[Bug 595344] Re: jockey failed to install Broadcom B43 wireless driver

2010-10-02 Thread Stenten
FYI, firmware-b43-installer is not included in the Maverick LiveCD, so
you can no longer install the Broadcom wireless drivers using the
LiveCD. I've opened a new bug report for this as Bug 653790.

[Bug 653790] [NEW] firmware-b43-installer is not included in the Maverick LiveCD

2010-10-02 Thread Stenten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

In Maverick, both firmware-b43-installer and b43-fwcutter are needed in
order to use the Broadcom wireless cards. Since the Maverick LiveCD only
contains b43-fwcutter, it's not possible to get wireless working on
these cards after installing Maverick unless you establish a wired
internet connection first and download firmware-b43-installer.

2010-10-02 Thread Stenten
znejk,

Please read Comment #29, specifically the part that says "If anyone else
is still experiencing issues even after the latest updates, please open
a new bug. Thanks!"

(You can file a bug against the kernel by typing "ubuntu-bug linux" into
a terminal.)

[Bug 648631] Re: Intel graphics drivers not working on new kernels on Maverick?

2010-09-29 Thread Stenten
Ah, I see what you meant now, sorry.

The 2.6.35-16 kernel rebased to the 2.6.35.2 mainline kernel, so the
same logic applies, you just have to test the mainline 2.6.35.1 and
2.6.35.2 kernels instead of 2.6.35 vs. 2.6.35.1 for the presence of the
bug (and of course still do everything else in my first post).

[Bug 648631] Re: Intel graphics drivers not working on new kernels on Maverick?

2010-09-28 Thread Stenten
Please purge the xorg-edgers PPA so you can get a cleaner debugging
environment (default Maverick packages).

Please upgrade your system, since there's a chance that this bug might
have already been fixed in a more recent kernel. At the text console,
login, and then run "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade".

Once you boot into the current Maverick kernel (2.6.35-22.33 at the time
of writing this), please attach debugging information to this report by
typing "apport-collect -p linux 648631" into a terminal.

If your problem is still present in the current Maverick kernel:

The -15 kernel (which is the kernel that introduced this bug) rebased to
the mainline 2.6.35.1 kernel. This indicates that there might be a
problem introduced between the 2.6.35 and 2.6.35.1 mainline kernels.
Please install both of these mainline kernels from the Mainline Kernel
PPA [1], along with the most current mainline kernel
(v2.6.36-rc5-maverick/ at the time of writing this) (installation
instructions can be found here [2]). Then please test whether the bug is
still present in all three of these mainline kernels (including dmesg
from all three kernels would also be helpful when you report if they
work or not).

Thank you for taking the time to debug and hopefully make Ubuntu better.

All this did was make my 'close' button disappear; it did not fix the
problem. I had to switch to a different theme and then back to my custom one
to get the close button back.

[Bug 511001] Re: [i855] Lucid Freeze shortly after X startup (needs KMS blacklist?)

2010-09-25 Thread Stenten
axion:

Huh?? KMS hasn't been enabled at the kernel-level and blacklisted in
xorg-server in Lucid (actually, I think this is impossible). The patch
in this bug report doesn't even do anything to KMS; it just forces
writes in the GTT.

I have a sneaking suspicion you're actually talking about the switch to
the fbdev driver instead of the Intel driver in Maverick. If this is
true, you should post your question to the ubuntu-x mailing list
instead.

[Bug 614176] Re: [855gm] 2.6.35-14: Invisible Cursor

2010-09-16 Thread Stenten
Hi Leann,

After upgrading my system, I've discovered that the cursor is back. I'm
pretty sure it's the fbdev driver that restored the cursor, because the
xorg-server containing that switch was one of the updates, and now my
-20 kernel has a working cursor (it didn't before the upgrades).

If it's any consolation, I tested the patched -22 kernel and it didn't
regress anything compared to the default -22 kernel.

[Bug 614176] Re: [855gm] 2.6.35-14: Invisible Cursor

2010-09-12 Thread Stenten
** Description changed:

  === Problem ===
- After upgrading to Maverick's -14 kernel, the cursor is invisible. Otherwise
it still functions perfectly (hover effects even work on buttons and links), I
just can't see it. I have to enable "Show position of pointer when the Control
Key is pressed" in System->Preferences->Mouse to use it.
+ A bad commit was introduced between the 2.6.35-rc6 and 2.6.35 kernels which
causes the cursor to be invisible on i855 machines. Apart from being invisible,
the cursor functions normally. This bug affects the Maverick 2.6.35-14 kernel
and onward.

[Bug 614176] Re: [855gm] 2.6.35-14: Invisible Cursor

2010-09-11 Thread Stenten
To those who are commenting, PLEASE read the description before
commenting. This bug is already confirmed, so any further confirmation
posts are superfluous and only congest the bug report, making it harder
to find useful posts which contain new information. It is also already
known that the last working kernel is the rc6 kernel, and that
suspend/resume fixes the problem.

If you have additional information to provide that is not in the
description, please post it. But if not, please click "This bug affects
me too" at the top, follow this report and the upstream report, and
patiently wait for a fix or something to test. Thank you.

Marking the Puppy Linux branch as invalid since it is a different bug.
This is a bug in UMS (hence i915.modeset=1 workaround), whereas the
Puppy Linux bug seems to be a bug in KMS (hence the i915.modeset=0
workaround).

[Bug 613349] Re: CTR + ALT + F1 (actually all of the terminals) not working

2010-08-09 Thread Stenten
What packages did you update to break this? It looks like you recently
upgraded to the -24 kernel; does booting into the -23 kernel in GRUB fix
the problem?

Did you try switching VTs in the same session you filed this bug?
There's no indication in the logs that a VT switch was requested. If you
didn't try switching, please try again and then upload the output of
dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Please also run 'sudo intel_reg_dumper > intel_reg_dumper1.txt' on a
fresh boot. Then try switching VTs and run 'sudo intel_reg_dumper >
intel_reg_dumper2.txt'. Then upload both files to this report. If you
can find a working configuration (like using a different kernel), it'd
be helpful if you could do the same procedure as above on that
configuration too.

[Bug 613633] Re: Shutdown and restart does not work

2010-08-09 Thread Stenten
Please add debugging information to this report by typing "apport-
collect 613633" into a terminal.

When you "press the main power button", do you mean holding it down so
it kills power, or pressing it once so it shows the dialogue box? Can
you shutdown with "sudo shutdown now" or reboot with "sudo reboot"?

[Bug 614176] Re: 2.6.35-14: Invisible Cursor

2010-08-05 Thread Stenten
In a strange turn of events, I've discovered I can get the cursor back
by suspending/resuming. However, I can't get it back by locking the
screen or switching VTs, so it's definitely the actual suspend/resume
cycle.

[Bug 614203] [NEW] apt-get spams ignoring *.list.save files unnecessarily

2010-08-05 Thread Stenten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

When adding a PPA through add-apt-repository, it generates two files in
/etc/apt/sources.list.d. One is a .list containing the 'deb http://...'
info, and another .list.save, which is a backup of the former.

While reading the package list, apt-get spams the terminal with lines such as:
N: Ignoring file 'google-chrome.list.save' in directory
'/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension
N: Ignoring file 'dockbar-main-ppa-maverick.list.save' in directory
'/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension
N: Ignoring file 'google-chrome.list.save' in directory
'/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension
N: Ignoring file 'dockbar-main-ppa-maverick.list.save' in directory
'/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension

These messages are completely unnecessary and should be gagged, just
like in Lucid.

[Bug 614176] [NEW] 2.6.35-14: Invisible Cursor

2010-08-05 Thread Stenten
Public bug reported:

=== Problem ===
After upgrading to Maverick's -14 kernel, the cursor is invisible. Otherwise it
still functions perfectly (hover effects even work on buttons and links), I
just can't see it. I have to enable "Show position of pointer when the Control
Key is pressed" in System->Preferences->Mouse to use it.

=== Debugging ===
Tested with the mainline kernels:
2.6.35 failed.
2.6.35-rc6 passed.

I'd love to git-bisect the commits for the 2.6.35 kernel, but there's no
documentation on how to do it and I've wasted all of the last two days
trying to figure out how to do it.

[Bug 614167] [NEW] After installing, Maverick doesn't prompt to remove the LiveUSB before rebooting.

2010-08-05 Thread Stenten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

After installing Maverick pre-A3 on my computer, I'm prompted to reboot,
but not to remove my LiveUSB. This makes the system reboot into the
LiveUSB again instead of the HDD install, which can be very confusing
and frustrating for new or less-tech-savvy users who don't know they
need to remove the media.

[Bug 613629] [NEW] Migration Assistant doesn't migrate anything on Maverick pre-A3

2010-08-04 Thread Stenten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Installed Maverick 20100803.1 daily (pre-A3) alongside Lucid, and used
Migration Assistant to migrate Lucid's data, which was only "Mozilla".
However, after booting into Maverick, Firefox has none of my
bookmarks/history/saved information. It's just the default Firefox
install.

[Bug 613100] Re: squashfs errors when booting live CD

2010-08-04 Thread Stenten
I got these errors too the first time I booted my LiveUSB. I think a
reboot was enough to fix it, either that or I had to re-copy the iso to
the usb stick. I would try both of those and see if you can reproduce
the errors reliably.

[Bug 613276] [NEW] usb-creator doesn't copy files to usb drive unless it's opened with root privileges

2010-08-03 Thread Stenten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

Steps to Reproduce:
1) Open usb-creator-gtk.
2) Select ISO (10.10 daily-live).
3) Erase disk.
4) Click "Open" to mount it. At this point the "Make Startup Disk" is no longer
shaded out, so I click it.

The "Installing the bootloader..." window appears. Then after a while this
window closes and is replaced by one containing:
An uncaught exception was raised:
[Errno 13] Permission Denied: '/media/disk_/casper'
It looks like this is right before the window saying "Copying files" is
supposed to come up, based on the timeframe.

If I open usb-creator-gtk with root privileges, the steps are exactly
the same, except that instead of seeing the error window, the "Copying
files" window appears and everything finishes normally and the ISO boots
correctly.

I suspect not. That bug was fixed in 0.100.0-4.1.2, and the reporter is
running 0.100.0-5 (at least at the time they reported).

[Bug 590354] Re: process crashes on boot

2010-07-27 Thread Stenten
>From another post by Scott James Remnant (the main ureadahead developer):
"This isn't actually a bug

Status 4 (usually ureadahead-other exits with this) means that you had a
mountpoint in your fstab that didn't have any files on it needed during
boot. Probably that drive with all those MP3s and movie files on it.

It still reads everything needed during boot, the status is just there
for me to debug other issues.

The real bug here is that Upstart spams the console with that message,
even though the ureadahead-other.conf file has "normal exit 4" in it!"

Therefore marking this invalid.

[Bug 609044] Re: conflicting fb hw usage inteldrmfb vs VESA VGA

2010-07-24 Thread Stenten
Ah, I see the problem now. ureadahead is causing the system to run out
of memory before the kernel sets up the swap space. So without the
spillover into swap, it's forced to kill processes, one of which is
plymouth, and this explains why you're not seeing it. Just search the
kern.log you uploaded for "swap" and you'll see what I mean.

[4.011349] 0 pages in swap cache
[4.011350] Swap cache stats: add 0, delete 0, find 0/0
[4.011352] Free swap = 0kB
[4.011353] Total swap = 0kB
[4.016847] 751615 pages RAM
[4.016850] 524290 pages HighMem
[4.016851] 12490 pages reserved
[4.016852] 443 pages shared
[4.016853] 215331 pages non-shared
[4.584624] Adding 2096444k swap on /dev/sda5. Priority:-1 extents:1
across:2096444k

All that is *after* the ureadahead/memory errors I posted above.

I agree that you might as well open a new bug against ureadahead with
'ubuntu-bug ureadahead' at this point. It'll contain all the Apport
information they'll expect (instead of this xserver-xorg-video-intel
info) and they won't have to wade through 10+ comments trying to figure
out the problem.

So if you wouldn't mind running 'ubuntu-bug ureadahead' immediately
after booting into Maverick, and once you've finished reporting, post
the ureadahead bug's url here and mark this report invalid. Thanks!

[Bug 609044] Re: conflicting fb hw usage inteldrmfb vs VESA VGA

2010-07-24 Thread Stenten
Shane,
Are all the boots in kern.log from the default Maverick boot? They seem to be
using the Maverick kernel, but I also noticed you suspended in a couple of
them, which would be hard to do if you can't boot :)

It seems ureadahead is taking all of your memory, and then both it and plymouth
are being killed to free some of that memory. From kern.log, most recent entry
(on the bottom):
[3.994657] ureadahead invoked oom-killer: gfp_mask=0xd0, order=0, oom_adj=0
[3.994664] ureadahead cpuset=/ mems_allowed=0

It also looks like you don't have any swap space. Is this true? Did you
not set up a swap partition when you installed Maverick? If there's no
swap space, then that's why you're running out of memory, and you should
create a swap partition.

A new version of ureadahead was also uploaded recently, ureadahead
0.100.0-6, which fixes bug 501715. This bug caused ureadahead to use
much more memory than it should. I would make sure you are running this
updated version with 'dpkg -s ureadahead', and if not please 'sudo apt-
get update && sudo apt-get upgrade".

[Bug 609044] Re: conflicting fb hw usage inteldrmfb vs VESA VGA

2010-07-23 Thread Stenten
Chris,
Are you sure this isn't an X bug? There's a segfault in the Xorg.0.log.old
(which is the default boot where the error occured). Wouldn't this be the
problem? Or is the segfault rather a symptom of the Plymouth bug?

+ === Original Report ===
  Laptop: Sony Vaio model: VPCY2190X
Ubuntu Release: 10.04 x64 Live USB as made by the USB Creator tool from
Ubuntu 10.04 x64

I am trying to boot Ubuntu off a live USB stick (no disc drive), but get a
kernel panic or a non-responsive system on every boot.
If I allow the startup process to continue without interference to change
options, I eventually end up with a blank screen, no response to mouse or
keyboard except for ctrl-alt-del, which preforms a shutdown. ctrl-alt-f1 will
not bring up a terminal either. When I turn on the 'nomodeset' boot option I
can see the boot splash, can ESC out of it and see boot text. However, I get
what appears to be corrupted, colored text for a split second and then kernel
panic (caps & scroll lock blinking) with black screen. The other options in
the live boot option screen do not seem to make an appreciable difference.

With my moderate amount of linux experience, I'm going to postulate that
this is a graphics chipset driver issue because of the display
corruption and the fact that 'nomodeset' at least improves the boot
experience. The graphics chipset is an Intel chip:

Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
  Mobile Intel® GS45 Express Chipset

I hope that I am in error in reporting this bug, but I have tried all the
tricks that I could think of to get it to boot and have failed.

Sorry, I meant for that to be without the xorg.conf, which forces the
vesa driver. That wasn't as clear as it should have been, sorry.

[Bug 605667] Re: [arrandale] Maverick boots to a black screen: "(EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected."

2010-07-19 Thread Stenten
Good, I see it's working a little better with the latest updates from
xorg-edgers. It's now giving problems with the DRM driver in the kernel:
[25.710] drmGetBusid returned ''
[25.710] (EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version.
[25.710] (EE) intel(0): Failed to become DRM master.
so it'd be helpful to get the dmesg output for the error and see what the
kernel says.

I'm willing to bet that if you can shutdown normally using the power button,
you can also switch to another VT with Ctrl+Alt+F1. This makes gathering logs
much easier, as I'm sure you know. So now I'd like you to recreate the scenario
above, but this time add 'drm.debug=0x06' as the only kernel parameter. This
will add debugging information to dmesg. Then switch to another VT after
recreating and get a copy of /var/log/dmesg, the output of 'dmesg', and another
copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log for consistency.
cat /var/log/dmesg > BootDmesg.txt
dmesg > CurrentDmesg.txt
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log > Xorg.0.log.txt
(or however else you want to capture those three files.)

If you can't switch to another VT, you'll need to SSH in from another
computer to get the two dmesg logs (alternately you could cherrypick
that particular boot from kern.log, copy it to another file (so the file
is smaller and only contains the relevant boot) and upload that along
with Xorg.0.log.old).

[Bug 605667] Re: Kernel Panic on Live USB Boot, Intel Graphics not working

2010-07-19 Thread Stenten
Please update your Maverick install first:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Then remove/backup your xorg.conf file:
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
(you can revert with 'sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak /etc/X11/xorg.conf' if you
need to)
And then reboot without any boot options (quiet, splash, xforcevesa, or
nomodeset). This should recreate the bug with the default settings (quiet and
splash just add noise, so even though they're default, removing them gives a
cleaner debugging scenario). After this freezes, reboot using 'xforcevesa
nomodeset' so you can get a usable desktop, and upload /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
to this bug report. This should give us the Xorg.0.log for the broken default
boot, which is basically the complete Xorg.0.log you took snippets from in
comment #1.

Thank you for taking the time to help bugfix Maverick while it's still
in its development phase. If you have any questions about these
instructions, please let me know and I'll try and explain them better.

As a sidenote, booting with 'nomodeset' gave you a kernel panic because
the -intel driver in Maverick doesn't support User Mode Settings anymore
(only KMS), so when you tried to boot without KMS, the kernel got very
confused and gave you a kernel panic.

[Bug 583902] Re: [i915gm] X crashes minutes after resuming from suspend to RAM

That's a problem with with xorg-edgers PPA, most likely because it was in the
process of updating or one of the daily git snapshots has a bug in it. From the
xorg-edgers page:
"To revert to official packages, you can install the ppa-purge package and run
"sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers". If you have driconf it is recommended to remove

Because different graphics bugs usually present with the same symptoms,
we ask that everyone files separate bugs for each system. Please file a
new bug with 'ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel' during the same boot
as the crash (using SSH or TTY), or if you have to reboot also attach
/var/log/kern.log. Thank you.

- open the lid and wait for it to power up. the machine is running but now
backlight. I can "see" that something is on the screen.
+ === Workaround ===
After digging through the forums I found a workaround: just change the
brightness with Fn+F3 or Fn+F4.
+
+ === Upstream Testing ===
+ Fixed on 2.6.35 6/15/10 daily/current Mainline build.
+
+ === Debugging ===
+ Suspending from console using pm-suspend works normally (backlight comes back
on after resume).
+
+ === Additional Information ===
The strange thing is that this didn't happen with 9.10 or 10.4 (updated from
9.10). I had to reinstall the machine (broken HDD) and this started to happen.
I saw similar reports but not quite the same.

  === Debugging ===
Suspending from console using pm-suspend works normally (backlight comes back
on after resume).
+ If the lid-close setting is changed to "Black screen", the lid can be closed
and re-opened and the backlight comes back on at as expected.
