Thanks for the prompt response Pedro. It would help if you clarify my next
logical question:
How is one supposed to use the Trash feature in ubuntu? Is it currently meant
only for the purpose of

2009-08-04 Thread Sancho Panza
A similar bug has been fixed in KDE/Kubuntu and is discussed here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/228369

Using all the links to code above and the Kubuntu bugfix, it doesnt seem like
fixing this bug in Ubuntu/Nautilus
should take too long for a programmer (unfortunately I'm not, so maybe I'm
wrong). This bug is really a nuisance
for people who need to empty trash often without having to delete the recently
trashed files.
Is this still a non-trivial fix? Is it still not qualified to be a papercut?

[Bug 200127] Re: ubuntu incorrectly believes I enjoy staring at progress bars

2009-06-19 Thread Sancho Panza
Based on some of the comments, looks like some people might be quite interested
in what the updater is
doing, especially people who'd like to disconnect the network as soon as the
downloads are done, or if you'd
like to restart any of the programs.

I propose this: Add check box(es) in the update manager window that allow user
to
(1) specify whether the update manager minimizes to notif area and does its
thing quitely and
(2) also specify whether it should automatically close when all updates are
successfully installed.

The update manager already uses the notif area to inform the user about updates
so I'm hoping
that making the above changes should only involve minimal coding.

[Bug 200127] Re: ubuntu incorrectly believes I enjoy staring at progress bars

2009-06-18 Thread Sancho Panza
Dave, I agree with Steve and it is not exactly a duplicate. Here's why:
Once the update manager has been instructed to install updates, it almost all
the
time does its job without requiring the users inputs at all. So I dont see any
point
in having a separate window dedicated to update manager which keeps blinking
when
it switches from downloading to installing files. An unobtrusive notification
icon should
work well.

Also, once it is done successfully installing all updates, the only available
buttons for a user to push are check for updates and close. If the system
has
just finished updates, why would a user want to immediately check for more
updates?
If so, why does it sit around waiting for me to just click the close button
(there is
nothing else a user can do with that window)?

What I'm suggesting is once the user has clicked the install updates button,
minimize
update managers to the notif area and if everything goes well, display a notif
bubble for a coupla
seconds. Bother the user only if something has not gone right with the updates.

[Bug 372132] Re: Create Document Templates

2009-06-16 Thread Sancho Panza
The justification for marking this bug as invalid in Nautilus is
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/372132/comments/3):
the rational to have no template by default is that the choice of what
to put there is an user one and upstream is against giving a way for
applications to put tons of useless items in there for most users.

If that is the rationale, how does one justify the confusion or
frustration it creates to users as given in the bug description? Using
the right-click menu if one creates a new document, renames it with the
extension of one's choice, and opens it with the appropriate software,
just does not work. Nor is it clear as to how one is supposed to
create/add new templates. If the designers are against putting useless
templates in there, at least provide a straightforward means to add new
templates.

I have been going thru some of the bugs (and filing some myself) and
have seen many bugs rejected as not paper cut worthy. If this does not
meet ALL the requirements of being a paper cut, I dont know what does.
Please clarify which specific criteria this bug fails to not qualify as
a paper cut.

[Bug 301552] Re: in trash: show delete-date

2009-06-15 Thread Sancho Panza
I cannot comment on whether this is trivially fixable or not, but as an
end user I find the Trash feature practically useless if I cannot clean
out large quantities of trash (automatically or manually) periodically.
Knowing the delete date is vital to achieving this (and is not a feature
request, but a vital flaw in functionality), in my opinion. But then its
just my opinion.

Thanks for the quick response, dave.

always have to use Ctrl-T
to open a new tab or click thru the menus to open a new tab. How about adding a
new new tab button
to the Nautilus toolbar which would open a new tabbed Nautilus window?

[Bug 217908] Re: Pixellated Images in Firefox/Opera due to incorrect EXTEND_PAD implementation in several video drivers

2009-02-11 Thread Sancho Panza
Hey Tom, this bug that I had fixed using the patches in your PPA has
resurfaced again after the ubuntu firefox update that happened today.
It looks like the xulrunner package has been updated and I'm not able
to force it to your version without breaking dependencies. The cairo
and pixman files are still your versions.
Any suggestions?

[Bug 217908] Re: Pixellated Images in Firefox/Opera due to incorrect EXTEND_PAD implementation in several video drivers

2009-01-27 Thread Sancho Panza
I just wanted to point out that the same (page-zoom) issue that exists in Opera
is
still the same even though it has been fixed in Firefox. I was initially under
the
impression that the page-zoom-image-distortion issue in both browsers was
related,
simply bcos the poorly zoomed images in both browsers displayed similar
symptoms/artifacts.

So I guess the two issues are unrelated, and maybe we should separate them as
two
different bugs instead of one.

[Bug 217908] Re: Images in Firefox and Opera are extremely pixeled when zoomed

2008-12-02 Thread Sancho Panza
Why is the importance of this bug set to 'wishlist'? Isnt this something that
is not working the way it is intended to, rather than a feature request?Having
the page zoom functionality would be a wishlist, but asking for a broken page
zoom functionality to be fixed would be a proper bug (Low priority, maybe).
Is a wishlist simply because, strictly speaking, the bug affects a feature
that one can live without? I (and many others using high ppi displays) would
like to disagree bcos it can sometimes be really hard to read webpages
(designed for standard 96ppi displays) without zooming. And with more people
having high ppi displays nowadays, it is not a wishlist anymore, but an
accessibility issue.
But one rather curious point that I would like to bring to the attention of
whoever is working on the bug is my comment above:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/217908/comments/26
It gives me an impression that the bug fix might be easier to fix that I
imagine it to be. But I'm no developer and I could not know for sure.

[Bug 217908] Re: Images in Firefox and Opera are extremely pixeled when zoomed

2008-10-11 Thread Sancho Panza
@Bryce, thank you so much for your time. I trying for so long to get some
response on this.
I a relative noob and am not into coding, so I can't compare actual codes and
the like. My comments are based on what I have read on forums and mailing
lists. Based on that and my personal experience, here are the answers to your
queries:

* On the comment here https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=422179#c9
says
Mozilla doesn't scale the images at all -- we hand off the image and a
transform to RENDER,
which needs to do the scaling. The issue is that the
version of pixman that's currently shipped with all X servers doesn't implement
EXTEND_PAD, which we need to get correct behaviour at image edges.
* And here http://blog.vlad1.com/2008/03/18/a-little-more-cairo-just-for-you/
which says Linux users will have to wait a little longer to get higher quality
image scaling; as we now rely on the X server to do image compositing through
the Render extension, we'll have to wait until the pixman patches are
integrated into the X server. I'm hoping that will happen in time for the next
X.org release.
* And the release of the library pixman(
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg-announce/2008-March/000529.html )
makes reference to modifications in the EXTEND_PAD.
* Related comparison of graphics renderings on winXP and ubuntu hardy are here:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2162/2481984708_dedc30e9df_o.png
* This poll on Ubuntu forums indicates that 45 of 56 voters had this issue on
intrepid as of today http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=867161

These are the pieces that I used to guess that the bug might be fixed upstream.
Thats the best I could do.
I'm aware that latest Intrepid and Fedora10 beta use the latest xorg packages
but dont seem to have this bug fixed.
Based on the above info, I also assumed that it had nothing to do with the
graphics card.

My Xorg log is attached.

here http://blog.vlad1.com/2008/03/18/a-little-more-cairo-just-for-you/ and the
release of the
library pixman(
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg-announce/2008-March/000529.html ),
seems like the issue might be resolved by using that version of pixman at
freedesktop. Could this be released as
a patch for hardy? Or would it involve complicated dependency issues and stuff?

If not, is there any way I could fix this on my system? If so, how?

Thanks,

[Bug 217908] Re: Images in Firefox are extremely pixeled when zoomed

2008-07-09 Thread Sancho Panza
@ubuntu demon: The issue is discussed here:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=422179
and not the bug that you mentioned.

vlad says about the bug
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=422179#c9) that
Mozilla doesn't scale the images at all -- we hand off the image and a
transform to RENDER,
which needs to do the scaling. The issue is that the
version of pixman that's currently shipped with all X servers doesn't implement
EXTEND_PAD, which we need to get correct behaviour at image edges.

I'm a noob, and this bug is really bothering me. I have my account of the
problems on ubuntuforums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=841739

Please help.
