[Bug 451169] Re: Performance really dropped with 2.6.31-8-rt

2009-10-15 Thread Alessio Igor Bogani
Eric,

Hoping you understanding that I can't let that bug open on linux-rt
neither re-enable Dynamic Ticks because turn it off lead to a lot of
benefits. So we have three way:

1) Perhaps is it the right time to give a look on Linux _native_ reaper
applications? ;)
In that case I'll close this bug.

2) Add nohz=on kernel command-line parameter into grub configuration
files to add it automatically (also after kernel updates). Again also in
that case I'll close this bug.

3) Or do you prefer continue to use Reaper on Wine? So in that case I
move this bug against Wine but, sincerely, I don't think that receive a
lot of consideration (I suppose that almost all people run Window
applications on Wine use -generic kernel).

Please let me know.

Thanks!

[Bug 451169] Re: Performance really dropped with 2.6.31-8-rt

2009-10-15 Thread Eric Schwandt
I agree that this seems very specific to Wine, and perhaps even certain
plugins in Reaper under wine. I've been playing with other projects and
they seem to play fine still. It was only because I had been looking at
a certain old project with some really cpu intensive effects going that
caused me to notice this downturn in performance. I'm not even sure it
is worth my using the nohz=on parameter, as it is clear that realtime
performance is improved without it (except maybe for this case, with
these vsts). If I start running into this problem regularly with Reaper,
at least i know how to fix it now. Definitely too many variables between
wine, wineasio, Reaper and multiple third party vsts to be worth trying
to figure out why no dynamic ticks makes a difference. I'll be giving
Ardour another good look when it hits 3.0 anyway.

Certainly close this bug. And thanks for all of the rapid help.

hanzomon4,

Reboot your machine inserting in GRUB menu nohz=on to reenable Dyamic Ticks.
So report results and attach the dmesg output.

Thanks!

2009-10-14 Thread hanzomon4
Ok I added the nohz=on option and ran hydrogen, qsynth, and rosegarden
all synced with ardour through jacktrans(via qjackctl). I recorded the
audio from hydrogen and qsynth into ardour(2 mono tracks). I also had
evolution, gwibber, empathy and skype running. I only experienced 3
xruns at 5.something latency. In short performance was great, no
slowdown in the UI... all butter

I attached the requested dmesg

[Bug 451169] Re: Performance really dropped with 2.6.31-8-rt

2009-10-14 Thread Eric Schwandt
It may be too early to close this. I have been running Reaper with
wineasio with the last two RT-kernels with absolutely great results.
After the upgrade to -8 I now have many xruns, crackling and sound
dropouts. Ansolutely terrible performance on the same project that still
plays perfectly with RT-kernel -6 and -7 (so not due to the recent Wine
update). I tested with the nohz=on option and everything is back to
normal. At least in my case this makes a huge differense. dmesg output
attached from when I added nohz=on to the grub boot line.

Yeah something is wrong with the kernel that gets fixed when you
enable this option. Try booting without the nohz=on option and see if
you get even better performance. If that's the case then something is
wrong somewhere and mysteries are no good.

2009-10-14 Thread Eric Schwandt
Rebooting again without appending nohz=on to the grub line has brought
the poor performance back. Definitely the change to dynamic ticks being
off by default seems to make a huge difference for realtime audio on my
thinkpad. Funny that a few releases ago (was it Hardy?) it was
completely the opposite for a while.

Eric,

Sorry but the bug report can't be marked as Confirmed because only you
incur in this issue (at the moment, at least).

Please provide:
1) dmesg without nohz=on kernel command-line parameter
2) output of cyclictest -n -t3 -p99 with and without nohz=on (cyclictest is
included into rt-tests package)

FYI Dynanic Ticks are off by default since Hardy (included).

Thanks!

Here ia the dmesg without the nohz=on option. Regarding the cyclictest
command - how long does it run for. It has been going for a while and
I'm not sure if you just need averages for a certain amount of time, or
will it eventually finish?

[Bug 451169] Re: Performance really dropped with 2.6.31-8-rt

2009-10-14 Thread Eric Schwandt
Just base on output for about 5-10 minutes of cyclictest

Without adding nohz=on at boot: All three lines had minimum of 4, avg of
11 and maximum about 700.

When adding nohz=on at boot: T0 had a min of 5, avg of 33 and max about
700. T1 had a min of 5, avg of 25 and max about 700. T2 had a min of 5,
avg of 17 and max of about 700.

If I'm interpreting this right, it does seem that realtime performance
is better without the nohz=on being used.

But when it comes to playback of a medium sized project in Reaper
running under wine, performance is much better with nohz=on or with the
two previous rt-kernels. Maybe it is wine or wineasio that aren't
playing nice with the dynamic ticks being off.

Could be.. I don't use wine really... but performance in my other apps
are fine now. Is it only wine or wine apps that seem crappy? If so
perhaps filing a bug against wine may be the best course of action.

By the way thanks to all of you for helping to work this out.
