Kubuntu Hardy, 2.6.24-23-generic, Thunderbird 2.0.0.21. Also seeing this problem. I tried Peter's suggestion of adjusting the sound buffer, and found that when the buffer is changed (and thus the sound system is restarted), sounds in thunderbird play just fine. I had this bug for ages and I have just solved it in the most trivial way that I can't believe it. My system is configured to use ALSA, I'm using KDE as a Window Manager and this problem has affected me with both Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.21. I have just opened the Sound System KDE Control Module and noticed that the sound buffer was set to 232 ms, I changed it so that it was as large as possible and now the full wav file plays correctly. This problem seems to be that Thunderbird is relying on the sound daemon programs to buffer the audio. With mine in evolution the new email sound works fine for a while the stops working completely. Usually have to logou and back in to get it to work again but it doesn't last very long. Eiterh something is going to sleep and not waking back up or its loosing the link somehow. Wouldn't even know where to start looking. My Login Manager plays all sounds full lenght, though. So me and Olek seem to only partially share this problem. I have this issue in Thunderbird as well. I also have it in Firefox via the DownThemAll! extension, which has an option to play a sound when the download has finished. Last time I looked at this, this was the most likely culprit: http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/widget/src/gtk2/nsSound.cpp Some data points: 1) I don't know if this is always the case, but the last few times I've rebooted, my mail notification has been truncated as soon as I've started Thunderbird, even if it's the first app to start. i.e. there are no obvious culprits that are conflicting with or breaking Seamonkey sound playback. 2) The truncation comes and goes. My Thunderbird/DTA wavs aren't getting cut off at the moment. 3) Here are some links I found the last time I sleuthed this. Unfortunately, it seems that I spoke too soon. :( The bug came back after I rebooted. I've also noticed the same problem with the GNOME Login manager sounds. Interestingly enough, the system sounds manager seems to work fine. I'm not sure if this is a related bug in the Login manager or if the bug is actually in a third package. I have a pretty standard Gutsy install on a Toshiba Satellite 1130-S155 laptop.
