** Description changed:

I version-upgraded Ubuntu 15.04 in place to Ubuntu 15.10 on an HP
workstation with a Intel Core i7 and 16GB RAM. The HDD was previously in a
different computer, and I have seen issues with the settings from the old
machine fighting with the settings for current OS version. The behaviour is as
follows:
When I log in with the 4.2.x kernel, the machine changes to a blank screen
pauses for a moment and returns me to the login splash screen.
I can log in normally if I use the 3.19.0-32-generic kernel.
I can also change to TTY1 and log in at the command line with the 4.2.x
kernel.

Mike, I have a fresh install to 2.0.7. The system worked for a while
but it has developed this hang in catalog search. I agree it is
probably not an ubuntu bug, but en evergreen bug.

[Bug 213081] Re: CUPS does not print to LPD printer

2010-05-02 Thread Wolf Halton
Getting the same symptoms on a Lucid distribution-upgrade. Worked in Karmic,
fails in Lucid. Dell tower, HP LJ4000 network printer. Printing on my HP
laptop just prints multiples, but I have fixed that issue before.
I am trying the fix mentioned above for cupsd.conf
net.ipv4.tcp_frto = 0
The fix works - the line was not in cupsd.conf

[Bug 532542] Re: [lucid] flashplugin-installer doesn't work with Firefox 3.6

2010-05-02 Thread Wolf Halton
I have this issue on an upgrade. This system has been running since
2007 with upgrades working fine. It has probably got a lot of tweaks
which I cannot remember at this point, and I am not really wanting to
run a clean install on this machine. Maybe the answer is to run a dual-
boot to migrate the users over. I would rather have a better work-
around, or a real patch.

[Bug 335720] Re: package python-pmw 1.3.2-3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-08-27 Thread Wolf Halton
My install attempt appears to be calling for python2.5 I have versions
2.4, 2.5, 2.6 installed but 3.1 is the default python on my box. The
whole MGLTools group is still looking for python2.5. I guess you could
back up to python2.5 and get python-pmw to install.

[Bug 373779] [NEW] expand slide crashes openoffice presentation

2009-05-08 Thread Wolf Halton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-base

Using the expand slide macro in the Insert Menu causes a complete shutdown of
OO.o. I expected it to make a new set of slides that used the main header of
the content block as their main header and the 1st subheaders as the main
headers of their own slides. This is how it has happened in previous times
when I used the feature (in other OS and with earlier versions of OO.o.
All files open are reverted to their last saved version, whether or not it
appears that OO.o is going to save the current condition. I am using Jaunty
and OO.o 3.0.1 (build 9379). I don't know how to get a good valgrind report on
this.

[Bug 329291] [NEW] recent upgrade to 8.10, cannot log in, mouse and keyboard don't respond

2009-02-13 Thread Wolf Halton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Seems similar to the Dell Laptop-related bug Bug #285323:, but this is a
whitebox and not a Dell. I had to leave during the update-manager-controlled
version upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10.
As in Bug #285323, the keyboard works fine in run level 3 [ctrl]+[alt]+[f1]
An aptitude dist-upgrade removed a few packages that appeared to be connected
with the previous upgrade, but the problem persisted.
I started up in recovery mode and fix xorg had no apparent effect in the
problem.
I don't know how to fix a rogue gnome-power-manager or roll back to 8.04. If
those are the only fixes, I may need additional help.

Re: [Bug 67895] Re: Crash during logout

2007-04-05 Thread Wolf Halton
You are brilliant!
I found it right away. The issue was a comment added to a line in /etc/profile.
The //This had been read as a variable instead of being ignored, as it had
been for months before that. The code had been installed to force root log-out
after 10 minutes, and as that was done as an illustration in the book I was
working on, the whole section could be # commented out.
Brilliant, I tell you! Brilliant.

Thanks.

I also enjoy this feature of firefox 2.0.0.1.. This also happens when

Ditto, annoying and definitely results in loss of information about the

Re: [Bug 64253] Re: dpkg: error processing python-gobject (--configure)

2006-10-10 Thread Wolf Halton
DPKG returns python-gnome2

So many things were going screwy in the GUI that I decided to roll back
from the edgy install, reinstall dapper and get my production machine
up, so I just fdisked the whole thing and started again. The bug is
gone, but not exactly resolved.

I am going to see if I can get the same bug on the testing machine
(which never has any problems like this) and then I can be more useful.
This happened after an online aptitude dist-upgrade on a machine that I
had been using in productionfor over a year. My gut says it was all
because of how much gets put on the machine. I write books on network
security and my production machine was full of scripts for hacking
linux. I had at least half of Fydor's top 100 hacking tools installed.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2006-09-22 Thread Wolf Halton
Cubic stones fix does not work in Conyers GA
metaphor has dependencies unmet.

UNIX is 20 years older than dos. UNIX is cubic stones here. Brick
roads here have lasted for over 100 years. Asphalt fixes have to be
replaced every year (like windows) Fixing old brick roads holes with new
bricks takes longer than pouring some asphalt, but fix lasts 100 years,
too.

[Bug 59924] XFce heap not purging

2006-09-11 Thread Wolf Halton
Public bug reported:

If a user keeps their session running (and just locks the screensaver)
over 3 or more days, the XFce desktop and XFce-ce4-menu take up all the
available vram and most of the available ram. I have the XFce-menu on
my taskbar.

At the point where XFce-ce4-menu is holding almost all of my vram and
50% of my ram hostage. The memory map says that 794M of vram is in the
heap. XFcedesktop has 391M of vram.

I know the work-around is to end the session every day or more
frequently, but I tend to work on multi-day projects such as text-books,
and it takes too long to recreate all of my work and research every day.
I refer back to the results of processes running in terminal windows,
and surfing histories that follow a specific path. I guess I don't need
to bore you with my logistics.

This is not just a moaning session. When it gets like this I cannot open
any applications and have to force the system down, or unplug it
