Public bug reported:

[Bug 1955298] [NEW] Add snap paths to fish config - otherwise snaps aren't available via desktop menu

2021-12-18 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:

For ubuntu packaging, please add snap paths to the fish config.
Otherwise, users who switch to fish lose any installed snaps from the
desktop menu. Please see:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/990071/why-do-snap-packages-disappear-
when-using-the-fish-shell

Fix:

When installing fish, ensure the default fish config contains:

```
[Bug 1955166] [NEW] Linphone shows chat icon with (1) overlaid, cannot view chat / annoying blinking systray icon
2021-12-17 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
Linphone has a systray icon which is blinking with a (1) overlay. It's
very annoying.
When I click on it, it brings up the linphone UI, which has a speech
bubble with a (1) on it. That's not immediately obvious, but it is
there. When I click on it, it just brings up the list of my SIP
accounts, but there's no obvious chat message to clear.
[Bug 1951571] [NEW] Profile menu doesn't allow you to sign in
2021-11-19 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
The profile menu in Chromium apparently has had the sign in
functionality disabled. When clicking "Add", Chrome takes you to a sign
in page. Chromium has you create/modify profile locally.
I presume this is Google specific code that can't be open sourced. If
that's the case, the UI should make it clear that the sync functionality
isn't available in Chromium - otherwise it looks like a bug to anybody
vaguely familiar with Chrome's sync (which after all is typically used
once in the lifetime of a browser install).
[Bug 1861232] [NEW] ubuntu-bug has missing text in two dialogs
2020-01-28 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
I ran ubuntu-bug update-manager.
The second and fourth dialogs that pop up just say "text".
While we're on the subject, Launchpad has been timing out submitting the
reports (or even getting past openid). I only persisted because I wanted
to get bug reports in, but you're very likely missing reports from users
because of the timeouts.
[Bug 1861231] [NEW] Update manager converts chromium to snap, pauses "pending restart"
2020-01-28 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
I ran update-manager to go from 18.04 to 19.10. It wanted to convert
chromium-browser to a snap. Apparently after it finished installing, it
then halted and displayed the message as attached in the photo. After 45
minutes I held my nose and rebooted, and luckily was able to recover the
rest of the installation via apt & dpkg, but this could just as easily
have bricked the system.
[Bug 1799946] Re: OpenJFX-11 does not work with OpenJDK-8
2019-11-20 Thread Reuben Firmin
I attempted to compile JFX 8 from source manually, but it errors out.
Can somebody try this and see if you can get any further? (I'm on
19.10).
```
# based on https://wiki.openjdk.java.net/display/OpenJFX/Building+OpenJFX, with
updated gstreamer deps
sudo apt-get install ksh bison flex gperf libasound2-dev libgl1-mesa-dev \
libgstreamer1.0-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-dev libjpeg-dev \
libpng-dev libx11-dev libxml2-dev libxslt1-dev libxt-dev \
libxxf86vm-dev pkg-config x11proto-core-dev \
x11proto-xf86vidmode-dev libavcodec-dev mercurial \
libgtk2.0-dev libgtk-3-dev \
libxtst-dev libudev-dev libavformat-dev cmake ruby

# most recent openjfx 8 build. theoretically openjfx 9 is compatible
with jdk N-1
(https://wiki.openjdk.java.net/display/OpenJFX/Building+OpenJFX
#BuildingOpenJFX-OpenJDK), but their gradle build blocks 9 from
compiling on openjdk 8

git clone --branch 8u51-b09 https://github.com/openjdk/jfx.git

# their build requires gradle 1.8, which is from 2013 :(

# download 1.8 from: https://gradle.org/releases/

cd jfx
~/Downloads/gradle-1.8/bin/gradle
```
After doing this, I get:
```
FAILURE: Build failed with an exception.

* What went wrong:
Execution failed for task ':graphics:ccLinuxGlass'.
> Could not call NativeCompileTask.compile() on task ':graphics:ccLinuxGlass'
```
Googling for this error takes me to:
http://mail.openjdk.java.net/pipermail/openjfx-
dev/2015-April/017156.html
I have a much more recent version of gcc than the answer references, so
it _seems_ like this shouldn't be an issue. But it appears that OpenJDK
8 that's installed on Ubuntu 19.10 was probably built using an older
version of gcc without this header? Is there a workaround short of
compiling OpenJDK 8?
[Bug 1649727] Re: No sound card detected with device: Intel Corporation Device 9d71
2016-12-15 Thread Reuben Firmin
I spoke too soon. Sound was working the first time I switched from 4.9
to 4.4, though volume couldn't be changed in the UI.
However, after I rebooted again (4.4 -> 4.4) I never got sound to work
again.
I'm now returning the laptop (for this and other reasons - e.g. battery
life sucks) so I can't be any further assistance on this.
I went back to 4.4.0 - sound works. It doesn't work in 4.8 or 4.9.
Hello. See original comment - they are attached.
Apport is not working on the affected laptop. It opens chrome with a
blank tab and does nothing further.
[Bug 1649727] [NEW] No sound card detected with device: Intel Corporation Device 9d71
2016-12-13 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
On a new Dell Inspiron i5378-2885GRY, the sound device is not detected
by alsa, and the UI mixer shows a "Dummy" sound card. I've attached the
ubuntu-bug dump for the laptop.
I confirmed that snd- modules are loaded.
The sound card is detected by lshw and lspci. It's a Intel Corporation
Device 9d71.
Fastboot is not enabled; boot is "thorough".
The sound card *did* work on two separate occasions - i.e. was detected
successfully. On all subsequent boots it is not detected.
See also bugs 1641028 and 1649668. Googling for this device also shows a
smattering of other problems that people are having with it.
[Bug 1547286] Re: 16.04 installer can't get past "Force UEFI installation"
2016-09-30 Thread Reuben Firmin
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1418706 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1418706
Can confirm, this is related to "Download updates". Without this option
selected (and wifi off, if that matters), you still get the dialog, but
this time the buttons are functional.
Note, this bug is _not_ a duplicate of #1418706 -- I encountered it on a
brand new Dell laptop with Windows 10 on the drive, so it has nothing to
do with the drive being blank.
[Bug 283477] Re: ecryptfs-utils does not handle changing password
2016-07-31 Thread Reuben Firmin
Same issue here. KDE's screen lock had crashed, so I dropped to the
command line. I fat fingered my password into the user field after
getting it wrong initially, so the first thing I did once I got a shell
was to change my password.
I then rebooted, upon which I got:
Jul 31 08:02:01 void ecryptfs-insert-wrapped-passphrase-into-keyring: Incorrect
wrapping key for file [/home/reuben/.ecryptfs/wrapped-passphrase]
Jul 31 08:02:01 void ecryptfs-insert-wrapped-passphrase-into-keyring: Error
I then changed my password back to what it was, rebooted, and this time
it was able to wrap the key.
[Bug 1577367] [NEW] Repeated flickers in chromium (with skylake)
2016-05-02 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
This affects chromium and chrome. As you click around inside or between
tabs, you get repeated strobing which is disconcerting and borderline
unusable.
Disabling GPU altogether breaks rendering in many cases (for example,
buttons become badly "torn").
The "solution" is to add the flags described here, i.e.: --disable-gpu-
driver-bug-workarounds --enable-native-gpu-memory-buffers
[Bug 1520933] [NEW] Lightdm should show login on active monitor
2015-11-29 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
I have a laptop with a small screen, and a large monitor that I use
while at home. If I plug in the monitor from boot and close the laptop
lid, I'll see the entire boot process on the large monitor; however,
when lightdm fires up, it displays the login widgetry on the (closed)
laptop monitor.
It should be enhanced to detect that the primary monitor is not active,
and display on the secondary monitor if this is the case.
[Bug 1520932] [NEW] Installing kubuntu-desktop should not change fonts/desktop settings in unity
2015-11-29 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
I installed kubuntu-desktop to check out the state of KDE. Finding much lack of
polish, I came back to unity, only to find that:
a) all of my fonts had been changed
b) desktop shortcuts didn't work
c) the wallpaper in the unity environment didn't work
Removing the gtkrc file and restarting unity restored many of these,
although I'm still working on fixing fonts.
Installing kubuntu-desktop should not touch unity.
[Bug 1285861] [NEW] Gnome-shell intermittently locks up (13.10)
2014-02-27 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
This is likely related to #1184451. Filing bug per Christopher's request
in there, so that you can see my hardware.
Periodically (2-3 times a day) gnome will partially lock up. I can still
move the mouse around, but clicks are not registered. Sound continues
playing. I can't alt-tab. I believe ctrl alt f2 does not work, but I
need to verify that next time around.
Pressing ctrl alt backspace starts to restart X (windows  decorations
are wiped, but the frames are still visible; sound cuts out; the mouse
cursor is no longer visible) but then the PC hard lock. Ctrl alt
backspace works usually.
I'm going to change to the proprietary nvidia drivers per suggestions in
#1184451. Hopefully that'll do the trick.
Happened again. Hadn't restarted since switching to nvidia-current, so
probably nouveau was still active.
Was unable to ctrl alt-f2 (on a wireless USB keyboard, so perhaps that
had something to do with it.)
[Bug 1137800] [NEW] Cannot swap win/control keys in settings
2013-03-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
I use OSX at work, so I bought a logitech keyboard made for macs to use
at home so that the keys are in a consistent position. Rather than try
to bend OSX to my will, I though it would be easier to map the keys in
KDE to the OSX positions; however this does not seem to be possible.
The windows key (keycode 133, left of the spacebar) is the equivalent
of the control key in OSX. I would like to switch it and left control
(keycode 37) so that all applicaitons follow the new layout. (Both my
IDE and KDE allows fine grained shortcut remapping, but I also need the
keymap to apply in the browser, etc - so the KDE settings should be
flexible enough to allow this.)
Current relevant options are:
Control is mapped to Win keys (and the usual Ctrl Keys)  -- this gets me
halfway there, but leaves me with only two special keys on the left,
since key 133 becomes a duplicate of key 37.
Left ctrl as Meta -- if this overrode the parentheses of the previous
option, the combination of these two settings would be a workable
configuration; however it does not -- with both selected, keys 64 and 37
are both mapped to Alt_L.
[Bug 947430] Re: Clicking on bubbles in KDE telepathy notifications doesn't work
2013-03-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
Same here. There are two notification icons in which new message
notifications sometimes appear:
1) The envelope, which gets a star. When I click on this the message
pops up accurately in a telepathy window.
2) The (i) icon, which when I click on it pops up a notification box
with the no-op respond button.
Version: 0.5.1. Very annoying.
Ah, well I mistook the source of my __git_ps1, my bad.
My /etc/bash.bashrc does contain the bash_completion hook, and
bash_completion is working. However unless I explicitly source
/etc/bash_completion.d/git-prompt in my bashrc, I get the error about
__git_ps1 not being found.
[Bug 1088960] Re: Missing __git_ps1
2012-12-11 Thread Reuben Firmin
Actually I was using the stock git prior to trying your ppa. When
ubuntu-bug didn't let me file a bug against git, I decided to try your
ppa.
Wit a second, though. In /etc/bash.bashrc, now that I look at it
with a skeptical eye, I see:
# enable bash completion in interactive shells
#if ! shopt -oq posix; then
#  if [ -f /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion ]; then
#. /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion
#  elif [ -f /etc/bash_completion ]; then
#. /etc/bash_completion
#  fi
#fi
I did a stock install of kubuntu 3 days ago and haven't edited that
file. So my glib assertion above about bash completion working was based
on a misunderstanding of what /etc/bash_completion provides...I guess? I
mean when I tab on the command prompt, filenames are completed,
potential files are listed, etc...is that not one and the same thing?
How does that work given that the above is commented out?
My own ~/.bashrc is trivial; a few env variable exports, and a custom
PS1.
[Bug 1088210] [NEW] resolv.conf is not populated with nameserver configuration from dhcp
2012-12-09 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
After a fresh install of Kubuntu 12.10, my resolv.conf remains
stubbornly empty. I have tried manually setting the DNS server via the
network manager UI (which doesn't work); I tried turning off dnsmasq in
the network manager configuration (which didn't work); I tried dpkg-
reconfigure to set resolveconf to auto (which didn't work); and finally
I edited resolvconf.d/head with my nameserver, which works.
I see the DHCP info arrive in syslog, with a nameserver, but it is never
written.
[Bug 1088212] [NEW] Installer misconfigures grub configuration
2012-12-09 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
I did a fresh install of Kubuntu 12.10 from DVD. After booting, grub
surfaced an error message file not found, and a rescue prompt. I
googled for a fix, and ran boot-repair per instructions here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/187862/after-update-get-error-file-not-
found-followed-by-grub-rescue
I do have four hard drives, and it looks a lot like the installer put
the boot config somewhere that grub did not expect it to be. However, if
boot-repair can fix it, the installer should be smarter out of the box
and ensure that boot is possible.
[Bug 1088213] [NEW] ubuntu-bug crashes under kubuntu
2012-12-09 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
A couple of ways to make it crash, under kubuntu:
1) -
ubuntu-bug network-manager
It pops up a prompt: It seems you have modified the contents of
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf.  Would you like to add the
contents of it to your bug report?
If I click yes, it crashes with:
[Bug 1088214] [NEW] Custom key combos to switch left and right virtual desktops don't work
2012-12-09 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
I can switch to specific virtual desktops via ctrl f1 and ctrl f2.
However I just want to switch left/right (to emulate the OSX style full
screen tiles). I configured keyboard shortcuts meta + left and meta +
right via the system settings; however they don't do anything. I also
tried ctrl + alt + left / ctrl + alt + right, again with no effect.
Mistook left and right for next and previous. Did not occur to
me that desktops would be in a grid. Perhaps a minor usability issue,
but not a bug.
[Bug 1037196] [NEW] Set network proxy to none, yet http_proxy env var is still set in bash after new login
2012-08-15 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
I configured a proxy using gnome-control-center (launched via the proxy
config in chromium). I then changed it to none. After several
restarts, the http_proxy environment variable is _still_ set to what I'd
set it to. I had to add lines to my .bashrc to unset it. In gconf, it
appears that the http_proxy values are blank. I don't see it stashed
elsewhere in any of the environment related files, but it must still be
somewhere.
See  https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096 - much wider discussion
there. So far ubuntu 2D has been the only reliable recourse for me.
[Bug 1002254] [NEW] Cannot connect to configured VPN
2012-05-21 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
This may be specific to the KDE network manager. When I click on the VPN
[Bug 1002254] Re: Cannot connect to configured VPN
Confirmed, this is specific to KDE network manager. It works fine in
gnome.
** Package changed: network-manager (Ubuntu) = networkmanagement
[Bug 1002254] Re: Cannot connect to configured VPN
2012-05-21 Thread Reuben Firmin
More details:
All of the above was with a VPN connection configured within network-
manager-gnome. So, there is incompatibility in the profile that it
saves. If you don't want to deal with the incompatibility, don't display
it.
I added a new VPNC configuration using KDE's interface to do so. With
this one, I consistently get the dialog prompting me to enter the
password when I click on it (or at least I did until I clicked on the
old 'xxx' one, after which neither works again.) However, in syslog
there are yet more errors:
Further, while network-manager-vpnc was able to import the conf file,
network-manager-kde is not. It gives me the error message xxx is not a
valid OpenVPN's [sic] client configuration file.
How did this version make it past your QA process?
[Bug 924364] Re: Muon Updater does not show package name, version information
2012-05-16 Thread Reuben Firmin
Please bump this out of wishlist. It is a bug, not a desired feature.
As configured, I can't tell what is going to be installed on my system
when I accept an update.
Utilities to configure the GNOME desktop - great, what is that? Try
googling for that and finding me the project page. Where can I see the
source code? Where can I see the new commits that are included in this
version?
or
Open source social networking client for GNOME
event logging framework
System sound indicator
I get that this feature is supposed to make the update notifier more
friendly for non technical users, but until packages have consistently
useful descriptions the display absolutely needs to include the package
name in a third column; without it the updater is missing critical
functionality. Until then I will rely on apt for updates.
[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash
2012-05-15 Thread Reuben Firmin
I have had success running ubuntu 2D to avoid this. However I finally
got annoyed enough with other bugs in 2D that I switched to KDE, which
runs like a champ (although the default fonts need to be replaced first
thing after install.) So I suspect Unity/Compiz is doing something the
nvidia driver does not expect, given that both 2D and KDE are stable
with the same driver.
[Bug 999623] [NEW] Default fonts on Kubuntu desktop are much lesser quality than default Ubuntu desktop
2012-05-15 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
This is a bug, not a wishlist. The default fonts on kubuntu are
objectively more jagged and less clear than the setup in ubuntu-desktop.
Further, the fonts in various applications such as chromium, as well as
general GTK apps, are particularly bad.
I would suggest:
* set liberation fonts as defaults across the system
* turn anti aliasing and sub hinting on by default (if it is not already)
* fix freetype config so that chromium displays properly
As a general question, does Kubuntu have a policy on default theming?
Having been forced off Unity by a serious bug in the way it interacts
with nvidia, I've been forced to spend some time customizing Kubuntu. I
suggest that the default install contain more customization that it
currently does to make the first impression of casual installers much
better. I am willing to participate in this effort if useful.
[Bug 999631] [NEW] Kopete does not connect to accounts after restart
2012-05-15 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
I set up four accounts in Kopete (AIM, Yahoo, two XMPP). These were
connected and working fine. I then restarted KDE via Ctrl Alt X. Now
when I start Kopete, none of the accounts sign in. I cannot find
anywhere in the UI to force them to sign in. I've tried checking and
unchecking them in the accounts list, to no avail. I tried retyping my
password into the accounts settings box, which yielded an error message
[Bug 999635] [NEW] Synapse does not remember /usr/bin/symlink invocations
2012-05-15 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
I have a symlink in /usr/bin set up as follows:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root27 Apr 30 07:44 /usr/bin/idea -
/usr/local/idea/bin/idea.sh
If I type idea into synapse, it pops up a text editor with the text of
the script. If I type /usr/bin/idea it runs the script. Even if I've
typed /usr/bin/idea previously, it does not remember that this is a
script I run regularly and let me type idea in future.
I don't want to have to create a .desktop entry for this; it's a command
which synapse should be able to pick up and remember.
[Bug 999632] [NEW] Dragging tab from chromium no longer creates a new window in KDE or Ubuntu; cannot drop it onto chromium windows either
2012-05-15 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
Chromium used to allow you to drag a tab and either
a) drop it on the desktop to create a new chromium window
b) drop it on a chromium window to add it to that window
Neither option works now in either unity or KDE. In KDE it's
particularly bad, as the being-dragged window sticks to the mouse
cursor, making most mouse operations impossible.
[Bug 991878] Re: X restarts intermittently when flash is running in chromium since upgrade to precise
I can't use nouveau because the fonts are crappy on my setup.
I switched to version current-updates of the nv driver, and found it to
be more stable (but to still have the problem.) I then switched to
Ubuntu 2d, and so far haven't had the issue reoccur.
[Bug 992543] Re: 0.5.3r512 cannot be built with dpkg-buildpackage due to unexpected upstream changes
2012-05-01 Thread Reuben Firmin
That's fine (and I will look into it), but did this deliberately change
between 0.5.3r449 and 0.5.3r512? Surely there were patches in r449 that
did not trip up buildpackage.
Per my description, the buildpackage route worked fine on 0.5.3r449.
Reopening just to get an answer for this. If yes then I don't think
there's an issue. If no can you explain why there's a difference?
Perhaps this indicates a bug in some other library?
[Bug 991878] [NEW] X restarts intermittently since upgrade to precise
2012-04-30 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
This has happened three times to me since I upgraded to Precise on
Friday eve (3 days ago).
On one occasion I was watching a flash video; on the others I was just
browsing the web.
This does not happen by itself; I leave the computer running overnight,
and my lock screen is always present when I wake it up in the morning.
Let me know if you need more info to debug.
This happened again while watching a flash video. I wonder if the
previous occasions also had flash running on the page. Seems like it may
be a bad interaction between flash, nvidia  xorg perhaps?
I can no longer reproduce this on 12.04. Unfortunately my hard drive
issue again.
[Bug 926042] Re: Graphical environment becomes laggy and then freezes under high load
2012-04-23 Thread Reuben Firmin
This actually seems to be a compiz issue.
I noticed that while compiling a complex GWT project, I'd encounter a
load average of 15 or so, and my system would freeze up with similar
symptoms as I originally described. Running htop the resource using
processes were all java, although I saw compiz in there at about 1% CPU.
As an experiment I switched to ubuntu 2d. Instant fix. The same compile
leaves my UI completely responsive, even though the load average is the
same.
[Bug 952893] [NEW] Zookeeper script contains invalid check for cygwin
2012-03-12 Thread Reuben Firmin
[Bug 926042] [NEW] Graphical environment becomes laggy and then freezes under high load
2012-02-03 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
I'm a developer, so I often run two IDEs, have music playing (either
flash or via rhythmbox), 15 or 20 chromium tabs open, postgres running,
and one or two java webapps running. As you can imagine, this can create
high load. Once I hit 99% load (as indicated by the CPU monitor
screenlet, at least), my system effectively freezes up; the mouse stops
moving (it becomes laggy anywhere over 95%), music stops playing, the
hard disks stop spinning/seeking (at least audibly), windows dim
(showing that they're inactive), and my PC effectively becomes a brick.
I've waited 10 or 15 minutes under these circumstances with nothing
resurrecting itself; the only reliable way to recover is to sysrq eub
(which always works, so this is not a kernel lock of some sort).
Just to preempt a possible response, I don't think do less is an
acceptable answer here. I have a quad core PC with 4GB of RAM and a
512MB GPU; it's not the most recent machine ever, but it's not shabby
either. (I also experience the same issue on my dual core laptop with
SSDs.) It's the 21st century; I shouldn't be experiencing freezeup by
pushing my computer to the max; if this isn't a bug (which it may well
be), then it should be a high priority feature to make process
management better on the desktop. The UI should always take priority on
desktop installs.
[Bug 926066] [NEW] Banshee playlist based on path / rating loses song after path fixing
2012-02-03 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
I have a playlist set up to play songs from path /music/rip (where
I've ripped my CDs), mixed with songs I've rated 4 or 5 stars. I like
the fact that Banshee can reoriganize my music collection folder
structure, so I have that feature turned on. Thus as soon as Banshee
starts playing a song that hasn't been rated but is in the given path,
and then moves the file, it disappears from the playlist view (because
the path has changed), meaning that I'm unable to rate it.
I can workaround this by adding an or played in last 10 mins, but it's
a UX issue that should be fixed. Perhaps something as simple as the
currently playing song should never be excluded from the playlist view
works, but there might be side effects with that.
[Bug 917152] [NEW] nautilus has to build search index for the first search, doesn't warn user what's happening
2012-01-16 Thread Reuben Firmin
Public bug reported:
My downloads directory has 1177 files in it. With nautilus opened on
Downloads, I press ctrl F, and type any word. Initial search takes 10+
seconds (presumably to build the index?) Subsequent searches are fast
enough to be useful.
The initial time is a problem, because nautilus does not report to the
user what it's doing. Most non technical users will give up, and close
the window, believing that nautilus search is slow, and probably won't
reuse search.
Multiple approaches to fixing this could be taken; e.g. background build
of indices, or just better user messaging (Because this is the first
time you've used search, we need to create an index. Your future
searches will be fast.)
[Bug 917152] Re: nautilus has to build search index for the first search, doesn't warn user what's happening
2012-01-16 Thread Reuben Firmin
Sorry, I really think this is a bug.
Searching 1177 titles should take less than 1 second, even reading them
off disk. It's not wishlist to say that 10+ seconds is too slow.
ls can read the directory contents in 0.033s. If you're telling me that
it waits to display items until it has also scanned all of their
contents, then that's also a bug. It should display results as it finds
them, and any logical implementation of this would display title results
first.
[Bug 773751] Re: With nvidia twinview, unity right snap happens only on the right of the right monitor
2011-08-15 Thread Reuben Firmin
Frankly I find it mind boggling that the Unity project doesn't have a
dual monitor nvidia system to test with. It seems at minimum you should
have NVIDIA, ATI and Intel single and dual monitor configurations.
Anyway, yes - left on left works, and right on right works. However, the
snap is ignorant of the right side of the left monitor and the left side
of the right monitor.
[Bug 776803] Re: Natty does not shut down cleanly (enough for my BIOS)
2011-07-02 Thread Reuben Firmin
Here's some additional information:
The message actually refers to failed startup; this seems to be because
the shutdown leaves it in an invalid state. When it's in this state, the
BIOS loading screen comes up briefly, goes away, and comes back - hence
the failed startup.
If I shutdown using alt sysrq e u b, the next startup is fine.
[Bug 776803] Re: Natty does not shut down cleanly (enough for my BIOS)
2011-07-02 Thread Reuben Firmin
@Haedri mostly confirmed.
1) Reboot either from GDM or Unity menu.
2a) If I go into BIOS, it reboots by itself after about 1 minute.
2b) If I let it boot, it gets to a purple screen, which stays blank (grub or
plymouth?) for about 20 seconds, and then reboots itself.
3) On this boot, I get the grub menu (which I usually don't see). I hit
the default, and it boots successfully.
I do not get this partial bootup behaviour on normal startup.
I also retested my earlier Unity vs GDM shutdown assertion, which I can
no longer reproduce :( ... I'm sure I saw the behaviour as described,
but I think I misattributed it. So I don't believe this is a Unity bug
any longer. Seems more likely that this is a gnome issue in general. I
will try some other experiments.
Not a gnome issue either.
sudo reboot from within Gnome terminal has the same behaviour as above.
sudo reboot from a safe mode boot (i.e. boot to console) ALSO has the same
behaviour.
[Bug 776803] Re: Natty does not shut down cleanly (enough for my BIOS)
2011-07-02 Thread Reuben Firmin
Next experiment:
sudo shutdown now (from either within Gnome terminal or from a safe
mode boot) leads to the recovery menu, not to shutdown. If I click
resume boot from the recovery menu, it gets to the last stage before
it would normally give me a prompt (checking battery state) and freezes.
Unity folks, sorry for the misdiagnosis. Please reassign as you see fit.
[Bug 776803] Re: Natty does not shut down cleanly (enough for my BIOS)
2011-06-21 Thread Reuben Firmin
Yes.
This appears to be a unity bug. Shutting down from GDM does not result
in the complaint from the BIOS. The shutdown from the unity menu shuts
down the computer extremely fast (3s); I don't see the purple plymouth
screen. The shutdown from the GDM menu takes in the order of 10s, and I
see the plymouth screen with the shutdown dots.
Ergo I think the fix is to change whatever shutdown routine the unity
menu calls to either delegate to the GDM routine, or to do substantially
the same thing.
