[Bug 665865] [NEW] Rhythmbox imports (some) videos and plays them

2010-10-24 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Ubuntu Release: 10.10
Rhythmbox version: 0.13.1-0ubuntu5

Hello,

I have various video files in my Music folder, for instance music videos
or live footage ripped from some album's bonus CD or DVD or downloaded
form the Internet.

To my surprise, this version of Rhythmbox imports some of them in the
music library, but not all of them. In the attached screenshot you can
see five FLV videos downloaded from the Internet and listed by Rhythmbox
in the music library (with Unknown as Genre / Artist / Album, quite
understandably). All other videos in my Music folder are not recognized.
At first I suspected Rhythmbox importing videos or not was a matter of
container format and/or audio-video codecs, but I have examples of files
in the same format and codecs, one of them being imported but the other
not, so I have no idea of a possible interpretation.

Then, to my utmost surprise, Rhythmbox plays these videos! I found out
that when the Visualization plug-in is enabled, Rhythmbox plays the
video flawlessly in an external window (see attached screenshot)
(restarting Rhythmbox seems necessary, though), and when this plug-in is
disabled, Rhythmbox plays only the audio, with the position slider not
working as it should, i.e. it runs quickly to the right and then stops
at the end while the remaining audio is read (always at normal speed).

During video playback, Rhythmbox controls work as expected (pause,
previous/next, moving the slider). If the Visualization button is
clicked, the external window is docked into Rhythmbox (like a
visualization). If it is clicked again, the external window does not pop
out, the visualization disappears but the audio keeps playing.

One more quirk: if I close the video window during playback, the video
that was played disappears from the music library to go in the Missing
Files section, with the error Output window was closed (see attached
screenshot). The next time I start Rhythmbox, these errors are gone and
the videos are back in the music library.

So... From perusing the bug archives, I understand that Rhythmbox,
although not a video player or video library manager, has some video
podcast abilities through the Visualization plug-in, so perhaps the five
video files it lists are recognized as downloaded video podcasts (they
are not, as far as I know)? I appreciate that Rhythmbox lists and plays
them, but would be even more delighted if it listed and played all the
video files in my Music folder, not just these arbitrary five.

To sum it up:
1. What I expected to happen: as far as I know, Rhythmbox is not supposed to
list video files in the music library, let alone play them.
2. What happened instead: Rhythmbox imported and played videos, but only some
of them, and with a few quirks.

Shall I run Apport? It leaves me with a choice of ill-suited options:
The rhythmbox interface is not working correctly
  No sound is being played
Some audio files are not being played correctly
The Ubuntu One Music Store is not working correctly

Shall I report this bug upstream? (In Gnome Bugzilla, in'nit?)

Shall I attach an example of video that gets recognized and an example
of video that does not?

[Bug 548846] Re: in netbook remix, emacs23 but not emacs22 sizes wrongly in initial full-screen opening

2010-10-24 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
Emacs23.2 from ppa:ubuntu-elisp has a much smaller window than Emacs23.1
shipped with Ubuntu 10.10. I guess this is because of a much smaller
font size.

Upgrading to this version solved my problem of having the mode line off
the bottom of my screen (1440x900), a problem reported by Kalman in bug
#622246, a duplicate of this bug (although I am not sure it should
really be marked as a duplicate).

I am not using Ubuntu Network Edition though, but it may be worth a try
for people using it too.

This bug is still present in Firefox 17.0.1. I have no idea why it has

could do to help troubleshoot it.

Could the other person affected by this bug also report it upstream in
Firefox's Bugzilla bug report (link above)? Thanks.

2012-11-19 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
Is there any chance for this bug to be fixed in Ubuntu 12.04? The fix
has been committed to Unity 2D 5.14 if I understand correctly, but
Ubuntu 12.04 uses Unity 2D 5.12, and no new version of Unity 2D has been
released since 5.12 in April.

Sorry if it's a newb question but it's very unclear to me whether 5.14
will be available for Ubuntu 12.04, what with Unity 2D being
discontinued in Ubuntu 12.10 and whatnot. Thanks for any clarification.

[Bug 1081123] [NEW] New Tab only displays the thumbnail of the first visited website of the current session despite all thumbnails being correctly generated

2012-11-20 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
Public bug reported:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0
Firefox package version: 16.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1

Hi,

I'm using Firefox 16.0.2 on an up-to-date Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, and my
settings are to clear history/cache when Firefox closes. In these
conditions, about:newtab is supposed to display thumbnails of the most
visited websites of the current session (according to fixed bugs 744388
and 736724 in Mozilla Bugzilla).

The behavior I observe is that about:newtab only displays the thumbnail
of the first visited website of the current session, in top-left
position. The eight other thumbnails remain blank (no text, no image).
Yet thumbnails are correctly generated and saved in the thumbnails
directory in my profile directory.

In the attached picture, I've opened www.omgubuntu.co.uk,
www.nytimes.com, boards.4chan.org/b, www.perdu.com, about:newtab in five
different tabs, in that order, in a new session, with all
addons/plugins/language packs deactivated. I've waited for each webpage
to load completely before opening the next one. None of these websites
uses HTTPS or Cache-Control: no-store/no-cache.

Only the first visited website gets a thumbnail in about:newtab, despite
thumbnails for all websites appearing in the thumbnails directory. The
same behavior occurs when starting Firefox in Safe Mode.

Can anybody reproduce this behavior? What additional info could I
provide for it to be triaged and fixed? Should I report it upstream?

[Bug 992717] Re: Opening files from the Dash randomly doesn't work

2012-11-20 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
Hi Péter, there is no mention of a warning/error in the bug I linked to
(bug #1002710) or in its duplicates (bug #1003820 and bug #1013386).
Opening files from the Dash fails silently, so your bug might be the
same.

If you sometimes get a warning/error when you try to open files from the
Dash, that might indicate another bug, or that the file you're trying to
open has been moved/renamed/deleted.

You can try to reproduce your bug in Unity 2D by creating
test/somefile1.txt and tést/somefile2.txt and try to open them from
the Dash. You won't be able to use Unity 2D anymore if you've upgraded
to Ubuntu 12.10 though.

[Bug 992717] Re: Opening files from the Dash randomly doesn't work

2012-11-20 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
Does ~ stands for peter or péter? If it stands for peter, then the bug
you are reporting is indeed the same as bug #1002710, bug #1003820, bug
#1013386: the Dash in Unity 2D fails silently to open files with an
accentuated character in its name or path.

As for the warning/error you sometimes get, that would be a completely
different bug, imho.

[Bug 1002710] Re: Dash will not open files under Greek folders

2012-11-20 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
I can also confirm that this bug affects files who have Greek or Russian
characters (accentuated or not) in their name or path. And I'm modifying
the bug name to better describe this.

** Tags removed: lens
** Tags added: accents dash russian

** Summary changed:

- Dash will not open files under Greek folders
+ Dash will not open files with accentuated, Greek or Russian characters in
their name or path

[Bug 992717] Re: Opening files from the Dash randomly doesn't work

2012-11-22 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1002710 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1002710

Sorry, I misread your comment #6. Indeed, it seems that the original bug
you reported (silent fail) is the duplicate of bug #1002710, bug
#1003820, bug #1013386, so I'm marking it as duplicate. The behavior you
report now (error message) is different from the original behavior
(silent fail), so that would indicate a different bug, that you could
report if you want.

I don't know if the original bug is gone in your case, or if it's just
masked by the new bug.

[Bug 1132736] Re: Xorg fails to start after installing the hardware enablement stack on precise due to missing symlink after purging old xserver-xorg

2014-11-20 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
This bug affected me too (on Precise LTS) after purging xserver-xorg
residual config once I installed xserver-xorg-lts-trusty.

I can confirm that reinstalling/reconfiguring xserver-xorg-lts-trusty
fixed the problem (I used apt-get --reinstall install xserver-xorg-lts-
trusty).

It took me a few hours to understand what was going on though. I agree
with jerico that the bug is high impact and hard to debug for an average
user.

It looks like it can affect anybody upgrading to Trusty LTS or Trusty
HWE Stack.

2014-12-27 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
I've changed the status of this old bug to Fix Released because I can't
reproduce it in the current version of Firefox (34.0). It was probably
unknowingly fixed at some point during the two years since it was
reported on Firefox 16.0 and 17.0. A lot of code changes in two years.

[Bug 1442111] [NEW] Scanner is correctly identified but scan fails with sane_start: Invalid argument as root, and rebooting the computer sometimes makes things work, sometimes not

2015-04-09 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
Public bug reported:

OS/Kernel: Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.2.0-80-generic x86_64)
Scanner: Epson Stylus Office BX305FW, USB 2.0, id 0x04b8/0x0863
SANE: libsane_1.0.22-7ubuntu1, libsane-common_1.0.22-7ubuntu1,
sane-utils_1.0.22-7ubuntu1 (up-to-date 12.04 LTS)
Epson IScan: iscan_2.30.1-1, iscan-data_1.36.0-1 (latest versions, 2015-03-23)

The scanner is correctly identified, when logged in as root:

  # sane-find-scanner
  found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x0863) at libusb:001:004
  # lsusb
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 04b8:0863 Seiko Epson Corp.
  # scanimage -L
device `epkowa:usb:001:004' is a Epson Stylus Office BX305F/BX305FW/TX320F/ME
OFFICE 620F/WorkForce 320 Series flatbed scanner

But scan fails with scanimage: sane_start: Invalid argument (scanimage
frontend) or Échec de la numérisation: Impossible de démarrer la
numérisation (simple-scan frontend):

  # scanimage -d epkowa:usb:001:004 -v -T
  scanimage: sane_start: Invalid argument

The permissions of the device seem nominal:

  # ls -l /dev/bus/usb/001/004
  crw-rw-r--+ 1 root lp 189, 1 avril 9 12:32 /dev/bus/usb/001/004

And the following line is present in /lib/udev/rules.d/40-iscan.rules:

  ATTRS{idVendor}==04b8, ATTRS{idProduct}==0863,
ENV{libsane_matched}=yes

When this problems appears, it stays so for the whole session, but
rebooting the computer sometimes makes the problem go away, sometimes
not. The only thing I can see that a reboot changes is the USB device
ID, all the rest stays the same in the previous commands output.

For instance right now the USB device ID was 001:004 and scan wasn't
working, I rebooted and it's 001:002 and scan is working. I don't know
if it is relevant, I don't understand what is causing the problem, and I
don't know how to investigate further.

SANE support for this scanner with external backend epkowa is normally
complete, and everything runs smoothly on the reboots when the problem
does not appear. Any help is appreciated. Should I report the bug
upstream, or against a different package, perhaps a USB-related or boot-
related one?

[Bug 1442111] Re: Scanner is correctly identified but scan fails with sane_start: Invalid argument as root, and rebooting the computer sometimes makes things work, sometimes not

2015-05-16 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
I forgot to mention, but when this problems appears, unplugging and
replugging the scanner (or switching it off and on) does not make the
problem go away, as far as I have noticed. Only rebooting sometimes make
things work.

Updated SANE from 1.0.22 (-7ubuntu1) to 1.0.25 (-git20150516-precise0)
using Rolf Bensch's PPA (daily git snapshots,
https://launchpad.net/~rolfbensch/+archive/ubuntu/sane-git). Now
scanimage also reports an epson2 scanner besides the epkowa scanner. I
believe this is because support for Epson Stylus Office BX305FW has been
added in backend epson2 in SANE 1.0.25, according to the lists of
supported devices available on the SANE website. Epson IScan has not
changed, same version as reported.

The reported behavior is still present (and still only on some boots, as
reported).

[Bug 1132736] Re: Xorg fails to start after installing the hardware enablement stack on precise due to missing symlink after purging old xserver-xorg

2015-08-09 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
Timo: I don't know exactly for the 14.04.3 LTS -utopic to -vivid HWE
upgrade, but I can confirm this bug is still present for the 14.04.3 LTS
-trusty to -vivid HWE upgrade.

I've just done a fresh install of 14.04.x LTS, using a PXE server so I'm
not exactly sure what the x was in the image I used. On completion of
the install and updates I was left with a 14.04.3 LTS and the original
kernel and X server, i.e. linux-generic and xserver-xorg. I updated them
to linux-generic-lts-vivid and xserver-xorg-lts-vivid. After purging the
old xserver-xorg related packages, the /etc/X11/X link was gone.

I still believe this bug should not be left unfixed, but perhaps that's
just me.

[Bug 1132736] Re: Xorg fails to start after installing the Hardware Enablement Stack due to missing symlink after purging old xserver-xorg

2015-09-11 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
I've just updated another computer's HWE stack from Trusty (xserver-
xorg) to Vivid (xserver-xorg-lts-vivid) and can confirm again that this
bug has been fixed, starting from when you update to Vivid HWE stack.

The /etc/X11/X symlink is still deleted when one purges the remnants of
the previous stack, but X nevertheless starts normally at boot time.

I've changed the bug status to Fix Released for xorg-lts-vivid.

[Bug 1480245] Re: package xserver-xorg-core-lts-vivid (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglamoregl.so', which is also in package xserver-xorg-vide

2015-09-11 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
I ran into this bug when upgrading the HWE stack from Trusty (for the X
server) and Utopic (for the kernel) to Vivid (for both).

What happened is that APT removed the packages xserver-xorg, xserver-
xorg-core, xserver-xorg-input-*, xserver-xorg-video-* before moving on
to install their Vivid counterparts, only somehow the following three
packages were not removed, and therefore were left with broken
dependencies, even though they were listed in the "will be REMOVED"
section: xserver-xorg-video-all, xserver-xorg-video-ati, xserver-xorg-
video-glamoregl. The persistence of xserver-xorg-video-glamoregl
explains the error message.

On my system the following three packages were also left with broken
dependencies: xorg, libegl1-mesa-drivers, nvidia-340. I was also left
without a working X server of course.

I tried Andy's workaround but APT refused to run the first command (sudo
apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-glamoregl) because of the broken
dependencies, and trying to remove all the broken packages (sudo apt-get
remove xserver-xorg-video-glamoregl xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-
video-all xorg nvidia-340 etc) only led to more broken packages
appearing and APT refusing to run the command.

So I let APT fix everything: it reinstalled all that it had uninstalled
in the first place (the Trusty X server):

$ sudo apt-get -f install

Then I could apply Andy's workaround: removing the offending package:

S sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-glamoregl
   # this also removed xserver-xorg-video-ati and xserver-xorg-video-all

and then re-running the HWE stack upgrade:

$ sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-vivid
xserver-xorg-lts-vivid libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-vivid
   # the other packages are installed as dependencies

Thanks Andy!

[Bug 1544221] Re: FreshPlayerPlugin display vCenter fonts incorrectly

2016-02-10 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
It says on the link you posted that this bug was fixed in version 0.3.4,
whose Debian package was uploaded to Debian Sid a few days ago. Since
we're before DebianImportFreeze this package was imported automatically
into Ubuntu's development release. So your issue is fixed in Xenial:

  http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/browser-plugin-freshplayer-
pepperflash

I'm not sure it will be fixed in Wily since it is a stable release and
software in stable releases tends to be less updated by definition.
After all, FreshPlayerPlugin is still at 0.3.2 in Wily, not 0.3.3:

  http://packages.ubuntu.com/wily/browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash

Besides it's a multiverse package, and there is a large number of
universe/multiverse packages relatively to the resources of the team
that maintains them (the MOTU team). The majority of these packages
don't receive personal attention from an Ubuntu developer, and stay at
their original version, or so I have found out in my personal
experience.

If I understand correctly, for this package to be updated in Wily, it
would have to go through the StableReleaseUpdate procedure, whose
description is unfortunately beyond my understanding. I think Vincent
can make sense of it though since he's the Debian maintainer:

[Bug 1544221] Re: FreshPlayerPlugin display vCenter fonts incorrectly

2016-02-10 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
In the meantime, you could simply fetch 0.3.4 from another source than
Wily's repositories. When I need a newer version of a package that is
not in the Ubuntu release I use, I do one of the following:

1. Add a PPA that provides it, and install the package via apt. I
currently use Alin Andrei's (WebUpd8), which provides the releases of
FreshPlayerPlugin, and I've just found out about Giovanni Santini's,
which provides daily builds:

https://launchpad.net/~nilarimogard/+archive/ubuntu/webupd8?field.series_filter=wily

https://launchpad.net/~itachi-san/+archive/ubuntu/freshplayerplugin?field.series_filter=wily

2. Download the .deb file from a newer release of Ubuntu, unless it
causes dependency hell. I dpkg-scanpackages a small set of .deb files
I've downloaded that way or from various printer/scanner vendors, so
that it forms a small local repository that I can add to my sources.list
and use with apt. But I've heard you can also double-click on the .deb
file.

  http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/browser-plugin-freshplayer-
pepperflash

3. Download the .deb file from Debian Sid, if it is only there, which
happens after DebianImportFreeze and before the start of a new Ubuntu
development branch. As with the previous one, this method requires
dependencies to be met without too much hassle.

  https://packages.debian.org/sid/browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash

4. Compile the latest upstream release. This is not necessarily
difficult but requires slightly more brain usage than installing
precompiled packages.

And while you're at it make sure your PPAPI Flash plugin is up-to-date
too by running sudo update-pepperflashplugin-nonfree {--status |

adobe-flashplugin via apt if you got it from adobe-flashplugin. Might as
well update both the plugin and the wrapper.

[Bug 1544409] [NEW] Flash plugin is installed as a dependency of browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash (freshplayerplugin) even if it is already installed by another package

2016-02-10 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
Public bug reported:

The browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash package (Wily, Xenial)
recommends pepperflashplugin-nonfree, which downloads the PPAPI Flash
plugin from Google.

This is not the only way to install this plugin in Ubuntu: the adobe-
flashplugin package, in Canonical's partner repository, installs it too
(PPAPI and NPAPI).

Shouldn't Ubuntu's version of browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash
recommend pepperflashplugin-nonfree | adobe-flashplugin instead, then?
Or only suggest pepperflashplugin-nonfree, as Alin Andrei's
freshplayerplugin package does (WebUpd8 PPA)?

Recommending pepperflashplugin-nonfree only means that a user with
adobe-flashplugin will get an additional PPAPI Flash plugin when
pepperflashplugin-nonfree installs as a recommended dependency of
browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash. I don't know if it is that much
of a problem, but I tend to be wary of this plugin, let alone two of
them.

I believe this is a packaging issue limited to Ubuntu since Canonical's
partner repository is not intended for Debian. AFAIK Debian has a unique
provider of PPAPI Flash in their repositories: pepperflashplugin-
nonfree.

However one could perhaps argue that the Debian package should also
suggest pepperflashplugin-nonfree instead of recommending it, since it
may be possible to install PPAPI Flash by other means on Debian too (I
guess)?

[Bug 1429030] Re: netboot mini.iso doesn't support UEFI boot

2016-02-12 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
I once had to install 14.04 LTS by booting from the mini ISO image on
the internal hard disk instead of booting from a thumb drive made from
that image (2008 Apple Macbook Pro can't boot from USB, can you believe
that).

I wished the EFI folder of that ISO hadn't been empty.

2016-02-11 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
Makes sense. Now we need an Ubuntu MOTU maintainer to take a look at
this. I can't offer to put the alternative in place myself, it is beyond
my skills (one day hopefully).

> One should also probably check that there are proper Conflicts/Replaces

> Ubuntu that provides both packages)

I checked and there aren't, at least in 14.04 LTS (that I'm using).
There is however a proper Conflicts between flashplugin-installer and
adobe-flashplugin, that both provide NPAPI Flash, so I think it makes
sense that there is one too between pepperflashplugin-nonfree and adobe-
flashplugin, that both provide PPAPI Flash.

I've subscribed the maintainers of the partner repository since they are
in charge of adobe-flashplugin. I hope it's the way to go.

[Bug 883742] Re: Deja Dup keeps asking for password

Not a duplicate of #840393/#681002 because the GPG error is different
(not "Bad CA certificate").

However it looks like it's the same as the one reported by Mathias Binke
in #989750.

[Bug 989750] Re: repeatedly asks for encryption password when backing up, even though "remember password" is ticked

2016-02-24 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
There are several other reports of Déjà Dup repeatedly prompting for the
encryption passphrase when encountering a GPG error (although not
necessarily the same as that in Mathias's log) during an incremental
backup, and only successfully completing full backups. See e.g.

# "encrypted message has been manipulated"
https://bugs.launchpad.net/deja-dup/+bug/1540286

# "can't handle text lines longer than 19995 characters"
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/deja-dup/+bug/1019293

# "block_filter 0x12345678: read error"
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/deja-dup/+bug/883742

People still affected, check logs with 'DEJA_DUP_DEBUG=1 deja-dup
--backup' to find out if your problem is triggered by the same GPG
error?

[Bug 1254291] Re: Cant re-add rubbish bin to exclusions after removing

2016-02-24 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
The trash can (US)/rubbish bin (UK) is at ~/.local/share/Trash and
doesn't exist if you've never put anything into.

Adding it back through Déjà Dup's GUI requires right-clicking in the
dialog box to select Show Hidden Files and get into .local, otherwise
from the command line you can run

  $ gsettings get org.gnome.DejaDup exclude-list

to print your current excludes and then

  $ gsettings set org.gnome.DejaDup exclude-list "[, '\$TRASH']"

So not a bug, although not obvious when you don't know where the trash
is.

[Bug 1526201] Re: Folders starting with a dot cannot be added to exclude/include lists

2016-02-24 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
Ctrl-H, or right-clicking "Show Hidden Files", works in all Nautilus
file selection dialog boxes, it's not something that's specific to Déjà
Dup.

I agree that I, too, discovered that feature per chance.

If you think it should be easier to show hidden files and directories in
file selection dialog boxes in general, you should report this against
Nautilus.

If you think it should be easier to show hidden files and directories in
Déjà Dup only, for exclusion purposes, you could perhaps mark your bug
as a duplicate of bug 1018154, which requests a way to exclude more
cache directories, or bug 458044, which requests a way to exclude all
hidden files and directories, cache or not.

[Bug 1544409] Re: Flash plugin is installed as a dependency of browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash (freshplayerplugin) even if it is already installed by another package

2016-02-11 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
> I don't know if [having two PPAPI Flash plugins] is that much of a
problem

Come to think of it, it is: the one browser-plugin-freshplayer-
pepperflash recommends, pepperflashplugin-nonfree, must be updated
manually or cronly by sudo update-pepperflashplugin-nonfree --install,
while the one in Canonical's partner repository, adobe-flashplugin,
updates with the rest of the system when the user sudo apt-get dist-
upgrade.

The problem is that when the PPAPI/NPAPI wrapper, FreshPlayerPlugin,
looks for a PPAPI Flash plugin in various directories where it may be,
the one installed by pepperflashplugin-nonfree has a higher priority
over the one installed by adobe-flashplugin:

https://github.com/i-rinat/freshplayerplugin/blob/master/src/config_pepperflash.c

So the wrapper will wrap the pepperflashplugin-nonfree plugin.
Therefore, a user who installs adobe-flashplugin as the plugin and
browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash as the wrapper will actually use
pepperflashplugin-nonfree as the plugin, and if they don't notice that,
there is little reason that they'll think about updating that plugin
independently of the rest of their system. This will eventually lead to
them using an outdated Flash plugin, with the associated security risks.

I therefore sincerely believe that browser-plugin-freshplayer-
pepperflash (in Ubuntu not in Debian) should recommend
pepperflashplugin-nonfree | adobe-flashplugin instead of just the
former, and that pepperflashplugin-nonfree and adobe-flashplugin should
conflict with each other so that they don't install alongside.

I've added this bug to the packages pepperflashplugin-nonfree and adobe-
flashplugin to reflect that last point (the missing Conflicts), since
I'm not sure it warrants its own bug report.

I suspect libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-vivid is enough (not 100% sure yet though, only
about 65%)

Also, in the comment line, xserver-xorg-core-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-
video-all-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-vivid are not necessary
since they are dependencies of xserver-xorg-lts-vivid, I don't know why
the community wiki keeps mentioning them

Louwtjie, Peter, did you happen to have Skype installed (from the

upgrading from Vivid's to Wily's X server, I've noticed skype-bin:i386
recurse-depends on a few libgl*-mesa-*-lst-vivid:i386 libraries. In my
case, removing Skype and autoremoving everything it recurse-depends on
made it possible to run the official command line unaltered.

This is no longer the case since 2016-02-27 in the upstream code, and
the subsequent release 0.3.5 on 2016-04-12:

https://github.com/i-rinat/freshplayerplugin/commit/00e41544ad29c87e3bf03d9953798f46cda9a16f

Wily and Xenial still ship older versions though, packaged in browser-

still present and this bug report is still valid.

pepperflash (source: freshplayerplugin) from ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8,
starting today and version 0.3.5-1~webupd8~trusty|...|v|w|xenial~3. His
version Recommends pepperflashplugin-nonfree | adobe-flashplugin instead
of just pepperflashplugin-nonfree. Thanks Andrei!

So this report only concerns the version shipped with Ubuntu Wily and
Xenial (and now Yakkety).

2017-02-04 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
Wahrscheinlich war ttf-mscorefonts-installer nicht erfolgreich
installiert.
installer wiederzuinstallieren:

  sudo apt-get purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer

  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

  sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

apt\*" finden.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1607535 ***

This is bug 1607535, fixed in package apt-transport-https 1.2.19
(released to Xenial and Yakkety on Jan 26) by Julian Klode in bug
1651923. Update apt-transport-https (and possibly the other apt
packages, for good measure) to 1.2.19 (Xenial) or 1.3.4 (Yakkety), and
reinstall ttf-mscorefonts-installer (or purge and install). Please

2017-02-04 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
It looks like a previous install of ttf-mscorefonts-installer failed.
But reinstalling it may fail because of bug 1607535, since your version
of apt is apparently < 1.2.19. Try removing it completely, updating apt
packages to 1.2.19, and reinstalling it:

  sudo apt-get purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer

  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

  sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

If you don't want to upgrade your whole system, use "install apt-
transport-https" instead of "dist-upgrade" to upgrade only specific
packages. The fix is in apt-transport-https, but you may want to upgrade
all upgradeable APT packages for consistency: you can find them with
"apt list --upgradable apt\*".

Not exactly the same error message as in widely-impacting bug 1607535,
but almost, and judging by the attachments to your bug report, your
version of package apt-transport-https is < 1.2.19. Please update this
package (and other apt packages, for good measure) to 1.2.19, and retry

[Bug 1607535] Re: ttf-mscorefonts-installer 3.4+nmu1ubuntu2 fails to install core fonts

2017-02-04 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
Robin:

Sorry I couldn't reply sooner.

For 16.04, this bug has been fixed in apt-transport-https 1.2.19,
released Jan 26, 2017, so you shouldn't run into it again with the
Ubuntu ttf-mscorefonts-installer 3.4 package, provided you update apt-
transport-https to 1.2.19.

For 14.04, I cannot reproduce what you describe. On my own 14.04
machine, I am able to install Ubuntu's ttf-mscorefonts-installer 3.4
without any error. Your issue may have a different cause. If you can
still reproduce it, please open a new bug report with as much
information as you can give, and subscribe me to it.

[Bug 1607535] Re: ttf-mscorefonts-installer 3.4+nmu1ubuntu2 fails to install core fonts

2017-02-04 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
This bug has been fixed in apt-transport-https 1.2.19 (xenial) and 1.3.4
(yakkety), released 2017-01-26, by Julian Klode in bug 1651923.

If you are still affected by it, update apt-transport-https to the
appropriate version and reinstall Ubuntu's version of ttf-mscorefonts-
installer. You should remove Debian's version of ttf-mscorefonts-
installer beforehand, if you installed it (unless you want to keep using
Debian's version of course).

If you run into Content-Range errors when reinstalling ttf-mscorefonts-
installer, remove the downloaded fonts in /var/lib/update-notifier
/package-data-downloads/partial/ and try again. This is a different bug,
also fixed recently, but not backported to Xenial and Yakkety yet (bug
1657567).

Content-Range issue. Also make sure that apt-transport-https is 1.2.19

Debian version works fine too).

[Bug 1607535] Re: ttf-mscorefonts-installer 3.4+nmu1ubuntu2 fails to install core fonts

2017-02-04 Thread Nathanaël Naeri
** Description changed:

  [Symptoms]

When installing or updating the package ttf-mscorefonts-installer in
Ubuntu 16.04 or 16.10, an error message appears in a GUI window,
indicating "failure to download extra data files" (the fonts themselves)
"after package installation" (the package itself appears to have been
installed). This error message re-appears regularly, as a cron-job re-
  tries the failed download.

If installing or updating from the command line, additional failure
information is given in an error message prefixed by "E:", but this
error message depends on the mirror server which is contacted for the
download: "404 Not Found" is common, but there is also "Protocol http
not supported or disabled in libcurl", and complains about invalid
  Content-Range headers.

  [Cause]

The current 3.4 version of ttf-mscorefonts-installer in Ubuntu 16.04
delegates the download of the proprietary Microsoft Core Fonts for the
Web (Andale, Arial...) to the package update-notifier, which itself
delegates it to the program apt-helper provided by the package apt. The
download URL points to the host downloads.sourceforge.net, which
redirects to a randomly-chosen mirror server
  .dl.sourceforge.net.

Unfortunately, the program apt-helper has a bug in the way it treats
redirections. This bug makes apt-helper keep a space in the URL instead
of encoding it to %20 before contacting the mirror. It is more
extensively documented in bug 1655431 and bug 1651923. The mirror
replies to this malformed request with an error message (e.g. "404 Not
  Found"), and download fails.

Some mirrors appear to understand the malformed request nonetheless, and
send the requested font file, however since there are 11 fonts to
download, the chances of getting 11 understanding mirrors are low. Hence
why the error message usually concerns andale32.exe or arial32.exe
  instead of webdin32.exe.

  [Workaround 1]

Download the fonts manually and put them all in the same directory. You
can use wget for that, because contrary to apt-helper, it handles
redirections fine (command line formatted for readability, do not
include line breaks and line indents):

- $ wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/corefonts/
- {andale32.exe,arial32.exe,arialb32.exe,comic32.exe,courie32.exe,
- georgi32.exe,impact32.exe,times32.exe,trebuc32.exe,verdan32.exe,
-   webdin32.exe}
+   $ wget http://downloads.sourceforge.net/corefonts/
+   {andale32.exe,arial32.exe,arialb32.exe,comic32.exe,courie32.exe,
+   georgi32.exe,impact32.exe,times32.exe,trebuc32.exe,verdan32.exe,
+   webdin32.exe}

Or you can use your browser: point it to
  https://sourceforge.net/projects/corefonts/files/the%20fonts/final and
  download the same files.

Make sure the package is purged and no remaining setup triggers are
remaining, using your favorite package manager or command-line APT:

- $ sudo apt-get purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer
+   $ sudo apt-get purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer

Then reinstall the package, this time pointing to the previously-
downloaded fonts in a second step:

- $ sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
- # (this will most likely fail again)
- $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure ttf-mscorefonts-installer
+   $ sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
+ # (this will most likely fail again)
+   $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure ttf-mscorefonts-installer

The second command should return a "graphical" interface in the
terminal. Use it to point to the directory where you downloaded the
fonts (/path/to/directory/containing/the/fonts). Make sure no .deb files
are in this directory, they seem to be picked up too and then it fails.

If a pop-up shows up for a post-install action later, just let it run,
it shouldn't come back. It may triggered by the file /var/lib/update-
notifier/user.d/data-downloads-failed and you may be successful in
avoiding the regularly-reappearing message by removing this file. But
  this point is less clear.

Once everything is working, you can delete the downloaded fonts in .exe
format, they have been uncompressed and installed in
  /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts in .ttf format.

Adapted from: Vincent Gerris (comment 17), Lesley Binks (comment 18).

  [Workaround 2]

Remove Ubuntu's version of ttf-mscorefonts-installer and install
Debian's version instead. Indeed, Debian's version uses wget to download
the fonts, and contrary to apt-helper, wget handles redirections fine.

  Download the package from https://packages.debian.org/ttf-mscorefonts-
installer. Version 3.6 has been tested by several users. This workaround
should work with Debian's version 3.4+nmu1 too, but then you'd be
prompted to update to Ubuntu's problematic version 3.4+nmu1ubuntu2 next
  time you update your packages.

To download the package with wget (command line formatted for
  readability, do

  [Workaround 2]

Remove Ubuntu's version of ttf-mscorefonts-installer and install
Debian's version instead. Indeed, Debian's version uses wget to download
the fonts, and contrary to apt-helper, wget handles redirections fine.

  Download the package from https://packages.debian.org/ttf-mscorefonts-
installer. Version 3.6 has been tested by several users. This workaround
should work with Debian's version 3.4+nmu1 too, but then you'd be
prompted to update to Ubuntu's problematic version 3.4+nmu1ubuntu2 next
  time you update your packages.

To download the package with wget (command line formatted for
readability, do not include line break and line indent):

    $ wget http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/pool/contrib/m/
    msttcorefonts/ttf-mscorefonts-installer_3.6_all.deb

Purge your currently-installed Ubuntu version of the package using your
favorite package manager or command-line APT, and install the Debian
  version with dpkg:

    $ sudo apt-get purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer
    $ sudo dpkg --install
