Public bug reported: All devices listed in computer:// location (as well as in filechoosed bookmark list) are using the original English label (for example Floppy Drive for floppy). Those labels should are marked as translatable in hal: for my language, Italian, they are really translated and available in hal.mo file (checked using `msgunfmt /path/to/hal.mo`). [Bug 63408] Re: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font
I found the reason. Fonts (not managed by fontconfig, but only by Xserver) are installed under /usr/share/fonts/X11/ (as well as encondings). The /ect/X11/xorg.conf file instead uses as FontPath the path /usr/share/X11/fonts/. In this path there are the usual 100dpi/ 75dpi/ misc/ and Type1/ directories, but they are empty. [Bug 67112] Odd behavior using Italian translation
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager We (the Ubuntu Italian team) are experiencing a really strange behavior for Update Manager in Edgy with the Italian language. 1. Using the MO file shipped with the latest language pack, the progress dialog after fetching new package should display the string Attendere, l'operazione potrebbe richiedere del tempo But it shows Attendere, loperazione (note the missing '). The original C message is Please wait, this can take some time. 2. I tried to hack this issue using `mgsunfmt` command to re-generate the PO file from the installed MO file, then editing the previous message and finally recreating the MO file using `mgsfmt` comman. After copying the new MO file in /usr/../LC_MESSAGES/update-manager.mo, Update Manager is unable to perform updated. When some updates are available, clicking on Install button Update Manager simply performs the check that it runs on startup, showing the progess dialog labeled as Starting update manager. I'm no longer able to update my system using it, while synaptic and update-notifier can. 3. Restoring the MO file from langpack (using `apt-get --reinstall install`), I can update the system, but the truncated message appears again. ** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Odd behavior using Italian translation https://launchpad.net/bugs/67112 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 51419] Re: Install updates-button only refreshes update list in it_IT environement
Just to clarify what appened to other people: we, the Italian Ubuntu translators, have used the following translation for a message in update-manager: Attendere, l'operazione potrebbe richiedere del tempo Unfortunately this message is passed via command line to synaptic, adding the ' (apostrophe) too. (see bug 67112 for details) This should be the cause of the misbehaving. [Bug 279519] Re: [regression] some usb devices don't works after upgrade to intrepid
Small update on MTP portable mp3 player: the issue seems unrealated with kernel, most problably something in libmtp or libgphoto or gvfs. I suggest so 'cause I logged in my jhbuild GNOME sandbox[1], it tryed to connect my MPT player, a Samsung YP-T10, and it works, either in rhythmbox either in nautilus/gvfs. I'm specifying it's a Samsung YP-T10 'cause in jhbuild sandbox I'm using libmtp 0.3.3 installed under /opt/gnome2; this version has a fix for this specific model. Ubuntu instead provides libmtp 0.3.0. I think could be a good idea update this package in ubuntu due to the lot of fixes (creative players too, see[2]) However, gvfs in jhbuild sandbox is linked against libgphoto provided by Ubuntu system. This is strange: both gvfs installed (/usr from ubuntu packages and /opt/gnome2 from svn) should be able to recongnize, mount and manage the player, but only the jhbuild sandbox works (any ubuntu- only patch against gvfs?) I'll attach a `rhythmbox --debug` dump from both version. In the meantime, could someone try to provide an Ubuntu libmptp package updated to latest version? Please also consider this[1]. It's just a 0.0.1 version, but I think could be a good idea have a cross-distro/cross-desktop framework for admin tasks. It's based on PolicyKit, so you don't have to write custom code for every application (update-manager, jockey...) Also please note that currently users have the ability to use mass storage devices and CD-ROM devices (see Adim-Users Properties Privileges tab), so I think you can jail the privilege escalation just to partitioning and formatting. This is not good for my development/testing purpose, 'cause the session runs mixing settings and code from both GNOME installations, while it should use only settings and code from the one under /opt/gnome2 The only reason I can see for this wrong behavior is the hardcoded /usr/bin path in some files under /etc/X11/Xsession.d directory. [Bug 147668] Re: No way to browse applications' manuals
1. Blindly listing documents by application name without a coherent categorisation means that regular users are just going to stop reading the help and go somewhere else. Matthew, please note that the Advanced Topics document starts with this phrase: The Ubuntu help system contains a lot of documentation, not all of which you see in the table of contents. You can, of course, use the search feature, but as well as you allow to browse man and info pages by category (Advance Topics-Terminal Commands References // Advanced Topics-GNU Info Pages), I think we should allow to browse XML/Docbook manuals by category too. Just a real case example: the Italian GNOME team provides guidelines for Italian translation. I wrote those using XML/Docbook, packed inside a tgz that works like the gnome-user-docs source package: run configure/make/make install and read in Yelp. It's an external and additional document, of course, and it's useful only for Italian translators: there is no interest to merge it in the structure of Ubuntu documentation system. This to explain that the GNOME help system can be used to provide more then application manual. So, IMHO, hiding the index for XML/Docbook documents is a bad idea: it should be available near the man in info index. You can of course use a different default approach to help users to browse, but any documentation system needs an index. 2. Quite a lot of the documents listed in the standard yelp indexes are totally irrelevant to the vast majority of desktop users and confuse them rather than assist them (e.g. GNOME Documentation XSLT Manual). This is a different issue, not related to provide an index for XML/Docbook. Could be solved in deb package build, splitting doc stuff. However, note also that XSTL manual is listed under Other documents category, the proper category for other stuff: if you are browsing here, you should know that you can find odd stuff :-) And just to note that both the major Gnome manuals (accessibility guide and user guide) are incorporated into the layout. The Accessibility guide now has its own entry. system-admin-guide guide seems still out to me. As well as manuals from the new gnome-devel-docs module. maybe this is not yet included in Ubuntu, but it provide useful sfuff: an overview of GNOME Desktop for developers, the HIG, the style guide for manuals and a simple guide to integrate non-GNOME apps in GNOME Desktop (application menu, mime type, icons...) If there are specific pages which you believe should be included in the current setup, and aren't, please file a bug on ubuntu-docs. I could like something like the attached HTML for Advance Topics page (note the All Installed Manuals section, come from my previous considerations); links should open related pages on standard gutsy system, except stuff from gnome-devel-docs (platform-overview and hig- book). But it's too late for gutsy, so I'll propose it in the next 6 months. ** Attachment added: My personal view of Advanced Topics page http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10048334/advanced-topics.html -- No way to browse applications' manuals https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147668 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 159016] Unable to change Name for .desktop files using X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain
Public bug reported: The GNOME Desktop provides (in Alacarte) the ability to change the name for applications menu entries. This featore follows the desktop file spec from freedesktop.org. I suppose that current implementation of X -Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain key breaks the spec. Example: * Open Alacarte (right click on panel menubar - Edit menu) * Select System-Prefences menu on menus list * Righ click on Bluetooth Preferences on entries list * Choose Properties A dialog will appear, allowing you to change the name for this entry. Let's assume you want to rename it Bluetooth 'cause Preferences is just an unuseful repetition. Change the text in Name entry and click Close RESULTS -- the name for menu entry is unchanged EXPECTED -- the name for menu entry should change to Bluetooth (this is how works on upstream GNOME Desktop) Please note that Alacarte thinks that the name is changed: the Revert original menu item right clicking on the entry in list is now available. I think the reason of this behavior is related to X-Ubuntu-Gettext- Domain addition. Note that performing above steps, Alacarte will simply create a new .desktop file with the same filename under $XDG_HOME_DIR/applications: due to desktop file spec from freedesktop, this file should override the one under /usr/share/applications It seems like that the name and the comment grabbed through X-Ubuntu- Gettext-Domain will be always used, even you manually changed them with above steps. I think you need to fix X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain: ignore it if the .desktop file is in $XDG_HOME_DIR/applications could be a start point; ignore it if a translation for current locale is yet availabe (both in /usr or $XDG_HOME_DIR) could be another solution. Oh, as a proof that X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain is the cause of this mis- behavior, try to edit a menu entry that don't use it, for example menu entries for Emacs or any application available in universe repository: ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Unable to change Name for .desktop files using X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/159016 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 152453] Double clic on .gtp (GNOME Theme Package) files should install them
Public bug reported: GNOME Control Centrer provides a new MIME type (from 2.18, if I'm right) for theme packages. This MIME type is called application/x-gnome-theme- package and it matches to a simple .tar.gz file with the extension changed to .gtp. The XML definition for new MIME is installed as /usr/share/mime/packages/gnome-theme-package.xml Now, in a proper installation of gnome-control-center (at least in my GNOME upstream installation under /opt/ using jhbuild), double clicking on a .gtp file should install its content in $HOME/.themes and $HOME/.icons, and should open the Appearance capplet allowing you to select the newly installed theme. On Gutsy, when I double click on .gtp theme, it's opened in File Roller, reporting an error on unknown/unmanaged file type It seems that both /usr/share/mime/packages/gnome-theme-package.xml (the MIME type definition) and /usr/share/applications/gnome-theme- installer.desktop (the MIME-application association) are propertly installed, so I've no idea (maybe not updated stuff on upgrade from Feisty?) ** Affects: control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Double clic on .gtp (GNOME Theme Package) files should install them https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/152453 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 357678] Re: event time cannot be specified any more
Based on heuristic investigation from me and Milo Casagrande, this issue is relate to a change I applied in Italian translation in 2.26 cycle. The change was replace the conversion specificator %k formatter for hours with %-H. Please note that %k is not a supported specificator by stfrtime[1], it should be a GNU/glibc extension or similar; its usage was avoided in similar context, such as eel and/or nautilus translations. The dialog provided by gnome-session (try running `gnome-session-save --shutdown-dialog`) shows more info to the users (both icon and action explanation). The indicator-applet-session could take advantage of this feature: 1) will reduce the number of menu items (currently 9: it's between 3 and 15, suggested by GNOME HIG, but less menu items means more readability) 2) will reduce the code to maintain (all code to confirm action is yet in gnome-session, why should we reply here?) 3) will help user to understand the meaning of each action ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 Date: Fri Oct 9 21:39:48 2009 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10 NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx Package: indicator-applet-session 0.2.0-0ubuntu1 ProcEnviron: LANG=it_IT.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-11.38-generic SourcePackage: indicator-applet Uname: Linux 2.6.31-11-generic i686 ** Affects: indicator-applet (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 -- No description for hibernate and suspend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/447529 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
