I don't know if anyone is still having issues with this, but since the newest open-source radeon drivers support aiglx and 2d acceleration for my card, I no longer need to use Xgl and have exterminated it from my system like the rodent it is. So my suggestion is don't use Xgl unless you NEED itwhich I doubt anyone really needs Xgl in the first place. -- Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/125947 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on
I've also tested riverfr0zen's tip now, and it does not cure the problem for me (both for general use or full-screen movie playback). What it does seem to have done is extend the screen blank time from 10 to 20 minutes, which is a slight improvement, and my screensaver kicks in after 5 mins as intended. I also uninstalled xserver-xgl to check, and the problem went away. I reinstalled it to test river's tip and the problem came back. [Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on
Hi - I had posted that original hack vijinho is referring to. It doesn't *disable* gnome-screensaver. Here's what is basically done: 1) Move the gnome-screensaver program to gnome-screensaver-actual 2) Re-write gnome-screensaver as a script that does some necessary settings and passes some necessary options on to gnome-screensaver-actual. 3) Kill any existing gnome-screensaver processes, and run gnome-screensaver-actual. The target effect is essentially what one would expect under normal conditions - i.e. the screen doesn't blank after 10 minutes or so, and the gnome-screensaver runs as per the settings you specify (e.g. in the Gnome Screensaver Preferences). The more lengthy original post can be found here, if you wish to use it as a basis for a how-to: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=584406p=3651954 -- Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/125947 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Same with me. Using VLC player on AMD64 rig. Same rig and player worked ok in Fiesty. I'm on updated Gutsy beta, not clean install. nvidia prop driver, nVidia 7300GS card. Screen blanks exactly 10 minutes after last mouse/keyboard event. I have completely removed compiz. Problem persists. I have re-installed compiz (really unexpected behaviour for a couple of boots). Problem persists. Ditto VLC Player. This may be an aside but when I try to use MPlayer the window opens very flat. If I go full screen it opens a slightly wider slit of a window about 40mm deep. Width of window appears unaffected. Another weird aside, using OpenOffice spreadsheet in any desktop other than the first one, if I right click on a cell to get the copy menu, the spreadsheet crashes and disappears. Used in the first desktop, all behaves as it should. Fortunately OpenOffice recovers all the file. This is a major bug with a lot of odd effects possibly beyond just an irritant when playing dvds. [Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on
So, the fundamental problem here is that Xgl doesn't forward DPMS screensaver stuff to the underlying X server, and all the power- management screensaver applications are trying to control the Xgl server (as they should). However, this means that when (for example) gnome-power-manager tries to disable DPMS when a movie is playing, this doesn't affect the underlying X server, which goes ahead and turns off the screen after 20 minutes. A clean solution would be for the Xglx server to advertise DPMS based upon the ability of the underlying X server, and to forward DPMS requests to the underlying X server. A sort of work around is to turn off all DPMS support in the underlying server, but that means that the screen will never be blanked. Setting back to Triaged. I'm not going to be able to do this hacking immediately, although I don't believe it'd be too hard to do. ** Changed in: xserver-xgl (Ubuntu) Assignee: Chris Halse Rogers (raof) = (unassigned) Status: In Progress = Triaged -- Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/125947 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Adding that section to xorg.conf does not only solves the problem but creates a new one in that the screen will always stay on never blanking or switching off whatsoever. Yes, I am running Gusty Beta with all updates as well. I'm not sure it was the command Chris gave me that did it. Because I remember that after running it, I was able to run Screensaver. The first time it crashed X, I was watching a video in VLC and ever since, opening Screensaver crashes X. So I'm wondering if it has to do with the new fglrx drivers. -- Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/125947 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on
Chris, I don't know if your fix got uploaded, but I tried it for the first time today, and I still have the problem. I started a video in VLC and let it run until the screen blanked, which was 20 minutes. My power settings are set to put the display to sleep after 20 minutes, I was going to do more testing, but X crashes whenever I open the Screensaver window, so I cannot adjust the monitor sleep time less than the screensaver time. I set the display sleep time to 11 minutes and it still went to sleep only after 20 minutes. So it appears as if the fix doesn't really change anything. I don't know if the fix is the reason X crashes when opening the Screensaver window, but is there a command to undo the xset command you mentioned to see if it is the cause of the X crashing problem? [Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on
Thanks, Ross, for reminding me that I am confused as well. I did in fact have xserver-xgl installed, from my experiments with compiz/Xgl. At the time when I used compiz/Xgl, I also had the screen blank every 10 minutes, as I remember now. I stopped using it a while ago, but I never uninstalled xserver-xgl. Then, ca. 2 weeks ago there was an update to xorg, and xserver-xgl is now started automatically if installed. This happened for me, even though I do not log in with an Xgl session. And this caused the screen blanks. I have now uninstalled xserver-xgl and all is fine for me. -- Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/125947 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on
Thanks for the bug. I'm aware of this issue, and I think I've got a fix (it's caused by the underlying X server's screensaver activating, which you can disable by running xset -d :0 s 0). It should be included in the next xserver-xgl upload. [Bug 125947] Re: Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on
To be honest, I'm not sure how it works. While testing Gusty, I've done several format and reinstalls and to get Compiz to work, I had to install XGL and run an XGL session once I got the proprietary ATI drivers installed. This last time, I simply installed the drivers, rebooted, installed the Fusion components, then went to the Effects window and enabled Normal desktop effects. After that, I installed the compizconfig-settings-manager and set it up the way I wanted. It just worked. I didn't have to switch my session to XGL or anything, it just started working when I enabled Normal effects from the Desktop Effects window (which is now integrated into the Appearance window). Of course, enabling it caused an error saying something about not finding the nvidia drivers, but it worked anyways. So I've been using Compiz Fusion for at least 2 months now and it hasn't crashed once. -- Screen blanks after ten minutes when watching video in Mplayer with XGL and Compiz Fusion turned on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/125947 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
