[Bug 72226] Re: All translations from the source not included
This bug has been reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue ? Are the correct translations part of latest Ubuntu release? The Ubuntu Changelog shows that version 0.9.6 has been merged on Nov. 2007. This version includes the following changes from upstream: 2006-12-16 Niklas Knutsson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> * New French translation (Nicolas Laug <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>) 2006-11-18 Niklas Knutsson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> * Update Swedish translation 2006-11-07 Niklas Knutsson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> * Update Dutch translation (Jaap Woldringh <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>) Thanks in advance. ** Changed in: libqalculate (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- All translations from the source not included https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/72226 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 72226] Re: All translations from the source not included
I am satisfied that I seem to have thrown a stone in the pond and that this bug is not the result of people unwilling to respect a translation (and the translator!). Данило Шеган even says it is a critical bug, and it is. It can drive people away from Ubuntu. Niklas says it is a problem in Ubuntu, NOT in Debian, so the problem must be somewhere in the process of building the Ubuntu packages. From personal experience (I translated some more) this problem does occur in other packages also, such as kst (very very "obsolete" translators credited), and gcalctool, which was translated again by me and committed for me some time ago by Wouter Bolsterlee (I am not a member of the Dutch translation team for Ubuntu). With no apparent result in the tribals of Gutsy so far. I was even considering switching to OpenSUSE or Fedora, but love Kubuntu too much for now to do this. And I see that my complaint is taken very seriously, for which I thank you very much. -- All translations from the source not included https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/72226 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 72226] Re: All translations from the source not included
(I am going to go a bit off-topic, excuse me for that) @Tino: the upload seems to have gone OK from my testing: https://bugs.launchpad.net/rosetta/+bug/107737/comments/12 Also, if you ever encounter a problem like the one you had with Feisty, be sure to file a bug as soon as you notice it, and preferably even mark it 'Critical'. It's way easier to debug problems as soon as they happen, because data in DB changes over time. Also, it's basically impossible for us to revert to old active Launchpad translations, since we don't keep that data in the database. If it happens, it's indeed a bug, and we want to know about it. [Bug 72226] Re: All translations from the source not included
There was a bug that caused translations to get lost during the Edgy development cycle, but they said it was fixed during the Feisty cycle... (And you are the first to say that this is still happening.) Maybe the problem is that you are also upstream and Launchpad gets confused by that? Or it could have something to do with the files that you upload; are they based on a .po that you downloaded first? Let's see if there is a known bug about this...
Jan Claeys, it's not only that Launchpad translations take priority, Older Launchpad translations seem to take priority over newer Launchpad translations as well. I've experienced this in the coreutils package. I've meticulously corrected the ubuntu package with the translations from upstream during the feisty beta period. It was perfect for a short time. Just before the release of feisty, my ubuntu launchpad translations for ubuntu feisty were overwritten with the old launchpad versions. All my work was lost. I've repeated the proces for the ubuntu package of coreutils in the gutsy beta (tribe). I've uploaded the correct translations three weeks ago. I just checked and the coreutils translation for gutsy is back to the faulty version of 2007-04-13. I'll redo the gutsy translation for coreutils in launchpad again in a couple of days, but I'll bet my ass that they'll be reset to the old translation just before release of the next tribe, again. [Bug 72226] Re: All translations from the source not included
Umm, libqalculate is a Universe package and as far as I know has never been translated in Launchpad. We don't use the language packs in Universe. This package is straight from Debian, we didn't modify anything. All we did was rebuild it on an Ubuntu infrastructure. I guess something must have gone wrong somewhere along the line. Wouter, please keep in mind that we are all contributing our time as well. We can't always get to everything and we can't always chase down every problem. In this case I don't know what we're supposed to update to. We have the latest package from Debian. As Ming said, if you have any ideas as to why some bits of the translations are getting lost in building we'd be glad to help get the fix uploaded.
And like was said a thousand times before: almost all of those issues date back to when everybody could make translations in launchpad without any access control, and the fact that launchpad translations take priority over upstream translations. This has nothing to do with frequent updates (actually, all those recent translations are in the Rosetta database, there is just no easy way to access them).
I've said this like a thousand times before: UBUNTU NEEDS TO UPDATE TO UPSTREAM TRANSLATIONS VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY OFTEN. These Ubuntu issues are extremely annoying and make me feel worthless. I contribute LOTS, and I mean LOTS of my valueable free time to open source development and translations, and it's kinda sad to see your work gone lost because of Ubuntu stupidity. Please. Fix. [Bug 72226] Re: All translations from the source not included
This package hasn't changed since September 2006. So whatever problem it has then, it still have it now. If someone can figure out why the Ubuntu package building process lost the translations, I'm willing to help fixing it. Meanwhile I don't have time to investigate myself.
In the latest tribe (4) of Gutsy this problem still exists. As the Dutch translator I must say that it is no pleasure to find that one's translations in (K)Ubuntu are not taken seriously. It's not only in Qalculate! that this happens, this happens in other programs that I translated too, such as Gcalctool and kst, for which I also filed bug reports a while ago. I hope that something will be done about this, a problem that seems only to exist in the Ubuntu family of distributions. The original poster of this bug posted this about 9 months ago ... Maybe the final Gutsy will be OK. I hope so, as translating this way is no joy. -- All translations from the source not included https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/72226 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
