[Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour... well maybe.

We have not held an Ubuntu Hour since the COVID virus in March. Now that
things are starting to open up once again and with Broadway Coffee now open
until 7:00 pm.
I thought I'd mention to our LoCo Linux techies that I'll be down at
Broadway Coffee this Friday late afternoon time until closing at 7:00 pm
that evening.
So if anyone would like to join me for an *unofficial* Linux/Ubuntu meeting
while enjoying some much missed tech-talk along with a cup of tea or
coffee, you know where I'll unofficially be this coming Friday evening.
Just passing this along.

If nothing else, I'll step outside at 6:27 to see if I can spot Starlink-1
(first volley of satellites launched by SpaceX). At 6:27 PM, look from
SOUTHWEST to NORTHEAST, elevation (Deg above horizon): start: 10°, max elv:
61°, end: 12° Note: Arrival time may be off by a few minutes.

Hi all, just a friendly reminder.
There is NO Salem Ubuntu Hour this evening. Do to lower participation
during the holidays along with the holiday hustle, we have decided that it
would be best not to have our regular Friday meeting this month.
Considering the storm that's coming our way, I think we decided wisely.

Thank you all for your contributions over the years, towards building an
awesome Ubuntu community along with creating "Ubuntu," the best Linux
distribution ever made.

I'll be there with some of the computer equipment I got at the Garten GEARS
store, which I'll be installing Linux / Ubuntu on during our meeting. If
anyone is interested the Garten GEARS store is having a holiday sale today
where everything will be 40% the sticker price. So if you looking for a
good computer to install Ubuntu on now is the time. The Sale is from
11:00am to 3:00pm, however the good deals will be gone before 3:00pm,
therefore you may arrive as early as 10am, door opens at 11:00. Located at: 334
Industrial Way NE, Salem. Please let them know your part of our Linux

[Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu hour today.

Just letting fellow Linux enthusiasts know, Salem Ubuntu Hour is taking
place today (Friday), July 20th.  The festivities start at 6:00PM and last
until 7:00ish, and will take place at Broadway Coffeehouse, located at 1300
Broadway St NE, in Salem. This event is for anyone interested in GNU/Linux
distributions, including our favorite Ubuntu distro.

Come on down to Broadway to beat the heat, and enjoy a nice ice cold
beverage while watching the heat from inside their A/C cooled building, and
talk about Linux and Ubuntu.

Hi all just a reminder the Salem Ubuntu hour will be taking place at

meeting Ubiquity Robotics showed up with their Magni open source robot that

[Ubuntu Oregon] Salem Ubuntu meeting.

Just letting you know I won't be able to make Ubuntu Hour this evening
taking place in Salem. As once again I'm sabotaged by the holiday
festivities. I was really hoping to make our last meeting of the year,
however my family has made other plans.  Have a great meeting, see you all
next year.

With any luck this next year we "may" actually have a release party for
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver.  It would be fantastic to have a release
party themed around the "Beaver."  As most know - Oregon is also home to
the Beavers, which comprise several athletic teams representing Oregon
State University.  However that's not the only thing Ubuntu Bionic Beaver
has in common with Oregon State Beavers. Both logos are also colored
Orange. ;-)  And as you all know, the cool commonalities between Linux and
Oregon don't stop there.

Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas, and a happy happy happy New Year.

Thank you everyone for another fantastic year of running Linux and Ubuntu,
and thank you all for being part of out tech community.

caught Dave's NW-tech radio show during noontime on KMUZ.org, he gave this
event high praises, saying Ubuntu is a great replacement for Windows, an OS
made by the community that lets a user take command of their own system,

While I was downtown Salem, I handed one of our flyers to a guy named
Steve, who runs Linux Mint DE.

Our regularly scheduled Salem Ubuntu Hour will be taking place today
Friday, August 18th.
Regardless of the Solar Eclipse casting a shadow over Salem in 3 days,
don't let the shadow keep you from attending this evening's

interested in Ham radio, Hardware, Hacking, and Coding.

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Firday's Salem Ubuntu Hour, and Planetarium events.

Hi All,
Broadway Coffeehouse was able to reserve the Dallas Room, 204, for our
meeting on Friday, June 2, from 6pm-7pm.  The Dallas room (204) is located
on the second floor, towards the back.  Some of you may remember meeting
there before. The room holds about 10, so we should have plenty of seats
available for those wishing to attend.  There is no fee to use this room,
your patronage helps the Coffeehouse makes it possible for us to continue
to use this public space for free.  So please thank Broadway Coffeehouse by
purchasing a beverage, and letting them know your there for the Linux /
Ubuntu meeting.

After our meeting at Broadway, I'm heading over to Chemeketa's Planetarium
to see their eclipse presentation.  Anyones is welcome to follow me over to

On a personal note:
Over the weekend I attended the Dorkbot meetup, hosted at CTRL-H PDX
Hackerspace, located in Portland, and had lots of great tech fun.  Hope
everyone also had a great weekend.

Also currently writing in Python to read USB codes from a joystick, to
reverse engineer it for other useful purposes with Linux / Ubuntu.  The
stick is a Logitech RF2.4 Freedom 2.4 cordless joystick, so if anyone out
there already knows the scan-codes, please let me know.  Also found
"jstest-gtk" runs great on Ubuntu 16.04.

[Ubuntu Oregon] Firday's Salem Ubuntu Hour, and Planetarium events.

Hi all,
I just put in for a conference room request at Broadway Coffeehouse in
Salem, for our next Salem Ubuntu Hour event, and will let you know if we
get approved.  The conference rooms are complimentary with the purchase of
beverages, and or goodies.

Our next Salem Ubuntu Hour takes place this coming Friday, June 2nd, from
6:00PM to 7:00PM, at Broadway Coffeehouse.
Broadway Coffeehouse is located at 1300 Broadway St NE, in Salem.  Anyone
interested in GNU/Linux distributions, including our favorite Ubuntu
distro, may attend.  Meeting is open to the public.  For the price of a cup
of good tasting coffee, you can discover why Ubuntu is a "far cry" from the
usual status quo.

Also taking place after our Ubuntu meeting Friday evening - For those
interested in astronomy, particularly the coming Solar Eclipse in August
2017.  Chemeketa Community College Planetarium is hosting an astronomy
presentation on the solar eclipse, Friday, June 2nd, from 7:30PM to 8:30PM.

The Planetarium at Chemeketa Community College is located at 4000 Lancaster
Dr NE, Salem, OR 97305, inside Building 2, Room 171. Please park in the
"Blue" parking area which is nearest to building 2.  Event is open the
public, arrive early for best seating.

Admission: Adults: $5, Children and Chemeketa students: $4 (Cash or check
only.)

[Ubuntu Oregon] Salem Ubuntu Hour

Just letting fellow Linux enthusiasts know, Salem Ubuntu Hour is taking
place this coming Friday, Apr 7th.  So set your wind-powered sail for the
warm fireplace at Broadway Coffeehouse, located at 1300 Broadway St NE, in
Salem.  The festivities are from 6:00PM to 7:00PM.  For anyone interested
in GNU/Linux distributions, including our favorite Ubuntu distro, grab a
warm drink and come join us for some tech talk.

I've been experimenting with how easy it is to do C++ programming on
Ubuntu, with nothing to install, I was able to create a program within 15
minutes from inside Terminal.  Thanks GNU/Linux community.

Thank you Che for those kind words. It was also a pleasure conversing with
you and Linda as well, and I too look forward to next month.  I forgot to
ask - Even-though you are both exceptionally well versed in matters of
science, should Linda require a science advisor for her books as another
view point, I'd be happy to provide research.  Plus I'm waiting for
Hollywood to call me should they require someone who looks like an
alchemist... LOL.

Thanks for contributing to Boinc all those years, and your Ubuntu Touch
demo.

Looking forward to meeting up with you and the rest of our LoCo members

Hi Che,
Not sure the dual monitor stands are still there, they were 3 remaining
when I was last there two Fridays ago.
Last price I seen was $15/ea.
Looking forward to seeing ya, let me know what time you'll be at Garten,
and if time permits, we can meet up there like last time.  I was planing on
being at Garten around 2:00 to pick up some PSU and HDMI cables, before
they closed at 3:00pm

[Ubuntu Oregon] Salem Ubuntu Meeting.

Hi everyone,
Just letting you know the Salem Ubuntu Hour is taking place this coming
Friday, Feb 17th.
Salem Ubuntu Hour will take place downstairs in front of the fireplace at
Broadway Coffeehouse, located at 1300 Broadway St NE, in Salem.  The
festivities are from 6:00PM to 7:00PM.  For anyone interested in GNU/Linux
distributions, including our favorite Ubuntu distro, grab a warm drink and
come join us for some tech talk.

Typing of tech talk - Salem had it's first Makerspace kick-off event, which
had over 30 attendees with a wide diversification of skill sets and
interests, including those from the Linux community.  Flyers for Salem
Ubuntu Hour were distributed to those interested.

Sorry I may have to miss this Friday's Ubuntu meeting, as I'll be driving
back to Salem from OHSU about that time.  However, while at OHSU I'm
looking forward to partaking of their most excellent cuisine, and dealing
with their adroit academic professionals.

Should I get back early I'll most defiantly attend, however can't make any
promises at this time.

Please disregard my previous message, looks like the swapmeet is two weeks
away, so I have more time to cogitate, and procrastinate. ;-)

Just want to let those thinkers, and tinkers know; tomorrow from noon to
3pm at the Ike box in Salem, is a meeting on having a Makerspase in Salem.

have some or our Ubuntu / Linux flyers printer up, and out on the table.

I'll be there this evening for Ubuntu Hour, weather permitting... Looking

some of these terminal's to do VT100/VT102 terminal emulation by editing
their config file.  Not much time this weekend to play with these, although
I did install Terminator.  I currently need to devote all my time towards
finishing a newsletter before this Sundays deadline.  Thanks... for
attending, and contributing to community.

event page.  It was great to have met Che, Linda, and Tom.

We covered a wide range of topics; Linode.com - A Virtual Private Server
(VPN) service, Powerline - A status line plugin for Vim, Termite - An easy
to use and configure RS232 terminal program, Recalbox.com - A retro-gaming
operating systems with Kodi already included, and Recalbox runs on
Raspberry Pi.  Plus various ways to install Ubuntu in order to lock-it-down
making it more secure.

During the meeting, I promised I'd include some links to retro arcade
buttons, for that true authentic arcade feel.

The i-PAC2 is a USB "keyboard encoder" with 32 inputs and support for
trackball and spinner. Is fully programmable key code set.  The i-PAC2
looks to the host PC as a standard USB keyboard, which I really like
because there is no drivers to install.  The Mini-PAC is similar to i-PAC2
except Mini supports PS/2 via optional USB to PS/2 adapter.

Garten Store, where Linda bought a nice Lenovo, for I'm guessing Ubuntu...
;-)  WTG Che and Linda.

in Salem, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm, and meet up with Che and his wife Linda.
This month we will be in the Dallas Room, 204. Located upstairs towards the
back directly across from the elevators.  Please don't forget to mention

[Ubuntu Oregon] Salem Ubuntu Hour - Conference room.

Hi all,
I've recently been going down to Broadway Coffeehouse on occasion, for
those who may not know this is where we hold Ubuntu meetings in Salem
Oregon. While at Broadway Coffeehouse, I've noticed it's been getting a bit
packed lately, so I thought it best for this coming Friday's meeting to
request one of their free conference rooms located on the second floor.

We have not yet received approval for a conference room, however should we
get approved, I'll let everyone know what the room location and number is.
Until then, or in the event we don't get approval, we'll meet at the two
tables in front of fireplace.

This of course is dependent on weather conditions, which so far looks like
lots of rain... so situation normal for Salem. ;-)
Therefore meeting should take place as regularly scheduled for this Friday,
January 20th from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at Broadway Coffeehouse in Salem
Oregon.  Broadway Coffeehouse is located at 1300 Broadway St NE, Suite 100,
Salem, OR 97301.  With plenty of parking in back, off of 5th street.

connecting public transportation systems below that connect to Corvallis.
If ya both can make it to Salem air port, or the Amtrak / bus station hub,
I'd be glad to give you a ride to/from meeting. I have room for four
passengers, plus their tech bundle.

Do we want to hold the Ubuntu Hour meeting this coming Friday, Dec 16th?

The weather forecast does not look that good, with snow arriving tomorrow
(Wednesday) and and more arriving Thursday.

Tonight (Tuesday) - Snow, mainly after 11am with freezing fog, so I would
avoid going out in that fog, one may freeze..

Wednesday - 1 to 3 inches of snow possible, with more possible on Thursday.

Friday's high 33 deg, so cold even without the snow.

Good point James makes - It's a three-day weekend, so some people maybe
gone for the weekend.

My tentative plan, is being at Broadway Coffeehouse (our clubhouse) from
5:00pm to about 6:30pm, this way we can at least attempt to keep with
consistent branding / scheduling, just in case someone shows up for the
Ubuntu meeting.  Glad to hear Cody can make it to the clubhouse at 5 also.

I would like to catch the last part of the Motorsports Championships,
featuring Monster Trucks and Tuff Trucks, as I've never seen them before.
So I plan to leave Ubuntu hour early at 6:30pm, and head to the fair.

This is of course, contingent on me bing able to leave the office before 5
o'clock, so again this is my tentative "dream" plan... LOL.

Ubuntu Hour, normally held at Broadway Coffeehouse at 6pm.
Also taking place this Friday Sept 2nd is Oregon State Fair's "Mighty
Friday"  - That means fair admission is just $1 all day long, plus
admission includes concert, and all events.

That being said; what do we want to do?
Q1. Do we want to cancel this Friday's Salem Ubuntu Hour do to the fair,
move meeting time up one hour, or perhaps, all meet somewhere at the State
Fare?

As for myself, I'm in favor of meeting at Broadway one hour early (5:00pm),
then heading to the State Fair.  Below are some attractions you may be
interested in seeing while at the fair, which also take place Friday Sept
2nd.  If anyone is interested in ride sharing to the fair, please let me

introduced our newest member as Ryan, when in fact his name is Roman.

To clarify, there is a Ryan who is a member of our LoCo however he was

Thanks Che for sharing the flyers.

The topic of LFNW came up during last evenings meeting.  Bellingham, WA is
almost in Canada, so it's a bit far for us to drive.  I think your idea of
a Google "hangout" between both locations (Portland and Bellingham) is a
great idea.  And we would be willing to drive up to Portland, all though
don't know who would be willing to remain in Portland to host us.

Our thinking is to have a generic "Global Ubuntu Day" announcement approved
by Canonical, so each LoCo could add (fill in the blank) their own venue.
Name of LoCo event, time and place they regularly meet.  This way each LoCo
could provide their local newspaper with something that's both approved by
Canonical and professional looking.  This would act as a public service
announcement (PSA), which I believe are free, however there maybe size and
or formatting requirements.

It's time to get out to enjoy a warm cup of Java with your Ubuntu friends
during the Salem Ubuntu hour.  Taking place inside Broadway Coffee-house
during this Friday’s Salem Ubuntu hour.  The festivities start Friday,
February 19th, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm.

I'll be coming from a service call on the west-side of Salem so hopefully
I'll be done and across the bridge, sipping tea at Broadway, before the

Great to hear everyone taking the "good news" enthusiastically.  I can't
wait for Ubuntu to come to town, after all it's better then waiting for
Santa Claus. LOL...

As Cody stated, it was some time ago when we posted flyer to Launchpad, so
it's most likely gone by now.

That's really cool to hear of Che, and James, willing to share their
creative talents with the local community, by posting their flyers /
announcements to Launchpad.  Hopefully this will inspire others in the LoCo
to do the same. Super great guys.  WTG.

Line Interface (CLI), and a few options to get started with Ubuntu like;

older spare Intel computer.  Along with many other great topics of interest.

This coming Friday's Salem Ubuntu hour will not take place, due to this
year's New Years day following on the first Friday of January.
According to their Twitter Feed for Broadway Coffeehouse

this Friday, which would normally be our first meeting of the month.  Your
friendly Salem Ubuntu Hour will resume it's normal social "Bash", and
"programming" schedule on Friday, 15th of January, 2016.  Yes - GNU/Bash
pun was totally intended. LOL.

In the interim - If you find your brain engrams lacking the usual technical
stimuli, between now and our next meeting on Friday, January 15th, 2016.

Sorry to hear Ryein is not feeling well. As for myself, I have not
experimented with tty resolution. Get well soon Ryein.

I guess it maybe myself at the meeting, unless James shows.  I did get an
email from the Lady who's son is wanting to learn CLI, saying they would
attend.  However it's 6:11pm and so far it's Just me and myself, so I'll
continue researching BONIC.

a group that can teach her son, who is in middle-school, the Linux CLI.

Regarding your question – is joining a meeting remotely an option?

Currently Cody and I have been using a teleconference link created for
Microportal, the Electronics club, so their members can join in remotely.
Cody and I are also members of Microportal, so I simply asked him to use
the link we already have in common, which is use by Microportal.

I won't mind someone from the Ubuntu LoCo teleconferencing into a
Microportal meeting, because they are also interested in Electronics
(Arduino, Raspberry Pi, IoT).  Anyone wishing to join Microportal, may send
an email request to: ormicroportal.c...@gmail.com

However a problem arises, if a single teleconferencing link is used for
both organizations (Microportal and Ubuntu).  And would be problematic
should both organizations hold meetings at the same time.

I think a remote teleconferencing option is a great idea for Ubuntu LoCos,
and it was “once” looked into. Though I forgot what the outcome was.

Cody and I have been teleconferencing using Google Hangouts, here's what we
found.

Google Hangouts (formally Google talk) is available as a Browser plug-in
for Mozilla Firefox, and built into the Chrome browser. Also as an
application for Android, and iOS devices. However it works best on
“computers” through the browser, verses the app for mobile devices.

Testing revealed Google Hangouts works best on Ubuntu, Mac, and Windows,
computers using the Browser plug-in with Firefox, Safari, Opera, or IE
browsers. Up to ten (10) people can simultaneously teleconference via
Google Hangouts.

To teleconference using Google Hangouts, a Google account associated with
Google Hangouts is required by each participant. And of course, a video
camera if they want to be “seen” as well as heard.

LoCo Ubuntu hour in your area.

Speaking from past experience (VP of Salem Macintosh Users Group, and
co-founder of Microportal - the electronics club) we've had our biggest
turnouts during November meetings, I don't know why this is.  One would
think holidays and colder weather would be hampering turnouts, however over
the past 3 years November has consistently been our biggest turnout.  It's
almost brain stumping...LOL.
Being your a new club - it may take a few Novembers - though, so be
patient... If you build it, they will come. LOL.

Two other clubs in Salem, which I'm a member of, both use meetup.  The
problem with meetup is they are $expensive$.  Meetup is free as long as you
keep your meetup members under 50, the caveat is when you go over your
allotted 50 members, they want lots mo' money And from what I hear, the
price can climb almost as high as a web-host would cost.  Speaking of
web-host, I really like what you've done at the LoCo events page (below
link), plus Ubuntu is not going to spam us, or sale member's data. It's

for next months meeting on the 6th or 20th of November.

Plus I think, we should all post something in our respective local
newspapers, during every Ubuntu release (biannually), to help grow the LoCo
Ubuntu communities...  Sort of a Biannual Ubuntu Blitz Campaign... ;-)

I'll be there, although may be a little late.
Have an issue with the GUI Backup program included inside Ubuntu 15.04, not
connecting to NAS device via WRT-1900AC router.

Also this is my first post to our LoCo Ubuntu email list, sense I changed
my email to reflect a more pizzeria connotation. Which is why I may be
late... I'm actually waiting for the pizza to arrive. LOL.
