[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes
I've been using the Lucid RealTime kernel 2.6.31-11-rt for 9 days without a freeze, if anything my system is as stable as it's ever been. My 10.10 install still has the freezing issue. After doing quite a bit of research (yup I read the 122+ UF pages also lol), and weeks of Hardware testing on this freezing issue, there seem to be some similar and imho unrelated bugs. I think if we're ever going to isolate these problems, we need to try to catigorize and seperate the diffent versions of the freezing issue.(I'm going to post this in the dreaded 122+ page thread). My version ONLY freezes the mouse pointer and then stops responding to any subsequent USB mice randomly after I plug them in, also in a few cases, after having 3 mice stop responding in succession, the USB KB also stopped responding. In all cases the System is still stable and responds to remote axx. I NEVER experience high CPU usage, Video driver corruption problems or app or X crashes with this version of the freeze bug. For the time being, I'm going to leave Kernel 2.6.31-11-rt on my main install for works sake. But I will be testing possible fixes on my 10.10 install. There is a major BIOS update available for my MSI K9N2GM-FIH, including a unspecified USB function fix. I'll post back after flashing my BIOS. -- Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 669002] [NEW] Only root can start X at a reasonable resolution
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg After upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 on 2010-10-29, I've experienced the following show-stopper a problem: I'm using gdm. However, upon entering the correct password at gdm, the screen blinks and the gdm login screen is built up again. In order to start investigating the problem, I have booted into recovery mode from the grub menu, then chosen netroot in the Reciovery menu. If I type 'startx' as root, it works. If I 'su - nb' first, the type 'startx', the screen goes dark with an Input Not Supported box from the monitor. The Xorg log file from the case that doesn't work (attached) is very similar to the case that does work. The only possibly-significant difference is the final line [ 2295.773] (--) SAVAGE(0): Chose mode 14f at 85Hz. which doesn't have an equivalent in the Xorg log file for the case that works. I'm using the SAVAGE driver, but the problem is not specific to this driver: It occurs also when forcing use of the VESA driver. Through manual xorg.conf configuration it is possible to create a configuration which allows successfully starting Xorg by running 'startx' as a non-root user, although at an unacceptably low resolution. The problem is not specific to Ubuntu: It also occurs with Arch Linux 10.05 I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 (which does not exhibit the problem) now which I'm using for reporting this issue. So the automatically provided information from the 'ubuntu-bug' script should be referred to only for information on the hardware where the problem occurs. Dear itismike, thank you very much for your help, indeed the first helpful comment received on the web !!! :-) Just now I, am trying your suggestions while writing. as a matter of fact I placed two sheets of paper on the palm rest and I did not experied capricious behaviours of the pointer which did not opened unwanted windows or application. Will this behaviour be permanent? I will report after a few days of work. Than I red bug #27541 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/27541) discussion and I found it very useful since similar strange behaviours are reported. In particular I found interesting comment #20. I wanted to apply the solution given there, but I could not, because I do not know what to do in practice and which file has to be to modified. I will ask Stanley Sokolow to explain how to do, considering that I am not an expert. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 590393] Re: Full screen or other scaled video playback doesn't work properly on ATI Radeon X1200 (RS690)
Yes I have the same issue with my Packard Bell Dot M/A UK 045 which is an Athlon 64 Chip with embedded ATI X1250 RS690 Mobo Graphics chip. I am using the open source Radion Driver in X.Org X Server 1.9.0 I have also upgraded to Meerkat 10.10 x86_64 Beta with no improvement which is a disappointment, although glxgears -info works showing; 1526 frames in 5.0 seconds = 305.135 FP However video decoding instruction sets are going to be a different instruction set, so I do not know if its a case of the current open source driver not implementing these accelerated instruction sets in their abstraction layers in the hardware . or if its a case of the applications not implementing the accelerated function calls in their software. either way using iPlayer in a window works fine as soon as you go full screen mode the performance really slows down and makes it unwatchable. I do the same thing in windows Visa and it works fine on the same hardware ! I do not believe I had this issue before Ubuntu 10.x but then I probably used the closed source ATI Driver on older releases which unfortunately you can not do as they do not support anything above Xorg 7.4 This needs to be fixed to keep Ubuntu at the top of the pile for user experience. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 665991] Re: Unusable 3d acceleration on Maverick (ATI Radeon X1200)
I installed ubuntu-netbook too, and I couldn't try Unity. I got a blank screen (just the background), nothing worked: no panels, no unity- launcher (I had to restart gdm from tty1). However, one time (and just one time) I could click on the upper-left side of the screen (where is supposed to be the main-menu button) and the main menu (I think it's name is 'dash') appeared. I read in the release notes of Maverick that Unity may not work on some ATI cards (I tried to Install Unity on Lucid, with 3d acceleration working, and I got the same blank screen), so I think that this is an Unity issue. However, in the Ubuntu Desktop Edition 10.10 I still doesn't have usable 3d acceleration. Compiz is not working, glxgears shows nothing, and Stellarium (3d planetarium) starts but shows nothing. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 669125] [NEW] Part of screen is truncated on external HDMI monitor
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an external HDD without major problems. However, I have an external monitor connected via HDMI to my Acer Timeline 1810T notebook (Intel graphics). On this external monitor the screen resolution is correctly set to 1920x1080. However, parts of the screen are truncated. If I make a window go to full screen, not all parts are visible. Changing the resolution does not change this behavior. Also, setting the external screen as the only video source does not change the problem (currently it is set to extend the notebook monitor). I have googled a bit and found that at least two people experience the same problem: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ubuntu-63/ubuntu-10-10-and-hdmi- screen-resolution-838728/ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/550486 Since the latter bug report does not seem to fit my problem completely, I decided to file a new one. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch
bdkoepke, thank you for your help. With your pointers, I ended up compiling my own kernel with a new DSDT.hex (unfortunately current kernels do not support loading DSDT.aml files from initramfs). On idle, with WiFi off and low screen brightness I can also get roughly 10500 mW, with an estimated 7 hours of battery life. Of course, in an ideal world we'd find the appropriate progression of acpi calls so that a custom DSDT would not be necessary. Even better would be a true switchable graphics solution, although since Nvidia's binary driver won't support it, the bottleneck is still getting good 3D out of nouveau. -- support graphics card hot switch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/312756 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 27541] Re: Touchpad should block while typing
This bug affects me too. On my MacbookPro 6-2, I see that syndaemon is running, but it doesn't seem to be working as I would expect. Here's my ps output which shows how syndaemon was started: $ ps aux | grep syndaemon michael 1827 0.0 0.0 29180 1072 ?SOct30 0:20 syndaemon -i 0.5 -k This is the standard setting before I made any changes. I think .5 is enough of a delay, but I did a test and found that even when it was supposedly disabled, it still takes clicks from my touchpad: Opened a terminal and right-clicked the title bar and chose: 'Always on top' Entered the command: syndaemon -i 0.5 -k As I typed in another field, I saw: Disable Enable Disable Enable I also randomly tapped on the touchpad as I was typing. I was able to get the mouse click to register even when the sysdaemon said: disabled. It wasn't every time, but certainly enough to cause problems during normal use. I also tried changing the timeout from .5 sec to 10 sec, and repeated the above experiment. It showed the same results: even though it stated Disabled, the mousepad continued to register clicks and reposition my cursor (though not immediately.) -- Touchpad should block while typing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/27541 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[22.943] Fatal server error: [22.943] no screens found To patch it up I simply use Intel as a fall back driver on the first 'device' in the xorg.conf. Doing so I'm able to start X and GDM. I've tried installing both Ubuntu's and Nvidia's own drivers (256 and 260). I've reproduced this on two fresh installs of 10.10 on the same machine, and many times over on the latest install. ** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: I installed a fresh Ubuntu 10.10 and installed the proprietary driver (nvidia-current) suggested by the system. Upon reboot it fails while starting GDM, leaving me with a blinking cursor in tty7. I'm able to jump to tty1 and log in. The cause is that installing said driver (naturally) changes the driver in xorg.conf to nvidia, as should. But since this module fails, X fails and GDM fails. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 421261] Re: xterm background colour used to be black, now white
On my system, Debian squeeze, the resource files for xterm are: /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm-color xterm loads its resources from /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm, but if you add the line XTerm*customization: -color To your ~/.Xdefaults file, then xterm loads will load its resources from file /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm-color instead. /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm-color includes everything from /etc/X11/app- defaults/XTerm plus sets the colors to give you white text on black background (or whatever is defined in XTerm-color) You can even put: *customization: -color in your ~/.Xdefaults and then all apps, not just xterm, will use the ???-color resource files. -- xterm background colour used to be black, now white https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/421261 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xterm in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
