appear blank. So it is less severe for me but I suspect
the same bug.

If I gradually increase the volume from low to high with the multimedia
buttons on my Dell Inspiron the volume OSD level will increase also. But
at some point along the way it will show a level of 0, but the audio
will still be playing at the correct level. When I increase the volume
again the bar pops back to the correct level.

I've attached a screenshot that also contains the volume control showing
what level the volume is really at.

[Bug 274155] Re: Intrepid: quiet splash freezes but verbose boots up fine

2008-10-04 Thread Justyn Butler
I have identical symptoms with Intrepid Beta.

The boot almost always stops at 1/5 through progress bar. It does not
recover from this and I have to hold the power button on my laptop.

I was convinced that it did it every time but once I did enough boots I
discovered that occasionally it will make it through booting fine on
it's own.

When I remove the quiet splash kernel option it boots fine most times
- there appears to be a positive effect in removing these options.

But in my case at least, that is not the whole story, because if I keep
rebooting it will occasionally fail in apparently the same manner
(though there is no progress bar of course the timing, CPU and HDD
activity dying down are the same). In these situations it normally does
so at loading hardware drivers exactly as Pajari and Guo Xi have
stated above.

In the same vein it will also sometimes fail when booting into recovery mode
(which has no splash screen anyway).
When booting into recovery mode the failure instead seems to occur after the
line:
 iwl3945: Tunable channels: 13 802.11bg, 23 802.11a channels

It took many boots to discover that the quiet splash fix did not fix
the problem 100% of the time, but I wonder if that fix is a red herring.

My hardware is a Dell Inspiron 9400. It has Intel 3945ABG wireless using
iwl3945 driver, Intel 945GM graphics, and Intel Core Duo CPU.

[Bug 189387] Re: imap refresh don't refresh new folder

2008-09-11 Thread Justyn Butler
I have also just noticed this bug in Hardy Heron.

With Evolution closed, I create new IMAP folders (using Thunderbird,
which I then close).

Afterwards, when I open Evolution for the first time the folders are not
there in the sidebar. Refreshing any of the visible folders or
sending/receiving mail does not make a difference.

Once I close the program and then open Evolution a second time the
folders are there.

Notes on subscriptions:
Whether or not show only subscribed folders is ticked makes no difference,
the new folders still do not show up in the sidebar.
However in the folder subscriptions window any the new folders are listed (and
ticked!) even if this is the first time I have opened Evolution since creating
the folder and therefore it is not visible in the side pane.

[Bug 156824] Re: [Hardy] closing lid breaks X (jumping cursor, sluggish, high cpu usage ... )

2008-09-06 Thread Justyn Butler
I have the same issue as the poster above, Jonathan Prior.

I experience the jittery mouse and almost unresponsive machine for
around 10 seconds after opening the lid of my laptop, after which the
problem goes away.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 with Intel 945GM graphics.

I have tested on Hardy and Intrepid Alpha 5.
