[Bug 908458] [NEW] can't upgrade to 11.10

2011-12-24 Thread hendrikwout
Public bug reported:

I can't upgrade to 11.10. Probably it's because of a bad third party
package, however I cannot discover by which package it is caused.

[Bug 633807] Re: canon IP3000: 'pdftoraster failed' on Maverick

2010-09-09 Thread hendrikwout
I've found a solution: 'sudo apt-get --purge remove ghostscript-cups'
and reinstall the deinstalled packages afterwards. It seems like
something was messed up with the configuration files.

[Bug 633807] Re: canon IP3000: 'pdftoraster failed' on Maverick

2010-09-09 Thread hendrikwout
I just printed a test page from the gnome printer configuration with
standard settings. It also occurs when printing the attached pdf.

Some additional info:
I have upgraded from ubuntu lucid to maverick. I can now say that the printer
worked after the upgrade without changing or resetting any settings in the cups
printing configuration. But when printing pages 173 to 208 from the attached
document with evince, I got a wrong output (see image in attachment).
After seeing this, I've 'deleted' the printer from the printer configuration
and reinstalled the printer with the gnome printer configuration wizard. After
reinstalling, I now allways get this error message (at least for this document
and for printing a test page). Afterwards I-ve tried to reinstall cups (with
'apt-get --purge remove cups' and 'apt-get install cups ubuntu-desktop'), but
that didn't remove the error message.
I connected this printer on another computer (mac os x 10.4). When printing the
same document from maverick with evince to that computer, I got the same weird
output, so it seems that this is a problem of evince. The problem doesn't occur
with acroread. I will make an additional bug report for this problem. (So after
all, it wasn't needed to reinstall the the printer, but this output is a bug in
evince).

I'm trying to print with an canon IP3000 on maverick (upgraded at the

After I give the command 'cupsctl RIPCache=auto', the problem doesn't
disappear.

[Bug 461732] Re: input jack doesn't work on dell xps m1530

2009-11-02 Thread hendrikwout
I found a solution:

run alsamixer in terminal, then set the 'digital' switch to analog (the
'front mic jack mode' switch doesn't do anything, as one might think).
Anyway, I can't find this option/setting in the gnome-volume-control
app.

another thing:
if I run gnome-alsamixer, I can see a 'digital input source' switch, which
doesn't do anything and the terminal gives:

** (gnome-alsamixer:4925): WARNING **: gam_toggle_get_state (). No idea
what to do for mixer element "Digital Input Source"!

[Bug 275998] Re: internal mic capture very low volume when routed through pulseaudio

2009-10-29 Thread hendrikwout
in Karmic Koala 9.10: the gnome-volume-control now has a standard input
gain feature to amplify the volume. Allthough the input volume is very
low on a fresh install, the volume can be easily gained to an acceptable
volume with gnome-volume-control.

Great work of the pulseaudio team!

Offtopic, but related: I still have another problem on the dell xps
m1530 (recording from input jack doesn't work), see bug #461732.

[Bug 458893] [NEW] dns resolution doesn't work with router or virtualbox

2009-10-23 Thread hendrikwout
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

My situation: I'm behind a router.
I downloaded a live cd of karmic koala (9.10). After starting the cd, Internet
seems to be configured well automatically and 'ping www.google.com' works. But
dns-resolution doesn't work with the relay dns of my router for programms like
wget and firefox. In my case the DNS ip-adres (this is my router) is
192.168.1.1. If I change /etc/resolv.conf manually and replace 192.168.1.1 to
208.67.222.222 (a real dns server on the internet), then firefox and wget works
with this DNS-server. For me, this is strange: what is the difference between
the DNS server of the router (192.168.1.1) and the real dns-server
(208.67.222.222)? Anyway, I don't have this problem with ubuntu 9.04.

You can reproduce this error in a very simple way: run the karmic koala
live cd in a virtualbox session, then the DNS server will be also a
relay dns 10.0.2.3, and then you get the same problem, (Also with a
fully updated karmic koala). Again, the problem doesn't occur with
Ubuntu 9.04.

[Bug 304462] [NEW] iwl3945 no wifi at startup, sometimes

2008-12-02 Thread hendrikwout
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I have a Dell Xps m1530 with wireless reported by lspci as:
0b:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network
Connection (rev 02)

Now and then, I don't have wireless internet when starting ubuntu. The
only thing that makes wireless work again, is restarting the computer.
Reloading the module uwl3945 doens't have any effect.

I have this problem in hardy as well as in intrepid.

[Bug 275998] Re: audio recording very silent

2008-11-15 Thread hendrikwout
I'm the original poster of the bug.

This bug report is NOT about a sound device that is not detected. It's
about a detected recording device wich has a very low recording level
(no mic boost).

Disabling pulse audio didn't work for me: recording level is still too
low. I have a dell xps m1530.

[Bug 282808] [NEW] touchpad tapping gets actived on suspend and resume

2008-10-13 Thread hendrikwout
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I have a dell xps m1530. I have disabled tapping with the touchpad. But
when I suspend and resume, the mouse tapping gets activated again.

I can still desactivate it by disabling and enabling tapping from the
gnome-mouse-properties.

This error is reproducable by the following steps:
- turn of mouse tapping in gnome-mouse-properties -> touchpad gets desactivated
- suspend + resume: touchpad gets enabled again.

-> something overrules the touchpad settings when resuming.

I'im running latest ibex alpha

[Bug 250667] Re: [intrepid] iwl3945 not working after resume from hibernation

2008-09-27 Thread hendrikwout

Most of the time, wireless works when resuming from suspend mode. But in some
case it doesn't (i don't see any acces point and can't connect to it).
Reloading the iwl3945-module doesn't get the wireless up again.

I haven't tested resuming from hibernation.

[Bug 270169] [NEW] wpa wireless access point invisable

2008-09-14 Thread hendrikwout
Public bug reported:

I have install hardy en ibex alpha (upgraded) on one laptop.

I'm able to connect to all access points with hardy heron with my dell
xps m1530 which uses iwl3945-module.

But with ibex alpha 4/5, a certain wpa access point is invisible and I
can't connect to it, while hardy connects to it without problems on the
same machine. On the other hand, I can connect to other (unprotected)
access points with Ibex.

I don't know which information I should provid for this bug report.
Please ask.

2008-06-05 Thread hendrikwout

Off topic: If I start compiz with indirect rendering option, I also get a

games, let gnome-power-manager turn off the screen, change screen resolution,
run nvidia-setting etc.

[Bug 160264] Re: [nvidia] compiz displays white screen when locked

2008-04-17 Thread hendrikwout
Quoting from bug #199562 which is marked duplicate:
"When I suspend to disk (hibernate), everything behaves normally. When I
resume, however, all I see is a white screen- no graphics, no distortion, no
image of any kind. I am able to move the cursor around the screen normally, and
in the middle it turns to a text entry cursor, so I click there and enter my
password (which I do not see, no black dots or asterisks or anything) and press
enter, at which point everything is back to normal. The white screen is the
only problem, but it would be easy to think that the computer failed to resume
properly."

I have exactly the same problem here on a dell xps m1530 with same video card.

[Bug 150516] Re: job for canon pixma ip3000 disappears

2008-02-13 Thread hendrikwout
Printing works fine on a i386 pc for this printer

I can't test hardy alpha 4, because it doesn't boot from both an imac
powerbook g3 and a desktop blue imac g3, which is related to another bug
(ide-core not loaded when booting).

I tried (as shown in bug #155027), but no luck with booting the live cd.

[Bug 155027] Re: 7.10 won't boot on G4 PPC (15" TiBook, ATI 9000) after successful install

2008-02-13 Thread hendrikwout
When booting the live cd 'hardy haron alpha 4' on an powerbook g3
without options, I get a small bar showing variuous blues and fading to
white. When using the option video=ofonly, this problem goes away, but
then I'm dropped in to a shell (probably because of ide_core not
loaded). Then I tried

% live-nosplash-powerpc break=premount video=ofonly
...
(initramfs) modprobe ide_core
(initramfs) exit

but it seems that the cd-rom doesn't get mounted :( .

I tried the same also on a desktop imac g3 (a little blue imac) . But
then I get an even worse situation: the usb-driver for the keyboard
doesn't work, probably because of the "premount=break" option (the
keyboard works in the initramfs-shell when leaving that option away).

I think everything really got messed up for G3 (check all my bug
reports), even though I got better (not perfect) experience with
previous releases. :(

[Bug 184283] system hangs when playing sound es1688

2008-01-19 Thread hendrikwout
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I'm using a very old notebook: compaq armada 1592DT. It has 64MB ram so it runs
xubuntu rather slow, but stable.
Only when I play some music for a while (with xmms, or mpg123) the whole system
hangs, and then the music is being looped. When I restart I don't see erro any
messages (/var/log/syslog.0 or /var/log/dmesg.0).

About the soundcard: to make the sound card work, I had to add 'snd-es1688' to
/etc/modules. It's probably an old ISA sound card. The ISA bridge is mentioned
by lspci as:
00:01.0 ISA Bridge: OPTi Inc. 82C700 firestarter (rev31)

[Bug 95889] Re: rt73 wifi not working out of box

2007-12-25 Thread hendrikwout
I also have a D-link DWL-G122 C1 usb pen. The rt73usb.ko module doesn't
work for me at all, even when no encryption is used (I had a very
unstable connection ones with a lot of messages in dmesg and I had to be
really close to the access point). I switched to the driver rt73.ko from
the ralink site. That worked, but as mentionned above, it does work with
NetworkManager and I have to configure by command line. So every time I
put my laptop in standby and resume it, I have to reestablish connection
by hand. :(

I've tried also the windows driver through ndiswrapper. That worked also
, but not with the NetworkManager again.

[Bug 162009] screen goes black when idle (nvidia)

2007-11-11 Thread hendrikwout
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu Gutsy and I have an (old) nvidia-card (which is
working great with xgl, thanks!). I installed the proprietary nvidia
driver. My screen gets blank (monitor doesn't shut down) when not using
the keyboard and mouse for a while, even though the gnome-screensaver
and gnome-powermanagement is turned off. If I move the mouse the screen
turns on again. I think it only occurs with the nvidia driver (not with
the opernsource nv driver). I found a workaround for this bug on some
forum: I had to add a couple of lines in xorg.conf. These are:

 Section "ServerFlags"
#other options can go here
Option "BlankTime" "0"
Option "StandbyTime" "0"
Option "SuspendTime" "0"
Option "OffTime" "0"
EndSection

I consider it as a bug , because it's ennoying when watching a movie for
example and this is not what people want without having to change some
configuration files by hand.

maybe this has something to do with it?:
I installed the package xserver-xgl to get compiz working, because compiz
doesn't start then with if the video card has only 32Mb of memory (found this
solution on a forum)

I think it is.

60-60 works with 24 bit color: this is autoconfigured by Ubuntu live cd.
I guess it's not the screen's fault: even though the display looks
messed up, it's still static (no flickering). So I think the screen can
handle the resolution, but the video chip fails to give a good output.

[Bug 152860] Re: contact list doesn't work correct

2007-10-15 Thread hendrikwout
I found the problem: for some reason, all my contacts' "full name"-field have
the folowing format:
name surname e-mailadres

The e-mailadress shouldn't be there. I don't know how the e-mailadress
has come there, but I think it's because of importing from google's
outlook export, or the transition from feisty to gutsy.

After removing the e-mailadress from the "full name"-field for the names
I want to add to a contact list, the problem doesn't occur.

I also experienced problems with sending e-mail to a contact with the "name
surname e-mailadres"-format for the
"full name"-field.

Thx for the reply

Bug in Gutsy g3 powerpc:

contact list (with the edit-option), all the e-mailadresses disappear. I

[Bug 151013] Re: can't boot linux-image-2.6.22 ppc

2007-10-12 Thread hendrikwout
Yes this can be the problem.

Now, I just compiled the kernel myself from the source code
linux-source-2.6.22. Before I did that, I compared config-2.6.20-15-powerpc and
config-2.6.22-14-powerpc and I saw that 'CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE=y' in
config-2.6.20-15-powerpc, but in config-2.6.22-14-powerpc I see that
'CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE=m'. So I copied config-2.6.22-14-powerpc to .config and
change the 'm' into 'y' for the option 'CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE'.
And yes, that kernel worked after building (with make-kpkg --initrd ...) and
installing (with dpkg) it. So this might be a quick workaround for this bug.

[Bug 151013] Re: can't boot linux-image-2.6.22 ppc

2007-10-10 Thread hendrikwout
I removed the 'quiet' and 'splash' options and now I see that linux-
image-2.6.22-15-powerpc is trying to access /dev/hda4. It seems that the
block device /dev/hda4 doesn't exist for that kernel, allthough I have
such a partition (linux-image-2.6.20-15-powerpc can boot). I tried to
change the optrion root=/dev/hda4 into root=/dev/sda4 in
/etc/yaboot.conf but that didn't help, it has the same error messages
for /dev/sda4 (but now also with linux-image-2.6.20-15-powerpc of
course).

In short: linux-image-2.6.20-15-powerpc sees (makes) a block device, but
linux-image-2.6.22-14-powerpc doesn't.

I hope it's more clear.

[Bug 150516] Re: job for canon pixma ip3000 disappears

2007-10-09 Thread hendrikwout

Uninstalling the packages above didn't help, so I reinstalled the gutsy
packages (upgrade).

I saw on http://localhost:631 that cups first did something with
'ghostscript', so I searched for packages in synaptic that matches
'ghostscript'. I deinstalled the packages:

gs-esp-x gimp-print pnm2ppa gs-esp foomatic-db-
gutenprint ijsgutenprint hpijs ghostscript-x
foomatic-db-engine foomatic-db-hpijs libgutenprintui2-1
libijs-0.35 gs-common libgutenprint2 cupsys-driver-
gutenprintevincelibgs8 ghostscript libgs-
esp8 cupsys gsfonts-x11

and I installed the following packages from feisty:

gs-esp-x gimp-print pnm2ppa gs-esp foomatic-db-
gutenprint ijsgutenprint hpijs foomatic-db-
engine foomatic-db-hpijs libgutenprintui2-1
libijs-0.35 gs-common libgutenprint2 cupsys-driver-
gutenprintevince gs libgs-esp8 cupsys
gsfonts-x11

And now the printer works again, without having to reconfigure the printer.

2007-10-09 Thread hendrikwout
Maybe this info can help also: I deinstalled the following packages and
reinstalled them from the feisty repository and my printer still doesn't
work:

The printer worked with feisty and the Printer still works with other

[Bug 150516] job for canon pixma ip3000 disappears

2007-10-08 Thread hendrikwout
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded from feisty to gutsy on my ppc g3. I tried to print a
test page on my canon pixma ip3000, but that doesn't work. I see the
processes 'rastertogutenprint' and 'gs' that use all cpu for about 20
secs. After that, the canon pixma ip3000 led blinks shortly (2 secs).
And then, the print job just disapears and nothing is printed. This

[Bug 140770] beidgui can't find libpcsclite.so

2007-09-18 Thread hendrikwout
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: beidgui

I installed the beidgui package. 2 problems:

1. beidgui can't find libpcsclite.so . So this seems to be a dependency
problem in the ubuntu package system.

2 After I've installed the 'libpcsclite1', beidgui still can't find
libpcsclite.so . I looked into a the /usr/lib directory and I saw that
there is a file named libpcsclite.so.1 . Thus, beidgui looks at the
wrong place.

After creating a symbolic link manually, it worked. But there is where
the 'human being' stops :) .

 I'm using feisty on a 32 bit i386 machine.

[Bug 133495] some codec crashes totem and gnash on ppc

2007-08-19 Thread hendrikwout
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I would like to play the video's on www.vrtnieuws.net . I think these
are wmv-format. On a i386 it works (after installing the codecs). On ppc
(imac g3) however, the totem-mozilla-plugin crashes. The videos on
youtube don't work either through gnash (I use version 0.8.0 from the
feisty-backports) (Gnash crashes). I also tried to open the videos from
www.vrtnieuws.net with vlc and mplayer plugins , but they crash also
with these videos.

Totem doesn't crash with all video content (like the videos from a sony
photo camera ), so I think it's one of the codecs that doesn't work
correctly on ppc.

[Bug 133119] no dri or xgl on imac g3

2007-08-17 Thread hendrikwout

X.org works in 1024x768 resolution 24 bit mode, but dri (Direct rendering 3D)

I also tried 16 bit mode to save video ram, but in that mode, X.org hangs and

[Bug 110345] Re: usb disk umount problem

2007-05-10 Thread hendrikwout
Same problem for me with feisty for both ppc en i386. Very ennoying.

It's resolved when uninstalling gnome-mount gnome-volume-manager and
installing pmount and gnome-volume-manager from the edgy repository. It
look like gnome-mount doesn't work yet.

Greetz.

2006-11-18 Thread hendrikwout
I've installed the latest dapper updates (I hope this is
equivalent to 6.06.1), but still the same problem. I didn't try it
yet with edgy.
