[Bug 1233608] Re: package cups 1.5.3-0ubuntu8 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2014-03-18 Thread Dead Leaf
Hello,
This error was caused, in my case, on a computer I use as a server. I was
remotely logged I launched the install for wine:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
$ sudo apt-get install wine1.6#latest stable release

I put the end of the installation on the background:
ctrl+z
$ bg

Once the download was finished and the installation started, my local
computer shut down (power failure in my office). Ssh connection broke.
Since then I haven't been able to fix it. I rebooted and the
errorreporting procedude was launched.

I tried 'apt-get -f install' and it didn't work. Ofter rebooting my 'server' I
tried again 'apt-get -f install' it worked.
Then I updated + dist-upgrade and it went all smoothly
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Hope that helps you find the problem
Sincerely,
Dead Leaf

to fix this problem you just have to comment/delete the line 864 of

[Bug 704231] Re: Unity steals super modifier key

2011-06-17 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Agree 1000x with Cefn.

The Keyboard Shortcuts applet is now broken. It allows you to assign
super key behaviors which simply don't work, they all fail silently.
This is a major bug and a regression. A very frustrating one I might
add.

Yes, it's reproducible 100% of the time. It always stays the same when
switching tabs until the window loses focus (at which point it updates).
I've rebooted and logged in/out a number of times with no effect.

It does only happen when the window is not maximized. When the window is
maximized it seems to work properly.

[Bug 768271] [NEW] Key bindings involving Super key no longer work in Natty

2011-04-21 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I can set up keybindings with the super key, even if they're not used
elsewhere by unity, they don't work. For example I've had Super+Up and
Super+Down bound to volume up and down for ages (which is very
convenient), but it no longer works in Natty.

This is a bug because if you're allowed to assign a key combination,
that key combination should work, not just fail silently.

[Bug 768275] [NEW] Compiz effects slow and laggy on Natty with ATI card

2011-04-21 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Sorry if this is filed under the wrong package.

Under exactly the same hardware configuration, Maverick always ran very
swiftly and smoothly. Since switching to Natty, graphics are now very
slow and lagged. This is most noticeable when using compiz zoom, before
it was very smooth, now it's very choppy and difficult to use. It's also
noticeable on ALT-Tabbing, sometimes it takes 3 seconds for the dialog
to popup. Scrolling in applications is much more choppy than before.
Makes the system feel slow and lagged despite having a very low system
load and plenty of memory.

The same problems occur in Classic Desktop as well as Unity.

[Bug 768356] [NEW] Title bar text doesn't change with app

2011-04-21 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Sorry if this is filed under the wrong package.

The title bar text doesn't change when it should. This is most
noticeable in firefox when I switch tabs. For example I'll have google
open and the titlebar text says Google - Mozilla Firefox, which is
great, but if I switch the tab over to Yahoo it still shows Google -
Mozilla Firefox until I alt-tab to a different window or switch
desktops, at which point it redraws properly. This also happens in
Terminal and other applications that use tabs.

[Bug 768531] [NEW] Changing effect settings in ccsm ruins top panel

2011-04-21 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When changing many of the effects settings in ccsm, the windows all
blink for a second as the effects are applied, this has always
happened. The problem I'm having is when the top panel comes back, it's
blank except for some pixel garbage on the left hand side. Nothing I do,
even using the Switch Users feature will bring it back. I end up having
to reboot.

[Bug 277982] Re: Google PDF won't work right. Is this a bug?

2010-10-22 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
I'm attaching an example of a PDF with this problem, though it happens
on virtually all PDF books downloaded from Google Books. The black and
white images display but no color images will display, there's just a
white square where they should be. Try opening the attachment with
Acrobat reader and evince and comparing page by page, there's a big
difference.

In the console it produces this error message over and over:

Error (525061): Error in JPX stream
Error (525061): Error in JPX stream
Error (880521): Error in JPX stream
Error (895025): Error in JPX stream
Error (901617): Error in JPX stream
Error (908034): Error in JPX stream

Googling the message I found this link:

http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/poppler-
bugs/2009-October/003910.html

in which a commentor replied:

The problem is ubuntu is not using openjpeg when building poppler so the old
and deprecated decoder is used and it fails. You should open a bug against
ubuntu asking them to use openjpeg when building poppler.

Thanks

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2010-10-21 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Peter Hoeg: Mine behaves almost exactly like you're describing. I've
found if I create a 512MB swapfile and every time it starts getting a
bit laggy like it's about to freeze up, I tab over to a terminal window
and run:

sudo swapon /path/to/swapfile
sudo swapoff -a

Something about turning on the swapfile and turning it back off does
something that usually buys me about an hour before it starts locking up
again. I know it's not great, but it's better than rebooting several
times a day. I really wish someone would fix this problem, it's been
consistent for me and a daily struggle/annoyance on 3 releases now.
Until this problem is fixed, Ubuntu = Windows ME :(

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2010-10-06 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
psypher: Turning off swap definitely doesn't help for me as I've tried
it with or without swap. It's actually a little better with swap turned
on. It seems to get bad when I've been running for a while and free
memory gets 500MB or so. For some reason using the firefox all-in-one
gestures add on and using middle-click to scroll down the page really
aggravates the problem.

I really wish someone could find the cause of this. Sub-daily reboots
are reminding me of my Windows ME days.

[Bug 611494] Re: VLC emits static, depletes available memory on certain MP3s

2010-09-19 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Rusivi1, I downloaded and ran the Maverick live cd then installed VLC
and all the usual audio codecs from the repo. The end result is the mp3
file doesn't play at all. The counter goes and the scroll bar moves as
if it's playing, but there's no audio at all. The file plays fine in
Movie Player and Rhythymbox on the same livecd.

If there's any sort of info I can provide please let me know.

[Bug 611494] Re: VLC emits static, depletes available memory on certain MP3s

2010-08-17 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
I'm attaching an MP3 file that triggers the bug, though it's not
specific to this one file, I have hundreds that do it from different
sources. I can reproduce this problem every time by:

1. Loading the MP3 in VLC
2. Start playing it
3. If I let it play it will play for several minutes, then the loud screeching
static starts
4. It's exasperated if I move the slider to seek different parts of the file a
number of times, but this isn't necessary to reproduce
5. Once the static starts, if I hit PAUSE, I can watch the VLC process in top
going from 30MB of RES to 3.0+ GB within a few seconds. At this point the
system runs out of RAM and swap and crashes.

Gxine and Windows Media Player both play the file flawlessly.

Thanks

[Bug 611493] [NEW] Poor handling of Out of Memory condition

2010-07-29 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: upstart

Handling of out of memory conditions very poor in my opinion.
Experiencing a bug where occasionally VLC player will have a memory leak
and quickly go from using 30MB of resident memory to several GB causing
RAM and small swap to fill up until there's no remaining memory (this
same situation has happened with other applications as well such as
kdenlive, but that's irrelevant)

I'd expect the Linux Kernel to gracefully handle this situation by
simply terminating the out of control process as soon as the memory
limit is reached so I can resume work in other applications without any
loss. What actually happens is nothing like this. As soon as the memory
limit is reached, the screen and mouse cursor lock up so I can't
manually kill the bad process. The system becomes completely unusable
for about 5 to 10 minutes totally frozen. After this excruciatingly long
time period, the kernel will start terminating applications.
Unfortunately it never terminates the VLC process which is hogging
several GB of RAM, but rather starts terminating processes completely
unrelated to the problem, such as GTK window decorator, openoffice,
firefox, etc. There's a delay of several minutes between each of these
terminations where the system remain unusable.

Eventually after a total of 10-15 minutes of this it will eventually
kill the process which is using all the RAM, it finishes leaving the
system in an unusable state needing reboot (no window title bars, compiz
dead, all accessories closed), and all unsaved work is lost in
applications that were terminated.

The out of memory handling is very inadequate for a modern operating
system.

[Bug 611494] [NEW] VLC emits static, depletes available memory on certain MP3s

2010-07-29 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

When listening to certain long (around 75 minutes) MP3s of radio
broadcasts, randomly during the playback VLC will abruptly emit a
horrible static type sound instead of the audio and promptly chew up all
available memory (several gigs) until the system grinds to a halt.

Sometimes it will just do the memory leak without the static sound,
sometimes pausing and hitting play again causes the static sound to
start (which can be fixed by hitting pause then play again) without the
memory leak.

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2010-07-22 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
I feel your pain. This bug affects me just about every day. My computer
which is a fast system with plenty of RAM starts out lightning fast and
over the course of the day gets slower and slower until it's so unusable
I have to reboot. When it slows down 'top' doesn't really show anything
but a really high io wait (usually about 80%). I always have plenty of
free RAM. I thought it was a bad harddrive, so I bought a new one and
the problem is still there.

I found if I create a very small swap file (like 32 megabytes) just so
the system can see some swap space it will freeze slightly less often (I
can sometimes go two days on this configuration), but the problem is
still there.

I'm having to reboot daily like I'm running Windows ME or something :/

[Bug 438868] Re: Address bar autocomplete and search bar autocomplete doesn't always work after emerging from a screensaver or suspend

2010-04-25 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
@Jonathan CrockettI believe that's a completely different bug than
the one in this bug report. In this report you can type normally, it's
just the awesomebar matching results don't pop up at all unless you
first alt-tab to another window. With this bug there's no highlighting
and no text being deleted.

I believe the bug you have can be rectified by setting
browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll to false

[Bug 438868] Re: Address bar autocomplete doesn't always work

2009-12-15 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Hilkus: the bug I'm having isn't as you describe. I can type just fine,
it doesn't get overwritten. It simply that the autocomplete suggestions
don't pop up. Sometimes as I type I can see them appear for a split
second then disappear. I can't confirm this, but I think that gnome or
compiz or something else is causing them to be drawn *behind* the
Firefox window instead of in the foreground. Alt-TABing to another
window then back to firefox fixes which window it thinks is in the
foreground hence it works again.

[Bug 494316] [NEW] Awesome bar can't be used after Firefox regains focus from screensaver

2009-12-08 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

This can be repeated 100% of the time. Whenever I leave the computer
long enough for the monitor to shut off with Firefox 3.5.5 as the
foreground window, when I get back the Firefox awesome bar doesn't work
anymore. Typing into it brings it up for a tiny fraction of a second and
it disappears. Also, when this is happening it loses keystrokes, maybe
every 4th or 5th letter I type.

It can be resolved easily: if I give focus to another application window
in Gnome and then switch back to Firefox it works flawlessly again but
repeats the next time I step away. I've been getting this since 9.04 and
the upgrade to 9.10 didn't fix it. I tried a complete
removal/reinstallation which didn't help.

Not sure if this is a firefox problem, a compiz problem, an nvidia
problem, or a gnome problem.

Thanks

Eh, I can show you a screenshot if you want, but basically, the mouse

[Bug 448153] [NEW] Folder settings (metadata) lost after upgrade

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hey everyone,

After upgrading from 9.4 to 9.10, all my Nautilus folder settings have
all been restored to defaults, all of my emblem assignments are gone.
The old metadata files are still there in the ~/.nautilus/metadata
directory, but a new file titled migrated-to-gvfs is there. I tried
deleting this file and rebooting to see if that would make the migration
successful, but the file just reappears the next time I log in and the
folder settings still don't appear.

I'm assuming some sort of move away from the metadata has occurred, but
the migration has failed?

[Bug 239251] [NEW] Hilighting covers up text itself

2008-06-11 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

evince 2.22.2 on Ubuntu 8.04:

I have a document where when viewing or printing, yellow hilighting in
the document covers up text so it's only readable if you select it. It
displays fine on xpdf and Adobe. The document is attached, an example of
it is on page 42.

[Bug 153187] mouse cursor disappears after testing resolution with nv driver

2007-10-16 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Public bug reported:

When I run displayconfig-gtk, about a third of the time when switching
resolutions and clicking the Test button, the mouse cursor will not be
visible on the screen with the OK/Cancel that pops up to test. If I hit
cancel to go back to the old resolution, the mouse cursor will still be
gone. No matter what I do, logout, etc I can't get the cursor to come
back, I have to reboot.

This happens while using the nv driver.

Thanks,
EDG

[Bug 153187] Re: mouse cursor disappears after testing resolution with nv driver

2007-10-16 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
To clarify: the machine still responds to the mouse, it's not losing
mouse support completely, just the displaying of the cursor. If I can
find a button blindly, you can see it going into a mouseover state,
and it responds to clicking ,etc.

[Bug 153000] Default azureus package install broken in Gutsy

2007-10-15 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Public bug reported:

If you use Add/Remote to install Sun Java and Azureus, it will run but
is very unstable. It crashes constantly and won't transfer files.

The workaround I found was to download Sun Java from their site, extract
it and copy it to /usr/java/latest, then download Azureus from its
official site and install it manually. If I follow these directions it
works perfectly.

This is with Gutsy amd64

[Bug 152523] Gutsy crashes constantly with nVidia restricted mode driver

2007-10-13 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Public bug reported:

Fresh install on an AMD64 with an onboard nvidia 6100. As soon as the
restricted mode driver is installed, the machine works and looks great
except after about 5 minutes of use the screen fills with garbage and it
locks hard- num lock light no longer toggles. I don't believe it's
defective hardware as I've run a memtest and have used the same hardware
with Windows XP for a year with no issues.

It's very frustrating for this new ubuntu convert as the non-restricted
mode driver can't display a refresh rate that's compatible with my
monitor.

I'd appreciate any help you can give!
