No, not a problem now. I just reported it in the hope to help someone...
Maybe this could be converted to a question/answer
Thanks

[Bug 59144] Evolution still warn for a moved (repeating) appointment

2006-09-06 Thread Romano Giannetti
Public bug reported:

I have a repeating (weekly) appointment ever Wed, 10:30.
Two days ago I moved the appointment of today (Sep, Wed 6) to 16:00; evolution
correctly asked me if I did want to change all of just this occurence, I said
just this, and closed.
Today evolution warned me, even if in the calendar page there is no such
appointment.
I have a shot that explain this perfectly (you know, one image is better than a
thousand words...).

[Bug 59144] Re: Evolution still warn for a moved (repeating) appointment

2006-09-21 Thread Romano Giannetti
I have another screenshot for you.
What happens is:
- the hour on the (moved) appointment show up correctly.

BUT:
- I have the reminder for the (now not existing) appointment.

Not only:
- I did some quite test before, by defining 1-day or 1-week or weekly forever
appointment, and deleted them _after_ moving one occurence (delete all
occurences on the moved one), but the reminder of the ghost appointment still
is here.

Notice that the edit box has been opened by clicking on the daily
schedule entry; pressing Edit on the appointment reminder does nothing
(quite logically, the appointment did not exist anymore).

I suspect evolution-alarm-notify (and/or evolution/evolution-alarm-
notify communication) for this one.

Romano

PS can I abuse a bit? Can you point to me to some guide/tutorial on how
to keep in sync calendar/contacts between the evolution on my three pcs
(portable, work, home)? The fact is, evolution is a nice name, but
disrupt any chance of successful search on google...

[Bug 45033] Re: Resizing calendar items twice crashes Evolution

2006-07-04 Thread Romano Giannetti
Oops. Sorry for the above silly comment. It happened to me too; but I
discovered that in a freshly created user, virgin calendar it does not occur.
To reproduce, I need to import a .ics file (will attach, nothing private here)
from an old version of evolution. To reproduce:
Import the attached calendar.ics file
Go to 5th july.
Move the reuniĆ³n... entry to 12:30 (with the mouse)
Try to extend the other entry ..junta
Sometime it works. Repeat: often crashes, sometime lock solid.

[Bug 52510] Multi-function pcmcia card: only function 0 detected.

2006-07-10 Thread Romano Giannetti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pcmciautils

I know this bug-report has quite few data. I will add lspci -vv and more
information as requested later.

Basically, I have a 3com/Megahertz pcmcia card which has an ethernet and
a modem into it. A freshly installed ubuntu did not recognize it at all.
Then digging a bit I did:

cp /etc/pcmcia/cis/3CXEM556.dat /lib/firmware/3CXEM556.cis

and now (after pccardctl eject / insert) the function 0, ethernet, is
recognized and working. Unfortunately the modem function (which is the
one I really need) is not working. I tried loading serial_cs, but tat
did not do the trick.

The card worked perfectly in mandriva 2005, which I wiped out
to install Dapper... ;-)

[Bug 56429] Re: dd segfaults with LANG different from C

2006-08-15 Thread Romano Giannetti
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 42264 ***

Ok, sorry for the noise. I have searched the bug before, but dd gave
too much results, and dd LANG no one.

OTOH, it would be nice to add a package filtering to

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bugs?advanced=1

I know it is possible to arrive to a filtering like that, but it is not
evident from the report a bug main page. So I searched it, and not
found, and filed a new bug.

Will try more in the future, but I really think that advanced search
on the launchpad should have the possibility to get a bit more
advanced...

way to disable the darn wheel before I open the laptop and get rid of

alt-f1 a couple of times) and then back to X (alt-f7 or alt-f8 or
alt-f9) and keyboard will be ok again.

Another point: please notice that this is, for me, a Intrepid

the volume, but no keyboard lock. Now I need the VC switch trick. Not
funny.

[Bug 209794] Re: Clear Private Data does not clear private data from the Awesome Bar's Rich Results list

2008-10-14 Thread Romano Giannetti
This is a me too with a comment: this is not limited to the Rich Results
list.
Before doing a clear private data:

(0)pern:~/.mozilla/firefox/az16pkko.default% du Cache OfflineCache
48024 Cache
8 OfflineCache

after doing it:

(0)pern:~/.mozilla/firefox/az16pkko.default% du Cache OfflineCache
48024 Cache
8 OfflineCache

I noticed that because I uploaded a file to my web server and Firefox
continues to give me the old version no matter what I do (MS Explorer
works ok).

I tried to set clear on exit and restarting it, whatever, to no avail. So I
think this bug is
worse than what suggested here.

[Bug 209794] Re: Clear Private Data does not clear private data from the Awesome Bar's Rich Results list

2008-10-15 Thread Romano Giannetti
mackenzie: I am not sure I understand. The problem is that, although the
web server has a new file (with the same name), firefox continues to
give me the old version until I manage to clear cache data (at least,
during the first 10 minutes since the change, I didn't wait more). MS
explorer works ok.

zaza: yes, it's the same problem I have.

mackenzie: I tried with and without the Ask me... selected. Th only
way I have to show the clear private data windows is via the right-click
menu proportioned by the cited add-on.

Notice that happens on just one installation. On my laptop, which in
principle has the same installation and configuration, clear private
data works as supposed.

magic combination: mic boost at about 1/3, capture level at about 2/3,
digital capture (a new control with 1.0.16) at about 1/3. Other
combinations make the mic too low, too noisy or to distorted.

But its very hard to install new kernel on Ubuntu. I suggest you who
use Ubuntu to wait for Hardy Heron. It will have newer kernel version.

Well, it's not so difficult, if you can manage with a standard kernel (I
mean, no ubuntu additions). I have a little howto here:

https://www.dea.icai.upcomillas.es/romano/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Kernel

On the other hand, it's true that Hardy will come with the new kernel,
although on my laptop 2.6.24 is ok for sound, but not for mic input. You
have to install alsa-1.0.16 for this, on top of kernel 2.6.24. So if you
decide to go for a custom kernel, 2.6.25 (still on -rc phase) is the
best one.

for 127.0.1.1 (notice: .1.1, not .0.1) in my /etc/hosts. I commented it
and now the gnome starts fast like in Feisty.

But: why that entry is needed? localhost is on 127.0.0.1, no? Since
1986, no :-)?

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2008-01-14 Thread Romano Giannetti
Yes: what normally there was (at least, when /etc/hosts was written by
hand):

127.0.0.1 localhost my_fancy_hostname_not_qualified_here

...and if you have a fixed IP:

127.0.0.1 localhost
10.1.2.3 hostname.domain

...and on our Debian server it's still like that. This 127.0.1.1
thing is quite new for me. I do not know why it should make a
difference, but still, it's strange. I suppose an interaction with the
name service.

In effect (without any change, with the 127.0.1.1 entry in /etc/hosts):

(0)pern:~/www/DEAROOT% host 127.0.0.1
1.0.0.127.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer localhost.
(0)pern:~/www/DEAROOT% host 127.0.1.1
Host 1.1.0.127.in-addr.arpa not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

So there is a difference. Really puzzled.

[Bug 225611] [NEW] tracker inconsistecies with .tex files

2008-05-02 Thread Romano Giannetti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker

It seems that tracker, even after a re-index, fails to index (or find) contents
in .tex files.
For example, after 2 days running on my home dir (10 G), this are the results:

(0)rukbat:~/research/ferrite% tracker-search Jiles
/home/romano/research/ferrite/biblio/Jill-Atherton-spice-model.pdf
/home/romano/research/ferrite/biblio/Brachtendorf.pdf
/home/romano/research/ferrite/biblio/verilog-a-mag.pdf
/home/romano/research/ferrite/biblio/simul-hyster-04014515.pdf
/home/romano/research/ferrite/tim1/Attic/bozza0.TEX
/home/romano/research/ferrite/tim1/Attic/bozza1.tex
/home/romano/research/ferrite/tim1/Attic/bozza1.tex.backup

But:

(0)rukbat:~/research/ferrite% grep -l Jiles */*.tex */*/*.tex | uniq | wc -l
24

So it finds just 3 files over 24 in just this subdir (probably there are
much more).

Re: [Bug 225611] Re: tracker inconsistecies with .tex files

2008-05-02 Thread Romano Giannetti
I installed untex, I'll report back.

On the other hand, I checked the tracked filters, and I have:

(0)rukbat:~/research/ferrite/imtc07-journal% cat
/usr/lib/tracker/filters/text/x-tex_filter
#!/bin/sh
UNTEX=`which untex`
if [ -n $UNTEX ]; then nice -n19 $UNTEX $1  $2;
else cat $1  $2;
fi

So it should not have had any effect.

Checking something more, the .tex files that are found are in the
category Documents, not Text. Dunno if this can help pinpointing the
problem...

(notice: I _do_ have some tex indexing. The problem is that it is
missing a lot of files.)

Maybe. I will be without internet for the next two days, then I will

Yes, that was my guess, too. The filter script installed should have
indexed the files nevertheless, so there's a bug here, untex installed
or not.

I didn't re-index after installing untex to see if the current state of
my system could be useful. But well, I will try to re-index now, and
comment after that.

I think that the marking of the bug as invalid has been a bit hasty.

On Sun, 2008-05-04 at 22:52 +, Jamie McCracken wrote:

I understand. I am sorry if I sounded harsh, but probably I am a bit
dense... I supposed that tracker was using the filter that I have in
/usr/lib/tracker/filters/text/x-tex_filter which I posted above, which
says that if there's no untex, the whole latex file was indexed [1]. But
if tracker directly call untex you're right.

Im not sure I want to change that yet as indexing unfiltered files might
lead to garbage going into the index (that applies to all files that
need filtering and not just tex ones)

That lead to the question I started the the thread with: why I had just
3 latex files indexed when grep found 24 occurrences? I see how that
could have been 0 (no untex --- no index), but why the partial result?

Its likely therefore to remain as is (consider it a wont fix rather than
 invalid if you wish)

Fair enough, it's your call. I have installed untex and my laptop is
re-indexing; will open another bug if the problem is still here, ok?

Romano

[1] BTW, maybe indexing the whole tex file is the right thing to do. In
the end, a .tex file should be treated like a source code for any
language, so sometime I'd like to make a search for that \darn macro...

[Bug 225611] Re: tracker inconsistecies with .tex files

Ok,

installed untex and checked, rebuilt the database (re-index), still no joy.
Look:

(0)rukbat:~/research/ferrite% wajig list untex
ii untex 9210-10
 Remove LaTeX commands from input

(0)rukbat:~/research/ferrite% tracker-search Jiles

/home/romano/research/ferrite/tim1/Attic/bozza0.TEX
/home/romano/research/ferrite/tim1/Attic/bozza1.tex
/home/romano/research/ferrite/tim1/Attic/bozza1.tex.backup

7 files found, of which 3 .tex files. But:

(0)rukbat:~/research/ferrite% grep Jiles */*.tex */*/*.tex | wc -l
29

29 *just* .tex file in that subdirectory.

So, untex is immaterial to this problem. The result are the same with
and without it, like it should be, given the filter file...

Tracker is great for searching things into documents like ods or pdf; I suppose
I should stay with grep for LaTeX... or should I open another report?
Thanks

This is a very nasty bug. I will attach two files to this report, but:

write a table like that:

Ok, I answer to myself:

Looking at http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=44295

it seems not a bug. Disabling regexp in expressions it works as expected
by me (although going thru Tools-Options-Calc-Calculate does not
suffice; you have to close/reload the sheet to have it working).

Nevertheless, it's an unexpected results. I know what a regexp is, but
most of people (at least people I know) have no hints. The default is at
least a bit dangerous...

Please close the bug if you think that this is the RightWay(tm),
nevertheless. That's just an opinion...

another problem with a 60 seconds delay in resume, see
http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/5/23/38 and related threads. But that's another
problem.

So, I think that _this_ bug can be closed as far as you can check that .cis
file is distributed correctly with Feisty.

Thanks!

[Bug 116326] Re: No audio INTEL HD audio - Realtek ALC268 codec - Toshiba A205-S4577

2007-10-01 Thread Romano Giannetti
Venky,

I tried it, and yes, with alsa 1.0.15rc3 it sort of works, but with the
problems I signalled before: mic level is low, and it's plagued by a very high
offset. Have you tried to see if it's the case for you? Is very easily seen
with audacity. See my reports on the alsa bug entry:

Thanks!

[Bug 116326] Re: No audio INTEL HD audio - Realtek ALC268 codec - Toshiba A205-S4577

2007-10-02 Thread Romano Giannetti
Ben,

I am willing to help to test this. I have a similar laptop to the one of venky
(toshiba U305),
vendor-id 0x1179, 0xff50, and I am running Feisty with a vanilla (Linus')
2.6.23-rc9 kernel, plus I have tried various alsa drivers.
I want to be sure to do the right thing, so...

 * I recompile the drivers (./configure --with-cards=hda-intel)

 * I have alsa lib 1.0.14 installed; someone on the lkml list told me
that's ok to test reinstalling just the kernel modules, is it true?

 * My sound sort-of-work with 1.0.15-rcX, last hg snapshot (20071002),
and the last realtek driver (4.06c), autodetected as model=toshiba. The
problem is with the very lousy quality of recording, given in my opinion
for the persistent problem of the huge dc offset in input (there are
snaphsot and plenty of details on the alsa-bug 3104), which is not
resolved.

 * I tried to test model=3stack and model=acer with the procedure:
- Install the new driver (as above)
- /etc/init.d alsasound stop (a couple of times, first one fails)
- modify /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base adding model=... to the options
snd-hda-intel line
- restart alsa by modprobe snd-hda-intel (and resetting and setting all the
mixer values).

Till now, no drivers has the sufficient quality in microphone input to make a
Skype call possible.
If I can help test patches, please tell me. Should I try 5stack? Is the
aforemention procedure correct for testing?

Romano

What happens if you use 2.6.22? It suspends but do not resume (or

It suspends (at least, it seems to suspend ok: the laptop goes off and
the led blinks as expected). On resume, the hdd light stays put and
nothing happens. Alt-SysRq magic keys don't work, and I have to do a
very hard reset (power button during ten seconds) to reboot. Sometime I
have to repeat the hard reset. Very messy status.

Are you running compiz-fusion? Is your laptop a A205-S4577? What video
driver are you using (intel or i810)? Where did you read about this
2.6.23 fixing a sata issue that messed resume?
Is there a bug open for that?

My laptop is a U305-S5077. I have a page for it here:
https://www.dea.icai.upcomillas.es/romano/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ToshibaU305
I use beryl (apt-get install beryl emerald, from feisty, works ok).
Driver is i810, I need the 915resolution hack to make it run.

For the suspend problem, I thought it was this, but the proposed patch
didn't work for me:

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7780

Please tell me if I can help more.

AFAIK it has only the basic support that was in alsa 1.0.14 which, at
least for me, does not work. If you see at the famous patch_realtek.c
file:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=blob;f=sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c;h=9a47eec5a27bb27a7f24c00d7ab9189cb34ac98c;hb=bbf25010f1a6b761914430f5fca081ec8c7accd1
there is only ALC268_3STACK and _AUTO models, nothing about _TOSHIBA od
_ACER submodels.

I have sound working with 2.6.23 kernel plus the patch here:
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/patches/2.6/2.6.23-rc8/2.6.23-rc8-mm2/broken-out/git-alsa.patch
that I think will be pushed to 2.6.24 at an early stage of development.

2007-09-10 Thread Romano Giannetti
Hi,

I didn't try gutsy kernel (2.6.22) because I need a 2.6.23 for other things
(namely, suspend to ram) to work. And you know, s2ram *must* work, otherwise
you loose 90% of the functionality of a laptop. But I suppose it should work.
If I have a bit of time (I have two very bad weeks ahead) will try.
Mahdi, have you tried the problem with offset in recording I commented in
http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/9/10/17 ? Just try to start recording with audacity
and see if changed mic level you have a continuos value varying with it... and
saturating the input at high levels.

2.6.23-rc5 do suspend to ram perfectly with s2ram -f -p -m, no patches needed.
Someone told me that the failure with previous kernels is SATA-related, but I
lost the reference.

Recording is quite important if you use your laptop to work together

Modem seems to work, but it simply responds to AT commands, on
connection it fails with NO CARRIER.

Do not try releases... I think it's better to try the current driver ---
the tight interdependencies between driver, lib and utils should be a
thing of the past, Linus himself ruled that out sometime ago. And the
current 2.6.23-rc6 claims al268 support, but without toshiba quirks, so
that it will not work for us.

By the way, I'm running i386 SMP.

Mahdi:

Unfortunately what I understand from this interchange of messages on
lkml: http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/9/5/166 is that the changes (acer and
toshiba quirks went in after 1.0.14 both) are considered too risky for
mainline 2.6.23. So I suppose that our sound will not be supported in
mainline till 2.6.24. I tried to mildly object this, but you know,
