Re: [Bug 681348] Re: Add show me the desktop keyboard or Unity dock shortcut

2011-11-17 Thread PresuntoRJ
Sorry, but there is still a BUTTON on Windows 7 for that, just not with an
icon on it... the right most portion of the start bar, past even the
clock/date, if you hover it show a preview of the desktop making the
windows transperant, if you click, you get them all minimized (i.e. the
desktop)

2011/11/17 John Lea 681...@bugs.launchpad.net

 ** Tags added: udp

 ** Description changed:

Keyboard shortcut to minimise all windows required.

  Description:

Ubuntu used to have a button on the bottom left corner of the screen
that minimised all windows. This button was equivalent to a button that
used to exist in MS Windows prior to the advent of Vista/Windows 7. In
Unity this button has been removed, however a 'minimise all' function is
still useful to allow users to go directly to their desktop.

  Competitive analysis:

Minimise all windows functionality in other operating systems.

Windows 2000 Windows XP: Button on desktop and Windows Logo+D key
 combination
Window 7: Windows Logo + D key combination only
  OSX: Option-Command-M Key combination only

  Change request:

 - 1) Implement a Super+D keyboard shortcut to minimise all windows.
 -
 - 2) Create a small application that when clicked minimises all windows.
+ - Create a small application that when clicked minimises all windows.
Users who would like a 'minimise all windows' button can then add this
 - application to their launcher.
+ application to their launcher. This app will not be in the Launcher by

Re: [Bug 768558] Re: [STAGING] X wont start since the upgrade to 2.6.35-29-generic-pae

2011-05-16 Thread PresuntoRJ
I have just upgraded from the previous kernel with sudo apt-get
dist-upgrade... it installed without any error messages, and from the boot,
the failed to get to the GUI.

I have figured out I needed to boot from a previous version (which worked),
then apt-get autoremove --purge the image, headers and a nvidia driver
dependency (dkms) and reinstall them...

After that, it has just worked, no other step was necessary.

Have in mind I have since upgraded to Natty (which failed catastrophically,
forcing me to make a clean install) so it will be impossible to try it
again, but the bug was there.

2011/5/16 Herton R. Krzesinski 768...@bugs.launchpad.net

PresuntoRJ, do you have any steps to reproduce the issue again? We need
to know what's going on, but from your comments I can't determine if
it's a missing dependency or what happened (it could also be some
packages temporarily missing on the mirrors too), since reinstalling it
started to work again, so for this to be a fixable bug we need to know
how to reproduce it or if it has a real issue in ubuntu packages,
otherwise it's either won't fix or invalid.

[Bug 783047] [NEW] most indicators fail to show under lubuntu

2011-05-15 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

when I am under lubuntu, indicators seems to fail constantly... from the
Network keeping the unconnected state even when coneccetd, to wheather
showing sometimes an invalid icon (black square, with a red slashed
circle), even an empty space that I cannot understand which indicator
should be there... not working also for ubuntuone-indicator or dropbox
or cpufreq or sysmonitor... the only one that seems to constantly work
so far is the caffeine.

Is there any major differences for the indicator to work under Lubuntu ?
Investigating, I have noticed that Lubuntu puts an old style
Notification Area (which also works fine under Ubuntu Classic Gnome) and
if I try to add the Indicator it disables the other one. I have to
remove the indicator and re-login in order to fix the Notification Area.

Is there a workaround? Are there any tests I can try, or log files I can
post?

[Bug 767436] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in brw_validate_state()

2011-05-15 Thread PresuntoRJ
I have been trying to get reproduce the bug to capture dmesg,
i915_error_state and even backtraces from my gdm session, but I am not
sure what triggers it yet.

So far, it seems that it freezes when the screensaver was running for
some time BECAUSE IT HAD TURNED MY SCREEN OFF due to energy policy...

I had since disengaged the energy control option to never turn my screen
off again, so far it has not frozen my system again. I suspect that this
could be the root cause, but I am not sure how to prove it, or what
packages could be involved to further the investigation.

It also seems to happen only on my systems with intel video boards
(Mobile GM965/GL960 Lenovo Laptop and Mobile 945GME Express Asus
netbook).

[Bug 768560] Re: X wont start since the upgrade to 2.6.35-29-generic-pae

2011-05-15 Thread PresuntoRJ
I have since upgraded this machine to Natty (32) and it failed
catastrophically... so much it was not showing the grub menu due to an
impossible high resolution, not showing plymouth during boot, and
basically unusable... Hopefully I had a full back up (plus my home was
on another disk) and could wipe it clean and start over with Natty
(64)...

It is mostly working fine, though Plymouth only shows when I turn it off
(never when I turn it on), and compiz seems to have a bad memory leak
when under Unity, and I had to set Grub to show as console since the
graphic version was still not showing (probably still cause of an
impossible high resolution, but at least it shows).

None of this issues existed up to Maverick (have been using Ubuntu on
this machine since 8.04)

[Bug 768578] Re: gdm froze when anything but Unity went to fullscreen (even screensaver)

(Mobile GM965/GL960 Lenovo Laptop and Mobile 945GME Express Asus
netbook).

Re: [Bug 783047] Re: most indicators fail to show under lubuntu

2011-05-15 Thread PresuntoRJ
I have installed from an Ubuntu installation the meta-package
lubuntu-desktop... therefore it already have the indicator-application and
other possible dependencies.

When I try to add the Indicator appletes in the panel they both disapear
(indicator applets and notification area) rendering me nothing to show the
icons...

I have then, as I have already said, remove the indicator area from the
panel and relogin to my system (which restart X) for the notification area
to show up again, but, still, many indicator icons missing or problematic.
So, it is not a solution.

If there are any mandatory packages for it to work, they must be set as
dependency in the lubuntu-desktop meta package anyway.

2011/5/15 Julien Lavergne julien.laver...@gmail.com

Thanks for your bug report. You need to add the Indicator applets of
lxpanel (right clic on the panel) to be able to activate the indicator
support. You probably want to also install indicator-application package, to
 add basic support.
Please report back if you have still a problem after that.

[Bug 782322] [NEW] plugin iostat_ios looses track of its state

2011-05-13 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: munin

Plugin iostat_ios regularly loses track of its state and no longer plots
a graph. In munin-node.log the following lines are logged:

[8468] Error output from iostat_ios:
[8468] Magic number checking on storable file failed at ../../lib/Storable.pm
(autosplit into ../../lib/auto/Storable/_retrieve.al) line 380, at
/etc/munin/plugins/iostat_ios line 218
[8468] Service 'iostat_ios' exited with status 255/0.

The only remedy I have found so far is deleting the state file
(/var/lib/munin/plugin-state/iostat-ios.state) and then running the
plugin manually to check (munin-run iostat_ios).

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install munin and leave it running.

Actual results:
1. It collects the values for a while (usually a few days) and then, iostat_ios
stops producing data for graphing.

Expected results:
1. iostat_ios should keep producing data for graphing.

Re: [Bug 740126] Re: Disabling an output can cause vblank events to be missed

2011-05-12 Thread PresuntoRJ
I have been trying to get reproduce the bug to capture dmesg,
i915_error_state and even backtraces from my gdm session, but I am not
sure what triggers it yet.

So far, it seems that it freezes when the screensaver was running for
some time BECAUSE IT HAD TURNED MY SCREEN OFF due to the energy policy...

I had since disengaged the energy control option to never turn my screen
off again, so far it has not frozen my system again. I suspect that this
could be the root cause, but I am not sure how to prove it, or what
packages could be involved to further the investigation.

It also seems to happen only on my systems with intel video boards
(Mobile GM965/GL960 Lenovo Laptop and Mobile 945GME Express Asus
netbook).

2011/5/11 leomeloxp 740...@bugs.launchpad.net

Hi everyone I think I got this bug running Natty on a Dell Inspiron 1545
Laptop. For me it always happened when the laptop was left idle,
sometimes after the display turned off others even before that (possibly
with the lid closed). I'll try the Kernel suggested on #46 and #53. I'm
subscribing and will report back if I get it again. If anyone can tell
me how to help debugging it I'll be happy to be of any help.

 Do your best everyone o/

Re: [Bug 768558] Re: [STAGING] X wont start since the upgrade to 2.6.35-29-generic-pae

2011-05-12 Thread PresuntoRJ
It makes no sense to consider this bug invalid!

If there is a mandatory package for it to run (with GUI) it MUST be set on
the deb itself as a dependency that MUST be installed so the installation
process (apt-get install...) would also get it. Its a bug on the packaging
(.deb) of the package.

If its not supposed to be a dependency, there fore, not forcefully
installed, that there is a BUG in the kernel package rendering it impossible
to use in certain situations that must be fixed.

Either way, there is a bug, or it would have worked as expected.

2011/5/12 Herton R. Krzesinski 768...@bugs.launchpad.net

Ok, so I assume then this is either a missing linux-headers-generic
issue, or something was bad and reinstalling the packages solved, not a
real bug. PresuntoRJ, if you see this issue again please reopen, thanks.

Agreed, could even be a right click somewhere... just don't go on braking
something for the sake of fixing something else... that would not be a real
fix

No, xdotool is useless. By pressing the button, it goes to the interface
the same as that after pressing [super].

PS, it's a silly mistake to miss the great show-desktop button.

[Bug 768581] Re: Unity froze when anything else went fullscreen (even screensaver) for more than 30 minutes

2011-05-11 Thread PresuntoRJ
I have been trying to get reproduce the bug to capture dmesg,
i915_error_state and even dtraces from my gdm session, but I am not sure
what triggers it yet.

(Mobile GM965/GL960 Lenovo Laptop and Mobile 945GME Express Asus
netbook).

[Bug 779514] [NEW] compiz is using too much memory really quickly

2011-05-08 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

After a really short uptime, when I am logged in my Natty box, under
Unity, compiz start using A LOT of memory, up to a point that my system
has to swap... it was never like this in previous Ubuntu versions, and
not even on Beta2 of Natty.

It seems to me it has started in a recent upgrade (after the Natty
release)

Historically (using since 8.04 on this machine) it has never passed over
5%, even when I was logged on for over a month.

Today, I already had to reboot twice, cause it was impacting performance
of many softwares (I guess due to increased IO), specially VMWarePlayer
(3.1.4) and VirtualBox-ose (up to date with repositories). I have not
noticed much of an impact in Apache2 or MySQL for now.

My uptime is only two days and I had to end the session (logout) some
twelve times since the boot... My current session is less than 25
minutes old and it already shows the compiz process (with Unity) using
8.8% of my RAM (of the 3.7G available) and pretty soon it will reach
above 20% (as the last time I had to logout, and the impacts were kind
of mitigated) and up to 45% (the worst case I have noticed looking at
free -m and/or htop since my last dist-upgrade, when not even logging
out seemed to improve my situation)

I am not sure if it could be cause by some other package (or combination
of packages I have installed), or some of the running applications (most
of them, everyday tools I had for several releases), or some indicators
I had manually set to run from the repository, PPA and third part
(ubuntuone-indicator, weather-indicator, dropbox, caffeine, sysmonitor-
indicator, cpufreq-indicator), but I am not sure how the would consume
memory under the compiz process instead of theirs.

Are there any log files I can post, tests I can try, to help understand
this odd behavior?

2011/5/3 Bryce Harrington 768...@bugs.launchpad.net

For X freeze bugs on Intel, you need to collect the output of 'dmesg'
and your /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state file. Both of these
must be collected while the machine is locked up (e.g. by sshing into
 the sick machine over ethernet).

Re: [Bug 768558] Re: [STAGING] X wont start since the upgrade to 2.6.35-29-generic-pae

2011-05-03 Thread PresuntoRJ
quick question, does your grub start in graphics mode or as text in the
console? any way, can you try to change the /etc/default/grub file so that
the option GRUB_TERMINAL=console is not commented (removing the #) and then
sudo grub2-update to apply the change?

I have tried this in my system and it blinks a lot less during the boot, and
I cold actually get to the X once - then I gave it up an removed (apt-get
autoremove --purge) the kernel, headers and dkms

In my case, the later reinstalation of those (kernel, headers and dmks)
were suffice.

this makes no sense! I am not installing anything that could trigger a

today I was trying to remove plymouth to solve a black screen during
boot issue, and apt got me some pretty odd messages... first was about
an Apache engine (apache2-mpm-prefork) being incompatible with another
(apache2-mpm-worker)

Of course they are, but why removing plymouth woukd trigger this?

So I have tried to install the latter (apache-mpm-worker) which, of
course removed the incompatible one automatically (apache-mpm-prefork)
and a few php5 libraries with it...

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge plymouth

 apache2-mpm-worker : Conflicts: apache2-mpm
 procps : Depends: upstart-job

E: Broken packages

when I have tried it again I got this even stranger message about
upstart-job and iniscripts ... but none should be affected or envolved
with the plymouth package I was trying to remove.

$ sudo apt-get autoremove --purge plymouth

I am not installing or removing anything that could trigger that
messages! Not sure what could happen if keep walking dows this path, but
it seems that it will destroy my machine, so I gave up and reinstalled
the packages I have taken out just in case

is my packaging system broken beyond repair?

[Bug 775362] [NEW] I cannot forward chromium-browser X to another display via ssh

2011-05-02 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: chromium-browser

most applications are compatible with X redirection to another
display... when I access another machine via ssh with -X as parameter,
when I run a console application, I get the output to my terminal, as
expected, and when I run a X application (GUI) I would expect it to show
up in my local machine (the one I am accessing from). It works for most
applications I have tried, such as Firefox and Libreoffice, but somehow,
this does not happen with Chromium-browser.

It ends up showing in the remote machine session (the machine I am
accessing).

I have found out it also fails with Google-Chrome (related to Chromium).

I am pretty sure is only occurs on certain occasions, when I have a
browser already opened in the remote machine, for the same user... so I
am not sure it was supposed to be this way, but the absence of
information in the running shell felt wrong.

Hey, I have just checked that the Compiz binding is correct, that is, there
is a Super+D set to show the desktop... still its not working as it should.
And Alt+Tab was not set to Next Window, although, Alt+Shift+Tab was set to
Previous Window :-/

2011-05-02 Thread PresuntoRJ
Don't get me wrong, but I believe you need to post a new bug, since you are
not using the same kernel in Natty (you could, but you would have to
manually choose it in the Grub menu during the boot, if you haven't remove
it yet). My Natty systems are running 2.6.38-8. Please, check again if you
are running the 2.6.35 kernel with uname -r , or that your are really under
Natty with lsb_release -dc

me too. i use kubuntu natty now and it brought no improvement.

i have a geforce gt 230m and up to kernel 2.6.35-28, everything works.

2011/5/2 flying sheep 768...@bugs.launchpad.net

why would i post in this bug report if it didn’t occur since the upgrade
from 2.6.35-28 to 2.6.35-29? it did.

 it’s only that i still have the problem with the newest kernel in natty;
that’s additional information, not a new bug. -.-

Re: [Bug 681348] Re: Add show me the desktop keyboard or Unity dock shortcut

2011-05-02 Thread PresuntoRJ
I have not tried them all, but seems like what happened to me too... it used
to work on the betas, now, sometimes it does, some times it does not...
depends on what is going on, what applications are running, and even if they
are restored or maximized, or which applications are opened together
(for instance, I worked with focused in a gnome-terminal if it has
libreoofice also running, but it does not work with the focus also in
gnome-terminal, but the other app is chromium-browser)... pretty bizaar.

2011/5/2 Michael-250 681...@bugs.launchpad.net

Actually I couldn't believe that this is a real bug, because SUPER+D was
working for me since natty alpha ? (can't remember which release it
 was).

I have a fresh install of natty desktop (64bit). And right now SUPER+D is
not working anymore. At least not for all windows.
Open applications: Firefox, Evolution, Nautilus and vdr-sxfe (xine). Only
vdr-sxfe window is minimized and maximized when pressing SUPER+D. All other
 windows don't care about SUPER+D.

 Hope that information helps.

[Bug 773864] [NEW] root crontab file has disapeard on my maverick box

2011-04-30 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cron

I know for a fact hey ware there, cause a couple of days ago I had to
edit (sudo crontab -l) to comment a few lines for a test I was doing
(trying a new backup program).

Today, when I was done testing, I wanted to uncomment the lines to roll
back the old backup schedule and the crontab was empty... sudo crontab
-e also indicated it empty and in /var/spool/cron/crontabs I have
found only the users files, not the root one.

Then, after I have cryed a little, I have found this post
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10742514#post10742514 with
someone describing the same issue, but in Lucid then I have posted
this bug report.

I am not sure if there is a workaround, a way to reproduce the symptoms,
a way to get my crontab file back (my /var/spool where never backed up),
or if there was a recent crontab upgrade during my testing... but I can
tell I had to reboot a couple of times theese days, and never expected
this to happen.

I tend to enjoy Unity. Brings something new to the table. Plus, with the
roll-out of GNOME3 comes a pretty bland interface, since it's still so
new. There should be a mix of GNOME3 and Unity, but with more user
preferences allowing customization. Just remember, GNOME didn't start
out perfect. It took many revisions to get it to look decent.

Re: [Bug 768560] Re: X wont start since the upgrade to 2.6.35-29-generic-pae

2011-04-28 Thread PresuntoRJ
I am not upgrading this machine to natty soon, its a production
desktop...

I can only upgrade the production workstation to natty once its running at
least smoothly on my test systems, after the official release, cause I
cannot risk not having this one working fine. Sorry.

on the other hand, I do have other equipments, and in two of them I already
have natty running... unfortunately, those do not have nviadia cards on them
(one has Intel 965gm, which their own bunch of bugs ;), and one AsusEeePc
1005Ha ) so dkms is not an issue in any natty I have tested so far.

if I do get my hands on a box with nvidia, I will jump in to test natty on
it (prefereably, upgrading it from maverick)

 Hey PresuntoRJ,

Hi, have you had a chance to test if this bug is still present in natty?

If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty
 and run the command:

  apport-collect bug-number

which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting
natty. (It is best to run this right after reproducing the problem.)

Re: [Bug 771837] Re: xorg died (gracefully to login) but without ado

2011-04-28 Thread PresuntoRJ
can I do it via byobu on the local system (so I can reatach the screen in
case of crash) or should I do it via ssh from a different machine?

I really do not know how long it would take to actually hit gold here, so
think I cannot keep using two systems at once for several days... any
ideas?

every time I enter gdb and try to attach the runnig Xorg pid, it freezes...
if I try to run if with the -keeptty -dumbSched options, it tells me Xorg is
already running (of course)... if I kill it, it simply respawns... the guide
seems pretty useless cause if you follow the steps there, you cannot get any
backtrace whatsoever. How can I ever get X to run inside gdb? (I know I
could sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop, but the only time it is mentioned there, is
totally unrelated with the steps to get the backtrace)

that said, I did manage to start inside gdb and pretty much as soon as I
have loged in, it halted with a SIGUSR1 adn wont resume no matter what I
try... I am not sure what I am doing wrong or if that could be related with
the issue:

Hi PresuntoRJ, of course you're not expected to know such details. ;-)

The 'xorg' package is a general inbox, and bugbot takes care of figuring
out your video driver, symptoms, and so on, and moves the bug to the
 right location.

Your system appears to be encountering a segmentation fault in the X
server, resulting in it crashing. gdm restarts an X session which is
why you're returned to the login screen each time.

The out of the blue nature of it is troubling. X segmentation faults
are pretty rare and tend to occur only under specific circumstances. So
there are *usually* steps to reproduce them. When there isn't, I start
suspecting hardware faults such as bad memory chips. But let's assume
it to be a software bug in X first.

Can you collect a full backtrace? This will help tell me where in the
code exactly that the crash is happening. Directions for doing this are
 at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing

[Bug 771837] [NEW] xorg died (gracefully to login) but without ado

2011-04-27 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I was using it normally (firefox, chrome, banshee, and also reading a
PDF) when suddenly the X turned off, back to a textual background (as I
would expected if I have pressed Ctrl+Alt+Bckspc, but I have not) and
shortly after I was presented with the login screen again (gdm?) ... it
has happened at least five time the last two weeks, but I was not sure
if it was related with other issues I was also facing during the beta
testing, but now I am sure it had nothing to do with anything else I was
doing. The system is fully up to date (checked just after the issue, to
be sure). I do not had a real step-by-step to reproduce the problem, as
it seems to happen kind of out of the blue. Sice the first few times I
have experience this issue I have installed a current kernel (not from
apt-get) to try to solve something else (it did not seemed to have any
influence on the current problem, as it happened before and after the
upgrade anyway). I also suspect it might have something to do with intel
drivers in xorg, but I am not skilled in x enough to even try this
theory.

[Bug 768560] Re: X wont start since the upgrade to 2.6.35-29-generic-pae

2011-04-27 Thread PresuntoRJ
I have managed to boot and get the GUI running when I attempted to fully
remove the kernel and header files (linux-image-2.6.35-29-generic-pae,
linux-image-2.6.35-29-generic, linux-headers-2.6.35-29-generic-pae,
linux-headers-2.6.35-29-generic and linux-headers-2.6.35-29) and then
reinstalling them, which has forced the dkms to readjust accordingly
(what seems vital to nvidia drivers to work properly).

I am not sure now if the dkms trigger have failed during the original
attempt to upgrade (i do not remember), but it seems plausible.

I am not sure yet if there are anything else missing on my system (I
have been using the last kernel before that since the glitch presented)
but I am typing right now from Google Chrome running just fine under
Gnome, so it looks mostly fine.

I will come back with more as I find out.

[Bug 756379] Re: the unity bar (on the left) keeps freezing

2011-04-27 Thread PresuntoRJ
I was able to capture the screen, having the sidebar frozen... notice in
the picture that the mouse is away (to the right side of the screen) and
it is still opened... also, that I have nautilus running (maximized) and
it show no triangle by its home icon... the bar simply wont go away (and
usually there is no way to keep it from hiding)

I had to remotely access (ssh) this box to get proper control over my
system, since compiz --replace and unity --replace hadn`t accomplished
anything close to what I had expected (paining my screen totally white
was not my goal), and the reboot was mandatory

Are there any log files I can try to post here to describe better my
huge frustration with unity keeping me from actually using the system as
disired? I doubt anyone moms (mine included) be able to understand the
mess that Unity does to the usability ! Wasn`t it created for tiny
screen (like netbooks)? What is the advantage of forcing this on the
users even when they huge huge screens? The math does not seem to add!

[Bug 772153] [NEW] unity prevents me from being productive on my desktop

2011-04-27 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I will try to purge my frustrations with Unity so far, specially the
ones I remember more vividly, in one huge bug report.

I am not considering any instability, which happens a lot, but could be
related to the beta state of it all.

I consider most of this issues as regressions of user interaction with
the system, overall ergonomics, and usability. Most are not paper cuts,
but simply put, sound like a design and/or execution flaw. Don't get me
wrong, I am all for change, specially the good ones, just not very keen
on the bad ideas.

1) Unity was intended to help the use of precious screen area on tiny
systems, like netbooks. In usually large screens (desktop and
notebooks), its more disturbing than really useful... really far from
what the idea had as an ideal. Besides that, most applications support
F11 (or some other shortcut or menu option) to go to fullscreen anyway.

2) Information keeps disappearing or is kept hidden from the user who
wants to control/monitor the system (no indicator equivalents to several
gnome-applets must haves, such as, system-monitor or sensors) and the
dam sidebar keeps hiding, and there is no way to prevent it, and several
programs that are not able to display its icon (with status, and/or
properties) when running, like dropbox... even the menus, now in the
title bar, vanish when you move the mouse away, and you are left with
the application name (when not maximized), or the filename/site title
(when it is)

3) There is no easy way to accomplish several every-day tasks (such as
getting to the desktop WITH MY MOUSE, Super+D is a keyboard shortcut to
what is supposed to an icon somewhere; or not being able to set the
number or geometry of workspaces; even running an installed application
is now behind 5 to 8 mouse moves and clicks); or even glancing somewhere
to know what applications are really running (you have to put your mouse
where the side bar is, which keeps hidding no matter what), or even
clicking in the left side of an running application, like a text editor
or browser or file manager, without the dam sidebar popping up in your
way (one probably end up moving an icon there accidentally, I have done
it quite sometimes now) - even when you use the bottom panel auto-
hidding, most applications have a status bar which kind of acts like a
buffer between the accidental triggering of it most of the time...
Ubuntu does not even have a windows edge anymore... so the left of any
application is just a hover away to getting below the Unity bar.

4) There is not even a default behavior for applications to display
their things, i.e. the coloring in the themes, the coloring of the
icons (of running apps, and in the side bar, and lens, and everywhere)
that sometimes are forced to black (or white) and some are kept colored;
the menu that could end up in the title bar, or not (look at libre-
office, for instance... maybe it keeps the menu in the window cause it
does not fit it the title bar maybe, because, the title bar
might not be the correct position for most menus)

There are several others that don occur to me right now, probably
because it does not hurt so much, but I have talked about them in
freenode #ubuntu+1 when I have first realized

A bad behavior is worst to not having a default state... there is no
second chance to make a good first impression... specially in the
default settings.

Cause it is not the package we thought about, does not mean the issue is
invalid, cause I keep getting the system in a frozen state

2011/4/25 Bryce Harrington 768...@bugs.launchpad.net

You've got some weird wireless error messages in your dmesg.

Anyway, this sounds more like a power manager issue than X. X failures
generally don't result in zombie processes, that sounds more like
 plumbing layer misbehavior.

Also I notice you have VirtualBox installed, which could cause problems:

 [ 4177.752515] warning: `VirtualBox' uses 32-bit capabilities (legacy
 support in use)

Anyway, not looking likely to be an X issue. Reopen if you can narrow
to a test case that demonstrates something X specifically is failing on,
or error messages in an X log or something.

Re: [Bug 768576] Re: desktopcouch keeps becoming zombie

2011-04-25 Thread PresuntoRJ
ok, and what would be the father process in the system that actualy call
desktopcouch and end up freezing my system and leaving the zombies process ?

2011/4/25 Eric Casteleijn eric.castele...@canonical.com

While the desktopcouch-service zombie process is an unfortunate bug that
we're looking into, it is extremely unlikely to make your system freeze.
(Basically it's a child process that does not get cleaned up properly,
but it's not using anything much in the way of resources.)

Re: [Bug 768577] Re: banshee froze when fullscreen

2011-04-25 Thread PresuntoRJ
Yes, it did happened just yesterday evening... I could be coincidental with
other issue I am having with a xorg intel driver, but it does happen a lot
more often under Unity that under Gnome (Ubuntu-Classic)... most of the
times when it goes fullscreen in my system for more than 30 minutes (in the
case of Bashee, I usually get to the Playing now picture of the album) and I
am AFK ... when I keep using the box, it can stay for much longer time
without crashing

2011/4/25 Kamus kamu...@gmail.com

PresuntoRJ, please could you check if this behaviour persists for you if
you try to reproduce it with the classic gnome desktop? also could you
provide us the file ~/.config/banshee-1/log as a separated attach into
 your report? Thank you

[Bug 767425] Re: [i965gm] GPU lockup (IPEHR: 0x08000000)

2011-04-22 Thread PresuntoRJ
I have just downloaded the newer kernel there (form the current folder)
linux-image-2.6.38-996-generic_2.6.38-996.201103251543_i386.deb and its
headers (all and i386)... lets see how the do. ;)

Is this some specially compiled debug version of the kernel? Or just
with some newer patches?

[Bug 767425] Re: [i965gm] GPU lockup (IPEHR: 0x08000000)

2011-04-22 Thread PresuntoRJ
Just downloaded and installed the lastest Kernel available there as
current (linux-
image-2.6.38-996-generic_2.6.38-996.201103251543_i386.deb) and its
headers (all and i386)... lets see how they do ;)

Is this a specially built kernel with debug enabled? or just some newer
patches?

It seems to boot alright, but (as a notebook that I keep my hands on)
the machine felt a little warmer ... I wanted to check the temperature
(in case the kernel was forcing something odd with the CPUs) but I have
found out I am unable to collect temperature with acpi tools now (it
used to work just fine, even with landscape-sysinfo, and its also gone)

I can still see the speed step its keeping the processor though, via
indicator-cpufreq, and it seemes quiet usual (the occasional oscillation
to top speed, and then back to slowest or some middle clock)

The battery information seems coherent too, the detection of power
source and the estimated percentage (currently 97%) to discharge when
not connected... but it does not show the estimated time to discharge or
recharge (as it used to).

Not sure if its kernel related or a incredible coincidence (since it was
only the kernel that I have updated now).

By the way, it still feels really warm, almost hot.

[Bug 769114] [NEW] there are no hints showing when I keep the mouse hovering an indicator icon

2011-04-22 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

It used to show a hint message when you left the mouse hovering over one
of the icons in the top panel, such as the city you where showing the
temperature and weather report, or the battery estimated time to
recharge (at least percentage of charge), ssid of the network, and
probably wifi speed... Now, under unity, nothing ! you need to click to
view the menu, and with any luck, figure out what the current status is
(like the audio volume level, by the position of the scroll in the bar)

[Bug 769127] [NEW] session control menu wont show up when I click on the power button

2011-04-22 Thread PresuntoRJ
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-session

about 30% of the time I click there, when I want to logout or restart,
or whatever) the menu wont show up ... only a little edge will highlight
the button it self (as it usually does when a menu is showing) but not
the actual menu...

I then have to move the mouse away and try again and again... sometimes,
it only shows when I click somewhere else in the indicator (such as the
telepathy menu) and if the show (as usually do) I can hover the mouse to
the power button and its menu will show.

The machine could be totally busy (load and io) that could compromise
the timing when a menu shows (cause it needs to multiprocess its way
through the drawing process), but it also happens when I am not doing
anything at all (not even on background) so that is no excuse

Besides that odd behavior, the indicator seems pretty responsive.

I am not sure if there are some test or log files I can try to post...
and since its kind of intermittent, I am not sure I can capture the menu
not showing up with gnome-screenshot -d 10

2011-04-22 Thread PresuntoRJ
Oddly, I get to check the temperatures in Ubuntu-Classic (gnome) via the
sensors-applet (some how they can still get temperatures from CPU and
HDD) and it is quite hot CPU=63C and HDD=53C, not sure if I can read the
GPU on this machine... but I think that is what is heating up the
system... the fan is running, not at full throttle (?) and I can cope
with the overheat for a while, with an external ventilation forcing air
into the notebook ;) but I hope its not the new default state

[Bug 766804] Re: there are missing icons in banshee menu, such as the Write CD one

2011-04-22 Thread PresuntoRJ
Is there an easy way (other than manually opening every single piece
of application) to verify if there are icons or any other information
missing from the Unity menu from anything installed in Ubuntu? I know
for a fact that not every app is compatible with Unity (they may keep
their menus inside the window no matter what).

That alone could be a major issue for users, one that might prevent the
default usage of Unity on any release anyway.

This has never happened in Maverick, or any other Ubuntu release before
that (since 8.04 on this same box), only in Natty, and at least twice (the
second time is the one I have filed the bug)

Re: [Bug 766804] Re: there are missing icons in banshee menu, such as the Write CD one

2011-04-21 Thread PresuntoRJ
well, the file
(/usr/share/banshee/icons/hicolor/48x48/actions/media-write-cd.png)
is there ... the icon remain not on the menu while in Unity... I will test
on Gnome (Ubuntu-Classic) ASAP. I will try to identify any other missing
icon in the meantime, but so far, the one that catch my attention was the
Write CD one, cause its there every time I play a song ;) (so far it
seems to be the only one)

By the waym the icon shows up just fine in the context menu when I right
click a song :-/ go figure

2011/4/20 Kamus kamu...@gmail.com

Seems like banshee losts that Icon for the menu option (at least when
you are running unity), however, I am not sure if this issue is related
to global menu or not (have you checked if with classic desktop it's
 same behaviour?)
