[Bug 224985] Re: firefox-3.0, not saving history or bookmarks, the navigations buttons (foward, back, etc) does not work

2009-04-11 Thread Rich Fromm
I haven't followed through this whole thread in detail, but fwiw I had a
problem in firefox 3.0.8 on Ubuntu 8.10 on an XO (OLPC) laptop not
saving bookmarks across restart (history and other prefs were fine), and
I solved it with the details here:

[Bug 225257] Re: Firefox 3 Beta 5 not saving normal or live bookmarks

2009-04-11 Thread Rich Fromm
I was experiencing the same problem. Ubuntu 8.10 on an XO (OLPC)
laptop. I had reported it here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7040160#post7040160

And another user echoed the same problem as well on a DellE520, ff3.0.8,
jaunty.

I tried gregory's suggestion. The short answer is that it was bookmarkbackups
that was the problem. This was a pretty much new install/config (I noticed
nearly right away that bookmarks weren't working
-- I had never been able to successfully save a single one after a restart),
so I still think there is some kind of bug in terms of why did this happen,
although it's nice to have a fairly simple workaround.

More details about my exact steps taken are below.

[Bug 356768] [NEW] ath5k driver hangs periodically, please include trivial patch in kernel

2009-04-06 Thread Rich
Public bug reported:

Precisely as the title says - I have the ath5k non-LBM driver in use, on
latest Jaunty, amd64, 2.6.28-11-generic, and I periodically have the
problems described on bugzilla.kernel.org's bug #12068.

There has been a patch available for ~4 months, which is approximately
10 lines all told, and simply adds sanity checks to the reset call in
the driver which causes the problem. It's worked for me for four months,
and I've been adding it by hand.

Please add it to L-B-M and/or the core kernel package - I know many
other ath5k users with this problem, and this patch is sufficiently
trivial that I'd be sad if it doesn't end up in.

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=19574 is the patch.

[Bug 264196] Re: [intrepid] keyboard Repeat Keys is failing to adjust

2009-04-05 Thread Rich Wales
Intending no disrespect here to the developers, I am less than happy
about the apparent decision not to try to fix this bug in Intrepid. It
was my understanding that Intrepid was supposed to be supported for
another year. Also, the conflicting reports regarding the nature and
extent of this bug -- people saying the bug appears and goes away for no
apparent reason, people disagreeing on whether fixes work for them or
not, etc. -- suggest to me that the problem still might not be fully
understood, and that this isn't a good time to abandon groups of users
yet.

An individual named Rohan submitted this .deb package file for TripleA.

I am relatively new to Launchpad.

"I am a new person who has just added myself to the triplea-developers

Windows and MacOS, but there are no packages for any Linux distributions
aside from the the all_platforms zip. I've written a script that
creates an Ubuntu/Debian package, from the all_platforms zip file and a
version number. For example, running on a Debian/Ubuntu system the
command

[Bug 337040] Re: [LENOVO ThinkPad T61] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-03-20 Thread Rich
Came here to report a similar problem.

The machine comes back from hibernate sometimes (modulo a bug in the
ath5k driver).

The machine always "comes back" from suspend, but the graphics never
come back up - I can switch VTs using Ctrl-Alt-F[1-7] appropriately, and
I can tell it's switching because the Caps and Num Lock lights vary by
VT (e.g. if I set Caps Lock on VT1 and then switch to VT6, the light
goes off, and comes back again if I switch back to VT1), but nothing
ever displays on the LCD.

I can reproduce this endlessly. I just suspend and try to resume. Easy as pie.

This user has a Quadro 140M, and I have a Quadro 270M. (T61 vs T61p).
Apport just kicked me over here to file this bug, though, so I'm
reasonably certain it's valid.

Suspend has never worked in Jaunty for me.

[Bug 264196] Re: [intrepid] keyboard Repeat Keys is failing to adjust

2009-03-17 Thread Rich Wales
Gumby, the builtin keyboard on a laptop is hooked up (internally) to the
computer the same way as an external PS/2-style keyboard would be. This
explains why the workaround (with a "kbdrate" command) fixes your
laptop's internal keyboard.

Wolfwitch, when you say that the "kbdrate" workaround works for you
"when using any keyboard", are you trying this with both PS/2 and USB
keyboards? If this workaround fixes a USB keyboard, I think that's
news.

And I'm having a hard time, too, accepting that this bug is too hard to
fix quickly.

[Bug 264196] Re: [intrepid] keyboard Repeat Keys is failing to adjust

2009-03-17 Thread Rich Wales
And everyone should note that this issue also applies to desktops, since
most keyboards nowadays use USB (and may or may not come with one of
those purple USB-to-PS/2 keyboard adapters). Once I read here that the
problem was specifically affecting USB keyboards, I knew enough to try
using the PS/2 jack (and I happened to have one of those old adapters
lying around!) -- but we cannot expect the average, inexperienced user
to have either the knowhow or the wherewithal to do this.

I wasn't talking about trying to use the command to display current

generically to the command (with an appropriate, but unspecified
argument list). And I'm not sure why "kbdrate -r 4 -d 750" works for
you, because (as I said) it's not working for me.

[Bug 264196] Re: [intrepid] keyboard Repeat Keys is failing to adjust

2009-03-16 Thread Rich Wales
As best I can tell, this "kbdrate" command DOES NOT WORK AT ALL on my
system (Intrepid, 2.6.27-11-generic).

I have a Microsoft Digital Media Pro keyboard (configured in Keyboard
Preferences as a "Generic 105-key (Intl) PC" model), which I've tried
connecting to my desktop both via its native USB connector and via a
purple adapter to the PS/2 keyboard jack. I've tried "kbdrate -r 4 -d
750", both in /etc/rc.local and in a terminal window, but I still get a
much faster keyboard autorepeat no matter what I do.

The xorg.conf workaround also DOES NOT WORK AT ALL for me.

I am most definitely not a novice, but I fully agree with "Gumby" that
this is a critical bug for novices. Even if one of the workarounds
we've been discussing did happen to work, it is not acceptable to expect
a newbie to type a command in a terminal window (much less edit a
configuration file) even ONCE -- to say nothing of doing it every time
they restart or log in.

[Bug 302485] Re: No persistence with USB Creator in Ubuntu 8.10

2009-03-12 Thread Rich
I repro the "no persistence" on several separate ubuntu machines. I
don't recall the attempts to write making the stick unbootable though.

Was using a 4GB corsair, freshly formatted fat32. ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04
AMD64. I maxed out the persistence file size for my stick (about 3.1
GB). usb-creator proceeded to write the iso to the disk but at the end a
small window with a red warning circle with a white horizontal line
appeared. There was no text message. I closed that out & rebooted. It
booted into the live system properly. I created a small text file on the
desktop and one in / . neither one persisted through a subsequent
clean reboot.

As a test I later manually created a casper-rw file in the root of my
usb stick (there was not one present) and persistence started working. I
see the casper packages are not a dependency of the usb-creator package.
Lupine: do you have them installed? I do not.

there's a thread over at ubuntu forums where several people report
problems w/ persistence:

It stops doing this if I downgrade all of the relevant libraries (gtk2

libgtkmm from 2.15.4 to 2.15.3.

[Bug 328632] Re: gnome-thumbnail-font high cpu usage

2009-02-12 Thread Rich
I've had this issue, but I can reproduce it reliably - when I try to
browse my SD card, one of my .dol files (a GameCube executable format)
is misidentified as a font, and gnome-thumbnail-font tries to thumbnail
it...forever. It pegs my CPU at 100% usage until killed, which is
unpleasant on a laptop.

Latest jaunty.

[Bug 324482] [NEW] laptop beeps three times on resume from hibernate even if pc speaker module is blacklisted

2009-02-02 Thread Rich
Public bug reported:

ThinkPad T61p, Ubuntu Intrepid latest as of today.

I blacklisted the pc speaker modules in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, and
update-initramfs -u. Nevertheless, on resume from hibernate, I
experience three beeps from my laptop speakers, which really sound like
the beep from the PC speaker, but are very annoying, esp. in public.

I'm assuming this isn't my PC speaker and is instead my sound card, but
I'm unsure how to mute it, as there is no config option anywhere for
this, insofar as I can see. I don't want to blacklist the module...I
just want it to load late.

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2008-12-01 Thread Rich Wales
And the "pam-keyring-tool" workaround didn't work for me either. I was
still being prompted for the login password.

However, it looks like I was finally able to get rid of the "unlock
keyring" prompt by using "pam-keyring-tool -c" and entering an empty
password (just hit ENTER) for the new password. So I guess maybe I have
a workaround after all. Average users, however, would probably have a
terrible time with this, so I would say there is still a serious bug.

[Bug 137247] Re: libpam-keyring broken on autologins

2008-12-01 Thread Rich Wales
Not for me, it doesn't. I upgraded a new Hardy system to Intrepid
today, and it's started demanding "Enter login password to unlock
keyring" after doing an autologin. It wasn't doing that in 8.04.1
before I did the upgrade.

This new system was going to be for my mother, who is not very computer-
savvy at all. I was hoping to convert her computer from Windows XP to
Ubuntu, but a crucial part of that plan was that the new system was
going to use autologin and timed login so she wouldn't ever need to
enter a password. (It's her home system, and she lives alone, so the
security risk of autologin is acceptable -- and I'll do all the software
updates and such which would require an admin password or "sudo".) This
seemed to be working just fine when I initially installed 8.04.1, but
upgrading to 8.10 broke it.

This is a SHOWSTOPPER. Unless I can get rid of this prompt to "unlock
the keyring", my mom simply WILL NOT ACCEPT this awkward new system and
will insist on keeping her Windows system. (Or else I guess I'll have
to wipe the new disk, reinstall Hardy, and set up everything all over
again from scratch WITHOUT upgrading to Intrepid.)

[Bug 287714] Re: caps lock as additional control broken on intrepid

2008-11-30 Thread Rich Wales
I believe the relevant file with the settings from the keyboard
preferences control panel is:

$HOME/.gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/%gconf.xml

Here's what it looks like on my freshly installed 8.04.01 system (where
the caps lock -> control setting in the control panel is not effective
after a restart):

ctrl ctrl:nocaps

Compose key
compose:rwin

eurosign eurosign:5

Note the first in the section. It
looks OK to me (it's the same info as what the above workaround said I
should put in /etc/X11/xorg.conf), so I'm not sure why it wouldn't be
working.

resources. I don't know if that is useful information in tracking the
problem down... at least, the problem doesn't seem to be restricted to
that type of resource.

If I can send you any other info that helps, just let me know.

[Bug 286905] Re: [SRU req.] kdepim stability fixes; calendar crashes when using google calendar [regression]

2008-11-26 Thread Rich Ibbotson
I have just updated to 3.5.10-0ubuntu1~hardy3 from hardy-updates, but I still
see the GCal crash (LP: #286905).
dpkg-query -l 'kdepim*' shows the following:
kdepim-dbg 4:3.5.10-0ubuntu1~hardy3
kdepim-dev
kdepim-doc 4:3.5.10-0ubuntu1~hardy3
kdepim-kio-plugins 4:3.5.10-0ubuntu1~hardy3
kdepim-kresources 4:3.5.10-0ubuntu1~hardy3
kdepim-wizards 4:3.5.10-0ubuntu1~hardy3

I've attached the kcrash. I can produce a valgrind report if you would
like to see one.

[Bug 155415] Re: Thunderbird freezes on dual core system

2008-11-19 Thread Rich Wales
Hi, John -- Thanks for your comments.

I tried changing the way I launch Thunderbird. Instead of invoking the
executable directly, I am now exec'ing it from a shell script that
captures any output into a log file. After I did this, Thunderbird
courteously obliged by freezing :-}, and I got the following error:

*** glibc detected *** /home/richw/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird-bin:
malloc(): memory corruption: 0xaad841a0 ***

plus a backtrace and a memory map, which I'm including here as an
attachment.

Since this is my production work environment, I really can't "disable
all plugins/addons/extensions" without creating what, for me, would be
an unusable setup. If there's any way at all to use the error output I
just got to identify any offending add-on, that would be very helpful to
me in this situation.

Been informed that using WPA PEAP, try connecting using PEAP v0 instead

Workaround: KNetworkManager has an expert settings option in the profile

[Bug 155415] Re: Thunderbird freezes on dual core system

2008-11-08 Thread Rich Wales
I don't know if it's reproducible in 8.10. My work desktop has been
running 8.04 (2.6.24-21-generic) for some time, and Thunderbird (now
2.0.0.17) still freezes regularly. I can't upgrade to 8.10 yet because
this is a production machine which I depend on at work, and I don't have
any other similar hardware available to do testing on.

a week and a half ago to upgraded to Kubuntu 8.10 beta. After that the
issue was resolved. But thank you very much for taking the time to consider

[Bug 290777] [NEW] gnome terminal paste and profile preferences

2008-10-29 Thread Rich Deppisch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

gnome-terminal:
  Installed: 2.24.1-0ubuntu1

  Version table:
 *** 2.24.1-0ubuntu1 0

Gnome terminal has two options with the same hotkey in the edit menu.
Both "Paste" and "Profile Preferences" share the letter "P".
Previously, one could press "ALT+e" and then "P" to paste, now it is
ambiguous and only selects between the two options.

Expected behavior: Paste contents of the clipboard buffer at current

[Bug 286905] Re: contact crash in calendar after update kde 3.5.10

2008-10-25 Thread Rich Ibbotson
I am not one of the people to report the original crash, but I do see a
crash using Korganizer (within Kontact) when I have enabled a Google
calendar in read-only mode. I believe that this is the same problem
that Andreas has reproduced. The crash report is attached, and it looks
very similar.

My steps to reproduce this problem (note that this started occurring
with kde 3.5.10; I had done the same steps previously with kde 3.5.9
without a crash):

1) Open kontact, switch to calendar
2) "Enable" a Google calendar by checking the checkbox in the Resource View
3) Scroll the calendar window.

On scrolling the calendar window, kontact/korganizer will crash.

It's interesting to note that I can no longer even disable the Google
calendar in the Resource View by clicking on the checkbox. Attempting
to click anywhere in the korganizer view seems to crash kontact in the
same way. I've disabled this resource by
~/.kde/share/config/kresources/calendar/stdrc by hand and setting
ResourceIsActive=false for the Google calendar. The most recent change
to my system was to install kdepim-dbg and valgrind.

I will attempt to attach a valgrind report to another comment.

[Bug 163482] Re: Xinerama cursor problem in second monitor

2008-10-23 Thread Rich Wales
No, I haven't been having this problem for several months now.

I'm currently running 8.04 (2.6.24-21-generic) -- same video card and
monitors, still Xinerama -- and the cursor works just fine on both
monitors.

I don't remember exactly when the problem went away, but I think it
would probably have been after I upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy. Sorry I
forgot to come back here and update the bug report at the time.

And FWIW, I never had this problem on my home machine (where I'm using
an Nvidia card and Twinview -- something I don't have the option of
doing on my work desktop).

Re: [Bug 285737] Re: synaptic package manager crashes in ubuntu 8.10 beta

2008-10-20 Thread Rich
The problem is not one particular package--the program freezes when I type
the letter "o" in the search criteria. If I begin to type "compiz"-- as
soon as I type "co" Synaptic freezes; if I want to type "fonts" as soon as I
type "fo" it freezes. Every time I have to do a forced quit.

Maybe I just have to reinstall Synaptic Package Manager because it has
become useless for any program that has an "o" in the name.

[Bug 285737] [NEW] synaptic package manager crashes in ubuntu 8.10 beta

2008-10-18 Thread Rich
Public bug reported:

Synaptic Package Manager crashed as I was typing my search criteria. I have
just installed the Beta version of Ubuntu 8.10. I wanted to install compiz
and gparted. As I typed "co" the program crashed. This happened twice.
After the first time Synaptic was so unstable that it would not remain open. I
restarted my computer and ran it again. Same thing except that this time I can
reopen Synaptic.
Sorry I cannot give the package version. Synaptic won't work and when I enter
the command below in terminal I get: 'W: Unable to locate package packagename.'
 I give up.

For what it is worth, I have always found Synaptic to be one of the two
weakest programs in Ubuntu (along with Network Manager).

[Bug 269083] Re: gnome-power-manager crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2008-10-13 Thread Rich
In a brief glance, I can't find anywhere a TIME string could be coming
from - TIME as a string literal doesn't appear anywhere in the compiled
binary that I can see, nor does a toupper call.

How very novel.

[Bug 276508] Re: [intrepid] [Atheros AR5211] ath5k driver inoperative, wpa_supplicant never completes connection

2008-10-08 Thread Rich
Same here - ath_pci and ath_hal blacklisted, reboot, cannot connect
using network mangler.

I can do it using wpa_supplicant, but network_mangler fails.

[Bug 267141] Re: suspend button disappears after pm-utils upgraded to 1.1.2.4-1ubuntu2

2008-10-07 Thread Rich
I feel like this is already intrinsically disruptive for any Ubuntu
users who try to use it - I'd like to see, at minimum, the above patch
go in. Ideally, I'd like to see 1.2.2.1 - this was certainly disruptive
for me, as a user, when I upgraded and found my suspend button missing;
since hibernate doesn't work on my laptop, this left me SOL.

[Bug 261142] Re: ath5k driver causes Ubuntu to freeze

2008-10-07 Thread Rich
I still have this problem.

I have hardlocks from the ath5k driver using 2.6.27-5-generic. Sometimes
it's a soft lockup, and the card "only" stops working...and other times,
the card hardlocks my machine, and no output is salvageable. SysRq does
not function, and /var/log/syslog noted nothing.

Tragically, this laptop has no serial port with which to dump debug
information when this occurs. Any other thoughts on how to salvage the
information?

[Bug 269253] Re: ath5k with AR5424 fails at startup or resume

2008-10-07 Thread Rich
Same behavior on my T61p - Tyler, you might try what I've found helpful
sometimes. Try removing all power from the laptop - including the
battery, and then plugging it back in 30s later.

The card seems to be put into a very inconsistent state by these
drivers.

[Bug 272185] Re: [Intrepid] network-manager will not connect to a WPA Enterprise network

2008-10-06 Thread Rich
Ding ding ding.

Works flawlessly if I use wpa_supplicant, not so much if I try network-mangler.
Network-mangler 0.7~~svn20080928t225540+eni0-0ubuntu2
NIC: 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5212 802.11abg
NIC (rev 01)
Uname: Linux eris 2.6.27-4-generic #1 SMP Wed Sep 24 01:29:06 UTC 2008 x86_64
GNU/Linux

I'm going to go compile 0.6 and see what I get.
