[Bug 1362734] Re: settings manager contains entries (icons) that are obsolete and cannot be fixed or removed

2014-08-30 Thread MR Zenwiz
There are way more entries in both of those directories than show up in
the settings manager, but since I can't tell which is which, I suppose
I'll have to trust the software.

Having been in software development for over 34 years, I can assure you
that is not a comforting thought.

[Bug 1362734] Re: settings manager contains entries (icons) that are obsolete and cannot be fixed or removed

2014-08-30 Thread Thaddäus Tintenfisch
The package manager is usually able to clean up obsolete system files.
However, files in the user's home directory will stay untouched.

As I already mentioned, the settings manager is a simple GUI application
and its job is to display a subset of the installed and manually created
launchers (basically visualize the settings category which is hidden
from the start menu).

I'll close this report by marking it as invalid - not a bug in the
specified package. Do feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

** Changed in: xfce4-settings (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Invalid

Sounds good. I found the extra junk and deleted it and that seems to
work.

Thanks.

[Bug 1362734] Re: settings manager contains entries (icons) that are obsolete and cannot be fixed or removed

2014-08-29 Thread Thaddäus Tintenfisch
Maybe the alternative menu editor alacarte does the job better. If you
want to edit a specific application launcher manually via text editor,
then go ahead and try to locate it in /usr/share/applications (global
ones) or ~/.local/share/applications (user ones).

So, do we agree that there is no bug in xfce4-settings? The settings
manager only displays app launchers which belong to the settings
category.

[Bug 1362734] Re: settings manager contains entries (icons) that are obsolete and cannot be fixed or removed

2014-08-28 Thread Thaddäus Tintenfisch
Thank you for your report. Unfortunately, this is not a bug in the
settings manager.

Xubuntu 14.04 installs the easy-to-use menu editor menulibre by
default and you can use this editor to create/edit/hide application
launchers. Furthermore, you can install the gksu package if some
application still requires it.

[Bug 1362734] Re: settings manager contains entries (icons) that are obsolete and cannot be fixed or removed

2014-08-28 Thread MR Zenwiz
There are some problems with this answer:

menulibre does not work properly at all. I have filed a bug about this.

menulibre only edits the main menu (mouse icon / applications menu), not
any other menu AFAICT.

The nvidia settings app can and does run with pkexec, but the point is
that the extra is an artifact of my 12.04 system, and I did a fresh
14.04 install over it (not changing my /home partition), so I don't
believe it should be there at all.

If there is a general purpose menu editor that works, I'd be delighted
to use it. Or if I knew where the config files for the apps were I
could edit them.
