[Bug 773482] Re: Compiz makes the system unstable in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty

2011-05-22 Thread Doug Vaughan
I believe I'm having a similar problem. When I attempt to change any
settings through Advanced Desktop Effects Settings version
0.9.4-0ubuntu2 (compizconfig-settings-manager).

I am a very light user of Ubuntu, so go easy on me. :)

Each time I try to tweak a setting I lose the default side bar menu and
the system menu that lives up there at the top of the monitor. Being
such a novice the only solution I could come up with was to reinstall
Ubuntu and not mess with Compiz. Is there a workaround solution if I
lose these item again? I'm not planning to mess with Advanced Desktop
Effects Settings any more until this issue is resolved, but I'm
concerned I may do something somewhere else that impacts Compiz and
screws me up again.

Thanks guys

[Bug 748739] Re: no config tool currently provided for Ubuntu Unity Plugin

2011-04-05 Thread Brian Vaughan
When I upgraded to Natty, I was impressed at how icons I'd previously
added to my GNOME panel, and two shortcuts to third-party applications
on my desktop, were automatically added to the launcher.

However, this means that there are several icons on the launcher for
applications I seldom use, and the launcher list is rather full. I'd
think the three buttons for LibreOffice applications would be better
replaced with a single button for the general LibreOffice launcher, at
least for me.

I quickly found out (by accident) that the launcher buttons can be moved
around, and it looks like it's easy enough to add and remove
applications from the launcher. However, from many past experiences with
munging GUI settings, I always look for a way to back up settings before
I mess with them, or at the very least, I look for some way to reset
everything to defaults. Looking for such a thing led me to this bug
report.

I've long felt that while users -- even experienced users -- don't need
or generally want to have all the obscure settings for an application
right up front, it's easy enough to hide the fiddly bits behind an
Advanced Settings button, and have a text configuration file, with
comments, that can be edited by experienced users, and can be edited
enterprise-wide by a sysadmin with a little shell scripting. It just
seems at odds with the general design philosophy of Linux to remove
configuration options entirely.

[Bug 602934]

2011-04-04 Thread Vaughan-audacityteam
Scanned the patch. Nice work with the function declaration macros, made it a
lot more readable. And your changes are well documented.

Why change several wxLogDebug() calls to wxLogMessage()? I would think that
type of info would only be clutter to most users, and relevant only to those of
us building Debug versions.

I see these changes are not backward compatible, but if Gale's okay with that
for users, I say commit this patch.

[Bug 602934]

2011-04-04 Thread Vaughan-audacityteam
(In reply to comment #91)

from Leland Lucius lel...@audacityteam.org 2011-04-01 00:48:46 EDT ---
 snip
Why change several wxLogDebug() calls to wxLogMessage()? I would think that
type of info would only be clutter to most users, and relevant only to those
 of
 us building Debug versions.

Did that because it was hiding what was going on when searching for the
libraries. I felt they would assist with debugging problems when users
complained about Audacity not finding the FFmpeg libraries. And since the
users get Release versions, the messages wouldn't be available.

Yes, obviously I know that. Wanted to raise the issue because they formerly
were wxLogMessage() and a few months ago I changed them to wxLogDebug() because
I thought it was just cruft, and FFmpeg had been unchanged for a while. Nobody
complained, so I thought that was justified.

I think the only reason to show them in release versions is if we are actually
still getting FFmpeg errors -- but as we're using a new FFmpeg, I think yes,
leave them in at least for this release.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the reason for the log. What information in there
does the user any good? Isn't it more for the folks that are assisting users
 with problems?

It's useful for debugging, too. :-)

And some wxLogDebug() calls are good to leave in, although probably many should
be commented out when the debugging is completed.

I see these changes are not backward compatible, but if Gale's okay with that
for users, I say commit this patch.

How far back do you want it to go?

I wasn't advocating for *any* backward compatibility, personally. Just wanted
to double check with Gale because I said commit the patch, but that question
had not been resolved.

[Bug 602934]

2011-04-04 Thread Vaughan-audacityteam
(In reply to comment #92)

from Gale Andrews g...@audacityteam.org 2011-04-01 14:17:13 BST ---
The only point about backwards-compatibility as I see it is to save people
coming from 1.3.6 and 1.3.7 (which had our earliest version of FFmpeg) having
to get the latest FFmpeg when they upgrade Audacity. Even without this patch
those 1.3.6/1.3.7 users would have to upgrade to the current FFmpeg available
at Buanzo's site, so we are not making things any worse for them. And if this
patch was in 1.3.13 or 1.3.14, users upgrading from 1.3.8+ would be able to
carry on with their older FFmpeg 0.5 without having to update to our FFmpeg
 0.6
when we release it, so it's better for them. But to answer the question, no
 the
1.3.6/1.3.7 FFmpeg (the October 2008 versions here):
 http://lrn.mooo.com/other/gsoc/ffmpegcity/ffmpeg/distributable/

I think those are not too much to ask of beta users, so I am -1 on backward
compatibility.

[Bug 712584] Re: Firefox-4.0: AppArmor errors on certain websites

2011-02-24 Thread Brian Vaughan
I was getting alerts, via apparmor-notify, almost identical to the ones
described here, although I am using Firefox 3.6.13, when I visited
various websites, although I didn't notice any missing graphics. That
may be because the graphics were web ads, which I am blocking via
Adblocker Plus. This is a recent change -- I only started getting such
alerts a few weeks ago.

I added to /etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.bin.firefox the following:
/dev/nvidactl rw,
/dev/nvidia0 rw,
/proc/interrupts r,

and that seems to have stopped the alerts. As in the original
description, I started with the first two, and only then got the
/proc/interrupts error, so I added it as well.

Re: [Bug 441835] Re: Clicking on floppy gives no device media found

2011-02-08 Thread Brian Vaughan
The issue is that floppy disks are no longer auto-mounted on the GNOME
desktop. Floppy disks can easily be mounted at the command line, so what's
lost is a convenience, and one that matters most to novice users.
Contemporary personal computers rarely have floppy drives installed; it has
been many years since floppy disk drives were a standard feature. It seems
to me that it is unlikely for someone who needs access to floppy disks to be
a novice computer user and unwilling to use a command line interface.

Given the resources available to Ubuntu developers, and the priorities of
the Ubuntu distribution, I think that it's reasonable for the developers to
leave this as it is.

[Bug 675965] Re: Apache crashes with glibc detected and stack trace

2010-11-17 Thread Paul Vaughan
In Apache's error.log, the error happened at some point between 10:00:39
and 10:01:18, so I have included a much-reduced access.log with all PHP
files executed between those time points on that day, appropriately
sanitised. Hopefully it will prove useful.

It may be worth mentioning that I filed a very similar bug to this one
within the last month or so, but as it was closed as 'cannot reproduce'

[Bug 675965] [NEW] Apache crashes with glibc detected and stack trace

2010-11-16 Thread Paul Vaughan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

Expected behaviour: no problems, Apache to serve web pages for the
college's VLE.

Actual behaviour: very slow serving pages for ~30 seconds,
/var/log/apache2/error.log shows:

*** glibc detected *** /usr/sbin/apache2: double free or corruption
(fasttop): 0x7f3f1dd0dd50 ***

...followed by a backtrace (file file attached).

I have reported this bug before but was unable to reproduce. It has now
returned but I am unable to locate the previously filed bug so cannot
recall what steps to take now.

[Bug 675965] Re: Apache crashes with glibc detected and stack trace

2010-11-16 Thread Paul Vaughan
Hi Mathias.

You are correct, the server runs PHP scripts, but as part of the open
source VLE Moodle: http://moodle.org/

Moodle is a complex application and I would have no idea what aspect of
it might have caused apache to crash. I develop code for Moodle, but
plugins only, I have little to do with the core code. The only thing I
can think of is that I can look at Apache's other_vhosts_access.log on
the server and try to work out what Moodle was doing at that time, or a
few minutes before. I will do this tomorrow as I am not able to access
the logs right now.

Since upgrading Apache to 2.2.14-5ubuntu8.2 we haven't seen this issue
resurface in over a week. I've also noticed that 2.2.14-5ubuntu8.3 is
available so may tentatively upgrade to that. I hope that's of some use.

log. Please see attached. I'll work on the backtrace this afternoon.

I have gdb running on the server, but as I have no idea what causes the
error I'll just watch Apache's error log until I see it print out the
backtrace and memory map.

After approximately 2 days of normal use, the error has not reoccurred
(whereas normally we'd see it approximately 3-5 times in a 24 hour
period).

I guess we can consider this issue 'gone'.

Cheers.

Have never used this before so it's possible I'm doing something wrong,

Is it worth looking in the logs? Where should I look?

[Bug 650922] [NEW] Unusable display on T42 Thinkpad after 10.10 Beta Update

2010-09-29 Thread Jon Vaughan
Public bug reported:

I updated a Thinkpad T42 from 10.04 last night and after the install the
machine started but no desktop, cursor or login prompt was displayed.
Instead I was presented with a brown screen which occasionally changed
shade or displayed vertical black lines as i moved the mouse around. I
assume that the install messed up the video driver; by typing blindly I
think I was able to log-in (judging by the hdd light), so I think the
machine was possibly otherwise working.

The machine was originally installed as 9.? version ubuntu then updated
to 10.04 and recently I installed xubuntu desktop, and the machine was
running xfce before the problem happened.

I haven't tried SSHing to it or anything but I can do that if someone
lets me know what to look for.

[Bug 255651] Re: floppy disk drive not detected (module not loaded) in Intrepid and Jaunty

2010-06-27 Thread Brian Vaughan
As far as I can tell, all the bug reports regarding floppy disk drives
have been marked as duplicates of this one, and this is marked Fix
Released. But, there's still a bug, somewhat different from the
original description in this bug report. The icon for a floppy drive
appears in Nautilus, but the disk cannot actually be read: it's
indicated that there is no media in the drive.

[Bug 595265] Re: Can not add Facebook account as add button not displayed after authorisation.

2010-06-17 Thread Austin Vaughan
I am having the same problem. I managed to fix it by deleting the
~/.gconf/apps/gwibber directory. But the problem just reoccurred
eventually because I tried removing facebook again from gwibber because
of some other stupid problem. This time I cannot fix it by the same
method and I am back to square one. I am on the verge of giving up with
gwibber entirely until a working version is released.

[Bug 530394] Re: gwibber claims my Facebook password is incorrect but the same password works on Facebook itself

2010-06-17 Thread Austin Vaughan
@ Jari
Could you be more specific about which directory you are talking about?
I tried clearing out ~/.cache/gwibber and also ~/.gconf/apps/gwibber and none
of these solved my problem.

@Omar
I cannot provide a screenshot for you because now I am back to square one where
I cannot even add my Facebook account. Jari's description above in post #13 is
very accurate; this is exactly what happens for me.

I don't understand how gwibber was working normally, but then since last
weekend it has demolished itself. Could a recent update have destroyed
gwibber perhaps?

[Bug 530394] Re: gwibber claims my Facebook password is incorrect but the same password works on Facebook itself

2010-06-15 Thread Austin Vaughan
There are two problems here I have been having using gwibber 2.30.0.1 on
Ubuntu 10.04. Both of them have been experienced by other people,.

1. Since Saturday I have not been able to post anything. It worked fine on
Saturday, now it doesn't. You click send, and nothing happens.
2. After deleting my facebook account from gwibber in an attempt to set it up
again, gwibber would not let me add a facebook account to my list. After
entering my username and password, the Add button was simply not there.
3. After reinstalling gwibber and deleting the config files, I could add
facebook again, but I still could not post anything and the feed was bearing no
relationship to current events. This time, after clicking send, I get the
message telling me there was an authentication error.
Deleted the account from gwibber again, and now I'm back to the situation
where there is no Add button.

Can anyone help with this, or is this bug considered closed? If it is
solved, could someone please help me reproduce the solution? It doesn't
help if someone just says well it now works for me, therefore problem
solved.

[Bug 546871] Re: ath5k system freeze induced by Chrome bookmark sync

2010-05-21 Thread Steven Vaughan
On a Thinkpad t42p with AR5212 hardware and ath5k kernel module, I was
having crashes entirely without chrome, which seems to indicate that
there is something fundamentally wrong with the stock lucid ath5k
module. The problem was less frequent when using only firefox (or no
browser) than when using chrome/chromium (maybe libaio is
exacerbating?). I tried the upstream kernel to no avail. What finally
seems to have worked out for me was installing the 'linux-backports-
modules-wireless' package from lucid-updates. The wifi has, at least,
stabilized enough to stop randomly locking the system (even when using
chrome or chromium). Turning on bookmark sync does still lock the
system, so it seems like there is more than one thing amiss in this
stack.

[Bug 569311] [NEW] Unable to sort by Artist then Song Name

2010-04-24 Thread Vaughan Chandler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

When you sort your music by the artist column, the album name is always
used as the secondary sort field, followed by track number, even if
those columns are not being shown. This makes the songs seem to be
sorted randomly for each artist, since the song names are not taken into
account by the sort algorithm.

For example, with only the artist and track name columns showing, you would see
the following:
ARTIST | NAME
Guns N' Roses | Patience
Guns N' Roses | Don't Cry
Guns N' Roses | November Rain

That appears to be sorted incorrectly, and only seems ok when the other columns
are also visible, example:
ARTIST | ALBUM | NUMBER | NAME
Guns N' Roses | G N' R Lies | 5 | Patience
Guns N' Roses | Use Your Illusion I | 4 | Don't Cry
Guns N' Roses | Use Your Illusion I | 10 | November Rain

Perhaps Banshee should automatically ignore hidden columns when sorting,
or maybe just allow the user to specify a sort variable, such as %A -
%T to sort by artist then track name.

I am using Banshee 1.6.0-1 on Lucid (pre-release), but I've noticed this
since I started using Banshee, several releases back.

[Bug 569311] Re: Unable to sort by Artist then Song Name

2010-04-24 Thread Vaughan Chandler
Thanks for the response. Should I post the bug upstream or is that for
somebody involved with the banshee project to to do? This is my first
bug report so I'm not sure about the process.
