[Bug 109887] Re: ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD. Random driver crash.
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback. ** Tags added: cft-2.6.27 -- ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD. [Bug 109887] Re: ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD. Random driver crash.
Another update -- earlier I said that the problem went away when switching to iwl3945 from ipw3945 on my Dell Inspiron 1420. Actually, with the iwl3945 version included in the latest kernel for Ubuntu 7.10, I still experienced periodic network lockups (on the order of once a week or so), just not nearly as bad. I found instructions here http://jkyamog.blogspot.com/2007/12/linux-install-on-hp-6910p-using- ubuntu.html on how to rebuild the linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-generic package from source after updating the source for the mac80211 and iwlwifi packages to the latest versions. This has resolved the lockup issues but wireless still does not work after suspend or hibernate. -- ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD. Arthur, thanks for testing and the update. Glad to hear things are working for you. Martin, since you are the original bug reporter, care to comment if this is resolved for you with the latest Hardy Alpha release? Mikael, I assume you've been pulling in the latest updates periodically. In which case you'll most likely be running the 2.6.24-10 kernel (at the time of this posting). 2.6.24-10 should be sufficient enough for you to test with. Thanks. -- ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD. Re: [Bug 109887] Re: ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD. Random driver crash.
Hardy Alpha works great. Wireless usually resumes just fine from suspend (although once in a blue moon I have to modprobe it to get it to work). I've not had a network lockup since Alpha 3. [Bug 109887] Re: ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD. Random driver crash.
Well, it looks like this is an issue that others are having. I'll post whatever relevant information I think you all might need. First off, the description of what happened (this is the second time this happened). I use a Gateway c-140xl with Gutsy. I had uptime for something around 18-20hrs. The computer was running well for the entire time until the crash. I was using Firefox and Bittorrent (although last time this happened, I wasn't using bittorrnet, nor had I used it prior in the boot). Anyway, suddenly the CPU throttles to 50% (well, 100% on one core and almost none on the other) and the wireless network is disconnected. I open the system monitor and notice that the ipw3945/0 thread is uninteruptable at 50% CPU usage. I have a terminal open already, so I decide to modprobe the driver and then when that doesn't work, I try to set eth1 to monitor mode. At this time, the CPU usage goes back down, but the process is still uninteruptable. I right-click on the process to kill it, and the system-monitor application crashes. Then I tried killing the process from the terminal, and the terminal freezes. So, I decide to Ctl-alt-bksp and reboot X. This fails, and it just gets stuck in the terminal. I push the power button, and it starts shutting down. That's no big deal, until it refuses to finish shutting down. Instead, it says: mount: / is busy and will halt now and just sticks there. I have to force shut things down from there. Looking at the log, the relevant information is as follows: from kern.log: Jan 21 19:03:49 Camelot kernel: [37012.712000] ipw3945: Error sending cmd #08 to daemon: time out after 500ms. I can confirm this bug on a Dell Vostro 1700 running Feisty. It is definitely related with high network traffic, since it occurs guaranteed within 40 minutes of remote X usage, whilst at other moments it occurs only sporadicly. I can confirm that when using the hardware off switch for the card, then stopping the network and unloading the module works. The crash interval seems to be accelerated when using vpn, perhaps because the nic is under heavier load? Crashed 3 times since my last post. SunnyBug, It is marked Assigned to ubuntu kernel team, if it was considered a non release-critical bug they would have marked it Wont Fix. When marked wont fix, it won't be fixed before the next release cycle. I am right? I think all of us with this problem agree that this IS a release critical bug. Google shows no other distributions with this problem, hence it seems to be a critical ubuntu only bug. There are also some duplicate bugs on lanchpad describing similar issues. I have two different crashes. One of these was recoverable, and one of these was not (reboot required). I will note which is which where I can. Note that I'm not 100% sure of this data and will try to capture it at the time it happens next time, but I'm working from memory on what happened in the unrecoverable case (and what action I took afterwards that may be reflected in the messages). Note this first case is NOT the common case and the one that I am referring to. I think it would be worth trying as all the error messages deal with interrupts or IRQ in the first crash. Thanks again. ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.22 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium Assignee: (unassigned) = Ubuntu Kernel Team (ubuntu-kernel-team) Status: New = Confirmed -- ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD. [Bug 109887] Re: ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD. Random driver crash.
My system's relevant information (this set of files does not contain the wireless error, but it is identical to the other poster's). I personally use 2.6.22-13-rt, but I suspect the -rt has nothing to do with it. I had no problems with 2.6.17. 2.6.20 was bad for a myriad of reasons, so I never used it long enough to find out. ** Attachment added: uname-a.log http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9850038/uname-a.log -- ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD. [Bug 109887] Re: ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD. Random driver crash.
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for this particular version of the kernel. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates . However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help. ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium Assignee: (unassigned) = Brian Murray Status: New = Won't Fix -- ipw3945: Error sending LEDS_CMD.
