[Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on

2008-05-05 Thread Ross Peoples
I don't know if anyone is still having issues with this, but since the
newest open-source radeon drivers support aiglx and 2d acceleration for
my card, I no longer need to use Xgl and have exterminated it from my
system like the rodent it is. So my suggestion is don't use Xgl unless
you NEED itwhich I doubt anyone really needs Xgl in the first place.

[Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on

2007-12-04 Thread Dave H
I've also tested riverfr0zen's tip now, and it does not cure the problem
for me (both for general use or full-screen movie playback).

What it does seem to have done is extend the screen blank time from 10
to 20 minutes, which is a slight improvement, and my screensaver kicks
in after 5 mins as intended.

I also uninstalled xserver-xgl to check, and the problem went away. I
reinstalled it to test river's tip and the problem came back.

What with this irritation and the trouble getting my projector to work
with Gutsy, I think the future of Ubuntu for me is a trip back to Feisty
where no problems existed.

Thanks riverfr0zen, your post has been great in clarifying this long
standing issue for me.

I have also discovered that with a fresh install of 7.10 I can play dvds
using Movie Player without any cut off of video and without any changes
to the default screensaver. Might be an alternative to modifying the
default screensaver for some, like me, that forget mods made at a later
date and just want to stream and play dvds from disc.

[Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on

2007-11-29 Thread riverfr0zen
Hi - I had posted that original hack vijinho is referring to. It doesn't
*disable* gnome-screensaver. Here's what is basically done:

1) Move the gnome-screensaver program to gnome-screensaver-actual
2) Re-write gnome-screensaver as a script that does some necessary settings and
passes some necessary options on to gnome-screensaver-actual.
3) Kill any existing gnome-screensaver processes, and run
gnome-screensaver-actual.

The target effect is essentially what one would expect under normal
conditions - i.e. the screen doesn't blank after 10 minutes or so, and
the gnome-screensaver runs as per the settings you specify (e.g. in the
Gnome Screensaver Preferences).

The more lengthy original post can be found here, if you wish to use it as a
basis for a how-to:

Hi,
Same issue here. I run a fresh Gutsy installation (no upgrade) with
nvidia-glx-new and compiz, but xserver-xgl not installed. And the screen goes
blank after 20min of playback on all my players (totem, mplayer, vlc...). 20min
was my setting for screensaver in the screensaver preferences, but changing it
to 2h and unckecking the 'run screensaver was computer is idle' didn't change a
thing...
I'd really like an help there because this is VERY annoying !

2007-11-19 Thread Dave H
Same problem here. Only occurred since I upgraded to Gutsy (ubuntu 7.10
- not beta as far as I know). However, I did install xserver-xgl fairly
soon after the upgrade to get desktop effects (but only to fix a problem
with my Sticky Notes not hiding). I didn't (knowingly) have xserver
installed under Feisty.

Running ATI restricted driver. Screen blanks after 10 mins. I have
tried the suggestions from here: http://www.shallowsky.com/linux/x
-screen-blanking.html but they didn't help either.

Here's the other file.

Also possibly worth noting, although I don't know if it is related.
Since the upgrade, I also get 5 or 6 lines of PCI error warnings after
the Gimp boot screen when I startup. I don't know how to capture this
info though - it zips by quite quickly. They appeared immediately after
I upgraded to Gutsy.

This last comment seems important to me. Are you running xgl + nvidia + compiz?
If so then the issue must be XGL related, being the only common denominator.
I'm running XGL + ati (fglrz) + compiz.
Has anyone running AIGLX + ati (fglrx 8.42) + compiz seen this issue?
If not I'm considering installing the ATI driver from the binary source to run

[Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on

2007-11-04 Thread Yosef Orbach
I am having the same problem:

Steps to reproduce:
1. A fresh install of Gutsy, on a PC with ATI 9600 card.
2. Installed fglrx using restricted driver manager.
3. Reboot and install of xorg-xgl
4. Set Power Management to Never
5. Set gnome-screensaver to off

Result:
After 10 minutes the screen blanks off.

Notes:
Running xset -d :0 s 0 has the effect of screen blanking after 20 minutes.
Disabling DPMS solves the problem but also disables desired features
(screensaver is desired...)

Final Note:
It seems to me that the issue will be solved when ATI fglrx driver 8.42 which
supports AIGLX will enter ubuntu repos. Does anyone know how I can check when
this will happen?

PS:
I haven't attached any logs. If they are desired please let me know.

[Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on

2007-10-28 Thread bwallum
Same with me. Using VLC player on AMD64 rig. Same rig and player worked
ok in Fiesty. I'm on updated Gutsy beta, not clean install. nvidia prop
driver, nVidia 7300GS card. Screen blanks exactly 10 minutes after last
mouse/keyboard event.

I have completely removed compiz. Problem persists. I have re-installed
compiz (really unexpected behaviour for a couple of boots). Problem
persists. Ditto VLC Player.

This may be an aside but when I try to use MPlayer the window opens very
flat. If I go full screen it opens a slightly wider slit of a window
about 40mm deep. Width of window appears unaffected.

Another weird aside, using OpenOffice spreadsheet in any desktop other
than the first one, if I right click on a cell to get the copy menu, the
spreadsheet crashes and disappears. Used in the first desktop, all
behaves as it should. Fortunately OpenOffice recovers all the file.

This is a major bug with a lot of odd effects possibly beyond just an
irritant when playing dvds. It should be rated a lot higher than 'Low'.

I had the same problem, and in addition, the issue that my gnome-

of it). I've managed a very hacky workaround that seems to work nicely

[Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on

2007-10-28 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
So, the fundamental problem here is that Xgl doesn't forward DPMS
screensaver stuff to the underlying X server, and all the power-
management screensaver applications are trying to control the Xgl
server (as they should). However, this means that when (for example)
gnome-power-manager tries to disable DPMS when a movie is playing, this
doesn't affect the underlying X server, which goes ahead and turns off
the screen after 20 minutes.

A clean solution would be for the Xglx server to advertise DPMS based
upon the ability of the underlying X server, and to forward DPMS
requests to the underlying X server. A sort of work around is to turn
off all DPMS support in the underlying server, but that means that the
screen will never be blanked.

Setting back to Triaged. I'm not going to be able to do this hacking
immediately, although I don't believe it'd be too hard to do.

Adding

Section ServerFlags

   Option OffTime 0
EndSection

to xorg.conf apparently solves the problem...

Yes, I am running Gusty Beta with all updates as well. I'm not sure it
was the command Chris gave me that did it. Because I remember that after

I was watching a video in VLC and ever since, opening Screensaver
crashes X. So I'm wondering if it has to do with the new fglrx drivers.

2007-10-06 Thread Ross Peoples
Chris, I don't know if your fix got uploaded, but I tried it for the
first time today, and I still have the problem. I started a video in VLC
and let it run until the screen blanked, which was 20 minutes. My power
settings are set to put the display to sleep after 20 minutes, I was
going to do more testing, but X crashes whenever I open the Screensaver
window, so I cannot adjust the monitor sleep time less than the
screensaver time. I set the display sleep time to 11 minutes and it
still went to sleep only after 20 minutes. So it appears as if the fix
doesn't really change anything. I don't know if the fix is the reason X
crashes when opening the Screensaver window, but is there a command to
undo the xset command you mentioned to see if it is the cause of the X
crashing problem?

Thanks

2007-09-24 Thread Mario Vukelic
Thanks, Ross, for reminding me that I am confused as well. I did in fact
have xserver-xgl installed, from my experiments with compiz/Xgl. At the
time when I used compiz/Xgl, I also had the screen blank every 10
minutes, as I remember now.

I stopped using it a while ago, but I never uninstalled xserver-xgl.
Then, ca. 2 weeks ago there was an update to xorg, and xserver-xgl is
now started automatically if installed. This happened for me, even
though I do not log in with an Xgl session. And this caused the screen
blanks. I have now uninstalled xserver-xgl and all is fine for me.

2007-09-24 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Thanks for the bug. I'm aware of this issue, and I think I've got a fix
(it's caused by the underlying X server's screensaver activating, which
you can disable by running xset -d :0 s 0). It should be included in
the next xserver-xgl upload.

Feel free to test whether running xset -d :0 s 0 fixes this for you or
whether it breaks anything for you and report back here.

[Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on

2007-09-23 Thread Ross Peoples
To be honest, I'm not sure how it works. While testing Gusty, I've done
several format and reinstalls and to get Compiz to work, I had to
install XGL and run an XGL session once I got the proprietary ATI
drivers installed. This last time, I simply installed the drivers,
rebooted, installed the Fusion components, then went to the Effects
window and enabled Normal desktop effects. After that, I installed the
compizconfig-settings-manager and set it up the way I wanted. It just
worked. I didn't have to switch my session to XGL or anything, it just
started working when I enabled Normal effects from the Desktop Effects
window (which is now integrated into the Appearance window). Of course,
enabling it caused an error saying something about not finding the
nvidia drivers, but it worked anyways. So I've been using Compiz Fusion
for at least 2 months now and it hasn't crashed once.

[Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on

2007-09-22 Thread Ross Peoples
I have this problem too playing videos in anything (totem, vlc, etc). I
am running the latest version of Gusty, using the proprietary ATI
drivers, and Compiz Fusion (note that I am NOT using XGL). It happens
after exactly 10 minutes, regardless of the power settings in GNOME. I
have also attached my Xorg.0.log and will post my xorg.conf in a
separate post.
