[Bug 1944581] Re: Session preference not respected; Wayland session started despite Xorg being selected

[Bug 1944581] Re: Session preference not respected; Wayland session started despite Xorg being selected
Hello, Thank you for your comments. The system log is included. The user is logged in. I have verified that Xorg was already selected on the login prompt, though I did not perform the explicit re-selecting that is required to actually register the preference. As a result, the Wayland session was started, despite Xorg showing as the preferred session. ** Attachment added: "journal.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1944581/+attachment/5527665/+files/journal.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1944581 Title: Session preference not respected; Wayland session started despite Xorg being selected To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1944581/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

** Description changed: Binary package hint: firefox-3.0 When opening a print preview in Firefox 3.03 and clicking on the scroll button, when auto scroll is enabled, the auto scroll icon appears, but not at the mouse position. To reproduce: Step 1: Start Firefox If auto scroll is not enabled, do so: Step 2: Go to Edit > Preferences Step 3: Go to the Advanced tab and select "use auto scroll" Now, press the middle mouse button to test auto scroll. The auto scroll icon should appear at the position of the mouse cursor. Step 4: Go to File > Print Preview and use the auto scroll function. [Bug 1944581] [NEW] Session preference not respected; Wayland session started despite Xorg being selected
Public bug reported: Session preference, in this case, is ignored in two scenarios: * Cold boot, first log in: Even when Xorg session is picked through the cog menu in the bottom right, Wayland session is started. Only when explicitly re-selecting Xorg from this session picker, despite being selected and displaying as selected already, the Xorg session is registered as the preferred one. * Gnome session crash ("Oh no! Something has gone wrong" error). After restoring session, Wayland starts by default, despite initially choosing Xorg session. @61, yes. I had tried it and it works. It also has mSBC support - https://github.com/Arkq/bluez-alsa/issues/29, but the author himself admits that mSBC support is buggy and is not being developed. [Bug 1838151] Re: Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. Missing wide band speech support (Bluetooth A2DP codecs).
@63 - your headset likely doesn't support mSBC (16 KHz), only CVSD (8KHz) in HFP/HSP mode. If that is the case, any fix - using a USB soundcard as you did, or a software fix (which this page is tracking) isn't gonna help. If it does support mSBC, 1Mii B10, and Avantree Leaf, Creative BT-W3 should be able to give decent quality audio. The definition of 'decent' varies of course. Most people in this age and time wouldn't be happy with 8 KHz (else, this page wouldn't exist), but mSBC is decent enough for most people, at least for typical voice calls. You can check the sampling frequency used very easily using Audacity > Record a few seconds using the mic in question > Analyze > Plot Spectrum. Note that Audacity plots in log scale for freq by default. If the highest freq component is just below 4 KHz, it is using CVSD @ 8 KHz sampling, and your headset is the likely culprit. If the highest component is 8 KHz, it is using mSBC @ 16 KHz. If you think that is not good enough, your options are limited. You can use FastStream (FS) which is supported only by a limited number of headsets, as well as by dongles such as Leaf, 1Mii B10, Creative BT-W2. No OS afaik supports it, so you can't use the dongle. Many devices have buggy implementations of FS. AptX LL also supposedly has bidirectional audio support, but the voiceback part is not supported by any device that I know of. ** Bug watch added: github.com/Arkq/bluez-alsa/issues #29 https://github.com/Arkq/bluez-alsa/issues/29 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1838151 Title: Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. [Bug 1881494] Re: [amdgpu] suspend to ram (standby) crashes amdgpu (Ryzen-7 Vega - HP Envy x360)
Reading the initial bug report I see kolAflash said > nomodeset seems to be essential, but not sufficient. When I added nomodeset to /etc/default/grub ( GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" ) then I can boot without issues, but suspend does not work. To reiterate: * the TTY1 screen is not blank on boot * sleep works * suspend does not work - you get this bug Given this error in syslog: > kernel: [0.047848] You have booted with nomodeset. This means your GPU > drivers are DISABLED > kernel: [0.047849] Unless you actually understand what nomodeset does, > you should reboot without enabling it > [0.047849] Any video related functionality will be severely degraded, and > you may not even be able to suspend the system properly > [0.047849] Unless you actually understand what nomodeset does, you should > reboot without enabling it I tried a few things without nomodeset in grub options. In this case: * the default screen, TTY1, (CTRL-ALT-F1) is blank on boot (or has the HP logo only) * sleep works * suspend doesn't seem to work. If you leave the laptop in suspend mode for a long time it does not resume. The screen is black with just a white underscore on it. The last log lines in /var/log/syslog is systemd[1]: Reached target Sleep. systemd[1]: Starting Suspend... systemd-sleep[8263]: Suspending system... kernel: [ 9425.088936] PM: suspend entry (s2idle) As a workaround for the default screen being blank on boot, you can go to TTY2 (CTRL-ALT-F2), log in and run startx from the command prompt. Some tests: * This does not seem to be the same issue as https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=204241 because the following command works just fine. for i in $(seq 30); do sudo rtcwake -m mem -s 5; sleep 15; done * I've tried adding GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1080 to /etc/default/grub but that doesn't seem to solve the issue with the screen on TTY1 being blank on boot. The commands pm-hibernate and pm-suspend give the errors in /var/log/syslog > [ 2566.154192] Lockdown: grep: hibernation is restricted; see man > kernel_lockdown.7 and nothing happens The command pm-powersave gives the same "hibernation is restricted" error in /var/log/syslog but the system goes blank and the is unresponsive. ** Bug watch added: Linux Kernel Bug Tracker #204241 https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=204241 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1881494 Title: [amdgpu] suspend to ram (standby) crashes amdgpu (Ryzen-7 Vega - HP Envy x360) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1881494/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1888070] Re: latest update freezes system on boot
Neither 111 nor 109 kernel nor any older would work with a full boot into system. So I was advised to get rid of the amdgpu drivers and make sure the open source AMD drivers are installed. https://amdgpu-install.readthedocs.io/en/latest/install-installing.html #uninstalling-the-amdgpu-graphics-stack amdgpu-uninstall https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-the-latest-amd-radeon-drivers-on- ubuntu-18-04-bionic-beaver-linux sudo add-apt-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers sudo apt-get update sudo apt update && sudo apt -y upgrade Additionally I installed https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack though I am not sure if I had to also use that. Possibly simply uninstalling the amdgpu drivers that are not compatible with the latest kernel and switching to the open source Mesa release drivers would also have been an option, though this is speculation. Regardless with the open source AMD drivers I do not have any AER issues (could also not get rid of those with pcie="noaer") and can enjoy a full boot into the system with latest kernel and all updates. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1888070 Title: latest update freezes system on boot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-meta/+bug/1888070/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@seb128 Sebastien, are you referring to this page? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell The specific issue is that the "dock" is exposed and it doesn't feel fullscreen. System info: Intel Integrated Graphics 530 (NO GPU, just processor) I've tried default 19.10 input device modesetting as well as specifying with an intel-20 xorg config to use Device driver "intel" (rather than modesetting) Sebastien this is what I'm trying to launch, it uses OpenGL and is coded in C. It always worked fine launching in fullscreen. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1849787 Title: The dock is shown in front of full screen windows since 19.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/dash-to-dock/+bug/1849787/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1849787] Re: The dock is shown in front of full screen windows since 19.10
What do I need to do to have this looked at more closely? I can send a screenshot of the game in question. The input lag is so absurdly high with 19.10 and this bug among other things makes 19.10 feel like a huge regression for me. I am using 19.04 now and everything runs faster and I don't get this bug where the dock is infront of the the fullscreen application. I tried wayland, with modesetting, without modesetting - nothing works.
[Bug 1849787] Re: The dock is shown in front of full screen windows since 19.10
Also just want to note: it feels like since the Dock is showing in fullscreen (it isn't really fullscreen). There is a huge amount of CPU usage + input lag. Switching back to 19.04 was like night and day. OpenGL 64-bit game runs fast and good on old release. On new one- 19.10 the dock is not possible to hide and it doesn't feel like true fullscreen (huge input lag with 144 Hz monitor). (Apologies if this is in the wrong place to report bugs pertaining to dock showing in full in other applications - OpenGL games etc), it's my first bug report.
[Bug 1849787] Re: The dock is shown in front of full screen windows since 19.10
I have the same issue. It forced me to revert back to 19.04 from latest ver. of 19.10. It was already a problem since week prior to release of 19.10 (when I first tried). 19.10 latest ver on Intel Graphics 530. [Bug 938751] Re: Images are washed out or colors are skewed in some apps
EOG also applies fullscreen profiles to image! Notice most of preinstalled color profiles in Settings->Devices->Color does not support whole screen correction (they are marked with bulb icon). So this is normal application behavior to apply system-wide color profile to image. But when fullscreen profile selected, it used firstly in EOG for certain image and secondly by the system for final correction. In my case screen has noticeable bluish cast, so ICC does significant color shift to compensate it. But when applied twice, it makes images yellowish in EOG. [Bug 1776563] Re: Acer Aspire A315 IOAPIC failure on Ubuntu 18.04, kernel hangs, can't load, kernel freeze (AMD Ryzen 5/Radeon/Raven) / AMDGPU Hybrid crash
I have "not-G" A315 with 2200u and can boot with acpi=noirq. With lots of warnings, but works, no slowdown. Thought this option does same with irqs as acpi=off or pci=noacpi (using MPTable instead of ACPI table). I'm still on factory 1.03 BIOS, and with "noapic" parameter everything looks OK on Ubuntu 18.10. Also have idle=halt param to avoid "random soft lockup bug" https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196683 I suspect, updating BIOS may bring more problems. So even new AGESA (which may fix lockup bug) is no worth reason for me to update. ** Bug watch added: Linux Kernel Bug Tracker #196683 https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196683 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1776563 Title: Acer Aspire A315 IOAPIC failure on Ubuntu 18.04, kernel hangs, can't load, kernel freeze (AMD Ryzen 5/Radeon/Raven) / AMDGPU Hybrid crash To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/amd/+bug/1776563/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1812057] Re: Upgrade Lost Firefox ESR
Obviously this has nothing to do with PPAs. This has to do with the system wiping out all the installed programs and forcing manual re- installations. In this specific case, Ubuntu also damaged the linkages between programs and their data. This is most bizarre because one would have thought that the upgrade process would do no such thing and the strong promotion to do the upgrade would imply to most people that their productivity would be protected. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1812057 Title: Upgrade Lost Firefox ESR To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1812057/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Olivier, I'm afraid that you appear to be laboring under a misunderstanding. Strange... Is there really almost the same laptops with Metapod_RR motherboard? Mine have 38-46C idle temp and 72C while gaming with AC plugged. With TLP Ubuntu reports for 5+ hours estimated battery runtime (idle, almost minimum brightness; 4h without TLP). Or 3 hours of FHD video in VLC. So real battery life is somewhere between. On Windows 10 I had similar results, but used it for few days. I have higher power consumption after suspend-resume. It raises from usual ~7 Watts to 10-11 while idle (Measured by PowerTop). I'm using TLP powersaving utility on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and Powertop as monitoring tool. Have not noticed any CPU frequency abnormalities. Also i've tried force set frequency limit by cpupower, but no result. I found info that dGPU may power up after suspend-resume and cause high battery drain, but my system does not contain dGPU (2200u + vega 3 iGPU) Still on factory 1.03 BIOS. Also have random system hangs every 5-10 hours of runtime. Two times while gaming, and ambient sounds continue playing, but image freezes and system became totally unresponsible. idle=nomwait did not help. Now I've changed amdgpu firmware files and waiting for result... If problem will repeat, I'll check RAM and update bios. What is minimum CPU frequency for mobile Ryzens? I can't set less than 1600MHz with cpupower, but sometimes it falls to 1200 or so. And none of methods (lscpu, cpupower frequency-info) shows turbo frequency capabilities - 2500 is maximum. But "cat /proc/cpuinfo" displays more than 3000MHz while running Mozilla Kraken benchmark. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1776563 Title: Acer Aspire A315 IOAPIC failure on Ubuntu 18.04, kernel hangs, can't load, kernel freeze (AMD Ryzen 5/Radeon/Raven) / AMDGPU Hybrid crash To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/amd/+bug/1776563/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1774950] Re: Suspend fails in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 18.04 but works fine in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 17.10 (and on Kubuntu 18.04 using kernel 4.14.47)
@perryhelionsemail - I am really hesitant to removing the max_cstate boot flag: I had to set this in order to avoid random and total system freezes. And that bug seems to be anything but fixed: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109051 So, with due respect to curiosity – not gonna try that. ;) However, it seems I found a solution for now for my flickering graphics issues. I tried Gnome Shell (Ubuntu's default DE). There I did NOT encounter any flickering. But Gnome Shell isn't a Desktop Environment I would want to settle on – I'll save you my random rant about it. :) And that was not my solution. In trying to find a fix for my previously mentioned Cinnamon login-crash bug, I had upgraded Cinnamon to the latest stable version 3.8.3 via a PPA (the current version in Ubuntu's repo is 3.6.7). Today, I purged the PPA and downgraded Cinnamon to the older Ubuntu's repo version. As a result, the flickering issues with the patched kernel seem to be gone, so I'm mostly good for now, as far as I can see. :) To summarize: - The patched 4.15.0-24 kernel enables me to suspend-to-ram. - The patched 4.15.0-24 kernel brings a new issue for me: A minute-long wait before I get to the Ubuntu greeter and am able to login to a DE. This does not happen in 4.15.0-23. - The patched 4.15.0-24 in combination with latest Cinnamon 3.8.3 (via PPA) causes graphics flickering big time. This does not occur in 4.15.0-23, either. So, while indeed restoring suspend, the patch still seems to be missing something. @kaihengfeng - Is there any way I might help debugging or provide additional info? ** Bug watch added: Linux Kernel Bug Tracker #109051 https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109051 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1774950 Title: Suspend fails in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 18.04 but works fine in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 17.10 (and on Kubuntu 18.04 using kernel 4.14.47) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1774950/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@perryhelionsemail: Thank you for putting all this info together and for staying at it! :) Just to weigh in: I am affected, too, on an ACER Aspire V 11 Touch (V3 -111P-P06A), N3530 CPU, Intel onboard graphics, 8GB RAM (not original) and 480 GB SSD (not original), and having the boot flag intel_idle.max_cstate=1 activated. I just installed the kernel patch provided by @kaihengfeng. It seems to fix the suspend/resume issue for me, as well. Haven't tried hibernate, yet. However, two new issues became apparent for me right away: 1. Upon system start, after the Ubuntu loading screen (the purple-ish screen with the five dots below "Ubuntu"), the screen goes black with a blinking cursor on the top left, and later black altogether, and stays that way for quite some time, sometimes for minutes, until I finally get to the greeter and can login to my DE (Cinnamon 3.8). This does not happen with 4.15.0-23, pre-patch. While "waiting", I can log in to the TTYs, however. 2. I am also seeing a lot of graphics issues now, parts of the background and panel wildly flickering black; looks like some problem with transparencies of panels, desklets and notification popups. Just to be sure, I just checked back by booting back and forth between pre-patch kernel and patched kernel. In 4.15.0-23 I couldn't observe any such flickering thus far. As I just upgraded to 18.04 this last weekend, and instantly ran into another problem (default Ubuntu and Cinnamon counter-acting each other) which I managed to solve only recently, I don't really have much mileage with 18.04 so far. So, possibly, the above "new" issues are totally unrelated to the patch. But still, apparently, the issues don't occur without the patch. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1774950 Title: Suspend fails in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 18.04 but works fine in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 17.10 (and on Kubuntu 18.04 using kernel 4.14.47) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1774950/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
