[Bug 1766648] [NEW] baloo_file crashes after some time in Ubuntu Bionic

2018-04-24 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
Public bug reported:

After some time of use, baloo_file crashes; after this happens, baloo
has to be started again manually, but modifying any file leads to the
same crash. The only way of making it work again is to "disable" it and
then "enable" it, so that the index is completely recreated... thus the
problem could be the index gets easily corrupted?

Application: baloo_file (5.44.0)

Qt Version: 5.9.5
Frameworks Version: 5.44.0
Operating System: Linux 4.15.0-19-generic x86_64
Distribution: Ubuntu Bionic Beaver (development branch)

[Bug 1522922] Re: Screen flickering in Intel i915 driver

2016-01-29 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
In http://www.lorenzobettini.it/2015/12/flickering-for-intel-graphic-
card-in-linux-4-2/ I described the steps to revert the two commits that
seem to have introduced the flickering. This requires downloading the
kernel sources, revert the two commits, compile the kernel and install
the locally built packages.

This bug is particularly annoying, and each time a new upgrade on the
kernel is released the above procedure has to be performed again.

Not to mention that this bug makes the system unusable (if the above
procedure is not performed).

I think that the "importance" should be brought back to "Critical"
(assuming that "Critical" is higher than "High").

[Bug 1522922] [NEW] Screen flickering in Intel i915 driver

2015-12-04 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
Public bug reported:

There's an upstream bug reported here
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91393 that causes screen
flickering when using the Intel i915 builtin driver (at resolutions
lower than the maximal one).

I think that it will be fixed in newer kernel versions, but for the time
being, as reported here
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91393#c25 (and as
personally tested) reverting those two commits fixes the problem.

Would that be possible to release a fixed version for the 4.2.0 stream?

[Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-11-09 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
I'm experiencing a similar problem after upgrade to Kubuntu Wily, though
in my case I have flickering when setting a lower resolution
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plasma-desktop/+bug/1514167).
The flickering makes the system quite unusable. I also tried to set the
UXA acceleration but that does not help (it actually makes things even
worse: slower and flickering does not go away).

The problem is with the current kernel

4.2.0-17-generic #21-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 23 19:56:16 UTC 2015 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Switching to the old kernel on boot SOLVES the problem of flickering and
things are usable again:

3.19.0-32-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 21 10:23:06 UTC 2015 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This is my card:

[Bug 1514167] [NEW] Plasma screen flickering on lower resolutions after upgrade to Kubuntu 15.10

2015-11-08 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
Public bug reported:

On my laptop, Dell m3800, the default resolution 3200x1800 makes
everything unreadable, so I need to keep the resolution lower, i.e.,
1920x1080. Everything worked fine in Kubuntu 15.04. After the upgrade to
Kubuntu 15.10, if I turn the resolution to 1920x1080 (or any lower
resolution than the default one), the screen starts to flickering often
(with the default resolution 3200x1800 this does not happen).

I tried to turn off compositing, using Xrender, etc. nothing seems to
work.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=343673 which seems to have been
solved in KDE, but probably not ported to Kubuntu yet.

Dolphin is fine when the first file is opened with Kate. The issue
happens only when you try to open an additional file. Closing the tab or
Kate unfreezes dolphin but launches the KDEINIT error popup: KDEInit
could not launch /usr/bin/kate.

[Bug 1449029] Re: KDEInit could not launch /usr/bin/kate

2015-04-27 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
Steps to reproduce:

- open Dolphin
- click on a text file (Kate will open it)
- click on another text file (Kate will open it in a new tab)
- Go back to Dolphin, and Dolphin is freezed
- close Kate: the error popup will show, and Dolphin can be used again

[Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty

2012-03-16 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
my laptop does not seem to support ASPM:

dmesg | grep ASP
[0.963968] ACPI FADT declares the system doesn't support PCIe ASPM, so
disable it

but it looks like it supports epb:

dmesg | grep ENE
[0.000241] ENERGY_PERF_BIAS: Set to 'normal', was 'performance'

so what could I do to reduce power consumption? with Linux battery lasts
less than 2 hours, in windows lasts almost 5 hours!

[Bug 346298] [NEW] Jaunty alpha6 installer can only install on the MBR of a device

2009-03-21 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
Public bug reported:

At the end of the installation process (Step 7 of 7) of Jaunty Alpha 6,
when clicking on the Advanced button, the boot loader installation
option does not leave much of a choice: either you install the boot
loader on a device or you don't install it. I don't want to install the
boot loader on the MBR since this would overwrite the current boot
loader; in previous versions of ubuntu installations you were allowed to
specify the full grub device specification, e.g., you could do (hd0,4)
meaning to install the bootloader on the first sector of /dev/sda5...

This possibility is crucial if you have many linux distribution
installations and you use one single main grub installation on the MBR
which then chainloads to other grub installations (on the first
sectors of specific partitions).

So please, bring back this option!

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2009-02-21 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
ehm... I gave it for granted: my laptop's HDD is affected by this bug,
in fact, in previous versions of kubuntu I was using the ugly fix. (I
started with 7.04 and then upgraded the system up to 8.04.)

Then today, I decided to install 8.04 from scratch and the bug is not
there anymore (of course, I haven't reapplied the ugly fix, so the
packages now seem to work fine).

Laptop mode starts automatically on battery.

On battery the cycle counts is more than 100 per hour, is this
reasonable?

However, I confirm: no click on AC!

[Bug 310150] Re: -o/--output commandline option is broken in 2.10, 2.11

2008-12-21 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
Hi, I'm the developer of GNU Source-highlight.
The command line option --output works ONLY when --input command line option is

Indeed Source-highlight can handle also arguments without command
option, as in the example above where midiscriptengine.cpp is NOT the
argument of ANY command line option; this way source-highlight can also
handle more than one input file, and also, by relying on the underlying
shell, regular expressions, e.g.,

source-highlight --out-format=html *.cpp *.h *.c

when operating in this mode the --output command line option is ignored
(since this works only for one input file), and the output file is
created automatically by appending the corresponding output format file
extension, e.g., .html in my example, and .txt in your example.

Actually in previous versions (since 2.4) if it worked as you said, it
was not consistent, so that was actually a bug ;-)

I hope this clarifies the problem.

If you have suggestions on how to further document this behavior, please let me
know.
Probably source-highlight should issue and error when --input is not specified,
but this would not be consistent with the fact that the input file can be
specified also with stdin redirection.

[Bug 177492] Re: EXA is balls-achingly slow

2008-11-04 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
I'm experiencing performance problems also with Sabayon, on a Intel
Corporation 82G33/G31, with compiz (but also with ubuntu)...

for the moment the best performances seem to be with the

INTEL_BATCH=1

and this

Section Device
Identifier VESA
Driveri810
#Option RenderAccel on
#Option XAANoOffscreenPixmaps
#Option BusType PCI
#Option ColorTiling on
#Option EnablePageFlip on
#Option AccelMethod XAA
Option UseEvents True
Option AccelMethod exa
Option MigrationHeuristic greedy
Option ExaNoComposite false
Option ExaOptimizeMigration true
EndSection

but the performance is not good enough yet...

in particular, when selecting log off in KDE the darkening effect is
really slow...

has a solution been found for this problem yet?

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-02-03 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
By the way, the ugly fix, when running on batteries calls hdparm with 1
as parameter which means spindown set to 5 seconds... wouldn't it be
better to use $SPINDOWN_TIME which by default is set to 12 (i.e., 12*5
seconds)? This var is set in /etc/default/acpi-support

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-01-12 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
I've done some tests on my new Dell Latitude D630 and after about 4.30 I
get about 425, thus I assume I suffer from this problem, right?

With the ugly fix (actually trying 'hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda') the problem
seems to get solved (no more clicks).

The hdd temperature raises to 41 C which still seems reasonable right?
With the clicks it was around 36.
