[Bug 1871593] Re: User receives prompt on login: "Authentication is required to create a color managed device"

2024-09-06 Thread Sam Darwin
Could someone comment about this issue, even if it's not fixed?
- Why is the popup needed?
- What is the effect if you agree, and provide auth information?
- What is the effect if you don't agree, and don't provide auth info? Will
something not work, if you don't proceed with auth?

[Bug 2044664] Re: HDMI plugin after boot, but display can't work

2024-08-19 Thread sam shen
Dear ethan.hsieh
I update kernel and test again.
The display will not show login frame if boot without HDMI and plugin after
boot.
Then I execute command in console
# systemctl restart gdm

The HDMI display will show login frame.

[Bug 2044664] Re: HDMI plugin after boot, but display can't work

2024-08-19 Thread sam shen
Dear ethan.hsieh
Thanks for reply. My kernel is 5.15.0-1029.33. I will try to update kernel to
latest version.
I check the kernel log, it can detect HDMI plugin and send notify to
framework.
The HDMI monitor can display right timing but black screen.
It seems Weston don't handle the plugin event.

2024-07-27 Thread Sam Rist
** Description changed:

My laptop is a thinkbook 14 g6 abp and this issue occurs on every distro
- I tried and in different desktop environments. If I hold down one of the
- volume keys for roughly half a second or longer; the key will then
- repeatedly press itself forever even after I stop holding the button. It
- only stops when I quickly tap either the volume up or down button.
+ I tried and in different desktop environments. If I quickly tap or hold
+ down either volume key; the key will then repeatedly press itself
+ forever even after I stop holding the button. The only way to stop it by
+ pressing either key for a specific amount of time which will make it
+ change the volume normally.

  The distros I tried were:
  Kubuntu 24.04 (plasma)
  Linux Mint 21.3 (cinnamon)
  Fedora 40 (plasma)
  Debian 12.6 (xfce)

[Bug 2065708] Re: Add Picture button in Background does not allow you to select wallpaper

2024-06-25 Thread Sam Lane
Tested this fix on a machine running Ubuntu Budgie 24.04 which currently
is experiencing this issue.

Steps taken to test:
 -Installed apparmor from noble-proposed
 -Confirmed version was apparmor_4.0.1-0ubuntu0.24.04.2
 -After installing, opened budgie-control-center
-Selected the Background page, clicked the "Add Picture" button, and selected
a folder containing images
-Confirmed that when an image was selected, the thumbnail is now properly shown
-Confirmed that when an image was selected, the Open button was now enabled
-Clicked the Open button and confirmed the image is now added to the selection
of available background images and is now able to be set as the desktop
wallpaper

Fix seems to be working as intended. I did not notice any regressions.

[Bug 2070326] Re: Unable to Disable ChaCha20-Poly1305 Encryption to Mitigate Terrapin SSH Attack

2024-06-24 Thread Sam King
It sounds like you're encountering difficulties in disabling the
ChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption cipher to mitigate the Terrapin SSH attack.
Your approach to modify the SSH configuration files and restart the SSH
daemon seems correct. Here are a few additional steps and considerations
based on your report:

Steps to Reproduce:

Edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/anti-terrapin-attack.conf to include Ciphers
-.
Edit /etc/ssh/ssh_config.d/anti-terrapin-attack.conf similarly.
Restart the SSH daemon using systemctl restart sshd.
Check the available ciphers using ssh -Q cipher.
Expected Behavior:
The ChaCha20-Poly1305 cipher should be disabled and should not appear in the
list of available ciphers after the configuration changes and SSH daemon
restart.

Actual Behavior:
Despite making the changes and restarting SSH, the ChaCha20-Poly1305 cipher
continues to be listed among the available ciphers.

Additional Information:

Could you please provide the operating system version and SSH version you are
using?
It would also be helpful to see the output of ssh -Q cipher before and after
making the configuration changes.
Any relevant logs or error messages from /var/log/auth.log or SSH logs might
provide clues.
Resolution Attempted:
You've already tried editing the SSH configuration files and restarting the SSH
daemon, which is the correct approach.

Impact:
The persistence of the ChaCha20-Poly1305 cipher poses a security risk, leaving
the system vulnerable to the Terrapin SSH attack.

Next Steps:

Investigate if there are additional steps or configuration parameters needed to
effectively disable the cipher.
Consider consulting SSH documentation or community forums for insights into
similar issues reported by others.
If you have any updates or further details, please share them. We're here to
help troubleshoot and find a resolution.

Best regards,

[Bug 2070326] [NEW] Unable to Disable ChaCha20-Poly1305 Encryption to Mitigate Terrapin SSH Attack

2024-06-24 Thread Sam King
Public bug reported:

I've tried the following commands to disable the below cipher but it
still showing up. Am i missing something here

echo 'Ciphers -chacha20-poly1...@openssh.com' >
/etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/anti-terrapin-attack.conf
echo 'Ciphers -chacha20-poly1...@openssh.com' >
/etc/ssh/ssh_config.d/anti-terrapin-attack.conf

 systemctl restart sshd
The user Rajandran has reported attempting to disable the ChaCha20-Poly1305
encryption cipher to mitigate the Terrapin SSH attack using the following
commands:

bash
Copy code
echo 'Ciphers -' >
/etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/anti-terrapin-attack.conf
echo 'Ciphers -' >
/etc/ssh/ssh_config.d/anti-terrapin-attack.conf
systemctl restart sshd
However, despite these steps, the cipher is still appearing as available.

Steps to Reproduce:

Edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/anti-terrapin-attack.conf to include Ciphers
-.
Edit /etc/ssh/ssh_config.d/anti-terrapin-attack.conf similarly.
Restart the SSH daemon using systemctl restart sshd.
Check the available ciphers using ssh -Q cipher.
Expected Behavior:
The ChaCha20-Poly1305 cipher should be disabled and not listed among the
available ciphers after making the above configuration changes and restarting
SSH.

Actual Behavior:
Despite the configuration changes and SSH daemon restart, the ChaCha20-Poly1305
cipher continues to appear in the list of available ciphers.

Additional Information:

Operating System: [Insert OS version]
SSH Version: [Insert SSH version]
Output of ssh -Q cipher before and after attempted configuration changes.
Any relevant logs or error messages from /var/log/auth.log or SSH logs.
Resolution Attempted:

Editing sshd_config and ssh_config files as described.
Restarting SSH daemon.
Impact:
The continued availability of the ChaCha20-Poly1305 cipher leaves the system
vulnerable to the Terrapin SSH attack, impacting security.

Next Steps:

Investigate if there are additional configuration changes required or if a
different approach is needed to effectively disable the cipher.
Consult SSH documentation or community forums for insights or similar reported
issues.

Thanks. The same steps (grub-install followed by update-grub) also
eliminated the spurious message that I was getting.

2024-05-27 Thread Sam Gweon
I just upgraded my xubuntu box to 21.04 as well with a very similar
problem. In my case the message is "error: sparse file not allowed" and
a second later "Press any key to continue...". With no key stroke, it
will time out and continue after a few seconds.

[Bug 2065708] Re: Add Picture button in does not allow you to select wallpaper

2024-05-17 Thread Sam Lane
** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
+ * When trying to select a custom wallpaper to add to the Backgrounds page of
Budgie Control Center, the "Add Picture" button will open a dialog to select an
image file. However, there will be no thumbnail of the image displayed in this
dialog, the "Open" button will remain insensitive, and double-clicking the file
name will have no effect. The only option is to cancel out of the dialog. This
prevents the user from adding a custom wallpaper. This is due to AppArmor
changes preventing certain apps doing deemed security related issues in
userspace. In this case libgnome-desktop is calling bwrap which is the deemed
culprit.
+
+ * The upload addresses this issue by using GdkPixbuf to create the thumbnail
image, instead of gnome-desktop thumbnail creator.
+
+ [ Test Plan ]
+
+ To reproduce:
+
+ * On Ubuntu Budgie 24.04/24.10
+ * Open Budgie Control Center
+ * Navigate to the Background panel
+ * Select the "Add Picture" option
+ * Select an image file
+ * The thumbnail is not updated to show the currently selected image
+ * The "Open" button remains inactive, and the only option is to cancel the
dialog
+
+ * After this, the proposed fix can be applied.
+ * Open Budgie Control Center and repeat the above
+ * When a valid image is selected, the thumbnail is now properly shown and
the "Open" button is enabled.
+ * Open the selected image. The image is now properly added to Budgie Control
Center and can selected as a background
+
+ [ Where problems could occur ]
+
+ * It is possible that gnome-desktop thumbnail creator provided additional
functionality or handled a wider range of images than GdkPixbuf.
+ * Mitigating factors are that this is very specific to the Budgie desktop,
and it only directly impacts users who set wallpapers. It improves
functionality where it is currently not working.

[Bug 2062082] Re: 24.04 Wayland vs Nautilus performance problem

2024-04-18 Thread Sam Bee
1. I have deleted the card0 file and restarted my machine. I still
experience the same slowdown using wayland, but not when logging in with
x11. The effects are still evident when opening a folder with nautilus,
when navigating the system settings, and when choosing a download
location for a file in Chrome, for example.

2. I include the journal.txt file you requested

3. Neither gnome-shell nor any other process has been observed to use
higher than 12% cpu while experiencing the issue

4. The information about my system drivers was obtained by going to the
system Settings app, then System > About > System Details > Copy. The
nvidia-utils-545 driver had to be installed when I reinstalled ubuntu
and upgraded to 24.04 beta recently, to make the graphics work properly.
I don't know what the zink Vulkan thing is - is that the name of the
firmware for my graphics card?

[Bug 2062082] [NEW] 24.04 Wayland vs Nautilus performance problem

2024-04-17 Thread Sam Bee
Public bug reported:

Apologies if I have misfiled this bug - this is a report of an issue
affecting Wayland in Ubuntu 24.04 beta.

Using 24.04 beta logging in with Wayland. Nautilus has very significant
performance issues. Doesn't happen when logging in with Xorg instead of
Wayland.

Opening Nautilus windows - including normal windows navigation, and the
file download location dialogue in things like Chrome - extremely slow.
Takes approx. 10 seconds to process user double clicking to open folder.
Attempting to drag folder across screen usually doesn't work, or takes a
very long time.

Not very skilled at debugging, but programmes like Gimp, which has its
own built-in folder explorer for choosing a location to save an image,
do not have this problem. Ubuntu 24.04 with X does not have this
problem. No performance issues have been noticed with folder navigation,
stat'ing files etc. over the command line. It is only nautilus and
Wayland that give me this issue, so I suspect it is not an issue with my
SSD.

The following output was observed when starting nautilus over the
command line:

/home/me/ $ nautilus .
** Message: 23:43:50.560: Connecting to org.freedesktop.Tracker3.Miner.Files
libEGL warning: egl: failed to create dri2 screen

After approx. 10 seconds, the folder opened on screen. I double clicked on a
sub directory, and it took about 9 seconds to open.

I have attempted to show that this is not an issue with my SSD here:

/home/me/ $ date; cd workspace/; touch foo.txt; ls foo*; cd ../; date;
Wed Apr 17 11:58:16 PM BST 2024
foo.txt
Wed Apr 17 11:58:16 PM BST 2024

As you can see, no unusual slowdown was observed.

Obtaining the following setting for my bug report, I note that the
'Settings' GUI utility is among the areas affect by my very significant
system slowdown. I have copied some details about my system including
its graphics card in case that helps.

[Bug 2048808] Re: (don't) MIR aiohttp

2024-04-06 Thread Sam Bull
I'm an aiohttp maintainer, so let me know if there's any questions or
things we can help with.

Just to clarify a couple of points though:
 - python3-typing-extensions is not needed on Python 3.11+
 - python3-async-timeout is not needed on Python 3.12+ (and I suspect we'll
deprecate the library itself too).

So, if you're only concerned about more recent Ubuntu releases, they could be
skipped.
aiohttp 3.10 however, will have 1 new dependency aiohappyeyeballs (though this
will hopefully be temporary as we'd hope for the code to be upstreamed to
Python later).

All of the dependencies are fairly small though and have never had any
security issues I'm aware of.

[Bug 2055430] Re: curses input box with mouse-support enters test 588 589 whenever terminal window focus changes

2024-02-29 Thread Sam Liddicott
The fix for my application is to add:

$cui->set_binding( sub { }, "588" );
$cui->set_binding( sub { }, "589" );

I provide this as a workaround.

it suggests that 588 and 589 are to new KEY_* values that are perhaps
merely not-handled but now-should-be in libcurses-ui-perl engine.

I'm reporting this against ubuntu 23.10 package libcurses-ui-perl

[Bug 2055430] [NEW] curses input box with mouse-support enters test 588 589 whenever terminal window focus changes

2024-02-29 Thread Sam Liddicott
Public bug reported:

In gnome terminal shell run: /usr/share/doc/libcurses-ui-
perl/examples/color_editor

The text: 588
will be immediately entered into the document

If you switch focus to another application then the text: 589
will be entered into the document

Every time you switch back to the gnome-terminal "588" will be entered
and switching back will enter "589"

If you save the document, these will be part of the document proving
that it isn't text that escaped, e.g. via stderr

If (from another terminal) I disable focus reporting
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANSI_escape_code#CSIsection)

CSI ? 1004 h
  Enable reporting focus.
Reports whenever terminal emulator enters or exits
focus as ESC [I and ESC [O, respectively.

CSI ? 1004 l
 Disable reporting focus.

Like this:

$ ps -fade | grep examples/color_editor
user 361460 283761 0 14:29 pts/300:00:00 /usr/bin/perl -w
/usr/share/doc/libcurses-ui-perl/examples/color_editor
$ printf '\x1b[?1004l' > /dev/pts/3

then it stops misbehaving.

Perhaps the bug is really in libcurses-perl or even libncurses6

[Bug 1976563] [NEW] All text and images in Gnome Shell are corrupted

2022-06-01 Thread Sam Magura
Public bug reported:

See attached screenshot.

The corrupted text and images are only appearing in the Ubuntu desktop
environment (like the login screen, dock, and the bar at top of the
screen). Applications like Nautilus, the Terminal app, and Chrome are
not affected.

Maybe an Nvidia issue?

I'm going to restart my PC which will probably fix the issue. I'll edit
this if the issue persists after the restart.

Edit: To anyone investigating this issue, I recommend looking at some of
the other issues I've reported recently. It seems like they could all be
connected somehow, with Nvidia as the common thread.

** Description changed:

  See attached screenshot.

The corrupted text and images are only appearing in the Ubuntu desktop
environment (like the login screen, dock, and the bar at top of the
screen). Applications like Nautilus, the Terminal app, and Chrome are
  not affected.

  Maybe an Nvidia issue?

I'm going to restart my PC which will probably fix the issue. I'll edit
this if the issue persists after the restart.

+ Edit: To anyone investigating this issue, I recommend looking at some of
+ the other issues I've reported recently. It seems like they could all be

[Bug 1972726] Re: Update mutter to 42.1

2022-05-27 Thread Sam Lane
Also using Ubuntu Budgie 22.04

I have also been testing this on two separate laptops - both are
Thinkpad T560, one with Intel, one with Nvidia graphics. Ran similar
tests to Mauro with no issues found.

2022-05-26 Thread Sam Magura
Here's the prevboot.txt file you requested. Line 20160, timestamp May 26
19:02:39, is when I pressed the power button to resume from suspend.

I followed the steps from here
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#Missing_a_crash_report_or_having_a_.crash_attachment),
but none of the crashes appear to be related to this issue. Here's a
screenshot: https://ibb.co/m6zxhhx. Notice the latest crash is from May
21 (in my time zone), so 5 days ago.

[Bug 1975650] Re: Display stuck in low resolution

2022-05-24 Thread Sam Magura
** Description changed:

I often have to forcibly power down my PC because of this bug:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1970808. Well, the
most recent time I did that, when the computer restarted, the resolution
is stuck on 1024x768 even though I am on a 1920x1080 monitor. I
restarted my PC again and it is still stuck on the low resolution.

This Ask Ubuntu answer (https://askubuntu.com/a/1167437/1589552) did
allow me to force my resolution to 1920x1080, but a few things still
  seemed off:

  - The display settings page in the Gnome settings app still showed my display
as "unknown display" and did not have any options for changing the resolution.
  - A WebGL-based application I use for work was very slow compared to normal.

I reverted the change to my Grub config and now I'm back to 1024x768.

I have an Nvidia GTX 1060 connected to a 1920x1080 monitor via HDMI. Let
me know of any other information I can provide that would be helpful.
Also let me know if there is a workaround other than reinstalling the
  OS.

+ Edit: I have a Windows dual boot on this PC, with Windows installed on a
+ separate SSD. I booted into Windows and everything seems completely
+ fine. This provides further evidence that this is a software issue, not
+ a hardware one.

[Bug 1970808] [NEW] Stuck on "Click or press any key" screen after resuming from suspend

2022-04-28 Thread Sam Magura
Public bug reported:

After suspending my PC, sometimes when I resume, I get stuck on the lock
screen which shows the current time and says "Click or press any key".
No matter which mouse button or key I press, the screen is frozen. The
mouse cursor is displayed but does not move.

It seems to occur more frequently when my computer has been suspended
for at least several hours. I would say this issue occurs about 50% of
the time (very roughly speaking).

Things I have tried which did not work:

- Unplugging and re-plugging in my mouse
- Turning my keyboard off and on again
- Ctrl+Alt+F2 through F6, in an attempt to get access to a TTY

This is on a fresh install of 22.04.

[Bug 1970168] [NEW] File-save prompt is extremely buggy, potentially unusable

2022-04-25 Thread sam youwill
Public bug reported:

File-save prompt/window keeps growing after every save and won't resize
once fullscreen until I change the scaling factor and change it back so
it becomes small. Sometimes it won't let me save or exit the prompt at

[Bug 1967976] Re: Impress Video plays once and second time no video but sound

2022-04-14 Thread Sam Colegrove
I have just been updated to LibreOffice version 7.3.3.1 and this problem
still exists. I am starting to wonder if LibreOffice developers test
LibreOffice Impress with more than one video, particularly on Kubuntu..

[Bug 1967976] [NEW] Impress Video plays once and second time no video but sound

2022-04-05 Thread Sam Colegrove
Public bug reported:

LibreOffice Impress version 7.3.2.2, when I do a presentation with
slides and mp4 videos, it plays the first video correctly once and
thereafter on any video, there is only sound and no image displayed!

I am on Kubuntu 22.04 and this problem has existed since Version
7.2.5.2. I have two Laptops with LibreOffice and one has Version
7.2.5.2 locked in as this is my main Laptop for presentations and this
version works perfectly with no problem. My other Laptop is my
sacrificial Laptop which has version 7.3.2.2.

In the attached video I used Kazam to record both monitors. The
presentation screen is the right half.

[Bug 1965651] [NEW] ubiquity crash stops the installation of kubuntu 22.04

2022-03-19 Thread Sam Colegrove
Public bug reported:

I created a boot-able USB using Kubuntu 21.10 and the package startup
disk creator. I have tried different downloaded iso's for kubuntu 22.04
with the same result of ubiquity crashing before an installation can
start.

I went as far as zeroing the USB before making it bootable for kubuntu
22.04. That USB gave he same result of ubiquity crashing.

I did find a February iso and that went through to the installation step
without crashing. However because of the large number of updates the
system was not usable.

The crash text that I have is as follows:

[Bug 1881287] Re: crash creating a new package

2022-03-11 Thread Sam Varshavchik
It would be useful if someone were to post the exact steps to work
around this bug, so that someone who is trying to learn how to create
packages and is following the published Ubuntu packaging guide
documentation can, well, follow it.

As noted in bug 1897385, someone who's trying to learn how to create
Ubuntu packages is not going to have any idea how to manually update to
3.1.0 where this is fixed, since it's not been published for 20.

[Bug 1956047] Re: Dist Upgrade fails because it can't get Kubuntu-desktop

2022-01-14 Thread Sam Shiell
Hi,

I had removed the entries in my sources list as the 'apt update' was
failing on every entry because "there is no release candidate".
Presumably because support for that version had been removed.

So, adding them back in won't fix the issue.

Having said that I did successfully do the upgrade by initiating it from the
terminal prompt with
'Do dist-upgrade'

[Bug 1957120] Re: git ppa build failing on arm

Yes, that is the case.

To retest, I launched a brand new instance in AWS. bionic, arm.

Tried to install the ppa and git again. A similar error appeared:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 git : Depends: git-man (> 1:2.33.1) but 1:2.17.1-1ubuntu0.9 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Then, ran apport-collect.

Not sure if it worked because it said "ignoring..". Here's the output.

[Bug 25830]

2022-01-06 Thread Z-sam-i
Encountered this bug today trying to get a plaintext format (with the
mime type `application/`) to display as plaintext in the
browser rather than Open With > Firefox (and opening a new window.)

Is there still no workaround for enabling this type of functionality,
even by modifying config files in the profile? I tried messing around
with `handlers.json` (the file that holds the mime type preferences set
in `about:preferences` under the "Files and Applications" header) but
had no luck.

Some content types in `about:preferences` permit users to select "Open
in Firefox" while others don't. Where is the safelist of permitted
content types for this behavior? Could a simple solution to this bug be
to add an `about:config` flag that would allow power users to select
"Open in Firefox" for any content type?

[Bug 1955551] [NEW] Software updater crashes when you deselect some some checkboxes from a list of software to update

2021-12-22 Thread Sam H
Public bug reported:

When presented with list of software (components) to be updated I need
to deselect some of them by clicking on check boxes and deselecting
them. This normally causes the app to be unresponsive (can not click on
"Install Now" button) and then crashes. It then present an error report
which I used at least 100 times reporting this crash.

[Bug 1847275] Re: stunnel4: "INTERNAL ERROR: Bad magic at ssl.c, line 117" - DoS vulnerability

2021-12-18 Thread Sam Stenvall
Ran into the same problem. The service never recovers after this error,
because the package is not shipped with a systemd unit, but with an old
/etc/init.d/stunnel4 script.

I ended up uninstalling the Ubuntu version, compling 5.60 (latest at the
time) from source and then running it with a makeshift systemd service
(available at
https://gist.github.com/Jalle19/60532513bbcec2fa630a9d8b576d91e3).

Re: [Bug 1955009] Re: Freeradius 3.0.21+dfsg-3build1 fails test of moonshot-gss-eap

> "Christian" == Christian Ehrhardt  <1955...@bugs.launchpad.net>
writes:

Christian> Reproducible in local autopkgtest

Let me make sure I'm understanding.
You are saying that prior to penssl 3, the test works, but with
openssl3, the test fails?

What is the ssl version in the successful tests?
For example from the failing test we have:
OpenSSL: TX ver=0x303 content_type=22 (handshake/client hello)

What's the txver from that message in the successful test?
Unfortunately, EAP-TTLS is a bit sensitive to the TLS protocol version
in use for some annoying standardization reasons.

It looks like things are failing on the server side.
The autopkgtest produces the freeradius log (which is admittedly huge)
as a test artifact.
Could I get a pointer to a failing freeradius log?

I'm also going to bring this bug to the attention of Moonshot upstream.

[Bug 1947697] Re: no longer works after upgrade to 21.10 (raspberry pi 4)

2021-11-29 Thread Sam Lane
Apparently the zram module (among others) is no longer there by default
on 21.10. It can be installed through the linux-modules-extra-raspi

From the release notes:
Various kernel modules have been moved from the linux-modules-raspi package in
order to reduce the initramfs size. This results in several applications (most
notably Docker, bug 1947601 18) failing due to missing kernel modules. To work
around this:
sudo apt install linux-modules-extra-raspi

Hopefully this helps.

[Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics

The permanent fix described by
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-

sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel*
sudo reboot

Note the poster of this fix has a follow up comment about the broader video
driver removal also causing issues with Chrome, but I use Firefox so I havent
seen any other issues removing just the intel driver.

[Bug 1943840] Re: [FFe] Update the ubuntu-desktop-minimal seed to use the firefox snap

2021-10-15 Thread Sam Van den Eynde
Olivier, I am not sure what is the reasoning here.

That you obviously want to land this in a non-LTS version has nothing to
do with the fact the base product is not ready and that the change was
announced unacceptably late here. The Flutter-based installer is a nice
example. You can obviously develop something for years ánd still land it
in a non-LTS.

Locking out users is not just about "the deb still being available".
Some people will have the snap, others the deb, and others both. If they
have both I have no idea which one is run when they click the FF icon.
The upgrade scenario you mention in comment #7 does not seem to be the
real world case either.

We just got teleported back in time, where the only way for our helpdesk
to know what happens when a user calls the helpdesk, is to open a
terminal and run "apt-get" and "ps aux". This is a support hell,
especially at scale. Because of a non-critical move to another package
format.

And so far no guarantees on the LTS either.

[Bug 1943840] Re: [FFe] Update the ubuntu-desktop-minimal seed to use the firefox snap

2021-10-01 Thread Sam Van den Eynde
Honestly, to announce this one month before release without feature
parity, is baffling.

As it looks this puts us in a position where we probably have to stop
supporting Ubuntu after more than a decade, as the available browsers
can't work with our Belgian Identity Card.

And this because of a packaging format. It is honestly mind-boggling.

[Bug 1942648] [NEW] restart button remains visible in the advanced partitioner after the bitlocker page is shown

Public bug reported:

alongside Windows Boot Manager", a page is shown instructing us to turn

If we now go back and pick "Something else", the advanced partitioning

[Bug 1929244] [NEW] redis configuration enable include fragments by default

2021-05-21 Thread Sam Bortman
Public bug reported:

Hello,

lsb_release:
Description:Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS
Release:18.04
(but the issue is observed on newer releases too.)

package:
5:4.0.9-1ubuntu0.2 500

Summary:
Expected behaviour: configuration fragments included by default
Current behavior: configuration fragments aren't included by default

Longer form:
Currently the redis.conf configuration file supports the "include" keyword.
However, by default, nothing is included. Problems can pop up when local
configuration needs to be maintained between upgrades. The upgrade mechanism
will prompt for manual intervention with the configuration file, if any changes
were made to it. Depending on the amount of customization done therein, this
could cause a time-consuming and error-prone situation of having to merge/patch
things up.

Other packages, such as Apache and MySQL (for instance, amongst many
others), have addressed this by providing a "conf.d"-style directory and
having "include conf.d/*" type of statement in the default configuration
file that's maintained by the package maintainer. This is effectively
the standard approach seen nowadays in Linux.

The benefit is obvious: one can simply drop their local configuration
file into the provided conf.d directory and upgrade away with far fewer
worries.

In summary, please consider affecting the following two (or three) changes to
the redis package:
1) add an empty /etc/redis/conf.d directory to the package

2) add the statement "include /etc/reds/conf.d/*" to the bottom of the
official /etc/redis.conf file to serve as an override of all default
settings

3) it's not clear to me whether wildcard can actually currently be
specified in the include statement. If they currently cannot be
specified, please patch the code to glob using the pattern specified in
the include, instead of targeting an individual file.

Thank you!

[Bug 1927100] [NEW] Slow file dialogs, open and save

2021-05-04 Thread sam tygier
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu Mate 20.04.

Sometime the Open and Save dialogs in GTK applications will over 20
seconds to display.

I found https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gvfs/-/issues/485 , which
suggested this due to gvfsd-trash, and running `killall gvfsd-trash`
which does temporary solve the problem.

The issue is apparently fixed in gvfs 1.46.2

[Bug 1926487] [NEW] 3D graphics artifact / glitch

2021-04-28 Thread Sam Turner
Public bug reported:

The recent 5.8.0-49 update and also the 5.8.0-50 show a 3d graphics
glitch. The problem was not present in 5.8.0-48. It seems like faces
that are displayed relatively small onscreen suffer from not being
displayed properly/invisible. This happens in a variety of apps that use
3D graphics. I have tested in glxgears and the issue is also present.
See the attached animated gif.

[Bug 1922073] [NEW] partition info not visible during "Install Alongside" option

2021-03-31 Thread Sam Lane
Public bug reported:

When installing 21.04 beta, using the Install Alongside option brings
you to a window where you can drag a slider to select partition sizes.

during the installer resize window

white background)

[Bug 1919070] Re: Unstable and frequent crashes kernel 5.4.0-66-generic on ASUS E201NAS (5.4.0-65-generic is good)

2021-03-15 Thread Sam Vargas
Hi Guilherme,

The laptop is pretty underpowered and occasionally freezes but only for
a split second but when running on linux-5.4.0-66-generic freezes are
frequent and long. Zoom calls crash the system and require a hard reset
- on <= linux-5.4.0.65 zoom calls works perfectly. It also needs a hard
reset when plugging in HMDI amongst other seemingly unrelated things. I
see no on screen errors. I'll enabled kdump and post the logs when I
can.
