Then you must have pulled that log from the internal drive instead of the flash drive. Can you get the one from the flash drive? Phillip thanks but I'm 100% sure that the log I have posted is the one on the flash drive. I have cross checked today with tkdiff and they perfectly match. Oops, I was looking at the wrong part of the log file, so nevermind, it looks fine. Can you try renaming grub.cfg to something else? Sorry for the delay. Here are both grub.cfg and default/grub. Today I have modified directly the default file and update. Nothing happened, nothing appears on the screen. it seems that the pendrive is unreadable. Why syslinux is working and not grub. Should I try lilo? I did it, but nothing...the light of the key flashes two time and stops
and nothing appears on the screen. I have also tried update grub on my
hd to include the item linked to the usb and as soos as I click on it I
can see only a magenta screen. Is there a way to debug what is
happening. In which filesystem grub is written on the key (ext2?)

Could be a too long UUID? The Ubuntu is installed on the key under /dev/sbd1. Does it make a difference if ubuntu is installed on primary or logical partition? Thanks Phillips for answering. Could you help me to understand what the installer is writing to the mbr? Is grub itself or just something that tell to the bios in which partition it can find grub? In the past I used to create a /boot partition, what did it contain? Grub? All these question because today I have tried to boot the USB on another machine with BIOS UEFI in legacy mode and it was able to read it properly. I have formatted the key and generated the table partition several time in msdos under gpated or directly from the installer but it always starts from sector 32. Reading around this should not happen with those new tools, isn't it? How can I force the first sector position? what about using gtp? The MBR contains the partition table and initial boot code the bios loads, which is one part of grub. That part loads the grub core, which can be a file in /boot/grub, but since files tend to move around and that would break the MBR's ability to find it ( since it is so small, the location of the file has to be hard coded into the MBR ), it is instead preferred to embed the core image in the sectors between the MBR and the first partition, so it won't move around or be replaced by accident. A /boot partition simply contains everything in the /boot directory, which includes the kernels and /boot/grub, which contains grub's config file and modules that the core loads. Creating a new partition with gparted should make it start at sector 2048, are you sure you deleted it and recreated it ( not just format it )? Maybe you used an ancient version of gparted? 32 sectors is not enough space for the grub core image, which these days needs something like 60-70. It should work the other way though, so if you got the key to boot in another machine, then it is probably fine. Ok I created from scratch the partition in gparted and you are right they start from 2048 now. I think the previous partition table have been created by a tool that generate bootable usb using syslinux. I have checked the first file I have posted RESULTS.txt which refers to fedora and at that time the first partition was 2048 and I had also problem. Holding SHIFT it appear GRUB loading. and nothing else. From a live version I have mounted /dev/sdb1 on /mnt , modified /mnt/boot/grub/grub.cfg and launched update-grub2. After the restart the same behavior but I noticed that grub.cfg have been overwritten again (as the original one) . Should I modify /default/grub or it is necessary to reinstall grub in the mbr after the modification on grub.cfg not only update it? No, that is not normal. The reason for it is that your first partition starts at sector 32 so there is not enough room for grub. Can you delete all of the partitions and reinstall? Newly created partitions should start at sector 2048. Ok I will do it. For the moment I have tested again the Ubuntu Live installed on the same usb stick and I can boot from it. But I believe it is using syslinux and not grub. At least I know it is not a bios limitation. Please find attached the new Results_UbuntuLiveUSB.txt which concern the installation in live mode. Please find attached the result. The usb driver is sdb and for a test today I tried ti install fedora but it did not solve the problem. On another machine, bios efi with bios legacy enabled I have been able to boot from the usb 3.0. So I'm suspecting a bios limitation of my notebook HP DV6 6030el. But I'm sure that at the beginning I was able to boot the live from the same usb stick.
