DavidBaucum: Can you post the output of dpkg -l nvidia\* | grep ii upload the /var/log/Xorg.0.log along with the output of dmesg right after X fails to start up from the fresh install that failed? This should help narrow down the issue. Can you also indicate which version of Gutsy you were using? I am at work right now. Hopefully tonight I will have time to do this. My current install is corrupted with the NVidia installer, so I will reformat, install all updates, use the restricted drivers tools and then when it fails on reboot, I will run those commands and let you know what I get. [Bug 134633] Re: xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new
Ok, here's exactly what I did: 1. Reinstalled Ubuntu Gutsy 5 on my second partition. 2. On first boot I immediately ran Update Manager and installed all of the updates. 3. I wasn't asked to, but for good measure I rebooted. 4. Immediately after rebooting I opened the Restricted Drivers Manager. 5. I put a check in NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (latest cards). 6. After it downloaded and installed the package I rebooted as prompted. 7. The xserver failed to load and I was dropped to the CLI. 8. I ran the commands as above and piped them to files on the desktop. 9. I ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and got myself a working xorg.conf 10. Booted up and posted this. ** Attachment added: The results of dmesg http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9038925/dmesg.txt -- xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/134633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 134633] Re: xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new
DavidBaucum: If you manually installed the NVIDIA driver check out the NvidiaManual link I posted earlier as some of the steps can play a significant role in whether the manual driver is reloaded correctly after a reboot (although if you do a manual install your issue is definitely a support case and not a standard bug report). For the meantime, I would be interested in seeing the output of lspci -nn for your card (doesn't matter which version of Ubuntu you are running). -- xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/134633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 134633] Re: xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new
The results are as follows; 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation Unknown device [10de:0400] (rev a1) I understand that problems with the NVidia installer are beyond the support of the Ubuntu staff. I don't think the problem lies with NVidia, but specifically with Gutsy as this problem is not an issue with Feisty, but it is an issue with two separate Gutsy installs. If there are extra steps that need to be taken to ensure that the NVidia modules are persistent across reboots, then the Restricted Drivers module should take care of making sure those are dealt with appropriately. -- xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/134633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 134633] Re: xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new
The card is an NVidia 8600 GTS found at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130084 My PC has Feisty 32-bit, Gutsy 32-bit and Gutsy 64-bit. I think the problem is that under Gutsy (32 64 bit), after a reboot, the NVidia module seems to be lost. If I run the NVidia installer everything runs great. Compiz runs flawlessly too. Then when I reboot I get the error about the X server not being able to find the NVidia module. If I run the NVidia installer (and opting for it to builed the module) again then I can get back in to X by running startx. After a reboot I'm back to where I started. I don't get this behavior at all under Feisty. Everything installs and persists after reboots. I'll report some more information in a couple hours about what I experience under Gutsy. Let me know about any tests or whatever you want me to run and I'll run them. I'll have reinstall Gutsy as much as possible. -- xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/134633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 134633] Re: xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new
DavidBaucum: This is actually more of a support issue than a bug report. You may get a quicker/better response posting your query over on http://answers.launchpad.net/ . A very brief glance at that Xorg.0.log suggests that your NVIDIA binary driver kernel module is not being (or could not be) loaded and that is why Xorg failed to start. While this information alone won't help you fix your issue it is a starting point (there are many reasons why the binary module will not load). Generally speaking it is easiest to use restricted-manager to enable the binary drivers (as mentioned on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia ) but I'm guessing you already have your reasons for not using it... -- xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/134633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 134633] Re: xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new
I tried the Restricted Drivers tool but when I clicked on the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver it told me that it could not install nvidia-glx-new. So I ran it manually and then rebooted. Solving the problem was easy for me. I uninstalled nvidia-glx-new, ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and when back at the GUI, grabbed the drivers straight from NVidia's website and that worked just fine. BUT, installing nvidia-glx-new should have taken care of everything and not messed everything up. A less Linux savy user would have either needed to reinstall or would just dump Ubuntu all together for not working right. -- xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/134633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 134633] Re: xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new
DavidBaucum: Such a response seems a reasonable and in fact I feel that is the safest response. I've noticed that the people who will never try again are those who invest the most time attempting to unsuccessfully resolve their issue. Since you have installed the drivers manually you may want to take a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual so you are aware of what may happen. Additionally it may be useful to indicate what lspci reports your card as being... -- xorg.conf borked after installing nvidia-glx-new https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/134633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
