[Bug 496937] Re: Jaunty: kacpid running at 70% of CPU Time on Pentium 4

2010-07-06 Thread bernard
I don't know what happened, but (after update?) things are -currently-
looking a lot better. My asus still overheats from time to time (typical
for asus apperently) and then kacpid kicks in, but now, instead of
staying up there hogging my cpu, it falls back into the small cpu-usage
category.

Don't know what ubuntu guys did, but it did the trick for me !

I tried with acpi=off = works (starts up nicely, no kacpid to be seen),
but after 10 min, my whole system freezes.:(
acpi=ht = just tried it, but didn't work. I've got kacpid at 88% again

I'm not giving up !!! :)

2010-06-23 Thread Its Me
sorry to hear kacpid is still giving you trouble. My case went away after I
installed a high end sound card. Not sure why but it did.

Some of the comments I got from the guru's at Ubuntu, was to try liveCD of
the last version of Ubuntu. It did not help in my case.

Have you tried modifing the kernel parameters related to ACPI at boot time?
I tried the following ones with results indicacted:
ACPI=OFF solves the problem of CPU Time (of course as theirs no ACPI
running).
ACPI=HT works as well, though I loose dual processor feature.

 Hi -

Having a problem on my Pentium 4 box with Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty). CPU 0 Time
is being consumed by KACPID process. I have done some debug on this to
 confirm.

The following PS command shows the problem:
  ps -p 18 -p 19 u
USER PID %CPU %MEMVSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
 root 18 71.9 0.0 0 0 ? R
 04:17 12:43 [kacpid]
 root 199.0 0.0 0 0 ? R
 04:17 1:36 [kacpi_notify]

Tried older versions of than the current kernel, and problem still ocured.
Though I don't recall seeing this before, and I watch my CPU Time and
Temperature with gkrellm every time. Current kernel (uname -a output):

 nat...@nathan-lab-pc:~$ uname -a
 Linux nathan-lab-PC 2.6.28-17-generic #58-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 1 18:57:07 UTC
 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

Modified the kernel parameters related to ACPI at boot time, as follows:
ACPI=OFF solves the problem of CPU Time (of course as theirs no ACPI
 running).
ACPI=HT works as well, though I loose dual processor feature.

Attached is the recommend files when reporting bugs like this.

Is there anything that can be done to fix this issue and still keep the
 dual processor feature?

 thanks...

looks like I finally found a solution

I removed powernowd
sudo aptitude purge powernowd

And now my laptop is not running into the high cpu usage for kacpid

Hope this fixes it for good .

Hello,

I'm also having these problems on and off.

kicking in the fan at full speed, really anoyingly.

Have you recently installed any new hardware on the laptop? Maybe changed
the BIOS settings? The reason I ask, is the issue I was having went away
when I installed some new hardware (sound card, in my case). Can't explain
it, but it did. Also, in my case kacpid was only going up high for one of 2
CPU's.

2009-12-17 Thread Its Me
Hi --

Just got done creating and booting from a liveCD of Karmic (9.10
release), and unfortunately the problem is still present. Below is key
data showing the successful boot of Karmic and that kacpid was consuming
65% of CPU0 Time still.

Linux ubuntu 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:04:26 UTC
2009 i686 GNU/Linux

USER PID %CPU %MEMVSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
root 1965.9 0.0 0 0 ?R 20:58
6:40 [kacpid]
root 20 7.5 0.0 0 0 ?S 20:58
 0:45 [kacpi_notify]

Is there anything more I can do to with this problem? Creating liveCD's
takes a long time do the poor down load speed I get on my old DSL modem
(~ 7hours for 700M file, which I do at night).

thanks...

Thank you for your report. Can you please also get a tarball of /proc/acpi
directory
  cp -r /proc/acpi /tmp
  tar -cvjf ~/acpi.tar.bz /tmp/acpi
and attach that to this report.

Also, are you able to test this in Karmic? You should be able to
reproduce this from a LiveCD. Thanks in advance.

2009-12-15 Thread Its Me
Hi -

Thanks so much for getting back to me on this. Attached is the tar file
of the ACPI directory as requested.

I'll work on getting a liveCD of 9.10 going. It will be another day
before I get it done. Also, I checked my update logs, and I did not
see any updates to ACPI. Maybe I did not look in the correct place or
use the right method. But I am sure I did not have this problem a few
weeks ago. But when I try older Kernels, the problem still exists.
Which I believe this aligns with the issue being something in the ACPI
software, since this ACPI is independent of the kernel (I think?).

thanks again...

2009-12-15 Thread Connor Imes
Thanks for attaching that, we'll let a kernel developer decide what's
going on - ACPI is a standard for power management, and is in the domain
of the kernel as it uses modules that implement power management. I'll
mark this bug as Triaged so a developer can have a look, but please do
let us know if this works with a Karmic LiveCD, or even a Lucid
development LiveCD, as the developer may request that you try that.
