[Bug 783047] [NEW] most indicators fail to show under lubuntu
Public bug reported: when I am under lubuntu, indicators seems to fail constantly... from the Network keeping the unconnected state even when coneccetd, to wheather showing sometimes an invalid icon (black square, with a red slashed circle), even an empty space that I cannot understand which indicator should be there... not working also for ubuntuone-indicator or dropbox or cpufreq or sysmonitor... the only one that seems to constantly work so far is the caffeine. Is there any major differences for the indicator to work under Lubuntu ? Re: [Bug 783047] Re: most indicators fail to show under lubuntu
I have installed from an Ubuntu installation the meta-package lubuntu-desktop... therefore it already have the indicator-application and other possible dependencies. When I try to add the Indicator appletes in the panel they both disapear (indicator applets and notification area) rendering me nothing to show the icons... I have then, as I have already said, remove the indicator area from the panel and relogin to my system (which restart X) for the notification area to show up again, but, still, many indicator icons missing or problematic. So, it is not a solution. If there are any mandatory packages for it to work, they must be set as dependency in the lubuntu-desktop meta package anyway. 2011/5/15 Julien Lavergne julien.laver...@gmail.com Thanks for your bug report. [Bug 782322] [NEW] plugin iostat_ios looses track of its state
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: munin Plugin iostat_ios regularly loses track of its state and no longer plots a graph. In munin-node.log the following lines are logged: [8468] Error output from iostat_ios: [8468] Magic number checking on storable file failed at ../../lib/Storable.pm (autosplit into ../../lib/auto/Storable/_retrieve.al) line 380, at /etc/munin/plugins/iostat_ios line 218 [8468] Service 'iostat_ios' exited with status 255/0. I have been trying to get reproduce the bug to capture dmesg, i915_error_state and even backtraces from my gdm session, but I am not sure what triggers it yet. Re: [Bug 768558] Re: [STAGING] X wont start since the upgrade to 2.6.35-29-generic-pae
It makes no sense to consider this bug invalid! If there is a mandatory package for it to run (with GUI) it MUST be set on the deb itself as a dependency that MUST be installed so the installation process (apt-get install...) would also get it. Its a bug on the packaging (.deb) of the package. If its not supposed to be a dependency, there fore, not forcefully installed, that there is a BUG in the kernel package rendering it impossible to use in certain situations that must be fixed. Either way, there is a bug, or it would have worked as expected. 2011/5/12 Herton R. Krzesinski 768...@bugs.launchpad.net Ok, so I assume then this is either a missing linux-headers-generic issue, or something was bad and reinstalling the packages solved, not a real bug. [Bug 779514] [NEW] compiz is using too much memory really quickly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: unity After a really short uptime, when I am logged in my Natty box, under Unity, compiz start using A LOT of memory, up to a point that my system has to swap... it was never like this in previous Ubuntu versions, and not even on Beta2 of Natty. It seems to me it has started in a recent upgrade (after the Natty release) Historically (using since 8.04 on this machine) it has never passed over 5%, even when I was logged on for over a month. Today, I already had to reboot twice, cause it was impacting performance of many softwares (I guess due to increased IO), specially VMWarePlayer (3.1.4) and VirtualBox-ose (up to date with repositories). I have not noticed much of an impact in Apache2 or MySQL for now. My uptime is only two days and I had to end the session (logout) some twelve times since the boot... My current session is less than 25 minutes old and it already shows the compiz process (with Unity) using 8.8% of my RAM (of the 3.7G available) and pretty soon it will reach above 20% (as the last time I had to logout, and the impacts were kind of mitigated) and up to 45% (the worst case I have noticed looking at free -m and/or htop since my last dist-upgrade, when not even logging out seemed to improve my situation) I am not sure if it could be cause by some other package (or combination of packages I have installed), or some of the running applications (most of them, everyday tools I had for several releases), or some indicators I had manually set to run from the repository, PPA and third part (ubuntuone-indicator, weather-indicator, dropbox, caffeine, sysmonitor- indicator, cpufreq-indicator), but I am not sure how the would consume memory under the compiz process instead of theirs. quick question, does your grub start in graphics mode or as text in the console? any way, can you try to change the /etc/default/grub file so that the option GRUB_TERMINAL=console is not commented (removing the #) and then sudo grub2-update to apply the change? I have tried this in my system and it blinks a lot less during the boot, and I cold actually get to the X once - then I gave it up an removed (apt-get autoremove --purge) the kernel, headers and dkms In my case, the later reinstalation of those (kernel, headers and dmks) were suffice. 2011/5/3 Brad Figg brad.f...@canonical.com ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/768558 Title: [STAGING] X wont start since the upgrade to 2.6.35-29-generic-pae To unsubscribe from this bug, go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/768558/+subscribe -- Fábio Leitão ..-. .- -... .. --- .-.. . .. - .- --- ...-.- -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/768558 Title: [STAGING] X wont start since the upgrade to 2.6.35-29-generic-pae -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 775362] [NEW] I cannot forward chromium-browser X to another display via ssh
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: chromium-browser most applications are compatible with X redirection to another display... when I access another machine via ssh with -X as parameter, when I run a console application, I get the output to my terminal, as expected, and when I run a X application (GUI) I would expect it to show up in my local machine (the one I am accessing from). It ends up showing in the remote machine session (the machine I am accessing). I have found out it also fails with Google-Chrome (related to Chromium). I have not tried them all, but seems like what happened to me too... it used to work on the betas, now, sometimes it does, some times it does not... depends on what is going on, what applications are running, and even if they are restored or maximized, or which applications are opened together (for instance, I worked with focused in a gnome-terminal if it has libreoofice also running, but it does not work with the focus also in gnome-terminal, but the other app is chromium-browser)... pretty bizaar. 2011/5/2 Michael-250 681...@bugs.launchpad.net Actually I couldn't believe that this is a real bug, because SUPER+D was working for me since natty alpha ? (can't remember which release it was). I have a fresh install of natty desktop (64bit). And right now SUPER+D is not working anymore. At least not for all windows. [Bug 773864] [NEW] root crontab file has disapeard on my maverick box
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: cron I know for a fact hey ware there, cause a couple of days ago I had to edit (sudo crontab -l) to comment a few lines for a test I was doing (trying a new backup program). Today, when I was done testing, I wanted to uncomment the lines to roll back the old backup schedule and the crontab was empty... sudo crontab -e also indicated it empty and in /var/spool/cron/crontabs I have found only the users files, not the root one. Then, after I have cryed a little, I have found this post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10742514#post10742514 with someone describing the same issue, but in Lucid then I have posted this bug report. I am not sure if there is a workaround, a way to reproduce the symptoms, a way to get my crontab file back (my /var/spool where never backed up), or if there was a recent crontab upgrade during my testing... but I can tell I had to reboot a couple of times theese days, and never expected this to happen. ** Affects: cron (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/773864 Title: root crontab file has disapeard on my maverick box -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Your system appears to be encountering a segmentation fault in the X server, resulting in it crashing. gdm restarts an X session which is why you're returned to the login screen each time. The out of the blue nature of it is troubling. X segmentation faults are pretty rare and tend to occur only under specific circumstances. So there are *usually* steps to reproduce them. When there isn't, I start suspecting hardware faults such as bad memory chips. But let's assume it to be a software bug in X first. Can you collect a full backtrace? [Bug 771837] [NEW] xorg died (gracefully to login) but without ado
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I was using it normally (firefox, chrome, banshee, and also reading a PDF) when suddenly the X turned off, back to a textual background (as I would expected if I have pressed Ctrl+Alt+Bckspc, but I have not) and shortly after I was presented with the login screen again (gdm?) ... it has happened at least five time the last two weeks, but I was not sure if it was related with other issues I was also facing during the beta testing, but now I am sure it had nothing to do with anything else I was doing. The system is fully up to date (checked just after the issue, to be sure). I do not had a real step-by-step to reproduce the problem, as it seems to happen kind of out of the blue. Sice the first few times I have experience this issue I have installed a current kernel (not from apt-get) to try to solve something else (it did not seemed to have any influence on the current problem, as it happened before and after the upgrade anyway). I also suspect it might have something to do with intel drivers in xorg, but I am not skilled in x enough to even try this theory. I have managed to boot and get the GUI running when I attempted to fully remove the kernel and header files (linux-image-2.6.35-29-generic-pae, linux-image-2.6.35-29-generic, linux-headers-2.6.35-29-generic-pae, linux-headers-2.6.35-29-generic and linux-headers-2.6.35-29) and then reinstalling them, which has forced the dkms to readjust accordingly (what seems vital to nvidia drivers to work properly). I am not sure now if the dkms trigger have failed during the original attempt to upgrade (i do not remember), but it seems plausible. I am not sure yet if there are anything else missing on my system (I have been using the last kernel before that since the glitch presented) but I am typing right now from Google Chrome running just fine under Gnome, so it looks mostly fine. I will come back with more as I find out. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/768560 Title: X wont start since the upgrade to 2.6.35-29-generic-pae -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 756379] Re: the unity bar (on the left) keeps freezing
I was able to capture the screen, having the sidebar frozen... notice in the picture that the mouse is away (to the right side of the screen) and it is still opened... also, that I have nautilus running (maximized) and it show no triangle by its home icon... the bar simply wont go away (and usually there is no way to keep it from hiding) I had to remotely access (ssh) this box to get proper control over my system, since compiz --replace and unity --replace hadn`t accomplished anything close to what I had expected (paining my screen totally white was not my goal), and the reboot was mandatory Are there any log files I can try to post here to describe better my huge frustration with unity keeping me from actually using the system as disired? I doubt anyone moms (mine included) be able to understand the mess that Unity does to the usability ! Wasn`t it created for tiny screen (like netbooks)? [Bug 772153] [NEW] unity prevents me from being productive on my desktop
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: unity I will try to purge my frustrations with Unity so far, specially the ones I remember more vividly, in one huge bug report. I am not considering any instability, which happens a lot, but could be related to the beta state of it all. I consider most of this issues as regressions of user interaction with the system, overall ergonomics, and usability. Most are not paper cuts, but simply put, sound like a design and/or execution flaw. Don't get me wrong, I am all for change, specially the good ones, just not very keen on the bad ideas. 1) Unity was intended to help the use of precious screen area on tiny systems, like netbooks. In usually large screens (desktop and notebooks), its more disturbing than really useful... really far from what the idea had as an ideal. Besides that, most applications support F11 (or some other shortcut or menu option) to go to fullscreen anyway. 2) Information keeps disappearing or is kept hidden from the user who wants to control/monitor the system (no indicator equivalents to several gnome-applets must haves, such as, system-monitor or sensors) and the dam sidebar keeps hiding, and there is no way to prevent it, and several programs that are not able to display its icon (with status, and/or properties) when running, like dropbox... even the menus, now in the title bar, vanish when you move the mouse away, and you are left with the application name (when not maximized), or the filename/site title (when it is) 3) There is no easy way to accomplish several every-day tasks (such as getting to the desktop WITH MY MOUSE, Super+D is a keyboard shortcut to what is supposed to an icon somewhere; or not being able to set the number or geometry of workspaces; even running an installed application is now behind 5 to 8 mouse moves and clicks); or even glancing somewhere to know what applications are really running (you have to put your mouse where the side bar is, which keeps hidding no matter what), or even clicking in the left side of an running application, like a text editor or browser or file manager, without the dam sidebar popping up in your way (one probably end up moving an icon there accidentally, I have done it quite sometimes now) - even when you use the bottom panel auto- hidding, most applications have a status bar which kind of acts like a buffer between the accidental triggering of it most of the time... Ubuntu does not even have a windows edge anymore... so the left of any application is just a hover away to getting below the Unity bar. 4) There is not even a default behavior for applications to display their things, i.e. the coloring in the themes, the coloring of the icons (of running apps, and in the side bar, and lens, and everywhere) that sometimes are forced to black (or white) and some are kept colored; the menu that could end up in the title bar, or not (look at libre- office, for instance... maybe it keeps the menu in the window cause it does not fit it the title bar maybe, because, the title bar might not be the correct position for most menus) There are several others that don occur to me right now, probably because it does not hurt so much, but I have talked about them in freenode #ubuntu+1 when I have first realized A bad behavior is worst to not having a default state... there is no second chance to make a good first impression... specially in the default settings. Cause it is not the package we thought about, does not mean the issue is invalid, cause I keep getting the system in a frozen state 2011/4/25 Bryce Harrington 768...@bugs.launchpad.net You've got some weird wireless error messages in your dmesg. I wanted to check the temperature (in case the kernel was forcing something odd with the CPUs) but I have found out I am unable to collect temperature with acpi tools now (it used to work just fine, even with landscape-sysinfo, and its also gone) I can still see the speed step its keeping the processor though, via indicator-cpufreq, and it seemes quiet usual (the occasional oscillation to top speed, and then back to slowest or some middle clock) The battery information seems coherent too, the detection of power source and the estimated percentage (currently 97%) to discharge when not connected... but it does not show the estimated time to discharge or recharge (as it used to). Not sure if its kernel related or a incredible coincidence (since it was only the kernel that I have updated now).
