[Bug 1878091] [NEW] Non-fractional scaling not working

2020-05-11 Thread Rene Lindsay
Public bug reported:

My laptop has a 4K display.
Default Resolution = 3840x2160, scale = 200%.
If I set resolution to 1920x1080, everything on the desktop is scaled to double
size.
So, if I reduce the Scale setting from 200% to 100%, I would expect everything
to look normal again, but it does not. 100% and 200% look identical.
However, if I enable Fractional scaling and select 125%, that looks correct.
So, Fractional scaling works correctly, but non-fractional scaling does not.

[Bug 1735986] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 on Wayland doesn't scale some applications properly on external low DPI display

2018-01-10 Thread Lindsay Gaines
I just installed a fresh install of Ubuntu artful (17.10) yesterday, on
a Dell XPS 13 9630, and am affected by the same issue.

My laptop has a HiDPI built-in display with a resolution of 3200x1800,
and I also connect an external ASUS monitor at work, which has a
resolution of 1920x1080.

The laptop has an integrated Intel graphics card, and the external
display is connected via a USB Type-C hub that has an HDMI output.

The display arrangement was set correctly when I plugged in the external
monitor, except for the positioning of the external display, which I
adjusted.

* Built-in display:
** Resolution: 3200x1800
** Scale: 200%
* External display:
** Resolution: 1920x1080
** Scale: Not shown, but set to 100%

Moving native apps like terminal, settings windows, file explorer across
monitors correctly scales them based on the scale setting of each
monitor. However:

* Chrome, Firefox, PHPstorm (IntelliJ) are always scaled to 200% on both
monitors
* Moving these windows between monitors does not adjust their scaling
* Maximising a window on the external display does not adjust its scaling

Not sure what commands / log files might be helpful here but I'd be
happy to run any kind of diagnostic necessary.

Thanks for opening this bug.
Lindsay

[Bug 1631706] [NEW] radvd v2.11 doesn't honor MinRtrAdvInterval and MaxRtrAdvInterval

2016-10-09 Thread Lindsay
Public bug reported:

radvd v2.11, distributed with Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS, does not honor
MinRtrAdvInterval and sends out router advertisements every second
regardless of this setting. This bug has been reported elsewhere. See
. Supposedly this
is fixed in v2.13, according to the RH bug which was filed in Jan, 2016.

Can the updated version be pushed to Ubuntu server 16.04 LTS?

[Bug 1577494] Re: application dies with 'VMware: vmw_ioctl_command error Invalid argument.'

2016-08-14 Thread Lindsay
I'm seeing the same error when trying to open a contact in the Evolution
groupware suite. The full error is:

openjdk version "1.8.0_91"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_91-8u91-b14-3ubuntu1~16.04.1-b14)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.91-b14, mixed mode)
VMware: vmw_ioctl_command error Invalid argument.
Aborted

Looks like a Java error from this perspective. I don't exactly know
where to report this, here, VMware or OpenJDK.

[Bug 1547770] Re: Vinagre / Remote Desktop Viewer won't exit full screen when launched from command line

2016-07-10 Thread Lindsay
Here are a couple of workarounds:

>From the View menu in vinagre, enable "Keyboard Shortcuts". The F11 key
will now toggle in and out of full screne mode. This had the
disadvantage that some keystrokes or keystroke combinations aren't
passed on to the remote desktop, which is usually the desired behavior

Hover your mouse pointer a few pixels below the top of the screen and
move it slowly left and right over the area where the menu usually
appears. Tooltips will pop out belonging to the buttons which should be
displayed. Left-click when you see "Leave fullscreen".

[Bug 996906] Re: periodic audio skips with Intel HDA

2014-07-17 Thread Charles Lindsay
New sound card, same issue. Asus Xonar DX. Shows up in lspci like
'C-Media Electronics Inc CMI8788 [Oxygen HD Audio]'. Uses the
snd_virtuoso driver. The snd_hda_intel module isn't even loaded. The
skips have slightly changed character with the new card, but they still
happen. And still, when I use bare Alsa, the issue goes away. Looks
like the bug is somewhere in how pulse interacts with my machine in
general, not just the sound card/driver.

Raymond: I don't know. I haven't set any latency myself. Is there
something else I can try?

[Bug 996906] Re: periodic audio skips with Intel HDA

2014-07-11 Thread Charles Lindsay
I finally upgraded to 14.04; same exact issue.

One coincidence I noticed and am looking into is that I didn't notice
any stuttering when only 64 bit code was running, but when flash or
steam were running (both of which run some 32 bit code, if I'm not
mistaken), the stuttering began immediately. I'm not 100% sure that's
the only time it stutters now, but it's happened enough times that I'm
not sure it's just coincidence. Does that ring any bells for anyone?

I'm sick and tired of this issue. Ubuntu has moved on from Alsa, and
I'd like to too. I might get a (hopefully cheap) sound card to test out
if that can fix the issue.

the lp:shotwell branch from ~eric-yorba/shotwell/trunk to
~yorba/shotwell/trunk? We couldn't figure out a way to do this
ourselves, and it won't let me delete his branch or create a new import

2013-11-27 Thread Charles Lindsay
Thanks, Sebastien. I'll make sure our daily build recipes are using
that branch.

Also, I should mention that our tarballs have moved:
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/shotwell/. The old location has
the same tarballs for now, but new tarballs will only appear on
gnome.org.

I think you guys can close this ticket whenever you like, then. When
Jim's back from vacation, we'll try to sort out his admin privileges.
Thanks!

[Bug 1254923] Re: Source repo has moved

2013-11-26 Thread Charles Lindsay
Sebastien, there are two reasons for this ticket:

1) To make sure Ubuntu has the correct upstream for its packaging (just FYI)
2) To see about getting an updated import branch for shotwell, so we can use it
in our daily build and anywhere else

On 2), I just found the launchpad help docs for import branches
(https://help.launchpad.net/Code/Imports) which seems to suggest that
maybe the best solution here is to request a new import branch with the
new git URL, and once that's set up, move our recipes and anything else
to point to the new branch. If that sounds right to you, I'll open a
request at https://code.launchpad.net/+code-imports/+new and you can
close this bug whenever you feel adequately notified about the repo URL
change.

By the way, Jim didn't think he was an admin on the Shotwell project,
and neither am I. How do we become admins? Do we simply contact the
project creator? I also would like to become an admin of gexiv2 and
Valencia.

[Bug 993728] Re: /dev/dvd disappears when a DVD is inserted

2013-11-09 Thread Charles Lindsay
I just re-tested this (now on udev 175-0ubuntu9.4), and the problem is
gone. I guess we can say this bug is fixed, at least for me, under the
conditions for which I opened it. Not sure whether it was a udev change
or something else. Oh well.

Interesting take-away from bug 926976 is that /dev/dvd's days are
numbered. Sounds like it won't be available in future versions.

[Bug 1188131] Re: lightdm does not start on boot since change to use plymouth-ready (precise)

2013-07-11 Thread Lindsay
I can confirm Tomasz Miąsko's observation. I changed the startup stanza
in lightdm.conf to:

start on ((filesystem
   and runlevel [!06]
   and started dbus
   and (drm-device-added card0 PRIMARY_DEVICE_FOR_DISPLAY=1
or stopped udev-fallback-graphics))
   or runlevel PREVLEVEL=S)

and lightdm starts as expected.

See these pages:

It looks as if changes to lightdm.conf have outstripped changes to

[Bug 1188131] Re: lightdm does not start on boot

2013-06-06 Thread Lindsay
I can confirm this bug, but have tried several stored kernels going back
to 3.2.0-29-generic and the problem doesn't seem to be related to the
kernel version. I note that a new version of lightdm came out several
days ago and perhaps the problem is there.

As a fairly acceptable workaround for this problem, enable /etc/rc.local
and add the following lines to it:

/sbin/start lightdm
exit $?

[Bug 1174368] [NEW] Ubuntu 13.04 External Monitor problem

2013-04-29 Thread Lindsay Parker
Public bug reported:

I am having issues with the new Ubuntu 13.04 upgrade. I upgraded this
weekend at home and had no issues, but when I got to work this morning
and tried to setup my laptop with an external monitor, like I have used
with Ubuntu 12.10, the both screens are displayed; however, the Launcher
sidebar is missing on both monitors and I have no choice but to shutdown
the laptop and use only the laptop display. This is an obvious bug in

[Bug 1169280] Re: Geary crashes after ~1mn activity

2013-04-15 Thread Charles Lindsay
Interesting, I don't think we've ever seen this with gmail before! I'm
not the IMAP expert here, so it's hard for me to say why your sent mail
would be triggering this reliably.

If you remove all other accounts from Geary, I assume it still happens?
Could you please remove the other accounts, then run geary with --log-
network as well, and capture its log output:

geary --debug --log-network geary.log

And attach that log to this (or the redmine) ticket, or if you're
concerned about private information in it (it does list your account
email address and folder names, for example), send it to ge...@yorba.org
for us to examine? A full network trace might help us figure out what's
going on.

I could not for the life of me understand how to register to
submit/comment.

No worries, we try to keep up with launchpad bugs too. For the record,
there's a tiny register link the very top right hand corner of redmine
that takes you to: http://redmine.yorba.org/account/register.

Anyway, thanks for your help!

[Bug 1169280] Re: Geary crashes after ~1mn activity

2013-04-15 Thread Charles Lindsay
I'll pursue here as the discussion has already started here

That's no problem. I'll attach your log to our redmine ticket as well,
just so when we start looking into this, we have fewer clicks to get
everything we need. :)

It makes sense that it's only the one account with the issue. UID
validity is something specific to an account (even a specific folder in
an account, I believe), but I was just confirming 100% and simplifying
the repro case.

I think your log is all the debugging help we need for now. I
appreciate your offer to let us access your account -- we may take you
up on that in the future if we run into issues debugging from the log.
We'll let you know if it comes to that.

We're glad you're enjoying Geary! Thanks for all your help with this
issue.

[Bug 1169280] Re: Geary crashes after ~1mn activity

2013-04-15 Thread Charles Lindsay
I think I see the problem: you have one IMAP folder named [GMail] and
one named [Gmail] (note the different case on the M). Not sure how that
would happen. In my gmail account, [Gmail] with lower m is the name for
that folder. I'm also not sure how you'd rectify the situation without
risking deleting your real sent mail folder.

Do these two folders show up separately in gmail's web interface, or are
there any duplicately named labels or anything weird like that?

So, I think the bug you're actually running into is that Geary is
treating these two folders as the same, when it shouldn't be. I've
ticketed that in http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/6821.

[Bug 1077105] Re: amrecover - can't talk to tape server: service amidxtaped:

2013-03-17 Thread Lindsay
Yes, this fix is essentially the the same as the one posted on
old.nabble.com. According to this bug, the problem is due to newer
versions of perl enforcing stricter syntax conformity which exposes the
program sloppiness to which the programmer is probably referring.

Thanks for posting the workaround, which will help until this is fixed
in an officially distributed release of amanda, either by Ubuntu, or
upstream, and the fix is backported to 12.04 LTS - which it should be.
System administrators obviously shouldn't have to patch up a poorly
written perl script in order to have a fully functional amanda for a
task as critical as backup/restore, much less go out and research the
bug when an amanda restore fails and they need to get lost data back
online in a hurry. The boss will NOT be happy!

I fixed this bug because I could. I grok perl well enough that I could,
once I found the solution. Not every system administrator is as
fortunate, nor should he or she need to be :)

One way or another, Canonical/Ubuntu needs to get this fix into a Stable
Release Upgrade process for 12.04 LTS. Rocket science this ain't.

[Bug 1077105] Re: amrecover - can't talk to tape server: service amidxtaped:

2013-03-09 Thread Lindsay
This is a perl issue, and a fix has been available since June of 2011.
See http://old.nabble.com/amrecover---can%27t-talk-to-tape-server%3A-
service-amidxtaped%3A-td31861008.html where patches for this problem are
posted. This problem is related to Bug #1056641 which deals with the
perl issue, but doesn't provide a fix.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on two different servers and have applied
the patches from the above URL and can attest to the fact that they do
indeed fix the problem. I'm attaching the relevant patches since I
haven't seen them posted on Ubuntu Launchpad in relation to this
problem. Since these were drawn from a copy and paste from the Nabble
website, you'll have to dissect this diff and apply each patch with -l.

I'm running an LTS version of Ubuntu with the understanding that
problems of this sort will be addressed as fixes become available for
the next 4+ years. Since backup and restore are mission critical
administrative tasks for servers used in business environments, I would
hope that this matter would be given some priority attention. My guess
is that this may not have been a problem in the original release of
12.04 and that an upgrade to perl during the past year may have caused
this bug to surface. The problem is especially nasty since there's no
problem making backups with amanda as it's distributed, but it fails
when the backups are needed in a hurry to restore lost data.

** Patch added: Patches for several perl modules in amanda

[Bug 1074574] Re: known issue: amrecover - can't talk to tape server: service amidxtaped:

2013-03-09 Thread Lindsay
The fix for this bug should be bacported ASAP to precise (12.04 LTS)
since it renders amanda useless as a functional backup package. The bug
only shows up when amanda is needed most - when data has been lost and
needs to be restored from backups, which is unacceptable for a LTS
release used in production and enterprise environments. The SRU
Procedure referred to by logan is very obscure and the page he links to
is long on what and when, and short on exactly how to get this process
going. Perhaps one of the Ubuntu team would be kind enough to undertake
to escalate Bug #1077105 (which provides a fix) accordingly and put the
fix into consideration for backporting to the LTS version.

[Bug 1077105] Re: amrecover - can't talk to tape server: service amidxtaped:

2013-03-09 Thread Lindsay
My understanding is that this bug has already been squashed in Raring
Ringtail (see bug #1074574), so it's a known issue with a known fix
going forward. My concern is that it hasn't been backported to Precise
Pangolian (12.04 LTS). LTS versions of Ubuntu are the ones used in
production environments, on mission-critical servers, where the
maintenance of a rock solid backup and restore system is a basic system
administration duty. The procedure for getting a bug on a released
version of Ubuntu onto the SRU track is not well documented online
(which is probably a bug in itself) and I ended up emailing one of the
SRU team administrators about it in the hope of moving it in that
direction.

I've already fixed this bug on my servers, so the patch is as much as
anything for the convenience of others who may be having the same
problem in Precise. My concern is that someone installing the lastest
LTS version of Ubuntu Server shouldn't have to deal with a disabling bug
in a major backup and restore suite for which a fix was available a year
and a half ago and which is already fixed in the latest non-LTS
releases.

And I'll reiterate that when I simply uninstall pulse, but use the same
hardware with alsa, the audio doesn't skip. I don't think it's accurate
to say it's purely the hda driver.

2012-10-18 Thread Mike Lindsay
Chrome been working fine for a few months now. I come in this morning,
my computer is shut off, implying a power event. I turn it back on,
everything seems to come up normally. I get to chrome start surfing my
morning rituals, and chrome just goes away. This is on ubuntu 12.04 x64
running chrome Version 22.0.1229.94. I played around with it a bit, and
it did it aboue 3 times in the course of 5 minutes. It seemed to happen
anytime I clicked a link. I haven't noticed if it was related to tab
behavior or not as previous posters have said.

[Bug 996906] Re: periodic audio skips with Intel HDA

2012-10-16 Thread Charles Lindsay
Like I said above, mine now skips much less frequently than every 10
minutes, so I'm skeptical about tweaking any pulse configs at this
point. And since all I did to have it skip less frequently was re-
install pulseaudio and update to all the latest precise packages, it
seems like the issue is somewhere in the interaction between pulse and
the kernel or hardware or the system in general.

If there's a way I can test using the wakeup_rt tracer I'm happy to do
so. Is there any documentation I can read about doing so? A quick
google search turned up nothing I could decipher.

[Bug 996906] Re: periodic audio skips with Intel HDA

2012-10-16 Thread Charles Lindsay
Results: using options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 in /etc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base.conf didn't make the problem go away. Using position_fix=2
made the problem actively worse: the audio literally didn't do anything
but skip. Using load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0 in
/etc/pulse/default.pa made flash videos unplayable (not just the audio,
but the video would stutter as well). In short, none of those fixes
solved my problem.

Any other ideas?

[Bug 996906] Re: periodic audio skips with Intel HDA

2012-10-15 Thread Charles Lindsay
I've been trying to reproduce this issue for the last couple weeks, and
I'm somewhat happy to say it happens much, much less frequently now.
Unfortunately, it still happens. It's now on the order of once every
few hours on average instead of once every few minutes, but much less
regularly -- only one afternoon has it happened more than once as I've
been listening to music, and that afternoon it happened 3 or 4 times.
I'm on pulseaudio 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.1 and kernel 3.2.0-32-generic now.

Anyway, that's made it much harder to test any fixes. Now that I've got
a bit better idea of how it behaves lately, I'll turn off timer
scheduling and report back after some time. I'm assuming the
position_fix hack won't do anything, since my audio is 100% fine under
alsa.

[Bug 1050138] [NEW] Trying to connect to server with SSH

2012-09-12 Thread Lindsay Feuling
Public bug reported:

System info:
Description:Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
Release:12.04

From the Ubuntu File menu, I choose Connect to Server

I fill out the proper server address, and choose the type as SSH from the
selection list.
I fill out my folder name properly as well as the user name and password.

Then when I try to connect, I get the error message:

Failed to execute child process /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-sftp (no such
file or directory)

Big bummer, because it worked in 11.10 before, but since I recently
updated to 12.04, it does NOT!

I also noticed, that in the folder /usr/lib/gvfs that there is no
gvfsd-sftp, nor even gvfsd-ftp.

[Bug 993728] Re: /dev/dvd disappears when a DVD is inserted

2012-07-10 Thread Charles Lindsay
Interestingly, my 70-persistent-cd.rules exists, it's just effectively
empty:

$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules
# This file maintains persistent names for CD/DVD reader and writer devices.
# See udev(7) for syntax.
#
# Entries are automatically added by the 75-cd-aliases-generator.rules
# file; however you are also free to add your own entries provided you
# add the ENV{GENERATED}=1 flag to your own rules as well.

I wonder if Ubuntu didn't properly detect something when it was
installing itself? For reference, here's the pertinent output of some
of the commands you mention, from my machine:

$ sudo lshw -C disk
...
  *-cdrom
   description: DVD-RAM writer
   product: BD-RE WH10LS30
   vendor: HL-DT-ST
   physical id: 0.0.0
   bus info: scsi@3:0.0.0
   logical name: /dev/sr0
   version: 1.00
   capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram
   configuration: ansiversion=5 status=nodisc

$ ls /dev/disk/by-path/
... pci-:00:11.0-scsi-3:0:0:0

$ ls -Al /dev/disk/by-id/
...
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Jul 9 23:38 ata-HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_WH10LS30_K97A3NA2854
- ../../sr0

Does any of that matter? I doubt it. I'd have to check specifically,
but I'm fairly certain I get the same problem on all other machines I
use.

[Bug 996906]

2012-05-14 Thread Charles Lindsay
I tried bumping default-fragment-size-msec up to 1000 and then 1.
It continues to skip.

Regarding latency, when default-fragment-size-msec was 1, I
noticed a line saying

( 124.922| 0.000) D: [alsa-sink] sink.c: latency = 1339

in the log during a skip. After the music was done skipping, I noticed
this:

( 155.288| 0.000) D: [alsa-sink] alsa-sink.c: Latency set to 20.00ms

Not sure which one to believe for latency.

Anyway, the problem persists regardless of the default-fragment-size-
msec config setting.

[Bug 996906] [NEW] periodic audio skips with Intel HDA

2012-05-08 Thread Charles Lindsay
Public bug reported:

When running PulseAudio, if I'm playing music via any source (Exaile, Totem,
Flash in Firefox or Chromium, VLC, etc.) every few minutes the audio will skip
once or twice. top doesn't show any process eating CPU any more when it
happens. dmesg doesn't show anything. Nothing else seems to be affected. It
doesn't seem to happen regularly.

I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 from scratch (with pulseaudio 1:1.1-0ubuntu15),
but the same thing happened in 10.04 on the same hardware. Uninstalling the
PulseAudio packages and going back to ALSA gives me no issues whatsoever, which
is how I know the issue is with PulseAudio. I'm using my onboard audio device:

$ lspci | grep Audio
00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel
HDA)

Following mailing list instructions, pulseaudio - --log-time shows during a
skip:

...and it goes on.

The Underrun! messages alone happened a few times before, but it
didn't skip.

I'd like to use PulseAudio, but it's pretty annoying having audio skip all the
time.

[Bug 993728] [NEW] /dev/dvd disappears when a DVD is inserted

2012-05-02 Thread Charles Lindsay
Public bug reported:

On a fresh boot, with no DVD inserted:

$ ls -Al /dev/dvd
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 May 2 18:25 /dev/dvd - sr0

As soon as I insert a DVD:

$ ls -l /dev/dvd
ls: cannot access /dev/dvd: No such file or directory

The only new lines in dmesg are:

[ 88.411709] UDF-fs: Partition marked readonly; forcing readonly mount
[ 88.472834] UDF-fs: INFO Mounting volume 'WILLIAM_CASTLE_FILM_COLLECTION',
timestamp 2009/08/19 19:32 (1e5c)

This is on a fully updated install of Ubuntu 12.04, with udev
175-0ubuntu9.

I don't want /dev/dvd to stop existing exactly when I need to use it.

[Bug 893199] Re: Dictionary Look Up Applet missing in Oneiric

2012-04-16 Thread Lindsay
If the applet has indeed gone away, perhaps it would be appropriate and
possible for the Ubuntu maintainers to drop the statement from the
gnome-dictionary package stating that one of the package components is
the missing applet. This is a documentation bug and should perhaps be
re-assigned accordingly. Documentation that's free from this sort of
error is more than just a wishlist thing.

[Bug 945932] Re: Atheros USB bluetooth adapter not detected in Ubuntu 12.04

2012-04-16 Thread Charles Lindsay
Some news: a recent update mostly hosed my 12.04 system. (For the
record, I had installed anew on an empty partition, not upgraded.) I
just did a full update and am happy to report that hcitool dev reports
the same thing that it did in xubuntu.

This means as far as I'm concerned, this bug is resolved. Not sure if
the linux-firmware package was just affected by bug #714862, or wasn't
installed or what. My installed version of linux-firmware is 1.79.

Note that my 12.04 system is hosed enough that I can't actually test
that the adapter works correctly, but I'm guessing that since hcitool
dev is reporting it (and lsusb no longer says no firmware) that it's
all gravy.

I'll leave this ticket open because I don't know if anything else needs
to happen on your end. Thanks!

2012-03-09 Thread Charles Lindsay
I did notice that if I boot to xubuntu, then restart (without powering
off) into ubuntu, ubuntu then detects it and it works fine. I guess
that's consistent with the firmware being loaded by xubuntu but not
ubuntu?

[Bug 945932] Re: Atheros USB bluetooth adapter not detected in 12.04 beta 1

2012-03-07 Thread Charles Lindsay
A clue: lsusb in stock ubuntu 12.04 now seems to indicate it has no
firmware for the adapter:

Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0cf3:3000 Atheros Communications, Inc. AR3011
Bluetooth (no firmware)

(I don't remember if my first lsusb output was from 12.04 or 10.04 where
it was working.)

Could this just be that a required package isn't being installed by
default? If so, which one, and why does xubuntu install it by default?

[Bug 945932] Re: Atheros USB bluetooth adapter not detected in 12.04 beta 1

2012-03-06 Thread Charles Lindsay
Freshly updated all packages; same issue. As I said in the report, the
adapter isn't detected at all. In the bluetooth manager tool it simply
says No Bluetooth adapters found. Running 'sudo hcitool dev' comes
back with a line that just says Devices:. I also noticed that the
next line after the above dmesg output is this (not sure if it's
relevant):

[ 17.296954] usbcore: registered new interface driver ath3k

I'll update my xubuntu install later and give relevant dmesg output
there for comparison.

[Bug 945932] [NEW] Atheros USB bluetooth adapter not detected in 12.04 beta 1

2012-03-03 Thread Charles Lindsay
Public bug reported:

Just installed 12.04 beta 1 on a spare partition, and noticed that my
bluetooth adapter (that works flawlessly in 10.04) isn't being detected.
Here's some potentially relevant dmesg output in 12.04 beta 1:

[ 22.243497] Bluetooth: Core ver 2.16
[ 22.243517] Bluetooth: HCI device and connection manager initialized
[ 22.243519] Bluetooth: HCI socket layer initialized

[ 22.391766] Bluetooth: BNEP (Ethernet Emulation) ver 1.3
[ 22.391769] Bluetooth: BNEP filters: protocol multicast
[ 22.433758] Bluetooth: RFCOMM TTY layer initialized
[ 22.433763] Bluetooth: RFCOMM socket layer initialized
[ 22.433764] Bluetooth: RFCOMM ver 1.11
[ 27.268814] Bluetooth: Can't change to loading configuration err
[ 27.268837] ath3k: probe of 3-2:1.0 failed with error -110

I'll note that on xubuntu 12.04 beta 1, there is no issue; the adapter
is found and functions correctly.

Here is I believe the relevant line from lsusb:

Bus 003 Device 003: ID 0cf3:3002 Atheros Communications, Inc.

[Bug 893199] [NEW] Dictionary Look Up Applet missing in Oneiric

2011-11-21 Thread Lindsay
Public bug reported:

The dictionary look up applet seems to be totally missing in 11.10!
This was one of my most-used utilities. The package description for
gnome-dictionary says that the applet is included it it, but I can find
nothing relating to the applet in the listing of the package contents.
What happened??? I certainly hope an executive decision wasn't made to
deep-six this applet, which has been one of my favorites for many years.

[Bug 823878] Re: bind interfaces only requires a manual change to /etc/init/smbd.conf

2011-10-09 Thread camden lindsay
To be clear and recap--

smb.conf has the following
interfaces = eth0

Static IP was assigned via network manager.

smbd would not start up-- as per
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/836849
(open_socket_smbd fail)

As per this bug (the one i am currently updating), i edited the startup in
/etc/init/smbd.conf to be the following
start on (local-filesystems and net-device-up IFACE=eth0)

smbd started without a problem, but nmbd no longer started at boot.

Following the debug tips in the bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/samba/+bug/596064
I identified that nmbd was not starting because /var/run/samba did not exist.
I added 'mkdir -p /var/run/samba' to the pre-start script of
/etc/init/nmbd.conf as suggested by bug 596064, and now everything starts up
as expected.

hope this explains it..

[Bug 836849] Re: Samba starts before static IPs set in network manager

2011-09-03 Thread camden lindsay
Okay, let me see if i can touch on all of your points here.

I do not have IFACE=eth0 in the start on' clause of /etc/init/smb.conf

However, i do have the following line in /etc/samba/smb.conf, and it does not
'just work' as you indicate it should, unfortunately. :(
interfaces = eth0

Note that this bug is the same as

Attached are single startup /var/log/samba/log.smbd, /var/log/samba/log.nmbd,

[Bug 836849] [NEW] Samba starts before static IPs set in network manager

2011-08-29 Thread camden lindsay
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS
Release:10.04

Expect that samba will start up provided the interface assigned in it's

Instead, Samba starts before the network manager manages to set up the static
IP address on the machine.

[Bug 419143] Re: Printing from evince (and perhaps other GTK apps) to PostScript printers is broken (0a bytes inserted into PostScript output)

2011-08-13 Thread Lindsay
I'm also seeing this in Ubuntu Natty (11.04) when printing _some_ pages
from Firefox to a Brother HL-5250DN. Other pages work OK. This may or
may not be related to a long-standing problem with this printer whereby
the 2nd and subsequent jobs sent to the printer without a printer power-
cycle or printer reset will result in garbled text.

[Bug 817153] Re: Adaptec AHA-2940 PCI card not seen by kernel

2011-08-04 Thread Lindsay
It turns out that this is a linux kernel issue, specific to the Intel
DP43BF mainboard, and perhaps some others. The problem affects the
entire PCI bus (but not PCIe devices). No device plugged into a
standard PCI slot is detected by the kernel unless pci=assign-busses is
passed to the kernel by the boot loader. see
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18412

This is at least partially an Intel problem, but the Linux kernel should
be able to detect this issue and work around it, as Windows does.

I have marked this bug INVALID since it's an upstream issue, and kernel
developers have been aware of it for the better part of a year.

[Bug 817153] [NEW] Adaptec AHA-2940 PCI card not seen by kernel

2011-07-27 Thread Lindsay
Public bug reported:

I have a venerable AHA-2940 SCSI adapter which works well on an older
Linux box running Gentoo Linux, however the card doesn't even show up in
the list of installed PCI devices on a new box running Ubuntu 11.04,
kernel 2.6.38-10-generic-pae, and installing the aic7xxx and sg modules
required to gain functional access to the connected (even more
venerable) HP flatbed scanner (the main reason for keeping the card)
doesn't help. The card is recognized during the BIOS detection of
peripheral devices, and I can access the card's internal menu at this
time via hotkey, but once Linux is started the card might as well not be
there. Perhaps this is a support issue, but the card should show up
with lspci, or in the appropriate /proc/* locations automatically,
immediately after boot, so I'm reporting this as a bug.

[Bug 813258] Re: Installing update for google-chrome-beta powers off my laptop

2011-07-25 Thread Ryan Lindsay
Yes still having this problem
If I try just with the cli doing and apt-get it gets to downloading about 15%
of the package then the whole system locks up. Only way back is a hard reboot

[Bug 813258] Re: Installing update for google-chrome-beta powers off my laptop

2011-07-25 Thread Ryan Lindsay
Havent noticed it crash randomly on it's own.
It's actually more the one specific packages, the google-chrome-beta package.
If I run update manager, but un-select that one to update it works fine.
Similarly it's only if I specifically choose the chrome package to install from
the command line it crashes.

[Bug 813258] [NEW] Installing update for google-chrome-beta powers off my laptop

2011-07-19 Thread Ryan Lindsay
Public bug reported:

I have installed google-chrome-beta on my machine and registered the google
update page as a provider. When the update manager runs it shows an update for
the chrome beta package. Then and only when I select to install that package,
it gets a little bit through downloading the files and then my laptop just
powers off. The laptop has generally very good power, it's running from mains
while this happens.
