[Bug 343749] Re: LSI SAS 1078 not detected when installing

2015-12-28 Thread Gad Maor
I can confirm this issue has not been resolved yet in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
latest ISO.

Tried the iommu=soft solution -> didn't work.

Tried to load every kernel module that seemed even remotely connected to
the issue via the BusyBox tty -> no joy :(

This is a major issue, since it's hampering installation of Ubuntu
Server on our servers.

I found out that the mfi module might fix this issue :
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/trusty/man4/mfi.4freebsd.html
but for some reason it's not included in the Ubuntu Server 14.04 installation
ISO.

2010-10-20 Thread Maor
I can confirm that using 2.6.36 kernel from natty (I'm using the pae
variant) the situation it's much better, there are still some short
spike in kworker thread from time to time which causing short freezes .
disabling the poll parameter in kms_drm_helper mitigate the problem
completely (as in the 36 rc series).

[Bug 595764] Re: Mouse often hangs after upgrade to 35-2, 35-4 kernels

2010-10-13 Thread maor
I've tested few kernel and all kernel post 2.6.35 are no good, 2.6.36-rc7 even
worse it cause a complete lockup of the OS for few few seconds.

2.6.36-rc7 - not good
2.6.36.-rc5 - not good (although better than rc7)
2.6.35-22 - no good
2.6.34 - good
2.6.32 (lucid kernel) - good

The only option to work with newer kernels is to disable polling.

Using a ThinkPad T400 in 32-bit PAE mode (w/i915 graphics).

[Bug 196277] Re: [hardy] keyboard layout switching shortcut doesn't work after reboot

2008-05-06 Thread maor
according to the link upstream this bug wont be fixed any time soon
(wont be ready for 7.4) i suggest we distribute the script using
automatic update .

** Description changed:

In the keyboard layout preferences, you can set Both alt keys together
change layout, which worked in Gutsy for toggling between keyboard
  layouts.

  Currently:
  * both alt keys... does not toggle keyboard layouts
  * both ctrl keys... does not toggle keyboard layouts
  * both shift keys... works fine
  * Alt+shift works fine

  Steps to reproduce it are:
  * Visit System-Preferences-Keyboard-Layouts
  * Press Add and add a new layout.
  * Close preferences.
  * Open Text Editor or whatever you want and write something with Double-Alts
it switch layout and writes with the other layout
  OK till now.
  * Reboot.
  * Open a text editor and try to switch layout... Boom! It doesn't work!

Temporary Workaround. Open Layouts again and remove/add the second
  layout to start working again.

+ another workaround using a script:
+
The text in the applet will change, to make it appear to be setting the
correct layout, but the changes do not take effect.
Actually shortcut doesn't work at all, I set to be alts toggle in keyboard
preferences, and it doesn't work, another thing is that even with keyboard
indicator applet you change language, it doesn't changes, name in the applet
changes, but it doesn't work. I need to open keyboard preferences, layout
options, remove the tick and then put it back on keyboard layout switching
shortcut.. As I said, shortcut doesn't work after this, but applet starts to
change the layout, not only letters on itself.

This issue has been sufficiently confirmed. Please do not comment on
this bug unless you have some information that will help solve the bug.

didnt know how to fix this)
either you upload a update that disables tracker or you upload a fix.

out of politeness im not going to change this to fixed committed i
know you want to drop the statistics on how many bugs are there in the

tell us how it went.

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-02-02 Thread maor
its weird the you say that the situation is the same in windows yet some
people say windows does not park the heads at all.

if it is true it means that a windows machine hard drive would not last
long before being destroyed by the high load/unload count.

there are two options:

1) your hard drive can handle all this loading/unloading so its enabled
2)some how results of your tests are screwed up. (this does not necessarily
mean you are doing something wrong)

either way i dont know what to tell you. the only idea i have is
contacting your hard drive manufacturer and asking him but all this.

imo this problem is not being fixed because no one is making a
consistent effort to test the situation on both Linux and windows. if
you want to put some effort in to it myself and other will try to offer
suggestions.

maybe we can compile a list of people with models whose hard drives
where trashed because if this problem to put some pressure on having
someone who can actually commit code and is more experienced at solving
this kind of problems.

2008-01-30 Thread maor
with 25 loads onloads the hard drive should survive for about three years which
is much more reasonable then 7 months.
my machine at least has a much higher count per hour.
in that case its just a matter of noisy processes on Linux which keep waking up
the hard drive and in that case there is no easy fix.
i will be much more interested with people with windows machine which do not
have load unload cycles at
all.

btw: too bad no official Ubuntu developers are showing any interest in this.
this bug is rated critical yet no work is done on him.

well if what you say is true then thats a whole different ball game.
still i find it hard to believe . make no mistake no one will be happier
then me to see a big fat headline on slashdot that windows is also
destroying people hard drive . i cant read Italian so tell me did they
check for load/unload cycle count with smartct ? we already established
that noise alone is not an indication.also no one said that on ac power
the problem goes away (unless you apply the ugly fix).it is possible
that this happens on windows and also on linux but maybe im missing
something but i dont think it can happen only on windows.you say you
tested with hdparm or do you mean smartctl and if not what is it exactly
you tested?. if more people with dual boot can test properly we could
get to the bottom of this.

to Matthias Dietrich: is your computer a OEM install? (maybe the
manufacturer made some kind of tweak) did you use smartctl?

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-01-04 Thread maor
this is my ambitious attempt at tackling this issue.
i created a blueprint at
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/handlingtooagressivepowermanagment
that summaries the usfull information found in this bug report (and became
impossible to extract because of the high noise ratio) and brainstorming
possible solutions.
i just want to clarify that i am not a Ubuntu developer and there is no
guarantees that someone would actually even try to fix this bug.
i think the key to solving this issue is to simply find out how is it that
windows is not suffering from this issue. i know people think windows do not
suffer from this issue because it does not write to the hard drive as often as
Ubuntu but according to comment
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/59695/comments/308
that is not true and bringing Ubuntu to the same state as windows is a
acceptable solution to most users.

[Bug 120834] Re: intel gm965 freezes with 3d applications

the best we can do in regard to hardware configuration is to provide a list of
laptop models that are affected which i did sense laptop based on the santa

as for testing for software configuration i agree someone should test with a
fresh install because i do not think the live cd has anything that activates 3d
unfortunately (or maybe luckily) i cant test because i am not effected.

the bug is caused even while rendering the most basic 3d so i do not
think its related to the windows bug you described ( i am not shore even
if windows and linux share the same code base for the intel drive even
if it is open source) but of course i have been wrong before...

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2007-12-24 Thread maor
Matthias:

i would not relay on clicking sound to identify load unload cycles i made the
same mistake,
if windows is not changing the apm value then then my guess is that ubuntu is
simply accessing the hard drive too often
i do not have windows installed so i cant check it but try seeing if the load
unload count is going up while using the computer if its actually going up we
can assume that this is a issue with some process in ubuntu.

trying to figure out when the hard drive is being parked unparked is
impossible only by the sound of the laptop. my laptop still clicks
sometimes after i changed my apm but the load unload count is not going
up.

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2007-12-16 Thread maor
** Description changed:

This is not a support forum. Please do not use it as such (even though
it has been used as such already).

You can scan through the bug for links to the Ubuntu forums where many,
many different questions have been asked, answered, and re-answered.
The temporary workaround is just below, but you may need to use '254',
or a bit lower, as opposed to '255'. If HD temperature gets high, you
may want to set it all the way down to 200 or so. ~1 click every
  2.5-3 minutes is fine.

- Temporary workaround: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-
- support/+bug/59695/comments/14
-
+ Temporary workaround:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/59695/comments/14
+ [edit] perhaps a more extensive one:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=591503
Following is a summary of the issue:
It is confirmed that some systems are seeing an unusually high number of
load/unload cycles on their hard disks, as evidenced by smartctl. It was
originally surmised that this was related to laptop-mode being enabled, but
this affects systems *regardless* of whether or not laptop-mode has been
enabled. In fact, aggressive APM is not a bad idea while a system is not on
AC, as that system is much more likely to encounter a physical impact. But
unfortunately, the heads never stay parked, due to very frequent disk activity.

This problem has been confirmed in Ubuntu as well as in other
  distributions.

  Symptoms of this bug are:
  * frequent HD clicks -- more than one per 3 minutes while idle, louder than
the typical access sounds. Often more than twice per minute.
  * Rapidly Increasing Load_Cycle_Count as displayed in the final number in
sudo smartctl -a /dev/hda | grep Load_Cycle_Count (where /dev/hda is replaced
with your own hard disk device)
  * Early hard disk failure -- some disks are cut down to less than a year of
actual uptime.

The problem is only present due to the existence of *all three* of the
following factors:
  * Hardware is set (default or otherwise) to aggressive power management,
causing heads to park. (default behaviour of many drives)
  * Disk is touched often, causing heads to unpark. (default behaviour of many
distributions)
  * Drives are spec'd to a limited number of these cycles. (600,000 is the
most common, although some may be spec'd higher or lower).

Reasonable Limits / Criteria for a fix:
  * There should be fewer than ~15 load cycles per hour, except during heavy
usage while on battery.
  * This provides a life expectancy of over four years, which is reasonable for
a hard disk.

  Temporary Workaround:
  * Follow the above link.

  Some hardware with this issue:
  WD1200VE -- http://www.wdc.com/en/library/portable/2879-001121.pdf -- This
aggressive parking is a feature of this disk, but that feature relies on
behaviour that allows for significant amounts of (truly) idle time without the
disk being touched. Notice the Load/unload cycles of 600,000.

  Example Load_Cycle_Counts:
  * Thinkpad Z60m/Hitachi HTS541080G9SA00 with well over 7000 load cycles in
only 100 hours. That's 70 per hour.
  * Gateway MT6451/Western Digital WD1200VE with 164762 load cycles in 3747
hours (156 days) of uptime. That's ~43 per hour -- except that the system was
patched during the initial third of its life, which puts it at ~63/hour since
Gutsy was installed (and wasn't patched, as I had done with feisty).

Please see for yourself how often your drive is load cycling:
  smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda
(This command is for an SATA drive; you'll need to install the smartmontools
package first.)

You can get the average per hour by the following division:
  Load_Cycle_Count / Power_On_Hours

  See also http://paul.luon.net/journal/hacking/BrokenHDDs.html for a
rather dramatic account of the effects the current default values may
  have.

[Bug 131132] Re: i915 crash in getDrawableInfo

2007-12-15 Thread maor
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 120834 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/120834

this bug was marked as a duplicate of bug #120834 but after looking at
your xorg log and at the xorg log posted in the other bug report i fail
to see how these bugs are the same problem. its true that they both
crash 3d on a intel gma but thats the only way there related and most
chances are these are two different bugs in the intel driver.

either way i suggest reporting this bug directly upstream at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/index.cgi sense ubuntu developers are not
showing interest neither in this bug report nor in the so called
duplicate bug report.

perhaps providing a small opengl source code file to reproduce the bug
will help.

[Bug 120834] Re: intel gm965 freezes with 3d applications

2007-12-08 Thread maor
this bug is known for about six month and the upstream developers have not
managed to reproduce it see:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11847
i am also working with a x3100 santa rosa but it is working perfectly.
posting here about how your also suffering from the problem is not going to
help.
if you want to see this bug fixed and help the linux community in general i
suggest you go to the thread and try to work out what hardware-software
combination is causing this so the developer can actually start working on the
fix and i dont see this bug getting fixed until that happens.

i know its a hassle but in the world of linux/open source thats how
things get done.

[Bug 120834] Re: intel gm965 freezes with 3d applications

2007-11-30 Thread maor
Bergje, i looked at your xorg.log and found this line
Error in I830WaitLpRing(), timeout for 2 seconds
and found this bug report at xorg bugzilla:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11847
the buttom line is that the graphic engine hangs, and after disabling dri the
problem seems to go away.
try editing the intel device section in xorg.conf to:
Section Device
Identifier Intel Corporation 82G965 Integrated Graphics
Controller
Driver intel
BusID PCI:0:2:0
Option AccelMethod EXA
Option DRI false
EndSection
note that i am not certain adding Option AccelMethod EXA is
nessecery and you should avoid it sense EXA is note suppose to be production
ready.
also disabling dri will probably hurt performance but thats better than having
no 3d at all.

btw: if the workaround works for you consider telling them your hardware
info to try and help xorg developers in finding a solution.
