[Bug 2065751] [NEW] Mate-panel crashes (easy to reproduce)
Public bug reported: There are many reports out there about mate panel crashes. Ubuntu Version used: Mantic People taking care about this package should make a decision and use the latest mate-panel sourcecode in order to not duplicate developer efforts to fix bugs. Mate-panel is a highly unstable package it shows up numerous valgrind issues and crashes easily when eg. using FreeCAD and switching to fullscreen / windowed mode using ALT-F11 I would strongly recommend to stop distributing the old version of mate desktop environment and set up a system to use the latest git versions until basic stability is given (and just restarting mate-panel when it crashes is not an attractive option). Releasing faulty software in LTS/stable releases does not make any sense; if unstable and if the user wants it use the latest git sources for it (again to avoid developers doing duplicate work on debugging issues) Mate HUD is able to lock up the entire desktop (it did it here, multiple times). My next step here is to remove the mate ubuntu packages and go for the latest git sources (dconf-editor (segfault) and xserver-xorg-input- synaptics (coasting bug) package have the same issues - ubuntu is releasing unstable versions while obvious bugs are fixed already in the latest code repositories). ** Affects: mate-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: There are many reports out there about mate panel crashes. + + Ubuntu Version used: Mantic People taking care about this package should make a decision and use the latest mate-panel sourcecode in order to not duplicate developer efforts to fix bugs. Re: [Bug 544527] Re: usbfs is bugged with 2.6.32.9 and =2.6.33 (breaks VMWare, Qemu, sane scanners, ...)
On Tue, Jul 13, 2010 at 5:14 PM, David Kühling 544...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote: This bugfix is incomplete. Isochronous transfers are still broken, when running 32-bit software on a 64-bit kernel. Function processcompl_compat() in devio.c needs a similar fix to the fix that was applied to processcompl(). Looking at processcompl_compat() I see: if (as-userbuffer urb-actual_length) if (copy_to_user(as-userbuffer, urb-transfer_buffer, urb-actual_length)) return -EFAULT; correct code would be something like if (as-userbuffer urb-actual_length) { if (urb-number_of_packets 0) /* Isochronous */ i = urb-transfer_buffer_length; else /* Non-Isoc */ i = urb-actual_length; if (copy_to_user(as-userbuffer, urb-transfer_buffer, i)) goto err_out; } (note the difference between urb-actual_length and urb-transfer_buffer_length). With kernel 2.6.32-23-generic x86_64 on Ubuntu 10.04, using proprietary USB-hardware hooked up to the USB bus (with software compiled for 32-bit), I can directly observe how isochronous transfers retrieved via ioctl(.. USBDEVFS_REAPURB ..) are too short, i.e. the kernel does not write the end of the data packet to the supplied buffer. Booting on the 2.6.31 kernel still present from before I upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10, the same software runs flawlessly. As a workaround I'll use the older kernel for now (also I could compile for 64-bit, actually...). yes you're right, since we distribute 64 and 32bit drivers it doesn't really affect us. before applying any change you can submit some patches to us and we can test them if needed. Things should definitely not go upstream untested anymore as it used to happen in the past with various kernel releases. (isochronous is bugged with 2.6.26/27/28 (memory leak) and 32/33 (copying wrong memory area). Luckily our hardware supports switching from ISO to BULK in order to work around those issues - but bulk transfers have a bad performance in userspace Markus cheers, David -- usbfs is bugged with 2.6.32.9 and =2.6.33 (breaks VMWare, Qemu, sane scanners, ...) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/544527 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. -- usbfs is bugged with 2.6.32.9 and =2.6.33 (breaks VMWare, Qemu, sane scanners, ...) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/544527 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

These packages use dkms to work, i.e. the first time a new kernel is booted dkms tries to compile the modules, puts them under /lib/modules/(booted kernel version) and removes those modules with the same name of the compiled ones. See http://linux.dell.com/projects.shtml#dkms to understand how dkms works. Note that you need to have linux-headers installed for dkms to work, in fact linux-headers is a dependency of dkms. Both packages have worked on my system with the pre-packed kernels. Hope this helps. I'm currently doing some tests with the newer drivers which are just in userspace for that device. This would avoid having to recompile the driver everytime http://mcentral.de/wiki/index.php5/DVBConfigFramework it's not published yet but it also adds support for MacOSX by using the same driver even! the drx3975d driver is not part of the em28xx-new package anymore and will be distributed with that new system again (this solves all the legal issues with trident (Micronas sold the chip division to Trident recently)). Using the software output also allows to use the 3d effects with tvtime (and it's possible to start it multiple times with different users). It also supports SDL output (which itself has a couple more output plugins) beside direct Software Rendering using ffmpeg/swscale. I'm using a macbook santarosa and a Core 2 quad q6600 pc. the result is the same with the precompiled modules. Will your new code fix this? The problem happend after snd_card_register (I can't post the exact kernel message atm). Thnak you in advance for any help. no, you need to include the em28xx source into the linux-ubuntu-module package and recompile it from there then it will work. Otherwise it compiles the driver against the wrong sources and due the wrong interface definition between those sources it will crash. Please read through all the messages here if you have that problem, the whole discussion covers that issue. Hi, On Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 5:27 PM, jmw86069 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Marcus, although I'm very confused about the various kernels and builds, I understand you're expecting a new release next week. Until then, my question focuses on the remote. I was able to run irrecord -H devinput ... to capture the remote IR signals for the Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro 800e USB stick. It captured every signal, even the ones not recognized by the various other drivers (em28xx, v4l, pinsys, etc.) I'm not sure I did any magic, I just ran it with devinput as the REMOTE_DRIVER. Nonetheless, in my current driver state, I just did get the tuner working again, and now the remote is not recognized at all (nothing about it in /proc/bus/input/devices.) Is it possible either to: (1) use the codes I captured to update the empiatech drivers, or (2) use LIRC and devinput instead of the empiatech keypress methodology? The em28xx driver registers a normal input device, devinput is actually the only way I know how to grab the input with lirc from the em28xx input interface. So using devinput is the only correct way! Thank you for all your efforts -- I have no idea how you support so many people and tuner cards! :-) The manufacturer of the USB chips hired me for improving support and adding support for newer devices. I'm on it full time now and there's a constant improvement but into many directions. I'm aware of many requests (my Mailbox is full with feature requests) although they have to be pipelined in some way. this is not needed and mixing up v4l-dvb-kernel or v4l-dvb-experimental with the precompiled drivers will definitelly break! You now have to restore your kernel/modules in order to get the media driver subsystem clean again. $ hg clone http://mcentral.de/hg/~mrec/v4l-dvb-kernel $ cd v4l-* $ make $ sudo make install $ cd .. basically you'd just have to click onto: http://mcentral.de/empiatech/distris/ubuntu/hardy/empia-2.6.24-16-generic-2_i386.deb in the browser and install it using the installer which pops up. please do not use those packages in any tutorials because they will be updated frequently and the version number will be raised. I will set up a site on mcentral.de which keeps track of the latest packages also for other distributions. Installation: open a terminal and run following command, this will show up one of the extension used within the driver name for the specific kernel. This is an example for 32bit Ubuntu Hardy 19. [Bug 204578] Re: 2.6.24.12 won't boot with em28xx device
when using em28xx based hybrid devices someone might currently run into a problem with dbus: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dbus/+bug/230877 if the system says that the devicenode is in use but you haven't started a tv application run: $ lsof -n | grep video and either close or kill the process which holds the device open. -- 2.6.24.12 won't boot with em28xx device https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204578 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 210132] Re: [hardy] tvtime won't show anything with fglrx
you have to compile it by yourself at the moment, I'm investigating a couple of ways to improve that part of tvtime. The tvtime version on that site works with fglrx using software rendering, best is still to move the output to openGL which I'll probalby do this week. The patches will finally be submitted to the original tvtime version, as intermediate step you can try to use the development version on mcentral.de. [Bug 210132] Re: [hardy] tvtime won't show anything with fglrx
Hi, I have an experimental version of tvtime on mcentral.de it needs some cleanup (and it's also unstable when resizing the video). I expect to do so during the next time. I will provide a package when I'm done with it. As for the people who cannot wait for it you can compile it manually and it will work with the 3d desktop. http://mcentral.de/wiki/index.php5/Tvtime Markus -- [hardy] tvtime won't show anything with fglrx https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/210132 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 204578] Re: 2.6.24.12 won't boot with em28xx device
I will release a Ubuntu Package for that driver within the next few days. The issue is solved and caused because the module isn't built against the ubuntu linux module sources (which comes in an extra package). The installation instruction on mcentral.de won't solve that problem unless someone recompiles the whole kernel (which is not the goal of that project).
