I have the same problem on my home build desktop computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.2.0-24. I have two video cards and therefore my case might be of interest for you. One is Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT and the other is ATI Radeon HD 4870. Soon after 12.04 LTS was released I installed with ATI Radeon card installed. Also soon after that I started to experience the bug described here. I was testing several of these mainline kernels but I as I was player around with the new Ubuntu I soon turned the system unbootable. After that I installed Ubuntu onto a new hard drive and as I opened the case I decided to test whether that Nvidia card works and it did (though there was still problem with desktop effects but I think it claimed to be in 3D as then certain MyUnity options become available). I could shut down my computer and after few weeks I was already hoping that the bug had been crushed but when I put back in my ATI card the bug was back. I have tested 3.4.0-030400rc6 mainline kernel for a week or so and I can shut down the computer put now ATI driver has new tricks. When I try to install it with jockey it gives error message. When I restart Ubuntu the driver seems to have been installed and the AMD Catalyst Control Centre is there but it crashes when I try to use. And the Ubuntu seems to be in 2D. The same is when I use 3.2.0-24 without ATI driver. But in both cases I can shut down the computer properly. I can upload more logs or terminal outputs and give more information about the hardware if needed. I just didn't want to flood the post with information that might be irrelevant for you. I could also install another Ubuntu onto a spare hard drive for testing purposes but that can not happen before 7 June as I need to get some important work done and I also need to travel. Thanks so much Christopher, rigth now I'm using Ubuntu without ATI/ADM driver, evething is ok without it, even when I will like to have 3D acceleration I'll keep it without the driver until Conical or someone else found the way to fix it !!! I'm now running kernal release 3.4.1.1 and the NVIDIA accelerated graphics (post release) update driver. Now, the Unbuntu shut-down option works as expected. Previously it worked exactly like the Unbuntu Log Out option. Experiencing this problem as well. I'm running a homebuilt system with an Gigabyte GA-E350N mobo. It has ATI Radeon HD 6310 video card and I'm using the proprietary drivers. My kernel is 3.2.0-24-generic. I didn't have the problem on 11.10 but do on 12.04. Suspend works though. I have a second homebuilt system using a older GA -G31 mobo with a nvidia 210 video card. Also experiencing this on a Dell Studio 1558 with AMD RV710 series graphics card and proprietary drivers. I wonder if there's something ACPI related - I'm getting this problem rarely when plugged in, but almost always when on battery power. I experience this behavior with all my 12.04 machines, independent of brand, physical, or virtual. I thought I'd added a comment earlier, but I don't see it. If this is a repeat, I'm sorry. I'm seeing the problem on a home built system built on a GA-E350N motherboard with an ATI 6310 graphics card. Reboot and Shutdown work, the system hangs on the purple screen with the Ubuntu logo. Sometimes I get the dots, sometimes I don't. Once it hangs the only path forward is to power down using the rocker switch. Two other observations: 1. Suspend works as it should. 2. Shutdown and Reboot failure on Dell XPS/NVidia/12.04 Sometimes sudo reboot -h now works, sometime not. Had the same problem on 11.10 so I didn't install nVidia driver on a clean 12.04 install but problem was still there. Installed the nVidia driver because it didn't make a difference. Experiencing this problem on two machines: laptop Lenovo X220 and desktop Dell Optiplex. Both running without any proprietary modules, only Intel graphics. Adding INIT_HALT = POWEROFF to /etc/default/halt solved the problem with rebooting. Adding INIT_HALT = POWEROFF to /etc/default/halt did not solve my problem. The only thing that seems to work for me is to use a different kernel and not use any Nvidia drivers. What do I need to do to change the status of this bug from incomplete? Does incomplete mean that no one will work on fixing the bug? --- Adding INIT_HALT = POWEROFF to /etc/default/halt did not solve my problem. The only thing that seems to work for me is to use a different kernel and not use any Nvidia drivers. --- Same thing for me. --- What do I need to do to change the status of this bug from incomplete? Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.4kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. I'm kind of new to this. I don't know much about testing a kernel. Are there step by step directions?
