[Bug 63605] Unable to create indexes for applications and documentation updating from dapper to edgy

2006-10-02 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: beagle

After the update from dapper to edgy, beagle don't list the entries for
applications and documentations, not stored in user's home.

Searching in beagle logs I found those messages:

Debug: Reading mapping from filters
Debug: Loading system static indexes.
Debug: Version mismatch in /var/cache/beagle/indexes/applications
Debug: Index has version 14.0, expected 15.-1
Warn: Unable to create read-only index (likely due to index version mismatch):
/var/cache/beagle/indexes/applications
Debug: Version mismatch in /var/cache/beagle/indexes/documentation
Debug: Index has version 14.0, expected 15.-1
Warn: Unable to create read-only index (likely due to index version mismatch):
/var/cache/beagle/indexes/documentation

I suspect this is a post-[install,uninstall] related issue: the old
package should remove the index, the new package should create a new one

[Bug 63612] No translation for devices in computer:// location

2006-10-02 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

All devices listed in computer:// location (as well as in filechoosed
bookmark list) are using the original English label (for example Floppy
Drive for floppy).

Those labels should are marked as translatable in hal: for my language,
Italian, they are really translated and available in hal.mo file
(checked using `msgunfmt /path/to/hal.mo`).

Unfortunately it seems that hal.mo is not in opened files for nautilus
binary (see attached screenshot)

[Bug 63408] Re: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font

2006-10-05 Thread Luca Ferretti
I found the reason.

Fonts (not managed by fontconfig, but only by Xserver) are installed
under /usr/share/fonts/X11/ (as well as encondings). The
/ect/X11/xorg.conf file instead uses as FontPath the path
/usr/share/X11/fonts/. In this path there are the usual 100dpi/ 75dpi/
misc/ and Type1/ directories, but they are empty.

Running a 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg' can't help :-(

[Bug 66869] Double click on Floppy Drive in Computer location jumps to / directory

2006-10-19 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

## Steps to Reproduce ##
Try to mount and browse a floppy disk:
 1. Put a floppy disk in your floppy drive
 2. Open the Computer location in browser window
 3. Double click on Floppy Drive icon

## Current Behavior ##
The floppy disk is mounted, then nautilus (browser) jump to / (root) directory.

## Expected Behavior ##
Nautilus should jump to the mountpoint for floppy disk (/media/floppy) when the
disk is mounted.

## Additional Info ##
If you disable the automount for CD/DVD and try to do the same to mount and
view the CD/DVD disk contents, it works fine.

## Severity ##
High, IMHO. This is a really really bad behavior for unexepienced users: they
expects to browse the selected item, not another location.

## Thanks ##
My mum, she discovered it while I wasn't at home. She thinks I've hacked
something to annoy her

[Bug 67112] Odd behavior using Italian translation

2006-10-20 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

We (the Ubuntu Italian team) are experiencing a really strange behavior
for Update Manager in Edgy with the Italian language.

1. Using the MO file shipped with the latest language pack, the progress
dialog after fetching new package should display the string

Attendere, l'operazione potrebbe richiedere del tempo

But it shows

   Attendere, loperazione

(note the missing '). The original C message is Please wait, this can
take some time.

2. I tried to hack this issue using `mgsunfmt` command to re-generate
the PO file from the installed MO file, then editing the previous
message and finally recreating the MO file using `mgsfmt` comman.

After copying the new MO file in /usr/../LC_MESSAGES/update-manager.mo,
Update Manager is unable to perform updated. When some updates are
available, clicking on Install button Update Manager simply performs
the check that it runs on startup, showing the progess dialog labeled as
Starting update manager. I'm no longer able to update my system using
it, while synaptic and update-notifier can.

3. Restoring the MO file from langpack (using `apt-get --reinstall
install`), I can update the system, but the truncated message appears
again.

Downloaded the source code. The msgid is here

### code
def run_synaptic(self, id, action, lock):
try:

except SystemError:

cmd = [gksu, --desktop,
/usr/share/applications/update-manager.desktop,
   --, /usr/sbin/synaptic, --hide-main-window,
   --non-interactive, --parent-window-id, %s % (id) ]
if action == INSTALL:
  cmd.append(--progress-str)
cmd.append(%s % _(Please wait, this can take some time.))
  cmd.append(--finish-str)
  cmd.append(%s % _(Update is complete))
  f = tempfile.NamedTemporaryFile()
  for pkg in self.cache:
  if pkg.markedInstall or pkg.markedUpgrade:

  cmd.append(%s % f.name)
  f.flush()
  subprocess.call(cmd)
  f.close()

[Bug 51419] Re: Install updates-button only refreshes update list in it_IT environement

2006-10-25 Thread Luca Ferretti
Just to clarify what appened to other people: we, the Italian Ubuntu
translators, have used the following translation for a message in
update-manager:

Attendere, l'operazione potrebbe richiedere del tempo

Unfortunately this message is passed via command line to synaptic,
adding the ' (apostrophe) too. (see bug 67112 for details)

This should be the cause of the misbehaving.

Wating for the upstream fix, the message was changed, removing the '
(s/l'operazione/questo), so the next langpack update should also fix the
misbehavior. I'll report on it.

I beg your pardon!

[Bug 62982] GConf schemas not installed

Public bug reported:

I updated my Ubuntu-box from dapper to edgy. Now all my nautilus Gconf
keys are disappeared from gconf-editor. The only key still available is
/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_special_flags

I'm able to change Nautilus behavior using its preferences window: the
key/value changed in preferences will appear in gconf-editor, but
selecting it, in documentation pane of gconf-editor appear the warning
message This key has no schema.

I noticed this due to the switch to close window after double click on
folder behavior using spatial interface after the upgrade to edgy. I
dislike this behavior so I tried to change it in gconf-editor.

I tried to reinstall nautilus and gconf2 packages (apt-get --reinstall

On my system, this don't occur, GVFS seems to ignore the device. Note
that this is not a libgphoto issue. In fact, the `gphoto2` program is
able to recognize and manage the device, see attached output.

[Bug 285406] [NEW] Better GNOME HIG compliance

2008-10-18 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

Ubuntu Version: 8.10
Package Version: 0.1.9

There are currently several HIG violations in usb-creators (at least
simply checking the glade file and quickly scrubbing the code).

 * warning/info/error alerts don't respect spaging, alignent, button labels,
text labels, title and other stuff
 * main dialog don't respect alignmet, spacing, suggested layout for frames and
separators, accelerators

You can check both here[1] and here[2]

Here is attached a quick edit of existing glade file with suggested changes.
Unfortunately some widget names was breaked by my glade-3 so you can use it in
code :-( I'll try to manually rename them in the next days.

PS however could be a good idea switch from glade to GtkBuilder, but I
ignore current pygtk support to it

[Bug 285406] Re: Better GNOME HIG compliance

2008-10-18 Thread Luca Ferretti
A small update, now as well behaving working patch.

Changed from previous glade mochup:
+ fixed widget IDs, now it works (at least the main window is showed)
+ used USB thumb drive as in gvfs/hal (is it ok? or simply USB drive?)
+ increased the minimum vertical width of treeviews (HIG says you should have
at least 4 rows)
 + fixed expand in titles
+ used drive-harddisk as window icon (just a placehoder..)

Missing
 - a secondary label for confirm exit alert
 - check at runtime (I've to cleanup my usb thumb drive..)

Ideas
 * grey out the target_vbox widget if no source is added

[Bug 279519] Re: [regression] some usb devices don't works after upgrade to intrepid

2008-10-16 Thread Luca Ferretti
Small update on MTP portable mp3 player: the issue seems unrealated with
kernel, most problably something in libmtp or libgphoto or gvfs.

I suggest so 'cause I logged in my jhbuild GNOME sandbox[1], it tryed to
connect my MPT player, a Samsung YP-T10, and it works, either in
rhythmbox either in nautilus/gvfs.

I'm specifying it's a Samsung YP-T10 'cause in jhbuild sandbox I'm using
libmtp 0.3.3 installed under /opt/gnome2; this version has a fix for
this specific model. Ubuntu instead provides libmtp 0.3.0. I think could
be a good idea update this package in ubuntu due to the lot of fixes
(creative players too, see[2])

However, gvfs in jhbuild sandbox is linked against libgphoto provided by
Ubuntu system. This is strange: both gvfs installed (/usr from ubuntu
packages and /opt/gnome2 from svn) should be able to recongnize, mount
and manage the player, but only the jhbuild sandbox works (any ubuntu-
only patch against gvfs?)

I'll attach a `rhythmbox --debug` dump from both version. In the
meantime, could someone try to provide an Ubuntu libmptp package updated
to latest version?

A little note about my previous message: unpluggin the MPT player and
pluggin in again while in jhbuild session (/opt/gnome2), the device goes
in proper USB conncted mode too, and don't taint the USB subsystem
as in ubuntu (/usr). So any related issue seems fixed just using a
different libmtp or gvfs...

[Bug 273483] Re: Use policykit

2008-10-25 Thread Luca Ferretti
Please also consider this[1]. It's just a 0.0.1 version, but I think
could be a good idea have a cross-distro/cross-desktop framework for
admin tasks. It's based on PolicyKit, so you don't have to write custom
code for every application (update-manager, jockey...)

Also please note that currently users have the ability to use mass
storage devices and CD-ROM devices (see Adim-Users Properties
Privileges tab), so I think you can jail the privilege escalation just
to partitioning and formatting.

[Bug 286924] Re: Create a USB startup disk menu entry should be named USB startup disk creator

2008-10-25 Thread Luca Ferretti
Applying the patch, the .desktop file will use:
 Name=USB Startup Disk Creator
 GenericName=USB Startup Disk Creator
Comment=Create a USB startup disk using a CD or disc image

IMHO:
 * disk vs disc - the usb mass storage devices are referred as thumb drives
or USB drives in GVFS or ; better use disc (not disk, at least this seems
the convention in GNOME and HAL) only for removable media like CD/DVD. See
gvfs/monitor/hal/hal-utils.c and gvfs/monitor/hal/ghaldrive.c

 * USB - we really need to have this (technical) info in name? See GNOME
HIG about this.

 * Creator - note that the button in dialog is Make, not Create

 * the Name entry should be short, really short. Any further info can be
placed in Comment

So, maybe, something like (not perfect, just different from current)
 Name/GenericName=Startup Drive Maker
Comment=Set up USB thumb drives to store and start up a working Ubuntu system
and even personal data

[Bug 275138] Re: use the name USB flash drive instead of USB stick

2008-10-25 Thread Luca Ferretti
GVFS (and maybe HAL) is using thumb drive or USB drive. Disc is for
stuff like CD or DVD.

See code in gvfs/monitor/hal/ghaldrive.c and, if i remember well, search
on nautilus mailing list for a David Zeuther mail with him research
about names to use.

Besides the wikipedia statement By August 2008, USB flash drive or
simply UFD had emerged as a de facto standard term for these devices
don't seems to me really trustworthy, note the [citation need]...

[Bug 274461] Re: gnome-system-monitor window is semi-transparent when using compiz

2008-10-25 Thread Luca Ferretti
To be honest, gnome-terminal supports rgba too (well, the only non-
console widget in gnome-terminal, i.e. the menubar)

For more info about reasons, status, and future or RGBA in gtk+ and
Murrine, see also

http://www.cimitan.com/blog/2007/12/12/gtk-rgba-transparent-widgets-with-the-murrine-engine/

http://www.cimitan.com/blog/2008/02/17/rgba-colormap-by-default-in-gtk-call-for-a-coder/

About Ubuntu, the Artwork Team have to choose: enable RGBA in Human
theme or not. If enabled, only applications supporting this feature will
be semi-transient.

It's not a bug, it's not a feature. It's a cabapility of GTK+ libraries
that applications and theme engines can use. Most probably GTK+ 3 will
normalize the usage of this feature for all GNOME apps.

In the mean time how can I re-enable transparency in the ubuntu theme?
thanks

Open /usr/share/themes/Human/gtk-2.0/gtkrc , find rgba option and
change its value from FALSE to TRUE.

Same for all other Murrine based themes.

[Bug 279519] Re: [regression] some usb devices don't works after upgrade to intrepid

2008-10-26 Thread Luca Ferretti
Update on Ubuntu 8.10 RC - MTP player

## MTP player ##
Currently my Samsung YP-T10 is recognized by Rhythmbox, i'm able to copy music
on it, remove files, and no longer taints the USB subsystem (I can un-plug it
and re-plug, and it's in USB Connected mode again). I didn't tried to copy
music files from player to Rhythmbox library.

Remaining issues are:
 * gvfs' gphoto2 backend should recognize and mount it (should I file this as
separate bug?)
 * Rhythmbox lists video files (I'll file as separate bug).

Of course, could be interesting test the system with latest libmtp...
Do you need `lsusb -v` and `lshal` output?

## WebCam ##
Partially working.
 * strange pixelated images
 * square aspect ratio, not rectangular

## Bluethoot Dongle ##
I can perform the bonding but I can neither send/receive files from/to devices,
nor connect and browse them. Also ubuntu can see see devices, but devices can't
see ubuntu...

Moreover, 'cause PolicyKit allow you to provide task based policies, IMHO could

I know, we have automatically install security updates option, but
PolicyKit scope is allowing some users to do some tasks under certain

[Bug 172270] Include TIresias fonts family in next release

Public bug reported:

I just received word (see attached) that the Tiresias family of fonts,
designed by the Royal National Institute for the Blind for clarity and
ease of recognition by folks with vision impairments are now available
under GPL v3. The family includes fonts recommended and tested for use
in signage, print, television, and computer use (the latter is PCFont
- see http://www.tiresias.org/fonts/pcfont/about_pc.htm for details).

I would like to recommend we consider redistributing these fonts with
GNOME (or at least link to them so that UNIX distros that include GNOME
might become aware of and potentially include this font).

Update: on seahorse svn was just applied a patch that lets you to start

.desktol file in /etc/xdg/autostart directory). See

features.

This means that in next seahorse releases there is no need to use
Xsession.d to launch the agent.

[Bug 114762] Wrong protocol in xorg.conf for Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000

2007-05-15 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

On a fresh Feisty Fawn install on a system with MS Comfort Optical Mouse
3000 installed, in xorg.conf I've

 Option Protocol ImPS/2

Based on my past experience, the ExplorerPS/2 protocol should be
better for this device, 'cause it should be able to support the extra
red button (Button9). By now I've to restart X in order to check if my
assertion is true, so I'll add a confirm later.

2007-05-15 Thread Luca Ferretti
Confirmed: using ExplorerPS/2 protocol the red button on mouse is
mapped as Button9 (allowing you to use it in Compiz key
/apps/compiz/plugins/zoom/allscreens/options/initiate_button).
Otherwise, using ImPS/2 protocol the red button is mapped as Button2
(right button on right hand setup)

[Bug 112106] Hardcoded /usr/bin in Xsession.d files makes jhbuild sessions to fail

2007-05-03 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

Tried to launch the GNOME 2.19 session installed using jhbuild under
/opt/gnome2, many autostart services and deamons (dbus-daemon,
seahorse-agent, gnome-settings-daemon, gconfd-2, gnome-vfs-daemon...)
are started using the binaries installed by Ubuntu package under
/usr/bin instead using the binaries under /opt/gnome2/bin.

This is not good for my development/testing purpose, 'cause the session
runs mixing settings and code from both GNOME installations, while it
should use only settings and code from the one under /opt/gnome2

The only reason I can see for this wrong behavior is the hardcoded
/usr/bin path in some files under /etc/X11/Xsession.d directory. For
example, in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/60seahorse is:

# This file is sourced by Xsession(5), not executed.

SEAHORSE=/usr/bin/seahorse-agent
if [ -x $SEAHORSE ]; then
STARTUP=$SEAHORSE --execute $STARTUP
fi

Same occurs for 55gnome-session_gnomerc and 75dbus_dbus-launch files in
the same directory.

I'll try to remove this hardcode path.

Further info:
  * jhbuild sandbox was installed following info on
http://live.gnome.org/JhbuildOnUbuntu
  * it always worked fine on dapper and edgy, I'm experiencing this issue now
in feisty

2007-05-03 Thread Luca Ferretti
I removed /usr/bin from 75dbus_dbus-launch and 60seahorse and now the
jhbuild session goes fine.

I don't know if this is the real issue, but it's really annoying for
GNOME developers using Ubuntu as base distro :-(

Please fix it.

[Bug 147668] Re: No way to browse applications' manuals

2007-10-16 Thread Luca Ferretti
 1. Blindly listing documents by application name without a coherent
categorisation means that regular users are just going to stop reading
the help and go somewhere else.

Matthew, please note that the Advanced Topics document starts with
this phrase: The Ubuntu help system contains a lot of documentation,
not all of which you see in the table of contents. You can, of course,
use the search feature, but as well as you allow to browse man and info
pages by category (Advance Topics-Terminal Commands References //
Advanced Topics-GNU Info Pages), I think we should allow to browse
XML/Docbook manuals by category too.

Just a real case example: the Italian GNOME team provides guidelines for
Italian translation. I wrote those using XML/Docbook, packed inside a
tgz that works like the gnome-user-docs source package: run
configure/make/make install and read in Yelp. It's an external and
additional document, of course, and it's useful only for Italian
translators: there is no interest to merge it in the structure of Ubuntu
documentation system. This to explain that the GNOME help system can be
used to provide more then application manual.

So, IMHO, hiding the index for XML/Docbook documents is a bad idea: it
should be available near the man in info index. You can of course use a
different default approach to help users to browse, but any
documentation system needs an index.

 2. Quite a lot of the documents listed in the standard yelp indexes
are totally irrelevant to the vast majority of desktop users and
confuse them rather than assist them (e.g. GNOME Documentation XSLT
 Manual).

This is a different issue, not related to provide an index for
XML/Docbook. Could be solved in deb package build, splitting doc stuff.
However, note also that XSTL manual is listed under Other documents
category, the proper category for other stuff: if you are browsing
here, you should know that you can find odd stuff :-)

And just to note that both the major Gnome manuals (accessibility
guide and user guide) are incorporated into the layout. The
Accessibility guide now has its own entry.

system-admin-guide guide seems still out to me.

As well as manuals from the new gnome-devel-docs module. maybe this is
not yet included in Ubuntu, but it provide useful sfuff: an overview of
GNOME Desktop for developers, the HIG, the style guide for manuals and a
simple guide to integrate non-GNOME apps in GNOME Desktop (application
menu, mime type, icons...)

If there are specific pages which you believe should be included in the
current setup, and aren't, please file
 a bug on ubuntu-docs.

I could like something like the attached HTML for Advance Topics page
(note the All Installed Manuals section, come from my previous
considerations); links should open related pages on standard gutsy
system, except stuff from gnome-devel-docs (platform-overview and hig-
book).

But it's too late for gutsy, so I'll propose it in the next 6 months.

[Bug 147668] No way to browse applications' manuals

2007-10-01 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

In Yelp (gutsy) I can't find a way to browse all installed manuals. This
meas, for example, that users will have to start an application in order
to open and read the inline help, as well as accessibilty and system
admin guide from gnome-user-docs package are virtually inaccessible
(unless finding links in other manuals or manually opening using
ghelp:gnome2-accessibility-guide).

A solution to this could be provide a link to original (upstream) Yelp's
topic page somewhere, for example under Advanced Topics document.

dependance to fix similar issue.

Could be the same here?

Also note that the upstream Italian translation of gnome-screensaver is

in my gutsy and/or launcpad. So I suspect the issue is in non updated

[Bug 159016] Unable to change Name for .desktop files using X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain

2007-10-31 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

The GNOME Desktop provides (in Alacarte) the ability to change the name
for applications menu entries. This featore follows the desktop file
spec from freedesktop.org. I suppose that current implementation of X
-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain key breaks the spec.

Example:
  * Open Alacarte (right click on panel menubar - Edit menu)
  * Select System-Prefences menu on menus list
  * Righ click on Bluetooth Preferences on entries list
  * Choose Properties

A dialog will appear, allowing you to change the name for this entry.
Let's assume you want to rename it Bluetooth 'cause Preferences is
just an unuseful repetition. Change the text in Name entry and click
Close

RESULTS -- the name for menu entry is unchanged
EXPECTED -- the name for menu entry should change to Bluetooth (this is how
works on upstream GNOME Desktop)

Please note that Alacarte thinks that the name is changed: the Revert
original menu item right clicking on the entry in list is now
available.

I think the reason of this behavior is related to X-Ubuntu-Gettext-
Domain addition. Note that performing above steps, Alacarte will simply
create a new .desktop file with the same filename under
$XDG_HOME_DIR/applications: due to desktop file spec from freedesktop,
this file should override the one under /usr/share/applications

It seems like that the name and the comment grabbed through X-Ubuntu-
Gettext-Domain will be always used, even you manually changed them with
above steps.

I think you need to fix X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain: ignore it if the
.desktop file is in $XDG_HOME_DIR/applications could be a start point;
ignore it if a translation for current locale is yet availabe (both in
/usr or $XDG_HOME_DIR) could be another solution.

Oh, as a proof that X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain is the cause of this mis-
behavior, try to edit a menu entry that don't use it, for example menu
entries for Emacs or any application available in universe repository:

Dean, not 75dbus-launch, but 75dbus_dbus-launch. It's in Gutsy installed

A note about seahorse: it Ubuntu is using Xsession.d just to launch

This will also allow users to disable its launch using Session capplet.

[Bug 152453] Double clic on .gtp (GNOME Theme Package) files should install them

2007-10-13 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

GNOME Control Centrer provides a new MIME type (from 2.18, if I'm right)
for theme packages. This MIME type is called application/x-gnome-theme-
package and it matches to a simple .tar.gz file with the extension
changed to .gtp. The XML definition for new MIME is installed as
/usr/share/mime/packages/gnome-theme-package.xml

Now, in a proper installation of gnome-control-center (at least in my
GNOME upstream installation under /opt/ using jhbuild), double clicking
on a .gtp file should install its content in $HOME/.themes and
$HOME/.icons, and should open the Appearance capplet allowing you to
select the newly installed theme.

On Gutsy, when I double click on .gtp theme, it's opened in File Roller,
reporting an error on unknown/unmanaged file type

It seems that both /usr/share/mime/packages/gnome-theme-package.xml (the
MIME type definition) and /usr/share/applications/gnome-theme-
installer.desktop (the MIME-application association) are propertly
installed, so I've no idea (maybe not updated stuff on upgrade from
Feisty?)

[Bug 357678] Re: event time cannot be specified any more

2009-04-16 Thread Luca Ferretti
Based on heuristic investigation from me and Milo Casagrande, this
issue is relate to a change I applied in Italian translation in 2.26
cycle.

The change was replace the conversion specificator %k formatter for
hours with %-H. Please note that %k is not a supported specificator by
stfrtime[1], it should be a GNU/glibc extension or similar; its usage
was avoided in similar context, such as eel and/or nautilus
translations.

So, while I'm not sure the real issue is in %k usage, I've reverted its
usage in e-d-s translation for jaunty[2]. Could be great provide a new
langpack to test it, as well as make it available for Jaunty final
relase.

Everything works fine, but Audio Preferences tool show it in Hardware
tab using camera-photo named icon instead camera-web. Screenshot

[Bug 506029] [NEW] Wrong appearance for non-printing characters using Garamond font

2010-01-11 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I've to use a special font, Garamond, in some documents I've to produce
for my employer. This because the document I'm editing needs to have the
best print preview avalable. Moreover, as text editor, I need to check
for stuff like double spaces and similar: this means I've to enable the
show non printing characters features.

Unfortunately the middle dot used to show spaces is aligned for
Garamond font on the right side of the space, placed in the top-left
corner on the following character. See attached screenshot.

Please note that this issue is related to this specific font and
OpenOffice rendering of non printing characters. Other word processors,
like Abiword or Microsoft Word, don't show this issue.

PS the Garamond font is copyrighted by Monotype Typography, Ltd, so I
think I'm not allowed to attach here for further tests :(

2010-01-11 Thread Luca Ferretti

Sorry for the bad phrasing: there are several Garamond-based fonts
available, see for example
http://www.fonts.com/AboutFonts/Articles/IlluminatingLetters/Garamond.htm

The one I'm using is the one from Monotype Typography, a.k.a. Monotype
Garamond. From previous link, it's described as:
The Monotype Garamond design – another relative of Benton’s 1919 revival – is
one of the most elegant interpretations of the Garamond style. Its marked
contrast in stroke weights, open counters and delicate serifs make this the
Gwyneth Paltrow of the Garamond family. It can be set at virtually any size and
is exceptionally legible. In addition, the contrast between the roman and bold
weights is ideal

[Bug 451974] Re: Black video minimizing Totem window

2009-12-11 Thread Luca Ferretti
Yes, it still persists with 9.10 updated yesterday to latest available.

An additional (maybe unuseful) note: the no-video occurs on AVi files on
first minimizing action (i.e. minimize - restore - black video),
instead on second action with OGV files (i.e. minimize - restore -
video - minimize - restore - black video).

[Bug 451974] Re: Black video minimizing Totem window

2009-12-11 Thread Luca Ferretti
Fine, here are some results. It seems the issue is related to XVideo
extension and Compiz.

Window Manager Compiz

  - Totem[1] (using ximagesink) - no issue
  - Totem (using xvimagesink or autovideosink) - issue
  - Totem (using xvimagesink device=0[2]) - issue
  - VLC (XV output in prefs) - issue
  - VLC (X11 output in prefs) - no issue
  - VLC (ascii art output) - no issue
  - mplayer -vo gl|gl2|x11 - no issue
  - mplayer -vo xv - issue (BTW it's the default one when no -vo is provided)

Window Manager Metacity

All applications work fine with any video output.

I could perfom more tests using free Ati driver, but I can't enable
Compiz with them, so I suppose it's not useful.

[Bug 442121] Re: Media player Samsung YP-T10 recognized as photo camera

2009-10-10 Thread Luca Ferretti
Does Ubuntu 9.04 count as other Linux distribution? ;)

As I said, it was properly recognized as music player (i.e. the icon showed in
computer:// and on desktop is multimedia-player and the nautilus
what-do-you-want-to-do-with-this-media dialog proposes to use Rhythmbox) in
9.04 (and maybe 8.10, I don't remember now).
Karmic, instead, uses camera-photo icon and proposes to open it in F-Spot.

And, yes, it's a MTP device, and libgphoto should recognize it. See here[1]
  { Samsung, 0x04e8, YP-T10, 0x508a, DEVICE_FLAG_OGG_IS_UNKNOWN |
DEVICE_FLAG_BROKEN_MTPGETOBJPROPLIST },

Maybe in Jaunty there was some HAL magic?

[Bug 440903] Re: Alias in ~/.fonts.conf ignored

2009-10-08 Thread Luca Ferretti
Alexander, the issue still exists in my Karmik test install. It's a
fresh install in a separate partition, I simply copied .fonts.conf
attacched in my previous comment from stable home partition (not used
in test install).

So I think this bug is still open. Please check on a clean karmic
install before closing it againt, installing Droid font package and
using the file I provided before. Sans should automatically pick up
(after logout+login) Droid Sans instead DejaVu/Bitstream Sans.

[Bug 420609] Re: wrong LC_TIME in Italian

2009-10-09 Thread Luca Ferretti
Nicolò, I've seen your proposed a patch againg eglibc upstream, just a couple
of questions:
 1) did you compared the locale data for it_IT (and it_CH, of course) provided
by eglibc with the one in glibc? any difference? in case, any hope to
backport the patch/fix from eglibc to glibc?
 2) there is another long date issue in those locale date for Italian: the
usage of : in time specification. It's a common misbehavior, the historical
separator is the . (BTW, note that it should be, for example,
20.13.21,965182530, not 20.13.21.965182530). Could you please update your
patch accordly?

[Bug 447529] [NEW] No description for hibernate and suspend

2009-10-09 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

There is no help or tip about the difference between Suspend and
Hibernate action. Plus, those actions are immediately applied, no need
to confirm them (and so, no explanation about effects).

This seems a bad design choice. The dialog provided by gnome-session (try
running `gnome-session-save --shutdown-dialog`) shows more info to the users
(both icon and action explanation). The indicator-applet-session could take
advantage of this feature:
 1) will reduce the number of menu items (currently 9: it's between 3 and 15,
suggested by GNOME HIG, but less menu items means more readability)
 2) will reduce the code to maintain (all code to confirm action is yet in
gnome-session, why should we reply here?)
 3) will help user to understand the meaning of each action
