I tried 3.2.0-20.33 and it was just as bad as 3.2.0-20.32 - couldn't run for more than an hour or so before I got a lockup. [Bug 961378] [NEW] Can't Reopen Contacts Window when Unity Active
Public bug reported: Under the current 12.04 beta, if you close the contact window in Pidgin (but have a chat window open), you cannot re-open the contact window. With other launchers (like Docky for instance) clicking the launcher icon would reopen the contacts window. Not so with Unity. Also since there is no indicator icon anymore, there is no way to get to the contacts list whatsoever without quitting Pidgin alltogether and relaunching it. None of the Pidgin menus that are visible in Unity when selecting an active chat window have an option to display the contact list either. I think this might have come to be as a result of fixes for #881642 or at least they may be related (though different bugs) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: pidgin 1:2.10.1-1ubuntu2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-18.29-generic 3.2.9 Uname: Linux 3.2.0-18-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 1.94.1-0ubuntu2 Architecture: amd64 Date: Wed Mar 21 09:50:54 2012 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" - Release amd64 (20111012) SourcePackage: pidgin UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to precise on 2012-02-22 (27 days ago) ** Affects: pidgin (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug precise -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/961378 Title: Can't Reopen Contacts Window when Unity Active To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pidgin/+bug/961378/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 956091] [NEW] Jockey does not remove 'nouveau' driver blacklist when deactivating nvidia driver
Public bug reported: I decided to try out the nVidia binary driver again as I had found an application that required it. After I was done, I used Jockey to switch back to the 'nouveau' open source driver instead. After rebooting, my machine came up using only the VESA driver, with the usual VESA limitations (reduced resolution, no choice of external monitors, etc). I did some troubleshooting and discovered that the 'nouveau' kernel driver was not being loaded. I did some further digging and discovered that a file had been left behind from the nvidia driver: /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-current_hybrid.conf This file explicitly disables the 'nouveau' driver, leaving the machine without graphics. None of the GUI utilities can identify this to the user. Jockey should be ensuring that 'nouveau' is not blacklisted any more when the user tries to switch back to the open source driver! [Bug 522998] Re: XHCI (USB 3.0) kernel Module Prevents Suspend
Agreed, this is probably not fixable in terms of total functionality under Lucid (and possibly not even under Maverick), however there needs to be some sort of workaround in place especially as this is an LTS release. Within 6 months USB 3.0 ports will start to become standard across the board. In my humble opinion, blacklisting XHCI is a totally workable solution given that the ports will continue to operate as USB 2.0 ports. There are precious few USB 3.0 devices available yet, and those devices will work fine as USB 2.0 devices if that's all the system is supporting. The most important questions in my mind would be: - Will the system suspend/resume? - Do the USB ports work when devices are plugged in to them? Those two issues are far more important than "Do the ports work at full USB 3.0 speeds even though there are no current devices that can make use of that capacity?" -- XHCI (USB 3.0) kernel Module Prevents Suspend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/522998 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi everyone, Please mark this bug as affecting you rather than commenting about the workaround - we know that manually unloading the module or adding SUSPEND_MODULES="xhci" fixes the problem, but this is not the correct solution. The XHCI driver either needs to have suspend implemented, or Ubuntu's suspend scripts need to handle this for us automatically in some manner. There are potential problems to having this module unloaded in this manner - for instance if you are using a USB 3.0 hard disk you wouldn't want to unload the module manually while you had a filesystem mounted with open files! -- XHCI (USB 3.0) kernel Module Prevents Suspend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/522998 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This also affects the Lenovo W510 (multiple models) and probably affects the T410s as well. The upstream bug report is stalled because I can't sort out how to compile a kernel the "ubuntu way" under Lucid - the latest public documentation I can find is still targeting Karmic, and a lot of the scripts, etc have changed. They're looking for a kernel to be compiled with the ACPI_PROCESSOR code compiled as a module so it can be unloaded, or disabled altogether. -- [Lenovo 2537AD3, 2537AB8] one successful suspend/resume per boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532374 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

As far as I can tell on the W510 the only way to get at the CMOS battery is to nearly completely disassemble the machine. [Bug 522974] [NEW] GDM Hangs after Plymouth startup
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: plymouth When Plymouth is installed on my system, once booting reaches the GDM screen GDM hangs. Alt-Shift-SysRq-K restarts GDM and login then continues normally. This did not occur directly after install from the alternate cd image dated 2010-02-15, but next boot after installing all updates ended up here. Also at boot once the GDM screen is loaded on my system it is totally garbled - a console switch and then returning to the GDM console fixes the issues. [Bug 388593] Re: Wifi auto-connection asks for keyring password
OS X does this by having multiple keychains - a "system" keychain that holds "common" items like WiFi passwords, and a "private" keychain that holds everything else. One thing to be aware of with all of this however is support for corporate-style WPA connections where a username/password pair (and possibly even a certificate) are used rather than just a consumer-style password. In the corporate scenario the current behavior is "correct" - the username/password pair should only be unlocked by the user who's credentials are being used - we don't want Bob to be using Mary's credentials on the corporate wireless network! Ignoring auto-login for the moment, another way to look at this is "WHY are users seeing that message?", the answer in many cases being the system password has been changed to be different from the Keychain password. Again there's two ways to handle this: 1. When the user changes their system password, ask if their keychain password should be changed as well. Probably difficult to implement for command line utils though like 'passwd' unless it can be plugged in to PAM somehow. 2. When the password prompt is being displayed immediately after login, display a message with some text like "You were prompted for this password as your Keychain password is currently different from your Login password. [Bug 377697] Re: update manager should warn about laptop running on battery when installing big updates
Further to this it may be wise to look at how Update-Manager interacts with power management. When Update Manager is active, it prevents the system from entering 'Suspend'. I can understand this - say the updates being applied could potentially prevent suspend from working. However it actually makes this paper cut much more severe since you can wind up in a state where you started an upgrade, ran out of power and then couldn't even suspend and resume later to complete it! -- update manager should warn about laptop running on battery when installing big updates https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/377697 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 89189] Re: Some windows do not render with "Desktop Effects" enabled on some hardware
I can confirm Thom's experience with Java applications... On both i810 and nVidia I've got a Java application that behaves VERY badly - many windows do not draw properly (plain grey window with no contents) and resizing windows doesn't work properly either. A few windows do draw but resizing them just results in grey space filling the additional space added to the window. -- Some windows do not render with "Desktop Effects" enabled on some hardware https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/89189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 89189] Re: Some windows do not render with "Desktop Effects" enabled on some hardware
This issue suddenly happened again out of nowhere on my i810 system - I now have XAANoOffscreenPixmaps enabled again in my config. Not sure if this is related but I'm also having window drawing issues with some Java-based apps on an nVidia system - some application windows just show up plain grey while others draw properly but don't resize - the window frame resizes and the empty space is filled with grey, the application believes the window has resized but it never gets drawn. -- Some windows do not render with "Desktop Effects" enabled on some hardware https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/89189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 90299] Re: when desktop-effects enabled, apps requiring sudo permissions not showingup correctly
After some searching I found a post specifically talking about compiz on the i915... Add this option to your Xorg.conf in the Device section for your Intel video card: Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" Seems to have fixed issues for me - terminal windows now draw properly, password fields now display stars as expected, gksu works properly, etc. I'll give it a bit more time before I call this the definite fix as some of the above problems didn't happen with me initially under Herd 5. -- when desktop-effects enabled, apps requiring sudo permissions not showingup correctly https://launchpad.net/bugs/90299 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 90299] Re: when desktop-effects enabled, apps requiring sudo permissions not showingup correctly
I can confirm the same behavior on an HP/Compaq nc6220, again using Intel i915 video. The password field issues are an inconvenience at most but the SERIOUS problem is the terminal window suffers from the same problem - terminal windows open before turning on desktop effects are ok but any subsequent terminal windows are blank. -- when desktop-effects enabled, apps requiring sudo permissions not showingup correctly https://launchpad.net/bugs/90299 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 75398] Re: Regression: Fan does not come on due to ACPI problems
I have applied the attached patch on my HP/Compaq nc6220 - this patch doesn't quite apply cleanly to the current source as it looks like parts of it have made their way in already. After the patch I have a working hard drive after suspend BUT no built- in sound. This is a regression back to the current behavior in Dapper/Edgy on this hardware. 2.6.20-11 with the patch included in bug #74877 gives me both working suspend AND working sound. -- Regression: Fan does not come on due to ACPI problems https://launchpad.net/bugs/75398 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I've got the same issues on an HP/Compaq nc6220 so this issue is looking like it affects a lot of HP laptop models. 2.6.20-9 with the above patch (which installed perfectly btw, thanks!!) and with CONFIG_ATA_PIIX disabled has resulted in perfectly functioning suspend. Also much like one of the above posters I now have working sound after suspend, neither Dapper nor Edgy could boast that! -- regression: suspend does not work on hp nw8240 with feisty https://launchpad.net/bugs/74877 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
