[Bug 773482] Re: Compiz makes the system unstable in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty
I believe I'm having a similar problem. When I attempt to change any settings through Advanced Desktop Effects Settings version 0.9.4-0ubuntu2 (compizconfig-settings-manager). I am a very light user of Ubuntu, so go easy on me. :) Each time I try to tweak a setting I lose the default side bar menu and the system menu that lives up there at the top of the monitor. Being such a novice the only solution I could come up with was to reinstall Ubuntu and not mess with Compiz. Is there a workaround solution if I lose these item again? I'm not planning to mess with Advanced Desktop Effects Settings any more until this issue is resolved, but I'm concerned I may do something somewhere else that impacts Compiz and screws me up again. [Bug 748739] Re: no config tool currently provided for Ubuntu Unity Plugin
When I upgraded to Natty, I was impressed at how icons I'd previously added to my GNOME panel, and two shortcuts to third-party applications on my desktop, were automatically added to the launcher. However, this means that there are several icons on the launcher for applications I seldom use, and the launcher list is rather full. I'd think the three buttons for LibreOffice applications would be better replaced with a single button for the general LibreOffice launcher, at least for me. I quickly found out (by accident) that the launcher buttons can be moved around, and it looks like it's easy enough to add and remove applications from the launcher. However, from many past experiences with munging GUI settings, I always look for a way to back up settings before I mess with them, or at the very least, I look for some way to reset everything to defaults. Looking for such a thing led me to this bug report. I've long felt that while users -- even experienced users -- don't need or generally want to have all the obscure settings for an application right up front, it's easy enough to hide the fiddly bits behind an Advanced Settings button, and have a text configuration file, with comments, that can be edited by experienced users, and can be edited enterprise-wide by a sysadmin with a little shell scripting. It just seems at odds with the general design philosophy of Linux to remove configuration options entirely. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/748739 Title: no config tool currently provided for Ubuntu Unity Plugin -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Scanned the patch. Nice work with the function declaration macros, made it a lot more readable. And your changes are well documented. Why change several wxLogDebug() calls to wxLogMessage()? I would think that type of info would only be clutter to most users, and relevant only to those of us building Debug versions. I see these changes are not backward compatible, but if Gale's okay with that for users, I say commit this patch. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/602934 Title: ffmpeg import/export not working with ffmpeg version in maverick -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 602934]
(In reply to comment #91) from Leland Lucius lel...@audacityteam.org 2011-04-01 00:48:46 EDT --- snip Why change several wxLogDebug() calls to wxLogMessage()? I would think that type of info would only be clutter to most users, and relevant only to those of us building Debug versions. Did that because it was hiding what was going on when searching for the libraries. I felt they would assist with debugging problems when users complained about Audacity not finding the FFmpeg libraries. And since the users get Release versions, the messages wouldn't be available. Yes, obviously I know that. Wanted to raise the issue because they formerly were wxLogMessage() and a few months ago I changed them to wxLogDebug() because I thought it was just cruft, and FFmpeg had been unchanged for a while. Nobody complained, so I thought that was justified. I think the only reason to show them in release versions is if we are actually still getting FFmpeg errors -- but as we're using a new FFmpeg, I think yes, leave them in at least for this release. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the reason for the log. What information in there does the user any good? Isn't it more for the folks that are assisting users with problems? It's useful for debugging, too. :-) And some wxLogDebug() calls are good to leave in, although probably many should be commented out when the debugging is completed. I see these changes are not backward compatible, but if Gale's okay with that for users, I say commit this patch. How far back do you want it to go? I wasn't advocating for *any* backward compatibility, personally. Just wanted to double check with Gale because I said commit the patch, but that question had not been resolved.
(In reply to comment #92) from Gale Andrews g...@audacityteam.org 2011-04-01 14:17:13 BST --- The only point about backwards-compatibility as I see it is to save people coming from 1.3.6 and 1.3.7 (which had our earliest version of FFmpeg) having to get the latest FFmpeg when they upgrade Audacity. Even without this patch those 1.3.6/1.3.7 users would have to upgrade to the current FFmpeg available at Buanzo's site, so we are not making things any worse for them. And if this patch was in 1.3.13 or 1.3.14, users upgrading from 1.3.8+ would be able to carry on with their older FFmpeg 0.5 without having to update to our FFmpeg 0.6 when we release it, so it's better for them. But to answer the question, no the 1.3.6/1.3.7 FFmpeg (the October 2008 versions here): http://lrn.mooo.com/other/gsoc/ffmpegcity/ffmpeg/distributable/ I think those are not too much to ask of beta users, so I am -1 on backward compatibility.

Re: [Bug 441835] Re: Clicking on floppy gives no device media found
The issue is that floppy disks are no longer auto-mounted on the GNOME desktop. Floppy disks can easily be mounted at the command line, so what's lost is a convenience, and one that matters most to novice users. Contemporary personal computers rarely have floppy drives installed; it has been many years since floppy disk drives were a standard feature. It seems to me that it is unlikely for someone who needs access to floppy disks to be a novice computer user and unwilling to use a command line interface. In Apache's error.log, the error happened at some point between 10:00:39 and 10:01:18, so I have included a much-reduced access.log with all PHP files executed between those time points on that day, appropriately sanitised. Hi Mathias. You are correct, the server runs PHP scripts, but as part of the open source VLE Moodle: http://moodle.org/ Moodle is a complex application and I would have no idea what aspect of it might have caused apache to crash. I develop code for Moodle, but plugins only, I have little to do with the core code. The only thing I can think of is that I can look at Apache's other_vhosts_access.log on the server and try to work out what Moodle was doing at that time, or a few minutes before. [Bug 650922] [NEW] Unusable display on T42 Thinkpad after 10.10 Beta Update
Public bug reported: I updated a Thinkpad T42 from 10.04 last night and after the install the machine started but no desktop, cursor or login prompt was displayed. Instead I was presented with a brown screen which occasionally changed shade or displayed vertical black lines as i moved the mouse around. I assume that the install messed up the video driver; by typing blindly I think I was able to log-in (judging by the hdd light), so I think the machine was possibly otherwise working. The machine was originally installed as 9.? version ubuntu then updated to 10.04 and recently I installed xubuntu desktop, and the machine was running xfce before the problem happened. I haven't tried SSHing to it or anything but I can do that if someone lets me know what to look for. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: beta thinkpad xfce -- Unusable display on T42 Thinkpad after 10.10 Beta Update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/650922 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 530394] Re: gwibber claims my Facebook password is incorrect but the same password works on Facebook itself
There are two problems here I have been having using gwibber 2.30.0.1 on Ubuntu 10.04. Both of them have been experienced by other people,. 1. Since Saturday I have not been able to post anything. It worked fine on Saturday, now it doesn't. You click send, and nothing happens. 2. After deleting my facebook account from gwibber in an attempt to set it up again, gwibber would not let me add a facebook account to my list. After entering my username and password, the Add button was simply not there. 3. After reinstalling gwibber and deleting the config files, I could add facebook again, but I still could not post anything and the feed was bearing no relationship to current events. This time, after clicking send, I get the message telling me there was an authentication error. Deleted the account from gwibber again, and now I'm back to the situation where there is no Add button. Can anyone help with this, or is this bug considered closed? If it is solved, could someone please help me reproduce the solution? It doesn't help if someone just says well it now works for me, therefore problem solved. -- gwibber claims my Facebook password is incorrect but the same password works on Facebook itself https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/530394 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

no, the problem is with gwibber. I did not have this problem before. Ever since yesterday, gwibber cannot connect to facebook. I can log into Facebook on the website, but not with gwibber. [Bug 546871] Re: ath5k system freeze induced by Chrome bookmark sync
On a Thinkpad t42p with AR5212 hardware and ath5k kernel module, I was having crashes entirely without chrome, which seems to indicate that there is something fundamentally wrong with the stock lucid ath5k module. The problem was less frequent when using only firefox (or no browser) than when using chrome/chromium (maybe libaio is exacerbating?). I tried the upstream kernel to no avail. What finally seems to have worked out for me was installing the 'linux-backports- modules-wireless' package from lucid-updates. The wifi has, at least, stabilized enough to stop randomly locking the system (even when using chrome or chromium). Turning on bookmark sync does still lock the system, so it seems like there is more than one thing amiss in this stack. -- ath5k system freeze induced by Chrome bookmark sync https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/546871 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 569311] [NEW] Unable to sort by Artist then Song Name
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: banshee When you sort your music by the artist column, the album name is always used as the secondary sort field, followed by track number, even if those columns are not being shown. This makes the songs seem to be sorted randomly for each artist, since the song names are not taken into account by the sort algorithm. For example, with only the artist and track name columns showing, you would see the following: ARTIST | NAME Guns N' Roses | Patience Guns N' Roses | Don't Cry Guns N' Roses | November Rain That appears to be sorted incorrectly, and only seems ok when the other columns are also visible, example: ARTIST | ALBUM | NUMBER | NAME Guns N' Roses | G N' R Lies | 5 | Patience Guns N' Roses | Use Your Illusion I | 4 | Don't Cry Guns N' Roses | Use Your Illusion I | 10 | November Rain Perhaps Banshee should automatically ignore hidden columns when sorting, or maybe just allow the user to specify a sort variable, such as %A - %T to sort by artist then track name.
