[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1925221] Re: Not possible to select language on Ubuntu Studio Live Session

2021-04-23 Thread Ross Gammon
I assume it is the ubiquity-frontend-kde package that needs to be de-
kubuntu-ified.

Bug description:
  Hi,

I just tried running the Hirsute Final image for Ubuntu Studio in a
Virtual Box machine and it is not possible to select a language as
stated in the Live Session Test Case.

Expected behaviour (as stated in the test case):
  1. Boot Screen
  2. Ubiquity - select language
  3. Click Try Ubuntu

  Actual behaviour:
  1. Grub menu - I chose Ubuntu Studio (not clear it was for the live session -
but the other options were definitely not).
  2. Boots successfully into the Live Session, but everything is in English.

This is probably not the best experience for a non-English speaker to
  "try Ubuntu Studio".

  Ross

2021-04-23 Thread Ross Gammon
Thanks for the explanation Erich. I struggle to keep up with the changes
sometimes :-)
Setting the Importance to Wishlist for the calamares, as it is not a bug but an
enhancement (to provide a DM) that we would be after.
I will add a task for ubuntustudio-meta to remember to make the switch one day.

Bug description:
  Envy24control.
  Version: 1.0.3+svn13-6 (bionic)
  Section: Multimedia(universe)
  Ubuntu version: 18.04 LTS

Issue present from at least 16.04,

Whilst envy24control creates and maintains ~/.envy24control/profiles.conf
mudita24 fails to do so. This is the case even when the profiles.conf file is
explicitly pointed to using the -f option.

In order to capture stdout/stderr messages, I start mudita24 from the
  command line, thus:

  $ mudita24 -c 1 -f /home/fawkes/.envy24control/profiles.conf

On the profiles tab, I can see the named "Card-1" profile previously
created using envy24control. Should I click to load the settings from
this, the following output is displayed in the terminal window:

  Cannot find program '0'.
You must specify path for '0'
Cannot restore settings for card '1' in profile '2'
  Use current settings.

Likewise should I adjust settings and click "Save active profile", the
following is displayed in the terminal:

  Cannot find program '0'.
You must specify path for '0'.
Cannot store profile '2' for card '1'

This behaviour is consistent, regardless of the value of the -f
parameter. Setting ALSACTL_PROG to explicitly point to the installed
  alsactl also has no impact.

As a result of this issue, mudita24 only serves as a control for the
currently loaded profile. It cannot be used to create or manage saved
  profiles.

I have upload rights for this one. The new upstream changes seem worth it for
the FTBFS fixes, and migration away from Python 2.
Just want to check with the release team first.

Please sync gimp 2.10.14-3 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

  It's a bug-fix release.

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
* Add a couple of upstream bug fixes: (LP: #1857254)
  - upstream_fix_segfault_glib_paramspec.diff
  - upstream_fix_segfault_glib_paramspec2.diff
* No-change rebuild against libilmbase24 and libopenexr24.

The fix is in the Debian package, so the Ubuntu delta can be dropped.

  gimp (2.10.14-3) unstable; urgency=medium

* d/p/Don-t-crash-when-a-plugin-defines-an-invalid-property-nam.patch:
Apply patch from upstream 2.10.16 release. If a plugin defines an
invalid property name, don't use that plugin instead of crashing.
  (Closes: #953880, #953854, #953794, LP: #1857254)
* d/p/Fix-invalid-property-name-in-pagecurl-plugin.patch:

in line with rules that were previously only in the documentation.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1866917] Re: Hexter sound generator dpesn't start from menu

2020-03-14 Thread Ross Gammon
OK - after battling with the build system to try and get Hexter
installed back on the original /usr/lib/dssi path, I realised I was down
a blind alley and it still git not work. So I had to did a bit deeper
and discovered two things.

1. ubuntustudio-menu is installing a hexter.desktop file, so my changes
to the desktop file in the hexter package will be overridden anyway.

2. It is not the path that is wrong. The Exec line in the desktop file from the
Debian hexter package does not work because the asterisk is not correctly
expanded to the correct path. It needs to be executed via a shell command:
Exec=sh -c 'jack-dssi-host /usr/lib/*/dssi/hexter.so'

I will fix the Hexter desktop file via Debian & a sync, and drop the
Hexter desktop file from ubuntustudio-menu.

2020-03-11 Thread Ross Gammon
Yes - installing back to /usr/lib/dssi is a quick fix. We can see about
adding extra search paths for jack-dssi in Debian later.

Are there other plugin managers that should be updated to the new path?

I am having fun with the build setup on my new computer - so going a bit
slow at the moment.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1866917] Re: Hexter sound generator dpesn't start from menu

2020-03-11 Thread Ross Gammon
Whoops - I think this might be my fault. I did indeed install hexter in
the "multi-arch" path as Debian normally requires. I thought I had fixed
it by altering the desktop file to point to the correct location.

In any case, the new location probably also means the extra path needs
to be added to other plugin managers like Carla.

It is probably best to move it back to the traditional DSSI location, as
it is unlikely that anyone would need both a 32 and 64 bit Hexter.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1799900] Re: delay plugin core dumps

2019-06-09 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Nikos,

Thanks for taking the time to report this. Are you sure that this is not
just a problem with ecasound?

I use Ubuntu Studio, and I just tried the CMT 1 second delay with Jack
Rack, and also Carla which is available in our Backports ppa. The plug
in worked fine without crashing. I didn't try ecasound, which I am not
familiar with.

For your information, I just synced the latest cmt from Debian (1.17) to

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1831666] Re: Add lsp-plugins to ubuntustudio-meta seed

2019-06-08 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Erich,

It looks like you have manually added the packages to the meta package. I
cannot see commits in the seed repo, and I can't see them in the germinate
output either:
https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntustudio-dev/ubuntu-seeds/+git/ubuntustudio/+ref/eoan
https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/germinate-output/ubuntustudio.eoan/all

First the packages need to be added to the seed:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/Seeds

Then, to update the meta package automatically, you run the ./update script.
This will use germinate to update debian/control for you (from the seeds), and
it will also take care of the changelog for you, although you will have to add
the bug numbers manually. You might have to revert your changes to the meta
package first. Here are the instructions (slightly out of date - as we always
use the git repo now):
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/UbuntuStudioPackageMaintenance#Meta_Package_Maintenance

You do actually have permission to upload yourself:
$ ubuntu-upload-permission --list-uploaders ubuntustudio-meta
All upload permissions for ubuntustudio-meta:

Component (universe)

* MOTU (motu) [team]

Packagesets
===

ubuntustudio:
* Ross Gammon (rosco2)

Per-Package-Uploaders
=

* Erich Eickmeyer (eeickmeyer)
* Kaj Ailomaa (zequence)
* Ross Gammon (rosco2)

You can upload ubuntustudio-meta to eoan.

But sing out if you need help.

   * As the status of the jack-midi and pulseaudio-jack bridges are not
updated correctly from the config file, users have to open
ubuntustudio-controls to set the required status every time they
  login/logout/reboot.

   * The bug is very annoying for users that need to adjust their jack
settings to cater for different audio software and hardware.

   * The statuses read from the config file are a string. When
converting from string to boolean to set the check button status in
the gui, python will always evaluate the boolean as "True" for any
string except "None". Now the strings are parsed with some if/elif
statments to set the correct boolean status for the check button.

  [Test Case]

   * Run ubuntustudio-controls

   * The first time ubuntustudio-controls is run, the 4 tick boxes in
the gui (e.g. "Auto Start Jack at Session Start") should be set to the
recommended defaults for Ubuntu Studio. Change the tick boxes to
  something else (e.g. all off).

   * Click Apply Audio Settings (saves the settings to a configuration
  file).

   * Close Ubuntu Studio Controls.

   * Restart Ubuntu Studio Controls. The previous settings should be
remembered. Previously to the fix, the recommended defaults were set
(ignoring the settings saved in the configuration file).

  [Regression Potential]

   * The changes are limited to the ubuntustudio-controls app, and this
package is only ever installed for Ubuntu Studio users, or users that
want to add the Ubuntu Studio settings to their favourite flavour. The
only reverse dependency is the Ubuntu Studio meta-package.

   * The changes have been tested in my ppa
  (https://launchpad.net/~rosco2/+archive/ubuntu/testing) for Disco with
  no apparent regressions.

  [Other Info]

   * The same changes (uploaded to Eoan) have been backported in our
  Ubuntu Studio Backports PPA (https://launchpad.net/~ubuntustudio-
ppa/+archive/ubuntu/backports) and is therefore already in the hands
  of many users.

  [Original Description]

Several users on the Ubuntu Studio list have reported that they only
want the ALSA Jack Midi bridge to be active sometimes.

When switched off in ubuntustudio-controls it always restarts with it
enabled again which is very inconvenient.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1822463] Re: autojack crashed with ValueError in start_slave(): not enough values to unpack (expected 3, got 1)

2019-05-01 Thread Ross Gammon
Well, so far the problem is pretty limited, and only those with the
older us-controls sticking with DEV=default would experience the bug.
And the simple work-around is to update to the fixed version in the ppa,
re-save the configuration, and autojack should be happy after that.

I just ran autojack with the latest us-controls in the autobuilder, and got
this new crash (I did not change my autojackrc which had been left with
"DEV=default"):

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1822463] Re: autojack crashed with ValueError in start_slave(): not enough values to unpack (expected 3, got 1)

2019-04-27 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Len,

It took a long time to work out the best test method.
But I can confirm that the version in the autobuilder fixes the autojack crash
once you go into us-controls and save the configuration.

If you upgrade from the old version to the new version with DEV=default still
in .config/autojackrc, then run autojack you still get the crash:
$ autojack -h

ValueError: not enough values to unpack (expected 3, got 1)

So us-controls now saves a better default value for new installations,
but someone that was already getting the crash will still get it until
they save a new configuration, and a person that manually edits the
config file will also still get a crash.

Trapping the crash in autojack and printing a suitable error message
would be the perfect fix.

  [Test Case]

   * Run ubuntustudio-controls

   * The first time ubuntustudio-controls is run, the 4 tick boxes in
the gui (e.g. "Auto Start Jack at Session Start") should be set to the
recommended defaults for Ubuntu Studio. Change the tick boxes to
  something else (e.g. all off).

   * Click Apply Audio Settings (saves the settings to a configuration
  file).

   * Close Ubuntu Studio Controls.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1826413] Re: ALSA Jack Midi bridge off selection not surviving a reboot

2019-04-26 Thread Ross Gammon
The importance of this bug should probably be "Medium", and I would like
to target it as an SRU for Disco, as the bug can make the package
annoying to use for people that need to disable the checkbox options
occasionally and have them remembered.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1826413] Re: ALSA Jack Midi bridge off selection not surviving a reboot

OK - I have worked it out. The a2j status read from the config file is a
string. When converting from string to boolean to set the check button
status, python will always evaluate the boolean as "True" for any text.
We need to parse the string with some if/elif statments to set the
correct boolean status for the check button.

I have some time today to fix and upload a new version. Or is Len
already on the case?

If we can get the first temporary fix to lmms, then we should be able
to add this back inti the Ubutu Studio seed.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1822134] Re: Ubuntu Studio Installation - Black Text on Dark Gray

2019-03-30 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Erich,

Fast work! Uploaded.

Made a couple of minor changes:
- I had to refresh the patch and remove the empty "series" patch from the
series file.
- Also added a bit more of a description to the patch header, and added a link
to the upstream Pull Request. Assuming it is merged there, it will be easier
for the Debian Maintainer to confirm this later (if he checks).

Marked as Fix Commited, because I think due to the freeze it will need
unblocking from the Release Team.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 752950] Re: Dependency listed wrongfully as Suggest

2019-03-16 Thread Ross Gammon
The original reason for dssi-host-jack not being a "depends" (dssi-host-jack
not built on kfreebsd arch) is no longer a reason.
I think "recommends" is the relevant fix, as hexter can also be run in other
hosts (e.g. Carla currently in the NEW queue).

Marking as Fix Released as I can see it is in the archive.

This is a new package. The plan is to upload it to Debian, but due to
the Buster freeze, this will not make it for Disco. Therefore, we would
like to upload it to Ubuntu first.

The packaging can be found here:
git clone https://git.launchpad.net/carla

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1809024] Re: [needs sponsoring] CPU Governor setting does not persist after reboot

2019-03-03 Thread Ross Gammon
@Erich

The debdiff was created directly from the repository. Many sponsors
prefer to see a debdiff so that they can more easily see what has
changed from the last upload.

Offering both possibilities is a good idea, but if something has changed
since the debdiff was created, we probably should provide a new debdiff.
But in this case I see you have only bumped the standards version since
the debdiff was created. This change is not so important, and probably
should be added to the changelog in anycase.

The sponsors team are subscribed to the bug and someone will hopefully
see it soon and sponsor it.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1817262] [NEW] Drop Patchage from Ubuntu Studio seeds once Carla is uploaded

2019-02-22 Thread Ross Gammon
Public bug reported:

As discussed on the mailing list:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-studio-devel/2019-February/009069.html

Patchage is not maintained upstream, and Carla can manage the plugin
patches instead.

THerefore we should drop patchage from the seeds and add carla instead
(once it is available).

directly from git in the upstream (Ubuntu Studio Devel) repository.

2019-02-18 Thread Ross Gammon
I have prepared a debdiff for lmms which adds logic to debian/rules
which builds with -Wno-maybe-uninitialized only for ppc64el.

This is not tested on ppc64el (as I don't have access to a suitable
machine), but it does still build on amd64.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1810534] [NEW] Restore lmms to Ubuntu Studio meta package

2019-01-04 Thread Ross Gammon
Public bug reported:

Due to many reported crashes when calf plugins are used with ardour, we
pushed an update to calf-plugins (to 0.90.1) which added a Conflicts:
with the calf-ladspa package (which is part of lmms). As lmms Depends:
on calf-ladspa, lmms had to be temporarily dropped from the Ubuntu
Studio seeds for Disco (to be 19.04).

One temporary fix might be to drop calf-ladspa to Recommends: instead of
Depends: which should allow calf-plugs and lmms to be installed together:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=891756

On another Debian bug, it is argued that calf-ladspa was originally only meant
to be used by lmms, and should not have been exposed to other apps as a
separate package. In the meantime, the plugins have been renamed to "veal" by
lmms, but this is not yet released:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=870473

If we can get the first temporary fix to lmms, then we should be able to
add this back inti the Ubutu Studio seed.

It must be to do with the default states of the button on opening the
  window (both greyed).

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 454918] Re: status area on main window does not scale to its content and fonts

2018-11-25 Thread Ross Gammon
According to comments on the Debian Bug, the upstream developer was not keen to
fix this. If this is still a problem, I recommend creating a new ticket
directly on the upstream bug tracker to see if the opinion has changed.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1800817] Re: Ubuntu Studio seeds switched to git

2018-11-03 Thread Ross Gammon
Whoops - that was a bit of a brain fart. No sure why I thought that diff
was normal. At least now the git repo has caught up to the archive there
should be harder to make mistakes going forward.

powerpc and font-meta files have been deleted from the repo and no
longer appear in the diff.

Switched J Jackson's copyright to his email instead of web URL.

Bug description:
I have an idea that many users may like to use in Blender. Programs
  like Viewmol (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/+package/viewmol) and
  Ballview (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/+package/ballview)
display molecules by using chemical file formats like XYZ
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xyz_file). Would it be easy to give
Blender the ability to read a chemical file
  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_file_format) generate a model
that can be used in Blender. This feature would help animators and
graphics designers to generate graphics faster because many molecular
model files can be downloaded freely. Then, this would save designers
time becasue the molecule would be drawn for the graphics designer.
Ballview, Viewmol, and numerous other molecular model viewers are open
source, so the Blender developers should have an easier time
implementing this idea rather than writting the code from scratch.

Thank you, and I hope my idea benefits Blender and its users. I am
willing to be a beta tester for this feature. I am currently learning
how to use Blender. I am very familiar with molecular model files (I
own hundreds or more). I know how to use OpenBabel, which is an open-
source program that converts one molecule model format to another.
OpenBabel would enable us to test many formats.

jack-mixer we are after. It is GTK. Jackmeter is a console/terminal only

It's life might be short lived though, as there is no upstream activity

python-gobject-2/python-gi or it will be dropped from Debian for Buster.

greybird-gtk-theme is pulled in by xfce4-settings which is in the

it is not really doing any harm, so it is low priority.

It is on my to do list, but I don't have a lot of spare time at the

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 754077] Re: Aeolus organ emulator does not work after install

Hi,
Thanks for taking the time to report this. There are much newer versions of
aeolus in Ubuntu now. Can you please confirm this is fixed in a more recent
version (eg. Ubuntu Xenial - 1604 or Artful - 1710)?

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 880535] Re: qjackctl blocks audio output on ALSA devices

2017-08-21 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi - this is quite an old bug now. Qjackctl has moved on to 0.4.2 in
Ubuntu's latest releases now.

I have no problems using Qjackctl in Ubuntu Studio (which uses a jack-
sink to connect with Pulse Audio for desktop sounds). Then there is no
need to use ALSA directly.

I am marking this as invalid now. Please report again if it is still a
problem.

2017-08-10 Thread Ross Gammon
Public bug reported:

Qjackctl has got a little behind, so I will work on merging the latest.
Looks like we will still need the same Ubuntu specific changes.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1698225] Re: zynjacku is seeded in ubuntustudio but removed from Debian

2017-08-04 Thread Ross Gammon
OK - we are not willing to maintain zynjacku without any upstream
support in Ubuntu Studio.

I have just removed it from our seeds, and I will reassign the bug to
the ~ubuntu-archive team for removal from the archive.

zynjacku is seeded in ubuntustudio but removed from Debian

Status in zynjacku package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The zynjacku package is in sync with Debian, but was removed from
Debian in 2013. Normally we would also remove it from Ubuntu, but
this package is seeded in ubuntustudio.

If the Ubuntu Studio team wishes to maintain zynjacku, please upload
it to Ubuntu with a changed maintainer field.

If you do ont wish to maintain it, please remove it from the
ubuntustudio seed and reassign this bug to the ~ubuntu-archive team
  for removal.

[Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 876636] Re: Output window not displaying properly in Unity

2017-06-17 Thread Ross Gammon
I am sorry that nothing happened with this bug for such a long time. As Ubuntu
11.10 is no longer supported, this bug should probably be closed.
In addition, as Ubuntu will be switching to GNOME from Unity, it is probably
not worth forwarding upstream at this stage.
But thanks for taking the time to report it, and if the problem still persists
for a newer Ubuntu Release, feel free to put the status back to Confirmed.

Output window not displaying properly in Unity

Status in idjc package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
The Output window defaults to full screen in Unity, but the top of the
window (containing the group controls) is inaccessible. If the Output
window is unmaximised, the bottom of the window is inaccessible
(without Alt+Click+Drag) as the window doesn't have scroll bars.

  Suggested solutions:
  1) Redesign output window to suit full-screen layout without needing scroll
bars
  2) Add scroll bars to output window when maximised or unmaximised.

Re: [Ubuntustudio-bugs] [Bug 1678417] Re: Please rebuild pd-aubio against libaubio5

Thanks Steve. I woke up this morning with the intention to upload a new
debdiff, with the bug closed in the changelog - but it was all done for me!

I admit I did not know about the "build1" in the version. I had a little
trouble finding docs about rebuilds, only rubbish came up in my
searches, and I didn't spot that (the version) in the example rebuilds
that I looked at. I probably won't forget it now :-)

Cheers,

Ross

Title:
  Please rebuild pd-aubio against libaubio5

Status in pd-aubio package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Ardour and aubio are currently stuck in zesty proposed. Rik Mills's
  analysis:

  "From update-output.txt

  trying: denemo aubio ardour
  skipped: denemo aubio ardour (0, 0, 13)
  got: 42+0: a-19:a-4:a-4:i-5:p-4:s-6
  * amd64: pd-aubio

Seems to migrate it needs to do that with newer aubio etc.

  e.g. looking at
  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/zesty/amd64/ardour/1:5.5.0~dfsg-1

new ardour built against and depends on the libaubio5 in proposed, so
needs that to migrate with it.

But the update-output.txt is saying that would break pd-aubio, which
makes sense if you dig into it as pb-aubio in release depends on
libaubio4 which would be replaced by libaubio5.

  http://packages.ubuntu.com/zesty/pd-aubio

So as a first guess, maybe pb-audio could have a rebuild against the new
aubio to depend on the newer lib in proposed instead, so all that
migrating does not break it? I don't know this stack and it's deps, so I
am somewhat guessing here if that would work or rebuild ok."

I can confirm that pd-aubio builds fine against libaubio5 in Debian
sid. We need to start the transition and then rebuild pd-aubio against
  the aubio currently in zesty-proposed.
