Also affects Lenovo W500 running Lucid (10.04). Following your suggestions I found and removed /etc/shadow.lock and /etc/passwd.lock - the problem is resolved. I can now install software correctly. Thank you very much for your help. I remember some error reported at the end of the upgrade process about an incomplete upgrade and that certain packages might not work, but not from a guest session crash at that time. [Bug 307349] Re: Bluetooth mouse stops working following normal shutdown
Hello, I am now trying to use the same Microsoft mouse under the latest supported release of Ubuntu (9.10) on the same Lenovo laptop. I am still unable to make the mouse work properly with this machine. In fact, I can no longer get the machine to recognize the mouse at all, apparently. If I click on the Bluetooth icon in the top right of the screen, I get a menu which shows 'Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000' under 'Devices'. This is presumably a left-over from my earlier attempts to get it to work (with 8.10). Choosing 'Connect' with the mouse nearby and active does nothing. If I choose 'Se tup new device...' I can get to the 'Device search' window which shows 'Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse' on the first line (even though the mouse is now turned off!) and a spinning icon next to 'Searching for devices...' which just seems to stay there forever. I can however highlight the mouse line ('Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse') and then the forward button becomes active. Clicking that immediately takes me to a new window which says 'Device Setup Failed' with a message 'Setting up 'Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000' failed. From there the only options are 'Restart setup' (which does the same bs all over again) and Close. So it appears to still 'know about' a mouse that is switched off, it can't connect to it when it is switched on, and it can't see it when it is in 'visible' mode. In short it is impossible to use this mouse with this machine under Ubuntu 9.10. -- Bluetooth mouse stops working following normal shutdown https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/307349 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 448308] [NEW] Update Manager eventually fails with error message after asking for password to allow system changes
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager Following an update from Jaunty to Karmic Beta, attempting to use the Update Manager tool to add the latest software updates results in failure. I would like to help more but I don't know how to (safely). Is there a straightforward guide to the processes, issues and pitfalls that may be encountered? For example, how and when should I switch to the 'testing' release of Ubuntu; what is a PPA and how do I use it? What 'tips and tricks' should we be aware of? In this case, removing the tracker package only involves a few other packages that all have 'tracker' in the name, so they are highly unlikely to cause any upset. On the other hand, if you tried to remove some package and discovered it wanted to take a dozen packages with it, and especially if many are general-use lib* packages, I'd say again, best leave it to the experts ;) As for how to do this: the link Chris gave to the PPA contains full instructions, but what is maybe not clear is that you have to click on that odd hexadecimal key number and follow the links to get to his public key, then save that to a text file and install it in the package manager according to the instructions. [Bug 112684] Re: F-Spot deletes temporary image files too early when sending mails
This bug is still in issue in Ubuntu 8.10 (Ibex) and with F-Spot (f-spot 0.5.0.3). I am not opening another bug report as it is basically the same issue as reported in this one. The temporary folder F-Spot creates (in /tmp in my case) disappears automatically after a short while. When Thunderbird comes to look for it to send the mail, it fails as it no longer exists. This makes it practically impossible to send an image as email via Thunderbird using this F-Spot feature. Further, using the Configuration Editor 2.24.1 for gconf shows that there is no '/apps/f-spot/export/email/delete_timeout_seconds' key present by default. Configuration Editor shows '/apps/f-spot/export/email' contains only the keys 'auto_rotate' and 'size'. [Bug 312097] [NEW] Gnome Scan fails to find USB scanner with 'The scan backend returned the following error: Invalid argument'
Public bug reported: Attempting to use Gnome Scan (0.4.1-0ubuntu4) with a Canon CanoScan LIDE 25 USB scanner results in the following error after Gnome Scan goes through its 'Probing devices' phase. 'An error occured while accessing device ! The scan backend returned the following error: Invalid argument' The scanner is recognized by the Lenovo W500 laptop: $ scanimage -L device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname UVC Camera (17ef:4807) virtual device device `plustek:libusb:005:003' is a Canon CanoScan LiDE25 flatbed scanner $ Using scanimage directly appears to use the wrong device by default: $ scanimage scanimage: open of device v4l:/dev/video0 failed: Invalid argument $ Some sort of scan can be made manually (although I haven't properly adjusted settings etc.): $ scanimage -d plustek:libusb:005:003 --format=tiff test.tiff This controls the scanner and produces a scanned .tiff image. I am using Ubuntu 8.10. I modified the file /etc/sane.d/plustek.conf to identify the scanner properly - see attached. [Bug 307349] [NEW] Bluetooth mouse tops working following normal shutdown
Public bug reported: I am using a Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 on a Lenovo W500 laptop under Ubuntu 8.10. The mouse worked fine after initial installation. However if the laptop is powered off and then restarted, the mouse no longer works (moving the mouse results in no cursor motion). The mouse is still reported under the System | Preferences | Bluetooth | Known devices window as a 'Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000' although it has a white letter 'i' in a blue circle next to the name. What this means I have no idea. The only way I have found to recover mouse operation (until the next shutdown of course) is to delete the device from the list (using the Trash can icon) and then perform a device setup ('Setup new device...') action again. Obviously this is painful to do after every restart of the computer. [Bug 307353] [NEW] Dialog 'Authentication required by wireless network' keeps appearing despite being given correct WPA/WPA2 Personal key
Public bug reported: I am trying to connect to a WPA-PSK AES encrypted network using a Lenovo W500 laptop running Ubuntu 8.10. The internal wireless card is an Intel WiFi Link 5300. Connection to the network has worked precisely once, and then after numerous previous failures. The key (passphrase) is correct and connection to the same wireless router from a different laptop running Windows XP works 100% of the time. Following the entry of the key into the 'Authentication...' dialog box - and the subsequent connection failure - selecting the 'Show password' checkbox shows a string of 64 letters and numbers, what seem to be a hex representation of something. This is a show-stopper because I don't use insecure wireless networks and so am forced to use a wired connection (which rather defeats the point of an expensive laptop).
