Hi all! I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and don't had sound but: My souncard start working editing the file /etc/pulse/default.pa and commenting the 4 lines mentioned in the comment #69 and restarting pulseaudio. My Smart Link modem work properly with the sl-modem-daemon (no driver neded). And i have added the line: options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch to the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to make Headphones/Speakers selector to work ok. The problem is that, like others, i have no devices to configure in sound preferences application (hardware tab). But the sound work. adding some more info =upgraded from maintained 9.04to 9.10 386i via update manager and upgraded afterwards to UbuntuStudio 9.10, another issue is that the System is not booting when my printer(USB MP220) is connected. Is there something wrong with the new device manager or GRUB2. I can boot without having the printer connected. I fear here that Grub is trying to boot from the printer :-) The printer have a multi card reader an have also ports for a storage device like, USB,MS,SD,etc; At boot Ubuntu is loading during the bootsequence the the bootstab from the HDD twice: code booting from HDA 0,5 etc, etc, In oder to get the sound my workarround is currently for your session the steps are: 1. Open you terminal and type $ sudo alsa force-reload and hit Enter Enter your login password and hit Enter ( Alsa will now turn of the devices and restart) 2.Go than to the Gnome Alsa Mixer (Aplications=SoundVideo=Gnome Alsa Mixer) Please uncheck the box for the Master Volume and pull up the volume level 3.At the upper taskbar click on the speaker icon to adjust the volume. Test now if the sound works for you too. UDEV is might involved indeed since it causes boot issues with some USB devices, I need here a hint to locate the files to check in which order they are loaded. -- [Karmic] processes holding /dev/dsp* or /dev/snd/pcm* cause pulseaudio: card not found - Null Output / Dummy Output https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/394500 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I think I suffer on the same issue, the only way for me to get sound is to open the terminal and to execute this: sudo alsa force-reload afterwards I get the sound, Everything is working than correctly, only the internal microphone volume have to be adjusted. Downloaded the Karmic RC alternate iso, upgraded distribution from Jaunty, no problem with sound. Then downloaded the Final Release yesterday upgraded and the sound disappeared. Well, what if I want to use my modem ? It was working on Jaunty, so this is a regression...and the above fix is just a workaround... I know this is a proprietary driver, so we can't blame ubuntu dev...Anyway, analog modems are less and less used so it's not a serious regression... The SmartLink modem daemon is the application part of thedriver for recent modems produced by Smart Link Ltd. This package replaces (along with hardware access drivers) the olddriver generation (2.7.x) which consisted of kernel modules only. It needs a kernel driver to access the hardware. This can be eitherrecent ALSA (shipped with a newer kernel (=2.6.4) with Alsa supportand intel8x0m module) which is sufficient for basic operation anddata/Internet connection, or the SmartLink kernel driver which isprovided by separate packages which you can build using the source fromthe sl-modem-source package.

Analyzing the issue, the problem lies in module-udev-detect. As discussed on irc, udev-detect is doing the right thing here. We cannot assume that just because your hardware is capable of simultaneously streaming to hw:0,0 and hw:0,6, all configurations must be. An example of where this breaks is on older families of Creative Labs Live and Audigy hardware, where hw:0,0 and hw:0,3 are exclusive.
