[Bug 427325] Re: 3G USB modem - ZTE MF6273 not recognised

2009-11-30 Thread frogzoo
Please log this as a bug against modemmanager:

On latest Koala, 2.6.31-15-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 10 14:53:52
UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

can get this modem to work, as follows:

add the following rule to /lib/udev/rules.d/77-mm-zte-port-types.rules:
ATTRS{idProduct}==2000, ENV{.MM_USBIFNUM}==03,
ENV{ID_MM_ZTE_PORT_TYPE_MODEM}=1
ATTRS{idProduct}==2000, ENV{.MM_USBIFNUM}==01,
ENV{ID_MM_ZTE_PORT_TYPE_AUX}=1

then change the connection setting in network-manager: right click nm applet -
Edit Connections... - Mobile Broadband - This Connection - Edit - ipv4
Settings:
Change the default setting of automatic (ppp) Addresses Only to automatic
(ppp)

Still need to eject the modem on insertion, but from there everything
works automatically.

[Bug 180503] osdclock obscured by gnome-panel

2008-01-05 Thread frogzoo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: osdclock

Trying to launch osdclock at login (from sys - preferences -
sessions).

The clock appears on screen, but when gnome panel starts, gnome panel
obscures osdclock.

As a workaround, I can delay osdclock starting, launching this script
from sessions instead:

#!/bin/bash -x
(sleep 10 ; nohup /usr/bin/osd_clock)

This way, osdclock appears on top of the gnome_panel, as intended.

[Bug 79505] suspend works once only with vde_switch+ tap interface

2007-01-15 Thread frogzoo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Symptom:
Using gnome-power-manager to suspend (by closing lid), suspend will work the
first time only. Subsequently lid closures lock the screen but do not suspend.

Other info:
sudo pmi action suspend works properly for repeated suspends. That's the
reason I'm guessing this bug is against gnome-power-manager.

Resolution:
Tracked it down to the tap0 interface, which is connected to a vde_switch
process.
(This is how /etc/network/interfaces looks)
auto tap0

[Bug 39717] Re: When guest (nobody) account exists, smbpasswd should default to none

2006-08-07 Thread frogzoo
Many of these machines will find themselves connected to the internet
without firewalls in place. Allowing any kind of anonymous access by
default is dubious from a security point of view.

Yes newbs may stumble at first, but there's something to be said for the
default behaviour requiring newbs to come up to speed on security
mechanisms. Leaving it open by default because it will inconvenience
newbs is not for me persuasive.

That said, this is an issue that comes up again again, and detracts

[Bug 54726] Re: Random freezes in X

2006-07-31 Thread frogzoo
This bug is rejected because from the supplied information there's no
way to even start tracking this down.

I initially attributed this to a hardware problem, but I've actually
swapped the video card and disk into a completely different machine and
the problem has recurred. The only other explanation is that the video
card itself is failing and bringing the system down with it.

The most likely cause of strange unexplained hangs isn't hardware
failure, but a poorly performing power supply.

[Bug 54110] Shouldn't depend on gnome-games

2006-07-25 Thread frogzoo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

To reproduce:

sudo dpkg --purge gnome-games
Password:
dpkg: dependency problems prevent removal of gnome-games:
 ubuntu-desktop depends on gnome-games.
dpkg: error processing gnome-games (--purge):
 dependency problems - not removing
Errors were encountered while processing:

This is mostly a matter of personal taste, but I'd prefer not to have
blackjack et al. cluttering the games menu.

[Bug 53619] Re: In nautilus, ubuntu partition should have a better name than filesystem

2006-07-21 Thread frogzoo
I like the idea of assigning a default ubuntu logo to the Computer/root
filesystem, but allow the logo to also be customised through the
gnomevfs.

I think the appropriate name would be the machine's name.

This could also generalise, having other icons for other machines, and
also having icons for groups of networks.

[Bug 50079] Re: CD Burner needs file based temporary directory

2006-07-21 Thread frogzoo
The default install won't even create /tmp, leaving it as a subdirectory
of /, ext3 normally. So for noobs, this isn't an issue.

What you say suggests that if you do a manual install, the installer
creates /tmp as tmpfs.

Seems to me people tweaking their filesystem layout should be able to
figure out that you need enough swap/tmp to burn a cd/dvd, and the
_logical_ place to find a temporary image would be /tmp.

Moving the temporary file will create endless confusion. If you don't
have enough space, the solution is increase swap/the size of /tmp, not
move the directory. Moving the temporary file to /var will result in the
same issues when it fills up, but be harder to figure out what's wrong.
It's also easier to increase the size of /tmp as it's based on swap,
than /var, which may be on its own fixed size partition.

[Bug 52771] Requiers mime type/icon/handler

2006-07-12 Thread frogzoo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gjots2

The files necessary for creating a gjots2 mime association don't exist:

$ ls /usr/share/mime/packages/gjots*
ls: /usr/share/mime/packages/gjots*: No such file or directory
$ ls /usr/share/mime-info/gjots*
ls: /usr/share/mime-info/gjots*: No such file or directory

There is currently no set mime type for gjots2 files, all are stored
without a default filename suffix, and so appear as mime type
text/plain.

gjots should have its own default filename suffix, so that gjots2 files
can be associated with the gjots2 app, without changing the default
association of text/plain.

suffix.

[Bug 52193] Re: Inconsistency between manual page and -h option

2006-07-10 Thread frogzoo
In the English version of Dapper's man page for useradd, there is no
-n option.

compare with dpkg -l given above (which gives version 4.0.13-7, not
4.0.13-7ubuntu3.1 ):

dpkg -l passwd
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name  Version
Description
+++-=-=-==
ii passwd4.0.13-7ubuntu3.1 change

The bug apparently relates to the French version of the useradd manpage,
which lists a -n option, when it shouldn't.

[Bug 52155] Re: Amarok crashes when playing .mp3, .wma, and .ogg files

2006-07-09 Thread frogzoo
From: http://amarok.kde.org/amarokwiki/index.php/FAQ

Amarok crashes during the Collection scan, always at the same point. What's
happening?
It's likely that one file in your Collection triggers a bug in the TagLib
library, and makes Amarok crash. You can identify this file by looking at
~/.kde/share/apps/amarok/collection_scan.log. You should report this crash to
the TagLib bug database on bugs.kde.org and attach the broken file. Afterward
you can remove the file from your Collection and repeat the scanning.
[edit]Amarok crashes when I play a certain track, everytime, what's wrong?
This usually means TagLib is crashing while reading that track's tags. Report
the bug against TagLib at [1].

[edit]audio playback seems choppy. What causes this? Is there anything I can do?
Audio playback can be affected by many things on a Unix/Linux system, including
choice of drivers, sound card, the desktop environment you use, or even the
filesystem you are using. You might try some of the things mentioned here
http://ck.kolivas.org/faqs/audio_hints.txt

[edit]Amarok crashes often, what can I do?
Upgrade your ALSA libs and utils to the latest version, or use OSS, or OSS
emulation
If you use MySQL as the database backend, try the SQLite one, it is slightly
more mature (the Amarok code, not the db itself)
Try a different audio-engine.
Make sure that all the libraries that Amarok uses were compiled with the same
GCC version as Amarok itself. The situation when Amarok is compiled using GCC
3.4.x and linked against taglib which was compiled using GCC 3.3.x can lead to
crashes even if you are not editing tags.
If you're using KDE with artsd, try disabling auto suspend if idle after...
in the sound system settings or at least don't use a value of 1 second since
that will interfere every time amarok switches songs.
Otherwise, forward us the backtraces when the email pops-up (you'll see). If
you get a crash often you will get it fixed for sure if you forward a really
good backtrace to us. See the next sections for assistance there.

I'm running amarok 1.4 on Dapper from an unofficial repo, without
problems.

[Bug 2462] Re: mail-notifcation hogging the CPU polling for GMail

2006-07-08 Thread frogzoo
Confirming this.
Mail-notification goes to 100% trying to connect to a pop3 account whenever the
network is disconnected.

So I imagine the 100% applies whenever connection fails.

The 100% cpu is a major pain, as it kills your battery life double
quick. It makes mail-notification on laptops a serious liability.

[Bug 51866] Re: GRUB splashes doesn't work in Dapper

2006-07-05 Thread frogzoo
Note: Grub expects the filename in the format .xpm.gz

Once you have your .xpm file (from ImageMagick), gzip it.

Lastly, make sure your grub path to the file is correct. From the grub prompt,
you can actually browse display the file images.
root (hd0,6)
splashimage /boot/grub/myfile.xpm.gz

Once you establish grub can find display the file, you update menu.lst.
You need something like:

# Splash Image
splashimage (hd0,6)/boot/grub/myfile.xpm.gz

Then 'sudo update-grub' reboot.

[Bug 51576] Re: rss-glx really slow (only 1-2fps) since recent fglrx driver update

2006-07-05 Thread frogzoo
Installing Ubuntu's supported ATI driver fixes the problem.

Can verify that with the supported ATI driver installed,

   xserver-xorg-d 6.5.7.3-0ubunt X.Org X server -- ATI display driver,

that matrixview and other rss-glx screensavers run much faster, not
quite as fast as fglrx with xscreensaver, but perfectly acceptable.

[Bug 6627] Re: lexmark z53 blank pages

2006-07-04 Thread frogzoo
Make and Model: Lexmark Z52 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.0-rc2
Using only black ink cartridge.

Updated from the test repo deb
http://www.grad.hr/~ivoks/ubuntu/gutenprint ./

Definitely an improvement - there is now ink on the paper, but the print
quality is terrible. At 600dpi, it's print appears in stripes - about a
cm across, then a 1/2 cm is blank, repeated down the page. 1200dpi is
very faint, and 2400dpi is non existent.

The only thing that's printed half way reasonably was the ubuntu test
page at 600dpi.

If you install xscreensaver (4.23-4ubuntu8), then matrixview other

So the bug's not in rss-glx. Reassigning to gnome-screensaver.

[Bug 51576] Re: rss-glx really slow (only 1-2fps) since recent fglrx driver update

2006-07-04 Thread frogzoo
Noticed this comment that exactly describes the problem, so I'd say the
fix is known, and probably available upstream. Note: setting
memoryLimit=0 in ~/.xscreensaver as they suggest does not fix the
problem.

From: /usr/share/doc/xscreensaver-gl/README.gl

If you are having problems with running the GL screenhacs from xscreensaver,
but not from a window, please see
http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/faq.html#gl-mem, especially if you
are using nVIdia's GL implementation. This has appeared as a SIGSEGV
crash and as a failutre to allocate GL context. In particular:

1.I upgraded to 3.33, and xscreensaver won't run GL hacks any more (or
they run slowly), but they work fine from the command line.

Try editing your .xscreensaver file and changing the memoryLimit
setting to 0. Version 3.33 introduced the memoryLimit option as a
precautionary limit to prevent runaway memory use if one of the
display modes happened to be buggy; it prevents any program launched
by xscreensaver from allocating more than that much memory. It
defaults to 50M, which is a lot. However, apparently certain OpenGL
libraries (notably nVidia) do something strange that makes them appear
to allocate more than 128M of memory for every OpenGL program!
Consequently, those programs die on startup because they aren't able
to allocate memory. On some systems, memoryLimit doesn't cause the GL
programs to crash, but instead, causes them to run slowly
(non-accelerated.) Turning off the memory limit should work around
this.

[Bug 51271] Re: Laptop is hibernated even with high battery charge when AC is unplugged and re-plugged

2006-07-04 Thread frogzoo
It might also help to know what ACPI events are being generated.

Could you create the file: /etc/acpi/events/logger
Put in it:

#/etc/acpi/events/logger
event=.*
action=logger event [%e]
--
chmod +x /etc/acpi/events/logger

Now ACPI events will be logged to /var/log/messages

Try tail -f /var/log/messages and if you unplug/plug the ac, you'll
see the ACPI events generated.

If you then grep for those events in /etc/acpi/events, you might have a
good chance of figuring out where the trigger to shutdown is coming
from.

[Bug 51498] Re: fglrx: booting on battery - acpi fails to set low power

2006-07-03 Thread frogzoo
Well, I have the following as a work around to get aticonfig to set low power
mode:
--
In /etc/default/fglrx, uncomment/set:
FGLRX_ACPI_SWITCH_POWERSTATES=true
-
In /etc/default/fglrx, uncomment/set:
FGLRX_ACPI_SWITCH_POWERSTATES=true

Install the fglrx driver make sure you can run 'aticonfig --lsp'

Then we need a modified version of /etc/acpi/fglrx-powermode.sh
-
cat /etc/acpi/fglrx-powermode.sh | sed 's/su \$user -c \\(.*\)\/\1/'
~/bin/fglrx-powermode.sh
chmod +x ~/bin/fglrx-powermode.sh
-
Next, edit/create ~/.gnomerc to call the new script (eg):

sample ~/.gnomerc
--
#!/bin/bash

~/bin/fglrx-powermode.sh
--
chmod +x ~/bin/fglrx-powermode.sh
--

Now if you boot while on battery, ati-config --lsp should indicate the
vid card as in low power mode.

aticonfig --lsp

-

  2: 392/209 MHz [default state]

[Bug 51576] rss-glx really slow (only 1-2fps) since recent fglrx driver update

2006-07-02 Thread frogzoo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

The rss-glx screensavers on dapper used to run at rates similiar to
breezy. Since the recent update to fglrx 8.26.18 (off the Seveas repo),
frame rates are now only 1-2fps. Frame rates are normal (20-30fps) when
run as just the screensaver executable in a window, eg
/usr/lib/xscreensaver/matrixview, so I suspect gnome-screensaver is the
culprit.
