[Bug 305075] Re: intrepid-proposed iwl3945 module won't load

2008-12-04 Thread David N. Welton
Linux fortrock 2.6.27-10-generic something something something...
- I can't connect to the internet with the other kernel because the
wireless driver is broken! Sorry, but I don't have time to reboot just
for a uname.

I am attaching a copy of /var/log/kern.log, rather than dmesg - once
again, I am busy at the moment with work and don't have time to drop
everything and reboot. At the earliest convenient opportunity, I will
do so and provide a dmesg dump as well.

[Bug 305114] [NEW] Mime-database isn't updated during install

2008-12-04 Thread JohannesB
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scribus

Ubuntu 8.04, scribus 1.3.3.11

Scribus-files can't be associated with scribus because Nautilus treats
them as ordinary text-files. Under /usr/share/mime/packages is a file
called scribus.xml that provides all the necessary information. So you
have to update the mime-database by hand and have to restart the
X-server in order to get things work. i think this should be done during
install.

[Bug 268502] Re: Bluetooth association no longer works

2008-12-04 Thread Jamie Lokier
kylea, I usually boot with the Bluetooth radio off. It's USB internally
and disconnected when I boot, then I switch it on after logging in.

I still have this pairing problem every time with 2.6.27 kernels.
So changing the load sequence wouldn't fix it.

The information we need may be to bisect between the last kernel which
works reliably and the one after, trying it on someone's machine until
the change which breaks it is identified. Alas I don't have the time
for it, so I just run old kernels with Intrepid.

I've used all combinations of Hardy/Intrepid kernels, and Hardy/Intrepid

The probles I've had are entirely dependent on kernel version, and the
bluez version makes no difference at all (that I've found).

Therefore I think this bug should be marked as a duplicate of #268502,

The kernel is the place to look for this one.

The problems I've observed are dependent on kernel version, and not
dependent at all on bluez version (I've used all combinations.Because

[Bug 305118] [NEW] Inconsistent font rendering between apps

2008-12-04 Thread Gladstone
Public bug reported:

With default system font settings i.e. full hinting and sub-pixel
highlighting, using QT4 apps like Opera, by default, there a large
inconsitancies between the font rendering. Largley, they are rendered
without hinting and look plain ugly.

Hinting/antialiasing settings set in user preferences are ignored and
are set based upon symlinks located at /etc/fonts/conf.d (i.e. defaulted
at medium font hinting, no subpixel hinting).

I've noticed this since Gutsy and is still in effect in Intrepid.
Thankfully, the following post describes how to fix it -- by changing
some symlinks:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4683737postcount=7

But this is a bug that should be fixed in future releases.

[Bug 300773] Re: Removal does not clean up after dkms, l-r-m(?)

2008-12-04 Thread Andy Whitcroft
When you say removed these kernels did that involve removing the kernel-
image and the linux-headers for each? The build link seems to come from
the linux-headers package. So could you confirm which were removed and
in which order.

I have just tried this here, removing the image first and then the
headers:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] sudo dpkg -r linux-image-2.6.28-1-ub-generic
[...]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] sudo dpkg -r linux-headers-2.6.28-1-ub-generic
(Reading database ... 171800 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing linux-headers-2.6.28-1-ub-generic ...
dpkg - warning: while removing linux-headers-2.6.28-1-ub-generic, directory
`/lib/modules/2.6.28-1-ub-generic' not empty so not removed.

In my case I have a bunch of module files:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ls /lib/modules/2.6.28-1-ub-generic/
modules.aliasmodules.inputmap modules.pcimapmodules.usbmap
modules.ccwmap modules.isapnpmap modules.seriomap
modules.ieee1394map modules.ofmap modules.symbols

It does appear that the kernel postrm script is not cleaning out all of
the depmod generated files. That would not explain the files reported
by Matt, as he does not have these files too I assume this kernel was
never booted?

[Bug 294932] Re: hardware testing checkboxes are poorly placed

2008-12-04 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma
Yes, this seems like a sensible change. We currently use the natural
language words 'Yes' and 'No' as opposed to the result-centric 'Pass'
and 'Fail', however we might wan to make it more transparent that as
'Yes' will result in a pass. Will this always be the case, or rather can
we commit to insisting that questions should always be formulated in
such a way that it will be the case? If so it might be enough to mention
that in a note at the start of testing. Or perhaps we could use a status
bar that displays 'Yes - Pass', 'No - Fail' and 'Skip - comment
required'.

[Bug 222324] Re: Support for panasonic hotkeys missing

2008-12-04 Thread Nil
Thanks for the efforts, Andy. A backport from Intrepid would be very
nice, indeed.

I tried the proposed kernel images on my Panasonic Y5. It seems to fail,
X can't start. I didn't try the hotkeys from console mode.

Previously, everything was working with gutsy kernel + pcc-acpi-0.9 +
SUSE patches + make/install/modprobe.

Currrently, with the default Intrepid kernel, sound and brightness
hotkeys don't work, but brightness is automatically adjusted (moved
down/up) whether I am on battery or plugged.

For further tests, could you provide the bare module sources for simple
make/install/modprobe tests?

[Bug 271219] Re: Backport GnuPlot 4.2.3 to Hardy

2008-12-04 Thread Tormod Volden
I think debhelper 7 might be a false dependency. I replaced it by 6
and gnuplot 4.2.4 built fine. That is, I had to do another adjustment.
The 3-year-old libedit in Hardy does not have the remove_history
function. The use of remove_history was already ifdef'd so the code
change is minimal, I refreshed the 03_use_libedit.diff so the debdiff is
longer though. The only consequence of this change is that duplicate
entries in the command history are not removed. Test builds are in my
PPA.

What worries me more is a regression in functionality in this newer
upstream version: I can no longer zoom in on a graph by right-clicking.

[Bug 305121] [NEW] Ubuntu sets up a printer automatically but it doesn't work

2008-12-04 Thread Sesivany
Public bug reported:

i bought HP LJ1006. When I plugged it in Ubuntu set it up automatically and
told me that the printer was ready to print. But that wasn't true. Some HP
printers needs proprietary firmware to work. But Ubuntu looked like everything
was OK. That's why I was looking for the problem everywhere but the driver. I
tried a new cabel. I called a HP support etc. After two days of looking for the
solution, I found somewhere on the internet that my printer could be set up
just with hp-setup which downloads proprietary firmware. Then the printer
started working.
In brief: The problem is that Ubuntu says everything is set up and the printer
is ready to print but it's not true and it makes people confused. Because they
can't have an idea where the problem is.

[Bug 188401] Re: OOo extensions (.oxt) only show up as type application/zip

2008-12-04 Thread Gabriel de Perthuis
There is no switch for graphical or noninteractive installation of OOo
extensions:
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=83448

Some extensions are OK, others will ask for a licence in the terminal.
You could associate the mimetype with this command:
sh -c yes yes | LANG=C unopkg add $PATH_TO_OXT
or maybe a command that runs unopkg add in a terminal.

Folks should really put a license file in the .xpi ... otherwise we
need to review each individual file and if there is any that doesnt
have an explicit license hint, its not sure.

We probably can remove preference .js files and install.rdf as well as
chrome.manifest from the list of files that require an explicit
copyright, but most authors forget license headers in .xul/xml files.

[Bug 241331] Re: Running a non-existing command in the background causes exit

2008-12-04 Thread Dariusz B. Tefelski
I confirm.

When you try using xterm - it behaves alike, however it more frequently works
without crash - it prints new pid and after a while it prints bash: gdit:
command not found. It does not return to prompt - you need to press enter and
then it prints Exit 127.
Here:

 gdit
[1] 6733
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ bash: gdit: polecenie nieodnalezione

[1]+ Exit 127gdit
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gdit

I found that gnome-terminal works sometimes without crash - if you try
run some non-existent commands without ampersand and then try it with
ampersand it does not crash.

Maybe it is some buffer issue? And I have seen 'exit' in closing xterm.

[Bug 305126] [NEW] Resume ignored after auto-hibernate

2008-12-04 Thread Cybah
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

1) Description: Ubuntu 8.10
   Release: 8.10

2) gnome-power-manager:
 Installed: 2.24.0-0ubuntu8

3) I expected my laptop to resume/thaw following automatic hibernation.

4) I switched my laptop on and it booted normally, as if it never went
into hibernation (suspend to disc). I allowed the battery to discharge
and watched the popups appear to warn me that the computer would
hibernate within n minutes and eventually that the computer was going to
hibernate. It hibernated automatically and switched off. When I switched
it on again, the laptop didn't restore/thaw.

I checked /var/log/pm-suspend.log (attached) and can see entries for
the hibernate, yet nothing for resume.

I tested a manual hibernate and the laptop resumes without problems.

What can I do to help track down the problem?

2008-12-04 Thread Socrates470BC
@CalcProgrammer:

Using installed version 8.04.1, I managed to copy your xorg.conf file.
I then shutdown the system and rebooted.
Screen now working fine on 8.04.1

I am not sure about updating to 8.10 until I can figure out what is
going on.

Looking at the bottom of the laptop, there appears to be a lot of
screws, and I am not too sure about taking the laptop apart.

Next step is to figure out how to get the Netgear PC Card working (WG511
v2).

I have the initial CD I got from netgear and can locate the WG511v2.INF
file under the drivers/windowsxp directory on the cd.

I found this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=76804

I also read the help info (for Using Windows Wireless Drivers) but could not
find a package called ndisgtk under
System - Administration - Synaptic Package manager.

The good news is that, thanks to you guys for sharing your knowledge, we
have something that works and can build on.

[Bug 120258] Re: Laptop Battery Time Remaining Outrageously Inaccurate

2008-12-04 Thread Sesivany
I think the problem is that gnome-power-manager takes the value from the
battery. For example LiOn batteries tend to report lower times if they
were stressed by higher energy consumption for a short time. I think we
will get more accurate values if gnome-power-manager calculates the
remaining time from the remaining energy and the current consumption (or
weighted average of consumption values for 5, 10, 15 minutes while
lastest value has the highest weight).

[Bug 259708] Re: [intrepid] evolution-2.23.90-0ubuntu1 assertion failure

2008-12-04 Thread Rouven Sacha
Can confirm, that this is still an issue on several intrepid amd64
machines.

Evolution crashes reproducibly when pressing the Choose Today button
in the calndar view. I don't seem to be getting any backtraces - just
the before mentioned error message when i start evo from the console.

is there any way to debug that problem any further?

Confirming issue. What the normal solution for this, wrappable text in a

[Bug 205040] Re: Gossip loses accounts after update to Hardy Heron beta

2008-12-04 Thread Spider
Most probably, I'm not about to install an old version of Ubuntu just to
see if there has been a magical fix of upgrade-path of the package when
you move to a more recent version of Ubuntu. I'd expect that to be the
maintainers job and resources to test.

[Bug 298591] Re: checkbox should include a webcam test

2008-12-04 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma
This might be a good test to write during the UDS tutorial session -
it's usefulness is obvious.

What should it do? Promt the user to install and run Cheese to check
that the webcam works?

[Bug 288332] Re: Impossible to change synaptics touchpad settings

2008-12-04 Thread captaintrav
I can't speak to what is valid in xorg.conf, but I know I need to fix up
xorg.conf to make the touchpad on my Latitude D600 usable in X. If you
add/change xorg.conf as above, make sure you reference the touchpad in
the ServerLayout section as well:

[Bug 305126] Re: Resume ignored after auto-hibernate

2008-12-04 Thread Chris Coulson
This is unlikely to be a gnome-power-manager issue. Could you please run
dmesg dmesg.log after an attempt to resume, and then attach it to
this bug report, as it might give an idea what the problem is.

The chances are that the UUID for your swap partition changed at some
point since your initial install (perhaps you did a mkswap on it?), and
your initramfs hasn't been updated to point at the new UUID.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug.

Could you please attach your /boot/grub/menu.lst to this bug report and
also attach the contents of /var/log/apt?

Re: [Bug 290885] Re: SRU: Backport of Boot Degraded RAID functionality from Intrepid to Hardy

2008-12-04 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Martin-

Would would you think of adding a bit to the grub postinst that
detected if you were upgrading from a certain version, and if you have
root (or /boot) on a RAID device, and if so, run grub-install on that
device?

[Bug 269691] Re: [intrepid] Samsung ML-2010 Printer prints entirely black pages

2008-12-04 Thread Till Kamppeter
Warren Tan, can you please install all updates which came out for
Intrepid and then try again? Please choose the ML-1630 with the SpliX
driver. It should work now.

In Jaunty the ML-1640 is explicitly listed.
