[Bug 1067432] Re: High CPU usage and lag

2012-10-18 Thread Niclas L
I have now tested the beta driver for a while.

In Unity:
The problem is partly fixed. There is still problems with the window management:
* Still no smooth window movements
* The window animations, e.g. when windows are created or minimized, are still
slow.

However, the performance problems with the dash and the launcher are now
gone. The dash was very fast even at the time when compiz struggled with
window animations.

In Gnome Shell:
It seems to work OK.

So I guess there were two problems. One that is fixed by the driver and
another one still present that seems to be related to compiz.

[Bug 1067432] [NEW] High CPU usage and lag

2012-10-16 Thread Niclas L
Public bug reported:

From time to time, the desktop animations get very laggy, both in Unity and in
Gnome Shell. When this happens, the CPU usage of xorg is 20-25% on my quad
core CPU, according to top, so I guess one of my cores is maxed out by xorg.
The slowness is not constant. Instead it comes and goes.

For example
* It can take up to 1-2 seconds to switch between lenses in the dash in Unity
* Window movement is sometimes so slow that the window manager doesn't redraw
the window until I stop moving it, causing the window to disappear from the
window's start position and appear directly in its end position.

[Bug 1062237] [NEW] Cannot reveal the launcher with the mouse when it's set to auto-hide

2012-10-05 Thread Niclas L
Public bug reported:

As the summary says, the launcher cannot be revealed with the mouse when it is
set to auto-hide.
Setting different reveal sensibility values and reveal locations have no effect
at all. The launcher doesn't make an attempt at all to reveal itself.
This was not a problem until just recently when I installed new updates.

[Bug 1062271] [NEW] The sound notification shows a small stripe in the indicator area

2012-10-05 Thread Niclas L
Public bug reported:

A small stripe above a sound notification is sometimes shown. See
attached image.

The stripe is shown when 1) the volume level changes , and 2) there are
no previous notifications on the screen.

The stripe disappears when I hover the mouse over the notification, but appears
again when the mouse leaves the notification.
It also disappears when I refresh the notification, i.e. change volume level
again while the notification is still shown.

We're not experiencing the same error so it's hard to tell. You could
always try since you won't remove your current kernel by doing that. If
you need further help, consider asking at askubuntu.com or
ubuntuforums.org instead.

It is fairly straightforward to update. You will not receive the 3.3.
kernel through the update manager, but the patched 3.2 will of course
end up there when it comes.

If you want to try out the 3.3 kernel, just download these three files:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.3.7-precise/linux-
headers-3.3.7-030307-generic_3.3.7-030307.201205211535_amd64.deb

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.3.7-precise/linux-
headers-3.3.7-030307_3.3.7-030307.201205211535_all.deb

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.3.7-precise/linux-
image-3.3.7-030307-generic_3.3.7-030307.201205211535_amd64.deb

I would guess that you could install them with the software center by
doubleclicking on them.
If not, open a terminal and go to the folder you downloaded the files to and
run dpkg -i *.deb

I can confirm this also.
I first suspected faulty hardware, but the same error occurs with two differenr
motherboards.

Intel Z77 chipset (both motherboards) and Ivy Bridge i7-3770. I also do
not use any external graphics card.

[Bug 867811] Re: Freeze when safely remove a NTFS disk

2011-10-08 Thread Niclas L
@Joseph
I noticed you upgraded to Oneiric on 2011-09-28. Were you having this issue
before you upgraded?
I'm almost certain that I did a fresh install from a daily image instead of
upgrading from Natty.
I can't tell when the bug started to occur since I usually never disconnect the
NTFS disk.
If it is to any help, I could download and run a live CD of Natty and test?

I believe you confirmed this only happens with NTFS?
When I excluded ext4 and fat32 I used a USB stick to do some quick testing. I
now did some new tests with the same USB stick and I found that regardless of
the file system used (tested ext2/3/4, fat, ntfs), the system didn't freeze
when the stick was safely removed. Of course I should have taken the time to
test the stick with NTFS from the start. Sorry for the confusion.
I can therefore no longer say that it is NTFS only since I can only reproduce
the freeze using my external hard drive (which I unfortunately cannot reformat
and test with other file systems).

I've tested with the upstream kernels that you gave me and I could not
boot any kernels at all from 3.0.5 up to 3.1rc9. I never came past the
plymouth screen. After booting into onerics kernel again, I received
the paging request error from Apport mentioned above by Nicolás.

telling me that the system crashed.

If I choose to unmount the disk instead of safely remove it, or if I
mount and unmount it manually using the terminal, the system does not
crash.

[Bug 588385] [NEW] Me menu cannot change the status from Offline to Online

2010-06-01 Thread Niclas L
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

When you go from some status, for example Online, to Offline in the Me Menu,
empathy changes it's status to Offline as expected.
But when you want to go Online again, you cannot do that in the Me Menu. You
will instead have to manually open empathy and set the status to Online.

Why cannot the Me Menu be able to set the status regardless of the
current status, as long as empathy is running?

[Bug 582548] [NEW] The clock applet lights up when clicking on other applets

2010-05-18 Thread Niclas L
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

When the desktop starts up and I, for example, click on the message menu, the
clock applet doesn't light up. So far it's good.
But when I've clicked on the clock applet so that the calendar shows up, and
then close it again, the clock applet lights up like i was hovering the mouse
above it when I click on the message menu again (or the me menu, or the sound
etc.).

To reproduce:
Click on an arbitary applet. The clock doesn't react on it.
Click on the clock so that the calendar shows up, and then close it.
Click on an arbitary appley again and you'll see that the clock lights up.
Run killall gnome-panel and the clock doesn't light up anymore.

[Bug 561821] [NEW] Huawei E1550 / E620 unable to connect

2010-04-12 Thread Niclas L
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: modemmanager

When I plug in my Huawei E1550 (labeled E1550, but reported as E620 by lsusb)
Lucid detects it correctly and NM-applet gives me the choice to set up a new
connection.
When I later try to connect I immediately get a Disconnected notification.

Syslog reports:
modem-manager: Modem /org/freedesktop/ModemManager/Modems/0: state changed
(registered - connecting)
modem-manager: Got failure code 3: No carrier
modem-manager: Modem /org/freedesktop/ModemManager/Modems/0: state changed
(connecting - registered)

The modem indicates that it have found 3G reception and the modem worked
fine under jaunty.

Bug #401655 suggests that the package usb-modeswitch should be installed
to get the modem working, but I get the same result with that package as
I get without.

[Bug 561821] Re: Huawei E1550 / E620 unable to connect

2010-04-12 Thread Niclas L
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: modemmanager

When I plug in my Huawei E1550 (labeled E1550, but reported as E620 by lsusb)
Lucid detects it correctly and NM-applet gives me the choice to set up a new
connection.
- When I later try to connect I immediately get a Disconnected notification.
+ Sometimes the modem successfully connects to the internet, but far too often
I get a immediate Disconnected notification.
+ The first connection attempt seems to be a success most of the times, but not
always.
+ The failure rate seems to be highest when I try to connect for the second
time after I have been previously connected.
+ If the modem starts to fail in it's connection attempts, there isn't anything
I can do to get it to work again except restarting the system and hope for the
best.
+

  Syslog reports:
  modem-manager: Modem /org/freedesktop/ModemManager/Modems/0: state changed
(registered - connecting)
modem-manager: Got failure code 3: No carrier
  modem-manager: Modem /org/freedesktop/ModemManager/Modems/0: state changed
(connecting - registered)

The modem indicates that it have found 3G reception and the modem worked
  fine under jaunty.

Bug #401655 suggests that the package usb-modeswitch should be installed
- to get the modem working, but I get the same result with that package as
- I get without.
+ to get the modem working, and I have it.

[Bug 553317] [NEW] Reading passwords from keyring results in very high CPU usage

2010-04-01 Thread Niclas L
Public bug reported:

In the package gnome-keyring-sharp - 1.0.0-2ubuntu1
a new wrapper was introduced which fixes GMail plugin in Docky etc.

Replace socket use with a wrapper around libgnome-keyring.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-keyring-sharp/+bug/536925/comments/17

But i've noticed that when applications are reading passwords from the
keyring, the CPU usage goes off the chart and the applications even fail
in getting the password (maybe it's just me who doesn't have the
patience to wait).

I've found two ways to reproduce it.
1. Use the GMail plugin in Docky. In system monitor, docky has a constant CPU
usage of about 60-80 percent.
2. Mount a password protected network share (In my case, sftp) and choose to
save the password. Next time when trying to mount CPU goes off the chart again.
This time it's gvfsd-sftp.

Ubuntu Lucid x64
libgnome-keyring1.0-cil 1.0.0-2ubuntu1

Re: [Bug 355842] Re: Window isn't in place after a recovery

2009-04-06 Thread Niclas L
It seems that OO needs to start maximized for the bug to occur.
If you maximize it and then kill it, then it will not start maximized
after the recovery.

This is how I do to reproduce:

* Open OpenOffice. If it doesn't start maximized. Maximize it and close.
Start again.
If it now starts maximized you can continue.
* Write some text.
* Press Alt+F2. Type 'killall soffice.bin'
* Start OpenOffice again.
* Recover the document.

[Bug 355842] [NEW] Window isn't in place after a recovery

2009-04-05 Thread Niclas L
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-core

When openoffie starts (doesn't matter if it's writer, spreadsheet etc.) and
tries to recover a document, it starts with the window a little bit below where
it should be. It also seems that Ubuntu thinks that the window is in place,
since it doesn't work pressing minimize, maximize or close. However, if you
place the pointer a above the buttons (where the buttons should be) you'll see
that the buttons indicates that the pointer is pointing at them.
Have a look at the attachment. It's a picture showing what I'm trying to
explain.

To reproduce:
* Start openoffice writer/spreadsheet/whatever.
* Kill the soffice.bin process.
* Start openoffice and recover the document.

This occurs on two computers.
One running ubuntu 8.10 x86 and one running 9.04 x86

Ubuntu 9.04:
openoffice.org-core:
  Installerad: 1:3.0.1-7ubuntu1
xserver-xorg-core:
  Installerad: 2:1.6.0-0ubuntu9
xserver-xorg-video-radeon:
  Installerad: 1:6.12.1-0ubuntu2

Unfortunately I have no version info for the 8.10 but it's fully
updated, and it also has the radeon driver.

[Bug 347291] [NEW] Notifications don't show after a secondary screen is unattached

Public bug reported:

When I attach an additional screen to the right of my laptop, the place

far everything works fine.

Why doesn't thunderbird use the global printing UI where you can choose PDF?

[Bug 331246] [NEW] [Regression] Compiz makes movie players crash

2009-02-18 Thread Niclas L
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

As of today I cannot play movies when compiz is activated. After
checking the apt log, the only relevant updates installed today (Feb 18)
were these:

xserver-common (2:1.5.99.902-0ubuntu6) to 2:1.5.99.902-0ubuntu7
xserver-xorg-core (2:1.5.99.902-0ubuntu6) to 2:1.5.99.902-0ubuntu7

When I start a movie in totem/vlc/whatever, the program just exits (without an
apport report), but I get some output in ~/.xsession-errors

Dist: Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha i686

linux-image-2.6.28-8-generic:
  Installed: 2.6.28-8.23

compiz:
  Installed: 1:0.7.9+git20090211-0ubuntu4

xserver-xorg-core:
  Installed: 2:1.5.99.902-0ubuntu7

xserver-xorg-video-ati:
  Installed: 1:6.10.99.0-1ubuntu1

Worth mentioning is that i experienced with the radenhd driver yesterday, but
it's pruged now and I'm now back with the ati/radeon driver.
xorg.conf was also restored afterwards.

[Bug 329402] [NEW] [Jaunty] gnome-display-properties doesn't detect monitors

2009-02-14 Thread Niclas L
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When an additional monitor is attached after a login, gnome-display-properties
does not find it when clicking Detect Monitors.
Running xrandr --auto in the terminal makes the secondary monitor start and
show the desktop.
This also adds the monitor to gnome-display-properties.
I suppose this shows that the back end finds the monitor while the front end
doesn't?

If the monitor already is attached when you log on, the display shows up
though.

[Bug 329411] [NEW] [Wishlist] Add a way for easy copying of package versions

2009-02-14 Thread Niclas L
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

When submitting a bug report, you are expected to also include some package
versions.
Unfortunately there is no quick and easy way to do that from synaptic.
Suppose that I now want to look up the version for package synaptic:
I search for synaptic and then selecting Properties, leaving me with a window
showing the version but no way to copy it.
Instead I must write it down by hand in this form then I'm writing the bug
report.

I suggest that the whole content of the Properties window are made
markable and copyable. just as the Maintainer section is.

frequent (several freezes per hour) freezes when compiz is activated and I do
something that requires some sort of animation (i.e. open the menu or

[Bug 323915] Re: [Jaunty] aMSN icon does not show correctly

2009-02-01 Thread Niclas L
It seems that it has something to do with compiz and visual effects. I
have a second computer that also runs ubuntu jaunty and amsn. The main
difference is that the second computer has fglrx instead of radeon and
doesn't have visual effects activated. I saw that the icon seems fine on
that computer so I tested turning of visual effects on my primary and
then restart amsn. The icon then worked. Turning on visual effects AFTER
amsn has started had no effect. The icon still worked. When I later
restart amsn (with compiz on) makes the icon behave strange again.

Primary (radeon):
Turn off effects and then start amsn - Icon fine
Start amsn and after that start the effects - Icon fine
Start amsn with the effects already activated - Icon not fine

Secondary (fglrx):
Icon always working since the effects cannot be activated. Driver not yet
compatible I guess.

I'm using the radeon driver (1:6.10.0-1ubuntu1) and yes, every session,
but tt isn't always the same problem. Right now I don't have the black
background, but the icon still have multiple layers with different
status icons. I always have liferea running in the notification area and
it starts about the same time as amsn at login (both in autostart) and
sometimes I get a mix of those two icons representing amsn.

[Bug 323957] [NEW] aMSN crashes when sending an offline message

2009-02-01 Thread Niclas L
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: amsn

When sending a message to someone who is offline (or has offline as status
while logged on) makes aMSN show a crash report. Choosing Ignore makes it
possible to continue to chat, but the offline message never gets away.
The only way to send a message to a receiver who has the status set to offline
is if the receiver first sends a message so that a connection establishes.
After that it works to send messages until the connection is lost.

As I recall it, the upstream 0.97.1 version of aMSN doesn't have this
bug. I think it was introduced in upstream 0.97.2 but later fixed.

I attach the detailed info from the crash report from aMSN.

When I press the suspend button on my Thinkpad T60, the computer goes to

[Bug 317781] Re: Ext4 data loss

2009-01-29 Thread Niclas L
I have experienced some issues with EXT4 and data losses too, but more extreme
than you all describe. I installed jaunty alpha 3 two days ago and have all the
updates installed. Since the install 2 days ago I have lost data on 3
occations. The most strange losses is:
* the computer wiped out a whole network share mounted in fstab
* the computer one time also removed ~/.icons when I empty the trash

The data losses never happened after a crasch or power failure.

[Bug 322374] Re: [jaunty regression] Pulse Audio finds no card for output

2009-01-28 Thread Niclas L
For those who really want sound I have found a way to get it working (until you
log out).
Log in, and then start a guest session. Go to System-SettingsSound and check
if there exist an output device.
Then log out from the guest session and back into your user. You should now
have the device under output.
For me, the device was unselected. If it is, just select it and you should have
audio.

[Bug 231712] Re: VLC doesn't show fullscreen video on right screen

2008-11-25 Thread Niclas L
I can't test it again since I don't have two monitors connected anymore.
I've seen others who runs it successfully tough, but with a different
setup.

The working setup:
Ubuntu 8.10
fglrx 2:8.543-0ubuntu4
TV connected to TV out and configured in ATI's GUI
vlc 0.9.4-1ubuntu3

The non-working setup:
Ubuntu 8.04
nvidia-glx 1:96.43.05+2.6.24.14-21.51
LCD as secondary using Xinerama
vlc 0.8.6.release.e+x264svn20071224+faad2.6.1-0ubuntu3.2

Maybe someone with ubuntu 8.04 who have two monitors connected and uses
xinerama can test?
