A similar bug has been fixed in KDE/Kubuntu and is discussed here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/228369 Using all the links to code above and the Kubuntu bugfix, it doesnt seem like fixing this bug in Ubuntu/Nautilus should take too long for a programmer (unfortunately I'm not, so maybe I'm wrong). [Bug 200127] Re: ubuntu incorrectly believes I enjoy staring at progress bars
Based on some of the comments, looks like some people might be quite interested in what the updater is doing, especially people who'd like to disconnect the network as soon as the downloads are done, or if you'd like to restart any of the programs. I propose this: Add check box(es) in the update manager window that allow user to (1) specify whether the update manager minimizes to notif area and does its thing quitely and (2) also specify whether it should automatically close when all updates are successfully installed. The update manager already uses the notif area to inform the user about updates so I'm hoping that making the above changes should only involve minimal coding. -- ubuntu incorrectly believes I enjoy staring at progress bars https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200127 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 200127] Re: ubuntu incorrectly believes I enjoy staring at progress bars
Dave, I agree with Steve and it is not exactly a duplicate. Here's why: Once the update manager has been instructed to install updates, it almost all the time does its job without requiring the users inputs at all. So I dont see any point in having a separate window dedicated to update manager which keeps blinking when it switches from downloading to installing files. An unobtrusive notification icon should work well. Also, once it is done successfully installing all updates, the only available buttons for a user to push are check for updates and close. If the system has just finished updates, why would a user want to immediately check for more updates? If so, why does it sit around waiting for me to just click the close button (there is nothing else a user can do with that window)? What I'm suggesting is once the user has clicked the install updates button, minimize update managers to the notif area and if everything goes well, display a notif bubble for a coupla seconds. Bother the user only if something has not gone right with the updates. -- ubuntu incorrectly believes I enjoy staring at progress bars https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200127 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 372132] Re: Create Document Templates
The justification for marking this bug as invalid in Nautilus is (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/372132/comments/3): the rational to have no template by default is that the choice of what to put there is an user one and upstream is against giving a way for applications to put tons of useless items in there for most users. If that is the rationale, how does one justify the confusion or frustration it creates to users as given in the bug description? Using the right-click menu if one creates a new document, renames it with the extension of one's choice, and opens it with the appropriate software, just does not work. Nor is it clear as to how one is supposed to create/add new templates. If the designers are against putting useless templates in there, at least provide a straightforward means to add new templates. I have been going thru some of the bugs (and filing some myself) and have seen many bugs rejected as not paper cut worthy. If this does not meet ALL the requirements of being a paper cut, I dont know what does. [Bug 217908] Re: Images in Firefox and Opera are extremely pixeled when zoomed
Thanks Tom, for all your effort in pushing this. I did run the test (without any of the patches you listed in earlier posts) and my output is: Testing repeat mode none: PASS Testing repeat mode normal: PASS Testing repeat mode pad: PASS Testing repeat mode reflect: *** FAIL *** 60 pixels differ from expected result. Expected output written to repeat-test-reflect-expected.png Actual output written to repeat-test-reflect-out.png I have an Intel integrated graphics card. Tom, regarding the patch, you mentioned that applying it be slower and performance could take a hit. [Bug 217908] Re: Images in Firefox and Opera are extremely pixeled when zoomed
Why is the importance of this bug set to 'wishlist'? Isnt this something that is not working the way it is intended to, rather than a feature request?Having the page zoom functionality would be a wishlist, but asking for a broken page zoom functionality to be fixed would be a proper bug (Low priority, maybe). Is a wishlist simply because, strictly speaking, the bug affects a feature that one can live without? I (and many others using high ppi displays) would like to disagree bcos it can sometimes be really hard to read webpages (designed for standard 96ppi displays) without zooming. And with more people having high ppi displays nowadays, it is not a wishlist anymore, but an accessibility issue. But one rather curious point that I would like to bring to the attention of whoever is working on the bug is my comment above: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/217908/comments/26 It gives me an impression that the bug fix might be easier to fix that I imagine it to be. [Bug 217908] Re: Images in Firefox and Opera are extremely pixeled when zoomed
@Bryce, thank you so much for your time. I trying for so long to get some response on this. I a relative noob and am not into coding, so I can't compare actual codes and the like. My comments are based on what I have read on forums and mailing lists. Based on that and my personal experience, here are the answers to your queries: * On the comment here https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=422179#c9 says Mozilla doesn't scale the images at all -- we hand off the image and a transform to RENDER, which needs to do the scaling. The issue is that the version of pixman that's currently shipped with all X servers doesn't implement EXTEND_PAD, which we need to get correct behaviour at image edges. * And here http://blog.vlad1.com/2008/03/18/a-little-more-cairo-just-for-you/ which says Linux users will have to wait a little longer to get higher quality image scaling; as we now rely on the X server to do image compositing through the Render extension, we'll have to wait until the pixman patches are integrated into the X server. I'm hoping that will happen in time for the next X.org release. * And the release of the library pixman( http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg-announce/2008-March/000529.html ) makes reference to modifications in the EXTEND_PAD. * Related comparison of graphics renderings on winXP and ubuntu hardy are here: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2162/2481984708_dedc30e9df_o.png * This poll on Ubuntu forums indicates that 45 of 56 voters had this issue on intrepid as of today http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=867161 These are the pieces that I used to guess that the bug might be fixed upstream. Thats the best I could do. I'm aware that latest Intrepid and Fedora10 beta use the latest xorg packages but dont seem to have this bug fixed. Based on the above info, I also assumed that it had nothing to do with the graphics card.
